Welcome back friends to another episode of festivalPass Stories. This week, our host Pat Tully sits down with the dynamic duo of Mellik Gorton, and Meghan Mallan known as The Non Renewed! An Indie rock band out of Denver, the duo met through an app designed for musicians to meet. In 2019 they met up to jam with a group of people and soon realized that they were better together than in a larger band. They began playing covers of music they love and then as trust developed, they began to share music they wrote and started recording their own songs. The name “The Non-Renewed" is a tongue-in-cheek ode to Meghan's teaching contract being “non-renewed. Meghan was a music teacher in the Denver public school system. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it opened a door for Meghan to pursue her dream of a music career. Mellik wrote the tune That Much, tracked the vocals; then Meghan took it and ran with the production to create their first single and they were off and running. While the duo continued to explore their older writings and searching for the next single, they launched their social media campaign. Then Meghan reveals a story behind a relationship breakup that led to another great single from the band called Smoke You Out. Pat becomes surprised to learn that both Mellik and Meghan both recently attended their first music festivals. However, the band is eager to get out on the road and get on the festival circuit. Their first big live show is taking place at The Lost Lake Lounge in Denver. Watch and follow as this band continues to grow and come to a festival near you! LA TIMES Article on Bank of America wanting out of their contract after California EDD extended it this month In this podcast, I discuss my success with NM Unemployment, and then pivot to a less successful unemployment, California. Bank of America boldly states it wants to no longer be in the unemployment business, despite the state of California exercising their option to extend the deal for 2 years. With all the issues BofA has had that I have talked about on the podcast along in several interviews, it's shocking. What's even more shocking? The BofA Spokesman who said that BofA wanted nothing to do with California is an elected official in the state of California. Conflict of Interest, much? I talk about all the next steps California will have, the issues with fraud and BofA customer service and where everything is going to go going forward. Oh and they didn't make THAT Much money servicing California, and the service they provided was likely seen as a boutique project for them when there wasn't 23 million unemployment claims in a single state and they actually thought, "Shit, we may have to do some actual work here!" Build a website in just 5 days (even if you're not techie) at www.free5daywebsitechallenge.com Already have a website? Take the Free "Jumpstart Your Website Traffic" marketing mini-course at www.jumpstartyourwebsitetraffic.com Leave a Review! Today I'm revealing four things I wish I would have known before quitting my day job so that if you have plans to quit yours, you can be prepared for the things that might trip you up in the first several months. 4 things I’d wish I’d known before I quit my day job “I want to be my own boss. I want to work when I want, from wherever I want, and make six figures.” Sound familiar? If it’s not your dream, it might sound familiar because it was mine. And I’ve shared it with you a million times – while I was side hustling those first 3 years, while I was celebrating quitting my day job in January (#SideHustleGoneSerious), and as the reason behind why I created the Free 5 Day Website Challenge. It’s crazy how powerful our words and dreams are. We may not have control over the timeline, or exactly HOW it will happen, but we can create whatever outcome we want. I did it. I’m my own boss, I work when I want, from where I want, and I’m on track to make six figures this year. And don’t get me wrong – I’m very proud of myself and extremely grateful for being able to do this. But what I failed to define in that giant, bold, statement is how I wanted to FEEL along the way – which left me totally vulnerable to these things I wish I would have known before I quit my day job. #1 – I’d be a total freak about money. Leaving the security of a steady paycheck uncovered some deep issues I didn’t know I had about money, security, independence and my self-worth. The anxiety of whether I could meet my income goal every month. The shame when I’d tell my husband I’d be depositing my paycheck late. The shame and anxiety of having to cancel contracts and services that I was able to afford when I wasn’t paying myself a paycheck, and waiting too long to do it. The drive to prove to myself that I made the right decision to leave my job so I’d do whatever it took to replace that income every single month – even if it meant working 70 hour weeks for months on end. The non-stop content-creation, daily podcast production, program selling, launching, and webinars that overwhelmed not just me, but also YOU. “There’s no way I can be successful if I have to do THAT MUCH” – is something I heard from so many of you in the survey I sent out recently. I want you to know that I heard you. Here’s the good news – you don’t have to do that much to be successful. You only have to do that much if you’re trying to not leave space in your brain think about how scared you are. My advice to you? You’re probably going to be scared too when you quit. But knowing that, you can expect it. And when you expect it, you can ask yourself, “Am I doing this because I’m scared or because it’s what my customers really want/need? Am I buying this because I’m scared or because I know deep down it’s what I need?” You do not need to create as much content as I was creating to be successful. In fact, creating that much content was hindering my success and causing confusion with my audience. Focus and doing just a couple of things really well are what will help you reach your goals. And if you’re curious about how much money I made in August of this year, you can