In this episode of the Slow Style Home podcast, I talk with Abi Dare, author of 'The Soft Minimalist Home' and the 'These Four Walls' blog. We discuss her unique take on minimalism, which is not just about having fewer things but about making space for what truly matters. Abi explains that minimalism is an approach rather than a rigid style, and how her synesthesia influences her preference for a neutral and calm home environment. She highlights that minimalism can look different for everyone—whether it's a calm, neutral space or a vibrant room full of art. We also talk about practical examples from her book, which includes homes that are both colorful and minimalist. The conversation emphasizes the importance of creating a home that reflects your personality and supports your well-being. We also discuss why style matters and how decluttering and intentional design can lead to a more fulfilling home environment. To use the Slow Style approach in your home, start with this free guide on how to create a vision that sets you up for every design decision you'll need to make!Sign up here to receive the free guide (and lots of suppport along the way).

Australian music is on the rise. With the world around us locked out and international bands no longer on the immediate touring circuit, music fans are being forced to look into our homegrown talent more than ever and the results are showing. Not only are our emerging bands receiving more exposure, but some of our seasoned campaigners are also benefitting from local interest.More recognizable bands like Frenzal Rhomb, Grinspoon and The Superjesus are back on the touring wheel and slaying it with each performance, but other bands from that era – that are just as good but not as much in the media spotlight – are also finding a resurgence in popularity. One of those is Tumbleweed who this year celebrate 30 years in the Australian music industry. It is a milestone shared by the above bands and more, and one which is richly deserved for Tumbleweed who have always maintained a strong presence despite never quite reaching the same heights. Tumbleweed will be touring as part of the Uncaged Festival early next year, joining Magic Dirt, Kingswood, The Getaway Plan, The Superjesus, Tumbleweed, Bodyjar, End Of Fashion, The Hard Ons, The Meanies and Twelve Foot Ninja plus a host of rising bands such as Psycroptic, These Four Walls, Dregg and Lagerstein.Front man Richie Lewis joined HEAVY to discuss Uncaged and 30 years as a rock band."Yeah I am,” he beamed when I mention they must be looking forward to sharing the stage with their mates again – old and new. “We sort of feel like we're arrows that have been pulled back on a bow waiting to be released. That's how we feel. It's a real cool festival. I like how it's diverse. It's got old people like us and some of my great friends like The Hard Ons, The Meanies and Magic Dirt, and it's got a whole bunch of young uns as well which I'm looking forward to. I think that's a great thing about festivals full stop is I'm always surprised by something so I'm looking forward to seeing some of the other stuff as well."With a well balanced line-up of the past, present, and future, it could be easy to see festivals such as Uncaged as something of a changing of the guard, but as Lewis points out is could also be something far more simple."Or an appreciation of rock as a genre,” he smiled. “A celebration of all of it and what we've got in this country at the moment. Most of those bands... The Hard Ons just put out a fantastic album, Meanies are always putting out something. Magic Dirt, us, we're still alive and we're still putting out stuff so I think it's really cool we aren't being caught up in this trap of being something for the latest up and coming thing and being on the cool crew or whatever. They want to spread their wings wide and brought in everything that they like about Australian music."In the full interview, Richie tells us who he is most looking forward to playing with at Uncaged, bringing through the next generation of music, the fact it is a 100% Australian line-up, celebrating 30 years as a band, Tumbleweed's new singles box set which comes out on November 26, their anniversary run of shows and more.

It’s a familiar refrain. The 15-year itch. It’s the perfect time to look back and how far a group as come — and wonder aloud how much gas is left in the tank. The More I Sleep the Less I Dream is a 15-year album. The fourth LP from a band whose lineup has remained remarkably consistent since forming to perform at a high school talent show. It finds the group searching for the magic that helped catapult their 2009 debut These Four Walls up the indie chart. Thompson admits that the group spent a couple of records hunting down chart success, but adds that this latest finds WWPJ working with something far more authentic and organic.

EP273 features a very talented musician/songwriter Adam Thompson from the band "We Were Promised Jetpacks"! Things talked about in this episode was having energy, sleep at home vs sleep on tour, pursuing music, The album "These Four Walls", the writing process, songs then and now, The new album "The More I Sleep The Less I Dream" putting a song together and The perfect song.
"It's always been our ethos to take whatever negative shit or bad stuff that's going on and kind of flip it on its head and accept that there's a lesson or a value in it that can be turned into a positive," explained Gray Vickers, guitarist for These Four Walls, talking about the bands latest single 'Over and Over'. "Musically, when we were putting it together, it came together really quickly. It was just in the practice space and within half an hour or an hour we had the bare bones of the song done. Of course, we put in a bit of work in after that but in terms of the vocal melodies and guitar parts and all that sort of stuff, that was pretty much knocked out in the first day. Steve (Gibb, vocals) likes to take the vocals away and really mold them. He will put the song on and drive around and listen to it for a couple of hours and whatever is going on in his mind at the time he basically marinates in that for a couple of hours and writes it down and does all that stuff. I think for him it's about overcoming the barrage of negativity that exists from day to day. He's a really out there person, but he's also a sensitive person and... when there's so much negativity in social media and the people we interact with all the time people tend to stew on things a lot and I think for him it's about getting that out of his head and realising the world is not that bad. There are some assholes in it but we can always be better and be better versions of ourselves and that's how we get to that point."Listen to the full audio to hear Gray talk more about the single, the benefits of releasing E.P's and singles over full albums, the reasons behind the bands decision to relocate to Queensland from New Zealand, the difference in music cultures and opportunities between New Zealand and Australia, how to stay relevant in the modern saturated music market and more.Kris Peters
