Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Interview by Kris PetersAcclaimed musical innovator and six-time Grammy nominee, Steven Wilson, will bring his highly anticipated The Overview Tour to Australia this November. His arrival will follow a massive run of UK, European and American dates and celebrates the release of his eighth solo album, The Overview, out now via Fiction Records.Australian fans can expect a captivating live experience from one of contemporary music's most boundary-pushing, genre bending artists. Accompanied by accomplished and seasoned veterans including Nick Beggs on bass (Mute Gods, Steve Hackett), legendary jazz keyboardist, Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Ray Manzarek), Craig Blundell on drums (Steve Hackett, Frost) and Randy McStine on guitars (Marco Minnemann, The Fringe) this world-class line up will bring the expansive, progressive soundscapes to life in a way that can only be experienced in a live setting. The Overview is a 42-minute conceptual journey inspired by the “overview effect” of astronauts viewing Earth from space, and marks a return to the long-form progressive style Steven Wilson redefined with the iconic Porcupine Tree and his earlier solo work. Featuring two ambitious tracks and immersive spatial audio production, The Overview blends progressive sprawl with cinematic electronics and lush, immersive vibes all wrapped in spatial audio wizardry. It's a bold addition to his repertoire which also includes six Grammy nominations, three consecutive UK Top 5 albums and a string of iconic remixes for artists including, Pink Floyd, The Who, King Crimson and Tears For Fears. The Australian tour promises to be a thrilling and dynamic experience. Expect a set packed with The Overview's mind-bending sprawl, alongside cuts from his acclaimed and peerless career.HEAVY had the pleasure of chatting with Wilson, in an enlightening chat that proves why the man is so highly regarded in the music industry. One of the questions we asked focused on the length of his songs and whether the global shortening of attention spans comes into his thinking when writing."The simple answer is I try not to think about the listener when I mark art," he answered honestly. "That sounds very selfish and self-indulgent, and it is, but I've always believed that artists - if I can pretentiously call myself that - should never be thinking about their audience when they create the art, I think by definition it is a selfish act, and you just hope that people want to go with you on that journey. You hope that people will give you the benefit of the doubt. I have a fairly loyal fan base that listen to everything I do. Even if they moan about it, and they complain it's not what they want they still go with me on that journey (smiles), which I think is something that I've built up over the years, that kind of loyalty. Also, I think there's a sense of providing the alternative. There's always been this notion in pop and rock of alternative music. Providing the alternative to whatever is the mainstream at the moment. The mainstream at the moment, as you suggested, is very immediate, short, synthesized pop music. Usually sung by female solo artists. That seems to be very much the prevalent, mainstream, pop formula. So here I am kind of providing the alternative to that. There are people that want that. There are people who want to engage on a deeper level and are prepared to sit and listen to a longer piece of music. So in that sense I see myself as the alternative to the mainstream, and there's always an audience for that."In the full interview, Steve runs us through his busy schedule, tells us what has changed since his last visit, his backing band and what they bring to the live show, The Overview and how fans responded, the conceptual story it is based on and how it transpired to verse, the balance of writing long compositions in the face of people's shortening attention spans, the musical atmosphere generated in his music and the process of bringing it to life, constructing set lists when so many of his songs are lengthy and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this episode we were lucky enough to catch up with two Kscope artists who both have new music to share with us. Firstly, we hear from Iamthemorning's virtuoso pianist Gleb Kolyadin who is celebrating the release of his solo album Mobula which takes listeners on a journey through cosmic landscapes, where imagination transforms the ordinary. Then our host Billy Reeves chats with Colin Edwin (ex Porcupine Tree) about the upcoming album from his band O.R.k, who have been teasing this release with singles for the last 6 months so it really is a long awaited release! The new album Firehose of Falsehoods marks another chapter in the band's ever-evolving exploration of progressive, alternative, and art rock and captures O.R.k.'s signature mix of spontaneity, intricacy, and supreme musicianship.