check out my latest income report here. https://peptalksforsidehustlers.com/august-income-report/ #2 – Healthy habits wouldn’t magically appear the day I didn’t have to drive to the office. I had this dream that when I worked from home as my own boss that I’d finally have the time to put into losing weight and getting healthy. I could work out in the mornings, even go back to Crossfit! I’d have time to plan, shop and prepare healthy meals, and suddenly none of my size 14 jeans would fit anymore and I’d have to go buy all new size 10s. Maybe even 8s (neither of which I’ve never worn before in my life). As it turns out, having time isn’t the problem! Shocking, right? I have the luxury of deciding what I do every day, and I still didn’t decide to put any effort toward that goal. In fact, I filled up all that time with work, and used work as an excuse to not have TIME to focus on my health. Time has never been the problem. The problem is my belief in my ability to accomplish that goal. I never doubted for a second that I’d be able to quit my day job and run my own business. I’ve doubted for my whole life in my ability to lose weight, and I’m probably scared of solving that problem for reasons I’ve yet to understand. I tell you this because if there’s something you really want, but you use not having time as the reason you don’t have it, ask yourself if you really believe that it’s possible. Maybe it’s time, maybe it’s not. And maybe you just need someone to believe in you more than you believe in you to help you accomplish that goal. #3 – My perfect day wouldn’t just happen to me. We’ve all done one of those perfect day exercises where we daydream in detail about what our perfect day looks like… however, I discovered that more than daydreaming is required to make it happen. Until I created a schedule that blocked time for those things I said would be important to me on a perfect day – and guarded that time – I let every single day get away from me. To the point where I’d work 7AM to 7PM without a break (or a shower). Why? See #1 – fear and anxiety. And what would happen is that I’d want to escape from all of it – and if you follow me on social media at all you can exactly when this happens – you can see it play out. I’d feel overwhelmed by all the messages in the Facebook group and social media notifications and emails piling up in my inbox, so I just put them off. I’ll stop livestreaming and posting. And if it gets really bad, I’ll even stop sending my newsletter – because it all feels so forced and inauthentic. Because I can’t tell you I’M TIRED AND OVERWHELMED. I don’t want you to think you can’t do it too!! But you CAN do it. Just like I can do it – with ease – when I take the time to plan my perfect day, and then I honor my plan and don’t give away my time. Because I do have the choice. I always have the choice. It’s taken several months for me to get consistent with my schedule, to block off time for self care, to not open my laptop too early in the day until all my stuff for ME is done. THIS is the #1 most important thing I can do to feel the way I want to feel every single day. #4 – I don’t have to do this all on my own. I’ve said it a million times that my business coach has been integral to my success – but even with her help, I’ve been doing this on my own. Every day, just me and my dog Scarlett in my office, hammering away at my keyboard. And I didn’t realize how lonely I had gotten and how much I missed being around other people until I went away for a weekend with 5 other online business owners for a weekend mastermind retreat. I had briefly met the girl that invited me, but the 4 others were total strangers – and we had THE BEST WEEKEND! We talked, we laughed, we cried, and we made big plans for our businesses. One of the conversations that really stuck with me is when one of the girls said, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but do you have friends in your town? Like, that you talk to and ask for help?” And I was like, “Yes, of course I have friends…” But then it dawned on me that I don’t reach out to them when I feel like escaping, or when I’m scared or when it’s getting hard. I don’t want to burden them, and I don’t want them to think I’m complaining because I have the dream life of not having to go to an office every day. Now I have friends that understand what I’m going through with owning my own business. And they hold me accountable to working less, building a team, taking better care of myself and finding more local business friends. And we ask for help, support and encourage each other – and most importantly, make each other laugh – every single day. You don’t have to do this on your own. Please create a support system, whether it’s a local entrepreneur or blogger group or an informal mastermind of like-minded business owners. You can learn more about masterminds here. What you should know before you quit your day job The reason I shared with you these things I wish I would have known before I quit my day job is because if I had gone a bit deeper with my goal and asked myself WHY I wanted it, I would have gotten down to the core feeling I was after. “I want to be my own boss. I want to work when I want, from wherever I want, and make six figures.” The real reason I want that is because I want peace, calm and security in my life. And knowing that, I can bake that into my goal instead of wondering why life still feels crazy and stressful like it did at my day job and while I was side hustling. What you should know before you quit your day job for your business is the deep down WHY. Think about your big goal, your big dream, and then ask yourself: WHY? Why do you want that? And keep asking yourself WHY until you get to the core feeling you’re seeking, and then bake that into your big dream. “I want the security of being my own boss. I want to calmly work when I want, from wherever I want, and peacefully make six figures.” See how different that feels? How less urgent, less stressful? Knowing exactly how you want to feel will help you make decisions that will get you the outcomes AND the feeling.

