Days after the Supreme Court's Louisiana v. Callais decision, Tennessee became the first state in the country to eliminate a majority-Black congressional district. Memphis was cracked into thirds in just 72 hours, with no hearings, no community input and no requirement to notify voters. State Rep. Justin Pearson breaks down how it happened, what was lost and why he's running for Congress anyway — in the very district they drew to stop him.
We chose to spend our 101st episode celebrating and platforming Sage Hardware! It's not often we get to chat with people who blend diverse genres like metalcore, cybergrind, and vaporwave; and Shortstuf888 pulled someone that made perfect sense to fill the role. We started a few minutes late due to some technical difficulties, but we made sure to make time to cover a series of interesting and important topics, like breakcore, digital hardcore, and what it was like touring with a post-rock-influenced screamo band. Alex regaled us with the story behind BasshouseHTML's mantra "steal from big business", he got to share a geekout moment with Shiro about Justin Pearson's many projects, and Sage also mentioned a pivotal moment getting into producing electronic music thanks to his love of Lil Ugly Mane. During several moments, the trio expressed their love of Angel Marcloid's various projects. Alex mentioned that his father plays bassoon in a quartet that covers video game music; and the squad talked about what he learned about Japanese culture while touring in Japan. We had a lot of fun during our 101st episode, so tap in if you want to hear the skinny on Venetian masks, Maryland, West Virginia, and the subjectivity of art and music! You heard it on "Hot Takes"! Democracy is under attack—and this conversation made clear that the fight for voting rights is entering a dangerous new phase. On Thursday May 14, Lauren Groh-Wargo, CEO of Fair Fight Action (Rights & Insights), and Tennessee State Rep. Justin J. Pearson joined BigTentUSA's urgent discussion on the fallout from “Louisiana v. Callais”. Groh-Wargo and Pearson sounded the alarm on escalating efforts to dismantle fair representation across the South. From racial gerrymandering and attacks on Black voting power to coordinated pushes for partisan redistricting, the speakers warned that extremist lawmakers are testing how far they can weaken democracy—and counting on people to tune out. The conversation highlighted mounting threats in states like Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana, while emphasizing that courts alone will not stop the damage. Instead, organizers urged attendees to focus on turnout, state supreme court races, grassroots organizing, and sustained public pressure.Folks, the time to organize, mobilize, and fight back is now.Speakers' Recommended Actions:* Push back hard against voter suppression, racist gerrymandering, and attacks on democracy by calling them out publicly and keeping the pressure on.* Build bigger, stronger coalitions by bringing together community groups, workers, young people, businesses, and pro-democracy allies.* Reach more voters—including people who feel disconnected from politics—through year-round grassroots organizing and community outreach.* Focus on turnout in the 2026 midterms and key state and local races that will shape voting rights and representation.* Support local organizers and stay involved beyond election season through advocacy, education, and community action.Check out our ACT NOW page:https://bigtentusa.org/act-now/ Learn more about Fair Fight Action here:https://www.fairfight.com/Learn more about Rep. Pearson's campaign here:https://www.votejustinj.com/ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:Lauren Groh-Wargo is a political and civic engagement strategist, executive, and advocate for economic and voting rights. She partnered with Stacey Abrams in 2012 to build Democratic and progressive infrastructure in Georgia, and in response to 2018 voter suppression, founded and serves as CEO of Fair Fight Action, which combats suppression and advances voter education. Fair Fight played a key role in the 2020 election and 2021 Georgia runoff. An organizer at heart, Lauren has led campaigns and advised nonprofits nationally for over 20 years. She holds an Economics degree from American University and lives in Atlanta with her partner and son.Rep. Justin J. Pearson launched his campaign for Tennessee's Ninth Congressional District on October 8, 2025, declaring it “a campaign for The People.” A movement leader and Tennessee lawmaker, he rose to national prominence as part of the Tennessee Three, standing up for gun reform and being overwhelmingly reelected after expulsion. A lifelong organizer, he helped lead the victorious Byhalia Pipeline fight, shut down a cancer-causing sterilization plant, and now challenges Elon Musk's xAI data center. The second-youngest state legislator, Pearson is a national voice for justice, honored with the Truman Center's 2024 Moral Courage Award. He's running to bring that fight to Congress. Pearson is married to his partner in life and the struggle for justice Oceana R. Gilliam-Pearson. This is a public episode. The Atlanta Voice - celebrating sixty years in publication - is guided by editor-in-chief Donnell Suggs, who's made himself available for this show on many occasions, and the Monday before the Georgia primary, it was great to catch up and get a sense where his readership and metro Atlanta's Black voting bloc is leaning on a handful of races. He recently sat down with former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who is of course running for the Democratic nomination to be Georgia's next governor. Donnell and I discuss that race for second place, too. - - - This AL.com op/ed concerns me a bit. John Archibald covered protests in Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, and noted the optics of the fleets of black SUVs and limousines swooping into Selma for quick stops and swoops back out, as well as one woman's reponse: “That's too much,” a lady beside me said. “This should be for the people.”Activists and politicians have to tweak these optics, in my opinion. That said, the likes of Rev. Senator Raphael Warnock, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Tennessee state Rep. Justin Pearson, Senator Cory Booker, did lend voice and wisdom to the moment. I have highlights to share.

