The 4th Stage of Momentum that we write about in the book Get Momentum is all about monitoring. You see, over years of working with extremely driven AND successful people, we know something about you: You’re rarely satisfied. That is, you achieve something - a goal, a project, an outcome - and you immediately move on to the next one. In this episode of the podcast, I want to share with you something important about how the brain works, how your colleagues get along, and what you can do to be a better version of yourself. Whether you’re a leader, employee, entrepreneur or intern…the ideas in this podcast will help you. When you monitor - when you have a dashboard you can check in with - you make better decisions. And, you make those better decisions sooner! In this episode, you'll learn… Do you know how to engage people in/with what they’re doing? When you know what you’re looking for, you can change earlier. It’s possible to “hack” your brain to feel more engaged at work/in life. What I did that changed the way students in my classes learned (in 1998). There’s a challenge you can take, to be a better version of yourself! Please do leave us a question, an idea, a prompt below, so we know what YOU think of this ‘cast. The fifth stage of Momentum, we call: Modify. When I looked that word up in the dictionary, I knew how important it was to what you’re working on. Ready? Here’s the definition: “make partial or minor changes to (something), typically so as to improve it or to make it less extreme.” So, as you think about what YOU need to be doing differently, are you willing to make a “partial” change? You see, one of the things we hear from people who think they’re interested in Get Momentum is that they don’t have time to commit to the program AND that they need to make changes in less than a year. Well, the Get Momentum Leadership Academy requires a minimum of 2 hours of study a month, and the program takes a year to complete. Does anyone else se the irony? It’s as if those big changes you need to have made a year from now will somehow just “magically appear.” I’m here to tell you, they won’t. In this episode, you'll learn… Is it really worth it to take a little step to make a big change? To identify the things you KNOW you need to change. How to regain up to 2 hours a day - every day. Think you don’t have meetings? Do you talk, agree, and do things? So far this year, I’ve recorded an episode of the podcast every two weeks for you. Here is number 210! Last month, Get Momentum members around the world spent 31 days studying how they prepare for, attend, lead and follow up with meetings. Over and over again, leaders wrote to Jodi and I saying things like, “I had NO idea just how many meetings I actually attend each week!” Here is what one member from Belgium wrote: It's very funny: when I had my session with Jodi this month I told her that this module was not so related to my business and that I don't have the meetings that bigger companies have. But she gave me a whole different perspective on the concept "meetings" and since then, I've been meeting with more people than ever, enjoying every one of them. What attracts me most in those informal meetings is the amount of information we exchange over a nice conversation in hip and energizing places. Just to say that it has been a more than pleasant experience to set up "meetings" in New York City while I'm here. In this episode, you'll learn… Do you about the “Halfway Rule” and meetings? That every meetings needs a PAL. There is a better (and worse) time to start a meeting. Trust is built at the transactional level. You DO meet more than you think! Is there a project you want to get started you keep putting off? Are you frustrated that you STILL don’t have work-life balance? I read recently that Marisa Meyer is really making a statement about the intersection of work-life focus. Writing on her Tumblr, she said: “Since my pregnancy has been healthy and uncomplicated and since this is a unique time in Yahoo’s transformation, I plan to approach the pregnancy and delivery as I did with my son three years ago, taking limited time away and working throughout.” Would you compare your ability to achieve work-life balance with someone who has a net worth of $380MM? Would you be able to do more, be more and have more if you made nearly $1MM a week? I wouldn’t. In fact, if you REALLY want to stress yourself out, compare yourself - what you have, where you are, what you do, how you live - to someone who has different goals, different opportunities, and different realities than you. Stop trying to achieve work-life balance. Instead, get momentum on your most important things. In this episode, you'll learn… Do you know what Jason and Jodi are working on these days? Are you committed? Is winning a “nice to” or a “HAVE to”?I spent an hour on a video chat yesterday with a client I’m working with in Harare, Zimbabwe. Yes, you read that correctly… A book reader in Africa has invited us to create and facilitate a “Leadership Development Symposium” for three groups to come and study together. For the first 30 minutes we talked, we shared stories of our experiences: Linda has been “leading the community” for more than 30 years, and she discovered my book when a TED Speaker - Saki Mafundikwa - brought it to her after he and I met in Portland, Oregon last July! This week’s podcast uncovers some of the secrets I’ve discovered over the years of studying high performance workplace performance. First of all “work” is a word we sometimes mis-understand. You see, some people think work is something they “go to” and “get paid for.” That’s not our definition. To us here at The Womack Companies, work is what we do because we see something that could be #better. (Yes, we DO use the hashtag before the word better…) In this episode, you'll also learn… What happens when you commit to something with your heart AND mind. Jason has traveled to San Francisco and Marin County. Jason’s passport is going to get stamped a LOT over the next 6 months. Why “thinking” isn’t enough. Are you visiting with family today? Are you looking to make 2015 better? As you’ll hear