I’m going to share a BIG mindset tip that will help you feel more grounded in your business, and a really awesome way to authentically differentiate yourself online. Let’s get started!**If you’re a new entrepreneur, chances are you are SUPER excited for the prospect of having your own full time coaching practice… and SUPER frazzled and confused about all of the things you have to do. Last time, I shared the ONE simple funnel that you can focus on as a new coach to book your coaching practice, and today, I’m going to share a big mindset tip that will help you feel even more grounded. So let’s get right into it!I wanna start by asking you something - what do you think needs to happen before you start getting consistent clients, and make enough money to leave your job and have all of the freedom you desires? If you’re anything like how I was, you may believe you have to be mega internet famous with a huge following in order to make real money online. That notion - that I had to be the Internet’s NEXT BIG THING - kept me paralyzed. I constantly compared myself to other coaches, and went back and forth between feeling like I had something to share with the world, and feeling like I couldn’t even compete because everyone else was offering something much more interesting than I was.I asked myself, who was I to hang my shingle as a transformational coach when there were a million other coaches out there? Who would even care?I thought I had to build a big newsletter list, a huge social media following, maybe write a book, do a ton of guest blogging, establish myself as a speaker, have a GORGEOUS website… and THEN I’d start getting clients. If I hadn’t tossed that notion out of the window, I wouldn’t be a coach today. That doesn’t mean I don’t have those things, or want those things even now, but it wasn’t a requirement for me to achieve freedom from my 9-5 and make it as a full-time 6 figure coach. So ask yourself - what contingencies are you putting on your dreams? What are you telling yourself NEEDS to happen before you make it online? And is that really true?Because if your dreams stay vague and hazy - or too many steps ahead of where you are today - you won’t have the power to manifest because you’ll be giving off unclear vibes to the Universe. One day you might want a killer website, the next day you might want to partner with people, the next day you’re trying to learn how to guest blog or learn SEO. It’s too frantic and all over the place.Does that make sense?OK, next I’d love to help ground you into what ACTUALLY needs to happen for the majority of you. Most of you are still in a 9-5, and you’re DREAMING of handing in your 2 weeks notice to your boss and NEVER looking back. For most of you, what you desire most and what’s NEXT for you is FREEDOM. Not fame, not a book, not a retreat in Bali. Are you with me? Cool. So then the question becomes, how do you achieve FREEDOM from your job?Well, that depends on how much you need to make in order to feel comfortable leaving your job, or supporting yourself full-time in your coaching business. So come up with a number (Click here to grab your copy of my free show notes for this episode to complete this exercise) that feels good - that includes it all. Break it down - what does that look like per year, per month? For many of you starting out, that number will be between $5-10K for FREEDOM and then $10K-$20K for feeling like you’re living abundantly.Once you have that number, the question becomes, how much is your signature program, and how many clients do you need to book every month in your signature program to sustain that number? If it’s $5K, you might need 2 2500 clients or 5 1000 clients or 10 500 clients.2-10 clients a month isn’t THAT MUCH. IT doesn’t require a MEGA following. A world tour. A book. It does require you to have your systems set up and in place, but it doesn’t require you to be famous first. Make sense?COOL. So maybe right now, you’re like OK Mona Lisa, I got it - so I need 5 clients a month. Who is going to wanna work with me if there are a million other transformational/health/career/relationship (pick your niche) coaches out there?Well, you’ve GOT TO SHOW up as YOU online - not as this idea of who you think you should be.YOUR VIBE attracts your tribe. Cause while there are a lot of other coaches doing what you wanna do, no one is going to share your message in the way you’re sharing it. Think about it - Beyonce didn’t say, oh, you know what, there are so many good singers in the world, nevermind. And her songs aren’t about anything wildly original - she’s talking about love, relationships, women