Certain things in this world should always be spoken in the same breath. Be it respect, acceptance or merely just because that's the way it has always been, some things you just don't mess with. Like a pie and tomato sauce, a Tim Tam straw, bacon and eggs, and The Meanies and Australian music. It seems The Meanies can't ever put a foot wrong, even when it comes to apathetically releasing a song recorded 25 years ago that just happens to have worked its way to the surface, although, admittedly they did hedge their bets somewhat by inviting another classic Aussie band from that era in Frenzal Rhomb to provide a cover of Play This Song Every Night on the B Side. From the late 1980s and into this century, Melbourne pop punk-meets-hardcore-meets-punk-meets-attitude outfit The Meanies have crawled and fought their way into the halls of Australian music royalty, generally not caring either way about the trappings of success and the money and problems that invariably come with it. Put simply, The Meanies are the band that keeps on giving, and if you have no idea about why or how these guys have etched themselves into the realm of champions, then I suggest you repeat Grade 5. Or maybe listen to this chat HEAVY recently had with frontman Link Meanie. We ask him how a song could just be found after 25 years in captivity, to which he had a strangely semi-serious answer."We initially released an EP and a couple of more EPs from that recording session," he explained. "The more traditional Meanies-type songs. But I was just a bit confused at the time and recorded a whole bunch of ridiculous shit. There was a disco song, there's a fucking country song. I don't know what the fuck I was thinking, but yeah. So we did release those, and we had a whole bunch of other stuff that we've gradually done a bunch of singles with. So we'll have one of those tracks on the A side and a couple of Aussie bands covering our songs on the other side. So we've been lucky enough to have some really good bands do that."In the full interview, Link told us the story behind the suddenly found music and why it has been drip-fed over the years. We discussed the song itself, Shutdown, and the funkier direction it takes, asking if that was a direction The Meanies had contemplated taking 25 years ago. He told us of the fun he had writing and recording that sexier number, and the potential for The Meanies to rebrand themselves as sex symbols. We chatted about having Frenzal Rhomb and Leeches! feature on the B Side, each band covering a different song by The Meanies. We also spoke about the friendship and connection between them and Frenzal, and some fun times they have had together over the years. The topic of grunge music and its global invasion was raised, and how The Meanies started up around the same time, but never conformed to what was a rapidly expanding genre. He told us about the band's single launch tour starting on October 31 and what fans can expect, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In California's sun-drenched enclave of Montecito, the knives are reportedly out for the Duchess of Sussex, as local society figures have given Meghan Markle a rather barbed new nickname. According to Mail columnist Lisa Kennedy Montgomery, some have taken to calling her “pumpkin spice” — and, more pointedly, “Walmart” — accusing the Duchess of selling out after a flurry of media and lifestyle ventures.Unlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! PLOT SYNOPSIS & DISCUSSION (Ripped straight from Wikipedia) MIKEY The Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory follow a distress call with the identification of the Time Lord the Corsair to an asteroid outside the universe. After landing in a junkyard, the TARDIS shuts down and its matrix disappears. The asteroid, called House, removes the matrix, and places it in the body of a woman called Idris. MARC The Doctor discovers the Corsair and hundreds of other Time Lords on the asteroid were murdered by House and that two inhabitants of the asteroid, Uncle and Auntie, are constructed from the body parts of Time Lords. Upon learning that the Doctor is the last Time Lord and that no more will ever arrive, House transfers its consciousness into the TARDIS to escape from the rift. Amy and Rory are trapped inside as the House-controlled TARDIS dematerializes. Uncle and Auntie are allowed to die. MIKEY The Doctor learns that Idris contains the personality of the TARDIS's matrix and that they can talk to each other for the first time. With minutes before her body fails, Idris reveals that House had stranded many TARDISes before, and that its pocket universe is hours away from collapsing. The Doctor and Idris work together to construct a makeshift TARDIS from scraps, and then pursue House. MARC Aboard the Doctor's TARDIS, House threatens to kill Amy and Rory. He plays with their senses as they try to flee through the corridors, and then sends an Ood called Nephew after them. Idris makes a psychic connection with Rory to give him directions to a secondary control room, where he and Amy are able to lower the TARDIS shields. This allows the Doctor to land the makeshift TARDIS in the secondary control room, which atomises Nephew. MIKEY House deletes the secondary control room as he prepares to break through the rift to the main universe, which the Doctor anticipates. The TARDIS's safety protocols transfer them to the main control room, where the dying Idris releases the TARDIS's matrix back to the TARDIS, destroying House. MARC A remnant of the TARDIS's matrix, in Idris' body, states that she will not be able to speak to the Doctor again but will be there for him. Idris's body then disappears as the TARDIS matrix is fully restored. THANK YOU PATRONS Mikey: Marc and I make our living as full-time musicians. PLOT SYNOPSIS & DISCUSSION MIKEY - The book opens at Haven Mining Colony moment's before