John Massaglia is a Central Illinois-based musician and also a long-time fan of Dream Theater, which is celebrating their 40th anniversary as a band in 2025. We hear John's discovery of Dream Theater, several of his favorite tracks and concert memories, along with a discussion on their authorized bootleg series, Mike Portnoy's departure AND return, and even dip our toes into other progressive metal, like Porcupine Tree. Huge thanks to John Massagalia for making his 5th appearance on the podcast to share his stories as a fan of Dream Theater. You can listen to his band The Truth Council on your favorite streaming apps!
We begin 2025 by going back 23 years to discuss our favourite songs of 2002, including emo classics, motivational hardcore, sparkly piano pop, terrifyingly positive psychedelic religious cults, and THE GREATEST GUITAR RIFF OF ALL TIME.We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Christina Aguilera ft Redman, Aqualung, Bright Eyes, Vanessa Carlton, Cousteau, The Delgados, The DIllinger Escape Plan Ft Mike Patton, Down, Frou Frou, Hatebreed, Idlewild, Isis, Jay-Z Ft Big Boi, Killer Mike, & Twista, July Skies, Ben Kweller, Avril Lavigne, Malcolm Middleton, Miss Black America, Nada Surf, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, The Polyphonic Spree, Porcupine Tree, Sonic Youth, theSTART, Sigur Ros, Taking Back Sunday, Tech N9ne, Wilco, and James Yorkston & The AthletesFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/13AsY6By1DI8knbl7TpMFx?si=cd88b8d2738249feFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

The Battle of Epping Forest». Greetings, everyone, and welcome back to the podcast! We've made it to episode 9, and I'm thrilled to have Mr. Randy McStine as my guest today. Randy and I go way back—we've made a lot of music together over the years, and I can confidently say he's one of the most talented musicians I've ever known. It was a real pleasure to sit down and talk with him. Randy's insights into the music industry are fascinating, and his journey is a testament to doing things on his own terms. He describes his path as a “slow burn,” but one that's authentically his. As a solo artist, Randy has released many fantastic recordings that I highly recommend everyone check out. In recent years, he's reached a much broader audience in recent years through his work with Porcupine Tree. His collaboration with Steven Wilson has introduced Randy to fans worldwide, and I'm so happy to see him get the recognition he deserves—he's earned every bit of it. I hope you enjoy our conversation. Thanks for tuning in, and cheers! #nickdvirgilio #randymcstine #soyouwanttobeamusician #podcast #musiclife

When it comes to a difficult-to-define concept like psychedelia in music, it's subjective. It's not all hippies with sitars and lava lamps and bongs…but that's not wrong either. With a little help from author Michael Hicks and his parameters for what makes music psychedelic, we pose the question: “What is Psychedelic Music?” and offer the Radical Research answer. Note I: The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. As ever, if you choose to support us, we are humbled and grateful! patreon.com/RadicalResearchPodcast Note II: Our friend Tom Hailey counts Stupid Dream as his favorite and only truly loved Porcupine Tree album. That's fine. We love it too. But we love many other Porcupine Tree albums. So, when Hunter said “I've gotta be honest with you, I've gone full Tom Hailey, there's really only one Porcupine Tree record that I really love anymore,” it blew Jeff's gaskets. And then it appeared Hunter said that one album was Signify (“and maybe Sky Moves Sideways”). The whole thing became maddening. After listening back to this torrid exchange (starting at the 1:03:25 mark), Hunter wants to clarify: “Stupid Dream is my favorite Porcupine Tree album, and like I said, I like all ‘90s Porcupine Tree.“ He was being oblique in the recording and it all got a bit out of hand. This is the sort of first-world relationship problem that Radical Research can occasionally suffer. And the world keeps turning! Note III: All past Radical Research episodes can be found here, where you can also find Jeff's Peter Steele and Fates Warning books…and more to come soon! This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