running the world… and she’s put HER unique flavor into it.Like Beyonce, I didn't re-invent the wheel here. I didn't invent online marketing and funnels. I learned it from experience, yes, and also from teachers who learned from their teachers, who learned from their teachers. Your content isn't original - you are original, and the way you show up is unique to you. You’ve got to learn how to infuse YOUR personality into your marketing, write the way you talk, and share your stories. Share what you’ve been through. Be a human. What got you to where you are today? What makes you passionate about what you’re doing? In the show notes, I’m going to have you write something called your origin story. The story that explains what GOT YOU HERE, what drives you, how you came to be a coach and do what you’re doing today. If you feel squeamish at all about writing about yourself, and you think - OMG who actually cares about all of this, I don’t wanna talk about myself - I want to tell you… you’re right. Your story is going to sound boring and irrelevant and unrelatable to MOST PEOPLE in the world. But to your tribe, those who will wanna work with you and learn from you, your story is going to sound like music to their ears.Alright so that is ALL for today’s episode, I’ll see you on the next episode of the Love, Light And Business Podcast.Download Episode 55's Show Notes
Truth and Dare: Female Empowerment, Authentic Conversation, Real Transformation
Welcome to our longest podcast episode to date and one we could’ve continued for at least another hour…. yes, there was THAT MUCH to talk about. In today’s episode, we sit down with Ashley Smith, a student, healer, and facilitator who is devoting herself to the spiritual cultivation of women and awakening the divine feminine. Ashley does this through healing modalities like sacred tea ceremonies, moon circles, meditation classes, menstruation workshops, and yearly retreats. But how did she get started and why is she deeply devoted to this purpose? We take a major DEEP DIVE into Ashley’s story and learn about the synchronistic events that led her from a conventional path of pursuing a college degree to living in SE Asia for three years, to discovering sacred tea and learning alongside a world master, to returning to the states and developing her business as a sacred healer and continuing her purpose with pilgrimages to Glastonbury, England. As we learn about Ashley’s story, we also touch on topics like addiction and living a life of recovery, how the universe sends us packages of pain and the more extreme they are, the greater the gift is, how living our purpose leads to a narrower path and how it’s all to easy to live with one toe in and one toe out, and how our current climate is a call to arms for all women to rise up and awaken the divine feminine that lives within. So #TADTRIBE, if this feminist talk is speaking to you, then come listen in, learn about Ashley’s story, and begin to connect with the beautiful, powerful, and sacred woman that you already are! Grace & Grit Podcast: Helping Women Everywhere Live Happier, Healthier and More Fit Lives
There are two things that are absolutely essential to any transformation process (yeah, I know… I talk about them a lot because I believe in them THAT MUCH): 1. Awareness 2. Consistent Action Last week, Mary O’Malley and I had a great conversation on the podcast about what it takes to stay awake in your life, so you can change habits that are not serving you into ones that do. This week’s podcast is all about the second point: consistent action. There is a lot of talk these days about changing our thoughts to change our actions, but what if taking action more consistently is what actually lead to more positive thoughts and beliefs around what is possible? Check out this episode to hear my experience with taking action around what I wanted to change in my own life despite how I felt or what I believed about those actions. Loving this podcast? Head over to iTunes and leave a review so the Grace and Grit message can spread to more women who need to hear it. Looking for more Grace & Grit? Visit GraceandGrit.com
Good news, in order to get THAT MUCH better, there are not hundreds or even dozens of things you have to do. There's just one. Throughout this episode, I share with you ways you can think about answering that ONE most important question, "What do I want?" Until you decide what that is, on both a head AND a heart level…Well, you just may find yourself staying busy. Once you identify WHAT you want, then you can more clearly identify what to do and how to get there.