in today’s episode, I almost DIDN’T publish one of these for you this week. You see, I know it’s a holiday and all. So, listen in to find out WHY I did get this done, and sent it to you. Now, as you look toward next year, ask yourself, “Am I going to be better in 12 months?” If you answered that question with a “Yes,” I’ll ask you a follow-up question: “What is the ONE thing you know you need to be doing more of, or more consistently in order to be better in a year?” If I could give you a tactic, here’s what I’d say, “Write down what you just thought of. Put in on your computer monitor, or on the front of your notebook that is always with you. And, look at it EVERY SINGLE DAY. As I wrote in my book, you get better at what you focus on getting better at. In this episode, you'll also learn… Why Jason published a podcast episode the day he’s celebrating Christmas! How to get TWO FREE months of Get Momentum coaching. Why Jason thinks the Beatles (yes, the band!) would have loved the book. What “Toyota” manufacturing has to do with “Leadership Development.” Finally, this “could be” one of the last podcast episodes that Jason records for you! Ok all, we LOVE reading your comments in the box below. So, click to rate the podcast, and leave your comments and questions in the blog post/show notes. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! What if you were more persistent? What goal do you have to “Stick To”? Studying, working alongside, and coaching some of the most effective and successful entrepreneurs, athletes and managers in the world, I’ve learned a thing or two about persistence. In fact, while I was at the PopTech.org conference in Camden, Maine last October, I made this one of my “4th Questions” that I asked people. (If you don’t know what I mean when I say “4th question,” email me. I’ll send that section of my book to ya!) During the conversation with my new “friends,” I’d ask, “What goal do you have to Stick To in order to make happen in the next year or two?” It was so cool. As people shared some of their deepest goals and biggest dreams, we stayed in what I call the “energy of the possible.” Over the past month, I’ve sent emails to three people, with ideas that I’ve continued to think about related to our conversation. Tell me, do you have someone on your team who’s continuing to think about your goals, even when you’re not? It’s kinda awesome to have those people on your team. I can speak from experience. In this episode, you'll also learn… How to surround yourself by and with people who will ask you BIG questions. One of the BEST tactics Jason knows of to experience more success and achieve more goals. There are three OTHER tactics you could be learning about this month. A “dictionary definition” of the word, Perseverance. Where Jason will be in the next week or so! Hey, have you ever commented on a blog post? It’s “that time of the year.” I’ve made two different Spotify playlists for holiday music (one to play during the “in-between-times” during seminars this month, the other to play in my hotel room or office while I’m working!). Now, since I celebrate Christmas, I did write to Santa to ask him for the one thing I want this year…In case any of you know someone who works at Specialized Bikes, let them know Santa’s gonna come by to pick up my bicycle! Are the right people on your team? If you know what drags you down, will you change? Twice in my professional career, I’ve had to leave jobs NOT because of the work, but because of the community I had become a part of. In 1999 and again in 2006 I realized that the power of the people was overwhelming my ability to do MY work here on the planet. That was when I started to research this sociological phenomenon I call “the people, not the work.” In this episode, you will learn… People leave people, they don’t necessarily quit the work. Play Episode Listen Later Oct 3, 2014 6:46

Last month over at GetMomentum.co we addressed the topic of “Perseverance” and how effective leaders need to be able to go through the tough times…especially when they are tough. As you look around your work and your world, pick one goal that you know you’d like to achieve, and clearly state what the experience will be when you get there.  I know of 4 productivity tactics that will give you the super-power you will need when the times get tough. However, you know me…and I’m only going to focus on ONE of these tactics each week. That way, you don’t feel overwhelmed, and you can test the information I share with you bit-by-bit…or, as my writing teacher Anne Lamott said, “Write that book bird-by-bird…” Ok, so here are the four ways to persevere - again, I’m only going to talk to you about one a week… This week’s tactic: Clarify your vision of what “There” looks like The other three are: Build a team of peers who support you Reflect - daily - on your wins Focus, Focus, Focus on what you’re about to do next During the last “member’s-only” town hall at Get Momentum, we asked, “What gets in your way of achieving on your most important goals?” From around the world, they told us: I have too many priorities I’m too distracted at my desk There are competing intentions from management Does any of that sound familiar?  You see… I’m a student of leadership, and I look for the qualities in and of those around me who demonstrate leadership. I’m also a historian - so, I look to the past for anchors, examples of times past, that I can look to for advice and the occasional bit of inspiration… Here’s one from a long-time-ago American President, John Quincy Adams… “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” Want to know how to persevere through tough times? I have a writing tactic for you and here it is…take out 4 note-sized cards, and on each one write down one of those “mores.” Here they are again: Dream more Learn more Do more Become more Then, every day for the next 5 days add ONE item to each card representing where you see yourself - your vision - 36 months from now. On day 6 - if you do this 5 days in a row - call me, and we’ll talk about your vision and I’ll coach you with the one best tools I know of, to make a vision…a reality.

