We dispense with the niceties this month and discuss an album where we have quite differing opinions. Welcome to Episode 56 of This is Not Happening (TINH), an Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'. We pick a theme and each pick a song that represents that theme. We judge the selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?In Part 1, David, resident 'Pop Being', has the pleasure of presenting an album from one of his genuine musical obsessions. 'Saya' the latest release by Saya Gray.In Part 2, following the theme of 'Saya', break-up and heart-break, we play Spin It or Bin It with the simple theme of 'Heart Break' with no additional rules! ----- Part 1 | Saya Gray | 'Saya' -----To say David is a Saya Gray fan is something of an understatement. He has been championing the strange sounds of Saya for nearly 3 years. Nobody's really sure if this is her debut album or not but that's not important. It is an album and an artist that has divided opinion on the pod. 2 of us love this album, 1 of us doesn't, and 1 of us has had such a busy month at work that we have no idea what they think pre-recording.Regardless of how we feel about this album individually, we all think it's an album that deserves a listen. Listen to the album, listen to the pod, tell us what you think.Listen to the album ... HERE.Watch the World Cafe Podcast / Interview ... HERE.Watch the AMAZING Tiny Desk Performance ... HERE.Watch some 'Visualisers' (music videos!?!) ... HERE.Buy some stuff ... HERE. ----- Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'Heart-Break -----Was music originally created to express heart-break? Probably not but it definitely feels like it when you start looking for your favourite tracks that embrace the subject. We've chosen a track each that may not be what you expect.Guy chose 'A Little Respect' by Erasure. David chose 'Already Dead' by Beck. Joey chose 'It's Not Right, But It's Okay' by Whitney Houston. Nolan chose 'Shiver' by Lucy Rose. Send us a textKansas City-based post-metal duo Idle Heirs, featuring Coalesce frontman Sean Ingram and producer/musician Josh Barber, have announced the release of their debut album, Life Is Violence, dropping April 11th, 2025. The album will be celebrated with a record release show the same evening at Warehouse on Broadway in Kansas City, MO, alongside metal heavyweights Norma Jean.Born from necessity and personal upheaval, Life Is Violence is a searing, emotionally charged collection of eight tracks written and recorded in complete creative isolation at Ocean Sound Studio in Norway. The collaboration between Ingram and Barber—longtime friends and kindred spirits—came to fruition after years of false starts, catalyzed by Barber's self-imposed writing retreat in the Pacific Northwest. Surrounded by storms and solitude, he created the sonic foundation for what would become Idle Heirs. The band recently appeared on The Vulgar Display of Podcast, part of The Barn Podcast Network, in which Ingram and Barber discussed their intense creative process, the album's introspective themes of grief, generational trauma, and paternal legacy, and why they originally never intended for these songs to be shared publicly.Singles like Dead Ringer and Pillow Talk give a glimpse into the band's dynamic range—melding haunting atmosphere, crushing weight, and a raw vocal performance that sees Ingram pushing into new territory far beyond his hardcore roots. With Life Is Violence, Idle Heirs offer more than an album—they deliver a moment of vulnerability and defiance, shaped by isolation, purpose, and love.Catch Idle Heirs live on April 11 at Warehouse on Broadway for their official album release show.www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Hooray! Happy to announce the release of my new album Moon Harp. This track is a little different to my usual style. Ice crystals + Refracted Moonlight = Moon Aura. How cool is that?

In Michael's address, entitled “The Challenges of a Public Native Plant Garden: Maintenance, Interpretation and Compromise” he will explore the New York Botanical Garden's commitment to highlighting the native flora of northeastern North America, a vision that traces back to its founding Director and its evolution into a completely reimagined and significantly expanded native plant garden. She has shaped a singular career devoted to the beauty and possibility of pure creative discovery. After getting her start as co-founder of the pioneering jazz-pop duo Once Blue, the New York-based singer/songwriter went on to release a series of acclaimed solo albums animated by the quiet force of her captivating vocals, and collaborating along the way with her husband, the jazz bassist Larry Grenadier and luminaries Argentine pianist Guillermo Klein and legendary jazz drummer Paul Motian.Produced by Rebecca Martin and recorded in Portugal by Mário Barreiros, SHE features 13 original songs that blend voice and acoustic guitar to create a minimalistic yet powerful sound with deep emotional resonance. Exploring themes of identity, transformation, and the passage of time, the album fosters a reflective, meditative space that invites listeners to fully immerse themselves in its introspective atmosphere. In one of her boldest turns to date, Martin's new album SHE (Sunnyside Records) marks her first body of work made entirely on her own. Martin graces every moment of SHE with the clarity and character of her distinct vocal phrasing. As revealed throughout her new recording, Martin's commitment to creating space informs nearly all aspects of her artistry, including everything from the album's sparse orchestration to her underlying desire to summon a gratifying sense of stillness within all those who listen. Rebecca will be performing songs from the album joined by Clare Manchon and Anthea White on background vocals during the album's Release Party at The Local on February 28th in Saugerties.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFYITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCAFollow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast

Breaking Boundaries: Inside The Angel's SupaCrucuail Heist 88 Album Release Los Angeles, CA — In an electrifying interview on “A Conversation with Host Floyd Marshall Jr.,” acclaimed film composer and music producer, The Angel, dives deep into the creative process behind her latest album, SupaCrucuail Heist 88. Known for her innovative scores in film and television, The Angel gives an inside look at how she shaped the soundscape of Heist 88, the Courtney B. Vance-starring film that has captivated audiences with its 1980s Chicago bank heist setting. Crafting Suspense Through Sound Set in 1988 Chicago, Heist 88 isn't your typical action-packed heist movie. As The Angel explains, the film's true suspense stems from its meticulous plotting and psychological tension rather than explosions and chase scenes. “It's more about the internal workings of the mind of our criminal mastermind,” she shares. To enhance this layered storytelling, The Angel blended organic and electronic sounds with subtle nods to 1980s house music, giving the film an authentic vibe that resonates with its setting. The Angel collaborated closely with director Menhad Shota, whom she has worked with on several projects. “Our goal was to create a score that not only fits the narrative but also adds depth to the characters' emotional journeys,” she adds. This required The Angel to carefully balance Chicago's signature house music elements with cinematic orchestration, resulting in a soundtrack that's both true to the period and innovative in its approach. A Journey Back to the Height of House Music Capturing the essence of 1980s Chicago house music was no small feat. The Angel highlighted how she integrated iconic club sounds from the era into the score, enhancing the movie's suspense without overpowering its narrative. “I wanted to evoke the feeling of suspense through sounds that audiences of the time would immediately recognize,” she notes. This approach creates a dynamic experience, transporting viewers directly into the era of the film. Through creative use of rhythm and tempo, The Angel designed her score to echo the pulse of Chicago's vibrant club scene. The Angel explained how she matched the tempo of the music to specific story moments, especially in scenes where characters are planning and executing the heist, allowing viewers to feel the tension as it unfolds. The Art of Scoring Heists and Character Complexity In Heist 88, suspense isn't just a tool to advance the story; it's a way to explore the characters' psychological states. The Angel describes how she used three-dimensional musical elements to mirror the intricacies of Vance's character, a criminal mastermind who pulls off one of the biggest bank heists in U.S. history. “I aimed to create themes that reflect his meticulous planning, as well as the stress and stakes of every moment,” she shares. The result? A soundtrack that's rich in suspense and layered with emotional cues, immersing the audience in both the mind of the criminal mastermind and the world around him. Tune In for More Insights For filmmakers and independent filmmakers, this conversation with The Angel offers a masterclass in creating an immersive score that enhances storytelling. From the authenticity of her musical choices to her seamless collaboration with the director, The Angel's work on SupaCrucuail Heist 88 sets a new standard for film music. ============= Submit Your Film to Our Film Collective: ifapfilmcollective.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/aconversationwithfm/support

The era of surprise album releases seems to be over, with everyone from Beyonce to Billie Eilish to Charli XCX to Tyler, The Creator opting for modern (and bombastic) twists on the traditional way of hyping LPs before their release dates. Increasingly, it seems the arena listening party in a key tool in connecting conceptual artist and fans, but as Greg shares on this week's episode, they don't always work. We also get into the week's headlines, including the reformation of The Maccabees, how Lily Allen is making more money from her feet on OnlyFans than through her music on Spotify, and what Helen Mirren wishes Kurt Cobain got to experience. Greg also shows off about the most famous people he's met. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with the incredibly talented Carolyn Kendrick—singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and all-around creative powerhouse. We dive into her musical journey and influences and get the inside scoop on her upcoming album, Each Machine. Carolyn and I chat about how technology and AI are shaping the music industry, the essential role rhythm plays in songwriting, and the unique collaborative spirit of the fiddling community. She also opens up about her creative process, the concept behind her new album, and her experiences at Berklee's American Roots program. This conversation is a deep dive into where traditional meets modern and how community shapes the arts.Carolyn Kendrick is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, fiddler, guitarist, and producer. After many happy years on the road as a side musician, Kendrick has blossomed as a solo artist since issuing her debut EP, Tear Things Apart, in 2020. Heralded as “hauntingly lovely” (Paste Magazine), you won't want to miss a Carolyn Kendrick live performance. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Kendrick crisscrossed the country with her former duo project, The Page Turners. She has shared the stage with beloved artists such as Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, Aoife O'Donovan, Kaia Kater, Hannah Read, Margo Price, The Clements Brothers, and Jacksonport. She has played festivals such as Newport Folk Festival, Greyfox Bluegrass Festival, Savannah Music Festival, and won awards such as the Freshgrass ‘Best Duo' Award, The Fletcher Bright Award, and was the Fall 2023 Composer In Residence at the University of the Pacific. In addition to her songwriting career, Kendrick is active in the Bluegrass and Old-Time fiddle scene and produced and written music for the award-winning podcasts You're Wrong About (Podcast of the Year, iHeart Radio) and You Are Good. Her forthcoming album, Each Machine, is a collection of traditional and original political folk songs inspired by her time researching The Satanic Panic for the history podcast You're Wrong About. These songs are modern, electric re-imaginings of hymns, murder ballads, pagan chanting, and even songs of devil-worship. The first single, The Devil's Nine Questions, is available for pre-order now and will be released October 1st, 2024. The full album, both physical + digital copies, as well as an accompanying zine of behind-the scenes photography and essays, will be released 12.6.24 on High Occulture Records. To learn more about Carolyn, please visit carolynkendrick.com.Thank you for tuning in!
