More than a third of Americans rent instead of own their home, according to the 2022 Census. That number is likely to increase. More than half of Gen Z say renting is a better option than buying a house, and a report from the Wall Street Journal found that more high-income earners are choosing to rent over making the big purchase. As more Americans rent, they face some unique challenges: absent landlords, bait-and-switch apartments, and figuring out whether hanging that heavy mirror on the wall is worth the headache later.Mercury Stardust is a professional home maintenance technician and is known widely as the Trans Handy Ma'am on social media. On TikTok, she helps her 2.5 million followers through all the DIY tasks of rental repairs and to make apartments feel more like homes. If you're not on TikTok, you're in luck. Mercury is out with the new book, "Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair." Want to support 1A? Give to your local public radio station and subscribe to this podcast. Have questions? Today's conversation brings us to the unusual intersection of social media influence, DIY home repair, and trans activism. I'm excited to introduce you to my amazing guest for today's show! Mercury Stardust, the “Trans Handy Ma'am,” is a professional home maintenance technician, burlesque performer, author, and award-winning activist. Mercury credits her TikTok success to her experience teaching burlesque, where she learned to communicate and create a safe space for students who had frequently experienced trauma. She has been featured in stories by NBC, NPR, Buzzfeed, Newsweek, the Washington Post, and Pink News. Her leadership within the trans community has led to collaborations with such brands as I Fix It, Lowe's, and the trans healthcare community Point of Pride. Mercury's recent livestream fundraiser ended up raising over $2.2 million, and she's embarking on a huge book tour this fall to promote her book, Safe & Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair.   Show Highlights:  ●      How Mercury created a safe space with “Gentle DIY” in the male-dominated handyman world ●      How Mercury became a home maintenance technician to supplement her living as a cabaret performer ●      Why Mercury's content caters to apartment renters and others who may not be comfortable with tools and DIY repairs ●      Why Mercury shows up authentically without pretense and perfectionism ●      What it's like to be a prominent trans woman on the internet and still manage her mental health ●      How Mercury handles the task of setting boundaries with people to protect her emotional and mental health ●      Highlights from Mercury's book, Safe & Sound, and her upcoming 52-city book tour ●      How Mercury leans into her weaknesses and insecurities   Resources and Links: Connect with Mercury Stardust: Website, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and Safe & Sound book Connect with KC: Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook Get KC's book, How to Keep House While Drowning We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Welcome back to your favorite podcast of all time, Bubbles' Mushrooms! This week we have our first trifecta, our first turkey, our first hat trick - our number one fan Sam is back again! While Sam is honored to be back on the podcast, she has only had two belly buttons thus far and has not even begun thinking about the third yet. We talk about starting an OnlyFans specifically for belly buttons starring specially customized belly buttons photographed around the world, what OnlyFans subscribers are called (suckers) and starting a Patreon for the stupid show we do with jarred farts for sale, belly button pics, Katie's ugly foot pics and videos of Luke's wee wee being shook around. Mercury Stardust, the Trans-Handy-Ma'am is going to be at a local bookstore in our area soon doing a book signing which is pretty awesome, Katie gives us a front porch update, Jenn and Edward vent about the stupid young people in their neighborhoods and Luke sat in his driveway all weekend long trying to sell other people's garbage. This weeks game and guest are just leftovers, Luke is hosting and so that means that we're doing Name That Tune again! We will be doing another cover band NTT just like the Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies version from several weeks ago. We shouldn't be talking about Dick Cheese, but here we are and we're all about the Legend of the Boat That Sank! Follow us on Instagram @bubbmush and email us at bubbmush@gmail.com - enjoy all of the Eazy-E!

In this episode we speak to Melanie Gnau - a small living expert. Melanie teaches about creating a sustainable and beautiful home through DIY, shopping second hand, gardening and living mindfully. Her blog A Small Life and social media sharing highlight how to make small, but life altering changes to how we live - that can benefit us as individuals, but also the planet as a whole. We also talk about her Isleta Pueblo heritage, how neurodiversity can be a consideration of functional design and even how cleaning can create compelling content. We talk about the different aspects of minimalism - beyond the aesthetic. Melanie also shares how she balances the different aspects of her business and how the personal and political aspects of sustainability can intertwine, creating a meaningful life that benefits ourselves, our community and our planet. We recorded this conversation before the devastating floods in Australia and the invasion of Ukraine. Seeing horrific events like these and knowing that there are other global events receiving less media attention really shines a light on what a privilege it is to have a safe, comfortable home - even though it is a human right, it is not something we can take for granted. We hope that this conversation can both help us all create a functional and nurturing environment within your own home, and enhance our capacity to help others - maybe through volunteering, contributing to grassroots fundraising, political lobbying or making ethical purchasing choices.