I know there are 2 things you can do to increase the likelihood good things will happen to you. Each one puts you in a better position to gain momentum and achieve your goals. In this episode, I’ll tell you all about how to be in the right place at the right time In the next episode of this series, I’ll tell you how important it is to get current; You’ve got to clean the slate because it’s hard to take on more when you’re already buried. Let me start with a story... During the winter of 2012 someone told me: “You’re so lucky, you got a book published.” I gotta tell you, it has stuck with me ever since. Whenever I work with a small business owner or a newly promoted manager, I think to myself, “How are they managing - and creating - their luck?” So in this podcast I want to tell you step by step how I created this “lucky” experience. And, it all starts from the cliche “ Be in the right place at the right time.” Take those two pieces of advice, one at a time... RIGHT PLACE: This means that you’re getting out, you’re putting yourself in a position to meet people, to see things, to do things. Here’s a question for you: Where do you need to be, that will increase the likelihood good luck will happen? Click pause on the podcast, and answer that question. Here it is again: Where do you need to be, that will increase the likelihood good luck will happen? RIGHT TIME: You’ve heard the saying, “Timing is everything,” right? Well, here’s what I know - and trust: Luck doesn’t happen EVERY time, but it could happen at ANY time... Just a few weeks ago, in New York City, I met a woman in the elevator as we were traveling down to the lobby. Between the 7th floor and the 1st floor, we shared a conversation. As the doors opened, she said, “Do you have a copy I can buy right now?” Yup, my “elevator pitch” worked that day! Was I lucky? Nope… right place…right time. Let me tell you the story of getting “lucky” and getting my book published. On March 12th, 2011… I was at a conference, it was rainy morning, and as I reviewed the conference schedule I saw a meeting titled, “From Blog to Book.” The breakout session was at a hotel a 1.2 mile walk away from where I was. So, I had a choice… The easy thing would have been to choose a different breakout, and skip that one. I mean it was cold, rainy and windy outside…not a great day for a walk. But, as the saying goes, “You’ve got to play to win.” So walk I did. At the end of the session I introduced myself to the three book publishers who were the panelists, and gave them my card. I had been writing a blog, I said, and now I wanted to write a book. They all smiled…one guy even said, “Good luck with that.” An hour later I was back near the main conference center, about to cross a street when I looked up to see Matt, one of the publishers on the panel. So, I reintroduced myself, told him again about my plan to publish a book, and even said, “I’ve started a book proposal, can I send it to you?” He gave me his card - again - and said he’d take a look. And that put me in to action. You see, over the previous 6 months, on again/off again, I’d been working on writing a book proposal. I’d even submitted a version of it to another publisher, and NEVER got a response. So, when Matt said he’d look it over, I knew I had to act fast… I called Jodi, said I’d catch up later that evening, went to the hotel room, and worked for 4 hours straight to finish a version of the proposal I could send to Wiley Publishing. I clicked send, and met Jodi for dinner - That was March 12th. On March 21st - I got a clarification email from Lauren, an editor at Wiley, asking me just a couple of questions. I received that email at 6pm while I was in Keene, New Hampshire. I changed my dinner plans and sent a revision of the proposal the next morning. On April 4th, I opened my email inbox to see an email titled, “Welcome to Wiley.” I was in Chicago that afternoon, getting ready for a seminar the next day with a world-wide organization named, the “Institute for Management Studies.” Can you guess what I put in my introduction THAT morning? For the next 4 months, I traveled to more than 20 cities, visited 4 countries, and presented 39 Leadership Workshops for Fortune 100 companies, universities and even a not-for-profit organization in New York City. Meanwhile, I wrote…and wrote…and wrote. On August 24th of 2011, I submitted the Final Draft of the book, Your Best Just Got Better and on February 7th of 2012, my book was published. In less than 10 months I went from, Blog to Book. And that…is how I got lucky…