Shepherd Book's death, then flashes back 2 years to tin interior of the Serenity, where Book has a conversation with Jayne about whether or not he'll go to hell, and then walk in on Mal and Zoe roughing up an arms dealer during a deal gone bad, whereupon he returns to his quarters to pray. MARC - Then the story flashes back 2 more years, to Southdown Abbey, where we witness Book's discussion with the Abbess about his decision to leave the Abbey and return to the world. As he exits the Abbey, he walks right past Kaylee who says, “You're coming with us.” MIKEY - Another ten years earlier, and we watch him get into a drunken brawl with an alliance soldier who recognized him. They fight, and the officer kicks him unconscious in the street. When he wakes, Book is in a shelter and has a spiritual moment over a bowl of chicken soup. He eats the soup and walks the streets, stopping under the neon glow of a cross, presumably over the door to the Abbey. MARC - Then, six years earlier, we witness Book as an Alliance officer, being harshly reprimanded for organizing an action that cost 4000 lives–the very action mentioned by the Alliance officer ten years later in the street fight. Book asks for investigation powers, to uncover the moles, but is stripped of rank and kicked off the Alliance vessel, an attempt to cover up their embarrassment. He is forced into an escape pod and jettisoned. It crashes on a nearby planet, and he stumbles across the sand, alone. MIKEY - Four years earlier, we watch Book as an Alliance cadet, physically beating a prisoner during an interrogation while two officers discuss how driven he is, how tactically brilliant, and how arrogant. MARC - Four years before that, we see Book in street clothes, a long brown coat, fighting three alliance soldiers. He beats two of them easily, and tells the other to run. He then shows up at a resistance meeting where they're discussing getting an operative, a mole, into the Alliance to rise through the ranks and feed them information. MIKEY - Book volunteers, and they replace his left eye with a biomechanical robotic one, that secretly transmits everything he sees to them. He'll need a new background, though. His is too connected to the resistance, too traceable. He stalks and kills a young traveler and assumes his identity, the identity of Derrial Book. MARC - Six years prior, we watch a couple of young street thieves robbing a couple at gunpoint and then running from the police. One of them is named Henry, and he uses his skill and daring to escape, abandoning his accomplice. Later, in a diner, he is recognized by a police officer who receives his picture on a communication device while sitting next to henry at the counter. He reaches for his gun, but Henry has already drawn and cocked his own. “Don't,” he says. MIKEY - The exchange was observed by another diner, and afterwards, that man has a conversation with Henry in the streets outside, and hands him a flyer, trying to convince him to join the Independence movement. Henry declines, and returns to his apartment. From the stairwell, however, he sees a police team battering down his door to arrest him. He looks at the flyer for the Independence movement and slips out of the building, unnoticed. MARC - And finally, Ten years earlier, we witness young Henry returning home to a shabby, rundown apartment, expressing relief that his abusive father is asleep. He slips into a curtained off room and listens to music on headphones, finding escape. His father wakes and beats him, and then, when his father passes back out, Henry packs his things and leaves, determined to make a life for himself beyond his abusive father and poverty. In the late '90s, someone asked Blink-182's Tom DeLonge if he wanted to go see The Blue Meanies perform. Both bands happened to be in Australia at the same time. His response: "Are they still scaring kids?" The answer was obviously yes, so Tom passed. The Blue Meanies formed in 1989 in Carbondale, Illinois by Jay Vance, who would later start the avant-garde project Captured By Robots. The Blue Meanies started as a Fishbone-style party band, but when they relocated to Chicago a few years later, the group evolved into one of the most menacing bands in the 90s ska scene. And many kids were scared, especially when the Meanies opened for bands like Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake and Goldfinger. On this episode, we dig deep into Blue Meanies' history and talk about their early years playing the famous Lost Cross House in Carbondale. We talk about a very special show at The Outhouse in Lawrence, Kansas, where they met MU330 and Skankin' Pickle. We also talk about Billy's couple year period after Kiss Your Ass Goodbye that he lived in New Orleans, the Full Throttle years, where they rehearsed in an abandoned grocery store in Chicago, the Ska Against Racism and Plea For Peace tours, their Post-Wave MCA album signing, and a song the band wrote for the Troma film Sucker. Bill also talks about two big influences on him: Tom Waits and Nick Cave. Support the show

HOLY CRAPPPPP AM I IN "TOLERANT" CALIFORNIA OR BACK IN THE JIM CROW SOUTH OF THE 1940s???? Sorry, I couldn't tell. I have to be escorted to class by security because liberals are hateful and tolerant of anyone who doesn't bow down to whatever they say. They're behaving the same way Democrats did in the Jim Crow era. For some reason liberals don't seem to understand that just because an individual makes a statement that they don't like, it doesn't mean they should be assaulted/threatened/harassed. We could teach that lesson to a 2 year old. What does it mean to "support" your gay child? Is support in 2022 defined the same way love is in 2022 (meaning: One must support EVERY DECISION one's child makes without question or they don't love them). *I said pro-choice in the episode, I meant pro-lifeY'all we have a lot to discuss.
