Today's golden goose of a Graventown guest is someone who has been involved in my life in many different iterations. As a kid, I would hear my friend Stu regale tales of a hilarious guy named Sean Cooley, and their adventures around the Kanata/Nepean/Bells Corners corridor with another young wild funny human named Tom Green. Years later in life, when my daughter was on the way, in a small world 'ah-ha' moment, Sean was actually my boss at Beau's All Natural Brewing in Vankleek Hill and was always a kind and welcoming force in my life. Sean has been a lifelong lover of and creative contributor to radio (as the host of epic community radio shows in Ottawa like "The Midnight Caller", "The Breaks" and "Moonrappin"), rap and hip-hop and comedy (inadvertently because he's so funny)  with an avid interest in boxing and animals of all kinds,  and has one of the best logistically sharp minds of anyone I've ever met. Today, he is the Supply Chain Manager at Montebello Packaging. It was rad to connect again with him in Graventown.

In the fourth episode of Lagered Tales our co-founder and CEO at Beau’s, Steve Beauchesne, talks to Ren Navarro, founder of Beer.Diversity about her work addressing the lack of diversity in the Canadian craft beer industry.    In the episode’s second feature, one of our producers, Patrick, sits down with Ottawa-based charitable organization, Operation Come Home’s executive director, Elspeth McKay, and Steve (separately) as they each recount the (exciting) story of having a law changed in Ontario in 2011, in the name of social enterprise!   In our third feature, Eddy Earwigg sits down with Louise Sproule, the editor and publisher of The Review, a local newspaper in Vankleek Hill. They discuss the challenges of being the first female publisher at a small-town paper, how Vankleek Hill has changed since Beau’s arrived, and much more -- expect the unexpected.    Finally, Steve joins the Toronto-based writer and beer expert Crystal Luxmore to discuss her favourite holiday beers.    Lagered Tales is a bi-weekly check-in from your friends at the employee-owned Canadian craft brewery Beau’s. Through interviews, storytelling and exciting regular features, we'll explore the intersecting worlds of craft beer, food, music, community and culture — and we’ll just generally talk to great people doing great things.   Follow us on Instagram and Twitter @beausallnatural, on Facebook @BeausBrewery. Katy (@klwatts) is joined by Chuck Thibert (@varxint) and Dan Beaudoin to chat about Brasserie Étienne Brûlé (@brasserieeb) and what made him make the big move from Toronto to Embrun to brew beer! Show Notes: Just in case you need more information about who Étienne Brûlé is (isn't it nice that you get a history lesson with your beer?). I will admit I have a domain registering addiction and it took all of my will power not to stop the podcast and register those domains. Ecocert is a Canadian organization that certifies organic producers, processors and distributors. It's pretty rigorous; to be certified you have to be audited yearly and there are surprise audits. I think the restaurant that Dan is talking about is Pure Kitchen Ottawa. Dan is putting me through my paces this episode. Biofine Clear is a fining agent that helps clarify beer. Unlike gelatin or isinglass (made of fish bladders), Biofine Clear is vegan friendly. If you are into reading about fining agents and whether its vegan-ness has any affect on taste (spoiler: it doesn't) you can read this interesting exbeeriment. The Windsor is a local tavern in Vankleek Hill. Well known to be a hangout for the Beau's crowd and host to great bands and even better after parties. There website now (kind of) works, although it's mostly a showcase of instagram photos. Dan is referencing /r/TheBrewery and ProBrewer.com. We've talked about Cask Days before on the show. It truly is something that every beer fan has to experience at least once (or yearly). Oh those long German words, so hard to pronounce. Here's more information on how taxation has affected the Japanese beer industry - it's fairly interesting. Watch out! Dan is going to convert all of Embrun to craft beer - and that's great! Be fancy and serve your lambics using a basket! Things I will work on - not saying "really good" as a beer description on the podcast. Show Notes: A little bit early for us, a little bit late for you. The Farm Table series has taken over some of our favourite Beau's seasonals including Night Marzen and Beaver River IPEh. The series is inspired by tradition and brewed to style. What determines "to style" - typically the BJCP Guidelines. Beau's Oktoberfest really does have something for everyone - music, food, beer school, midway, beer sports, skateboarding.. Style Profile: Hopfenweisse. I'll admit I felt a bit weird not doing the bike ride this year. I think I'll return to it next year (even though I'll probably ride alone so I can look at the tractors and cows). How much bigger can Oktoberfest get? April likes licking root cellars. Can we agree - hurray for the introduction of hops in beer? Yup, New Belgium's Gruit tastes like a gruit. Style Profile: Baltic Porter. Bring back Ich Bin Ein Bearliner! You can quote me on this! They do accept leftover tokens at the brewery. Sorry :( I'm a bit late with this podcast.