And, yes, by the way this is the SECOND in a series of two episodes…I recommend you try one of these for a week or two before you hold yourself accountable to the other way to “get lucky more." Before I share this tactic, I will ask: Have you rated the podcast yet? Please, take a moment when you’re done and visit iTunes or Stitcher and leave your comments. If you do, email to let me know. I’ll send you something special - no matter HOW many stars you give! My email address is Jason@WomackCompany.com So, if you want to get lucky more, you’ve got to put yourself in position to get lucky more. I hope you weren’t expecting me to give you some new, profound, amazing tool. No, you’re probably sitting there (or walking, or driving) thinking, “Yeah, I gotta put myself in a position to get lucky more.” But, the question is how? How do you do that? I’m going to tell you WHY to do it, and then HOW. Look, by the end of today you’ll either have moved the mission forward…Or not. You’ll be closer to your goals…Or not. And, it’s going to take a lot - a lot of work, a lot of chance, a lot of luck, and a lot of effort to achieve some of those goals that you’re chasing. In 2007, Jodi and I started our company. You may notice, when you visit the Web site www.WomackCompany.com that we did, indeed, name our company The Jason Womack Company. Look, it’s all we had back then. I mean, up until that point I was a high school teacher in Ojai, CA and a senior management consultant with David Allen and Company - you know, the guy who wrote the book called Getting Things Done for the 11 years before that. Let me tell you how lucky we’ve gotten over the past few years: Jodi and I started a company - a consulting firm, serving international and domestic clients, several of which are Fortune 100 companies. I’ve been on stage at the same conference where speakers such as Les Brown, Dick Cheney, Benjamin Zander. We have coordinated TED events in our home town of Ojai, CA. I published my book - with a New York City publisher - within 11 months of meeting the Vice President of Wiley Publishing. I’ve completed 5 half-ironman distance triathlons; and I’ve won a 5-miler running race in Homer, Alaska. Now, you’re probably wondering, HOW did you do all of that Jason? Well, first of all, I’ve just put a drop in to the bucket. I wanted to give you a sense of what happens when you DO what I’m about to teach you. But first, I have to ask: How bad do you want it? I mean it? If you’re thinking that things are fine, that you really DON’T need to change, here’s my advice. Stop listening to this episode of the podcast. I’m serious. Press stop, and move right along. Ok, you still here? That means you’re ready to take things up a level, so here’s my tactic - the one that I use EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. to get more lucky… Do what you say you’re going to do…In the time you say you’re going to do it. When you tell someone you’ll have something to them by Monday; do it. When you tell someone you’ll get back to them, do it. When you tell yourself you’ll do something, do it. Here’s my challenge to you, if you’re ready. Take out a blank piece of paper and on top write, “What have I said I was going to do…For who?” Over the next 5 days, I want you to continue adding to that list. Even if you DO one of them, add it to the list. I want you to see what happens, in the space of just 120 hours, when you move through the day-to-day of life. You say yes to a lot. If luck is defined as success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions… I encourage you to put a bit more of that success in your own two hands. Get read to get lucky, do what you say you’re going to do.

168: Benefits of Being A Team Player

In this week’s episode, I discuss why teams go weird, why people go off course when working on a project, and lastly, I discuss some solid ideas about how you can enhance and build up your team over the next couple weeks. One of the reasons that projects go weird is that there is an inability to see the world through someone else’s lens. Also, what’s a rookie move in the workplace? Recognizing the flaws and what didn’t go right. What about the veteran move? Looking around your world and recognizing that your mission is being moved forward.