You're judging God. "Wives, obey your husbands." Mental health in the black community. Some people want to wake up.
The president said, on camera, that he doesn't think about Americans' financial situations. "Not even a little bit." He said it while inflation hit a three-year high, gas hit $4.50 a gallon, and the war in Iran crossed $29 billion. Then he got on a plane to China. This episode covers all of it.Trump's "I don't think about anybody" quote in full context. FBI Director Kash Patel calling a senator a drunk under oath instead of answering whether he shows up to work sober. Lindsey Graham screaming at Defense Secretary Hegseth because the war he sold is falling apart. Israel publicly lobbying for more strikes while Americans pay $4.50 at the pump. The DOJ threatening to subpoena journalists for reporting the truth. Trump mocking JD Vance as a "little boy" for being evacuated faster during a shooting. Three unexplained dental visits in five months. The Supreme Court letting Alabama gut its court-ordered voting maps mid-election. Tennessee stripping every Black legislator of their committee assignments. A racist streamer terrorizing Nashville. And why the Democratic Party's answer to all of this has been a fundraising email while Zohran Mamdani proved in 131 days that the problems were always solvable. The system is working as designed. Just not for you.Topics covered: Trump Iran quote, inflation, CPI, gas prices, Kash Patel Senate hearing, Chris Van Hollen, Lindsey Graham, Pete Hegseth, Israel Iran deal, Todd Blanche DOJ press subpoenas, First Amendment, Trump JD Vance, Trump health dental visits, Alabama redistricting, Voting Rights Act, Tennessee redistricting, Cameron Sexton, Justin Pearson, Democratic Party establishment, Zohran Mamdani NYC budget, Jeffrey Epstein survivors, Chud the Builder Nashville arrestBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/we-saw-the-devil-unfiltered-political-analysis--4433638/support.Website: http://www.wesawthedevil.comPatreon: http://www.patreon.com/wesawthedevilDiscord: https://discord.gg/X2qYXdB4Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/WeSawtheDevilInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/wesawthedevilpodcast.

- The episode frames the moment as a turning point: people stop being afraid of being called racist, transphobic, or worse, and start openly rejecting the identity rules that shaped politics for years. - Tennessee and Virginia become proof of that shift, with race-based districting taking direct hits and Democrats left arguing that replacing entrenched power with a black Republican is somehow oppression. - Justin Pearson is cast as pure performance, a privilege-soaked activist playing revolutionary while melting down over a map that destroys his path to Congress. - Spencer Pratt keeps gaining traction in Los Angeles by doing the one thing career politicians refuse to do: speak bluntly about fire failures, homeless chaos, union power, and civic collapse. - The broader message is ruthless and simple: the old intimidation tactics are losing their grip, and once the fear breaks, the whole political script starts falling apart. Alabama became the latest state in that fight on Friday when Republicans approved plans for new primary elections pending a court decision on whether those newly drawn GOP House districts can be used in the November midterm elections. Chaotic scenes erupted at the Alabama Statehouse as a protester was dragged from the packed House gallery by security officers. Tensions also ran high in the Tennessee state capitol this week where protesters were removed from hearings over proposed congressional maps that overwhelmingly favored Republicans. The protests did not prevent Republican lawmakers from enacting a new map that abolishes the state's only majority-Black district. Governor Bill Lee signed the new map into law the same day. Tennessee House Representative Justin J. Pearson and Former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones join The Weekend to discuss how Republicans in their respective states are striping away Black voting power. - Tennessee's redistricting fight blows up the Democratic racial narrative, with the old map scrapped, Steve Cohen on the way out, and a black Republican woman now positioned to take the seat. - Justin Pearson turns the Statehouse into political theater, screaming about oppression while acting out a race-first script the episode treats as pure fraud. - Meghan Kelly and Tucker Carlson are hammered again for suggesting concern about radical Islam is somehow driven by Israel, while the episode insists the threat is domestic, immediate, and undeniable. - Spencer Pratt keeps emerging as the raw anti-establishment force in Los Angeles, landing direct hits on Karen Bass over the fires, the cover-ups, and the city's collapse. - Kamala Harris is cast as the perfect Democratic symbol: rich, insulated, and wildly out of touch, declaring the American dream dead while living a life that proves the exact opposite. CannCon and Chris Paul close out the week with a Friday show that delivers one of the biggest election integrity wins of the year. Breaking during the broadcast, the Virginia Supreme Court strikes down the redistricting referendum in a 46-page opinion declaring the process null and void for violating constitutional procedural requirements, vindicating weeks of coverage by CannCon, Ash, and Ghost. Tennessee passes its 9-0 congressional redistricting map as Democrat lawmaker Justin Pearson melts down on the floor. The FBI's investigation of Senate Intelligence Committee Democrats heats up as Kash Patel discovers a buried NSA referral over classified leaks used to smear Tulsi Gabbard during her confirmation. A US trade court issues a narrow block of Trump's 10% global tariffs for two importers, and Trump immediately signals he is pivoting to a third legal authority. Three US Navy destroyers transit the Strait of Hormuz under fire, take out everything with lasers, and Trump calls it a love tap, signaling peace deal progress toward July 4. Wisconsin enters the election investigation queue. The first UFO file batch drops, and Chris Paul delivers a cold-water take on government narrative seeding through evangelical pastors.