As a tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto on the first anniversary of his passing, Caro C talks to Richard Barbieri, Natalie Beridze and Carsten Nicolai, aka Alva Noto, three musicians who were fortunate enough to collaborate with him. Here, they share some insights into his mindset and methodologies. Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:44 - Richard Barbieri09:04 - Natalie Beridze 19:45 - Carsten Nicolai / Alva Noto Ryuichi Sakamoto BiogRyuichi Sakamoto was a multi award-winning keyboardist, songwriter, composer and producer who along with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, became pioneers of the electronic music genre in Honsono's band Yellow Magic Orchestra.Prior to his success with the band, Sakamoto earned a B.A. in music composition and worked as a session musician and producer. Alongside his success with the band, he continued his solo work, releasing solo albums and collaborations, experimenting with various genres and fusing traditional with electronic. This work led to him scoring more than 30 films throughout his career, his most famous being Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and The Last Emperor. In his later career he composed a multimedia opera, sampled a glass building for use in one of his works and traveled to the Arctic to record the sound of melting snow.Richard Barbieri BiogHailing from London, Richard joined the British band Japan in 1975 and saw huge success around the world until they split in 1982. He continued to work with David Sylvian, as well as Sylvian's brother, Steve Jansen on separate projects. He reunited with Sylvian, Jansen and bass player Mick Karn for the Rain Tree Crow project and continued to play with Steve & Mick as part of ‘JBK'. In the early 1990s, the three of them teamed up with Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson as part of No-Man and it was here that Barbieri and Wilson would begin their long musical association. Porcupine Tree had initially been a Wilson solo project but he recruited Richard in 1993 and over the next 17 years, became one of the shining lights of the neo-prog / pop scene, embracing a more heavy style as the years went on. Reuniting in 2021, they released the first Porcupine Tree album in 12 years with 2022's ‘Closure/ Continuation', a critically acclaimed return to form. Richard has a large body of solo work which he started to release in 2005 and still does to this day.http://www.richardbarbieri.co.uk/Natalie Beridze BiogNatalie Beridze is a Georgian music composer and songwriter. Since 2003 Natalie has been performing live concerts worldwide, and has been known as the first female electronic music artist from Georgia. From 2002-2008 she lived in Cologne and produced music under the artist name TBA. She's released music in Europe on Max.E, Monika Enterprise, CMYK, Laboratory Instinct, CES Records DADO records, Apollo Records Chainmusic, CES Records and ROOM40.In addition to her solo projects, Beridze has collaborated with artists such as Thomas Brinkmann, AGF (Antye Greie), Gudrun Gut, Joerg Follert, Marcus Schmickler, Nika Machaidze aka Nikakoi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gacha Bakradze, Alex Kordzaia, Annika Henderson, Antye Greie-Fuchs, Barbara Morgenstern, Beate Bartel, Danielle De Picciotto, Gudrun Bredemann, Lucrecia Dalt, Merja Kokkonen, Mommo G, Natalie Beridze, Pilocka Krach, Sonae. Beridze's music is part of Adam Curtis's recent BBC Documentary series “Can't get you out of my head”. She also creates works for piano, orchestra and choir, which have been performed by a number of artists and the Tbilisi state opera orchestra. Her recent compositions for piano, keyboard, soprano and tape are part of the ongoing program of Zurich based KioskEnsemble.Beridze, alongside Nika Machaidze teaches songwriting and music production at CES (creative education studio).https://natalieberidzetba.bandcamp.com/Carsten Nicolai / Alva Noto BiogUnder the pseudonym Alva Noto, Carsten Nicolai is one of the best-known representatives of contemporary electronic music. Concerts have taken him to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Tate Modern in London. His various musical projects include collaborations with Ryōji Ikeda, Mika Vainio, Iggy Pop, Blixa Bargeld and Ryūichi Sakamoto. With the latter, Nicolai composed the score for Alejandro González Iñárritu's Oscar-winning film The Revenant, which was nominated for a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Critics Choice Award and a Grammy.https://alvanoto.com/Caro C BiogCaro C is an artist, engineer and teacher specialising in electronic music. Her self-produced fourth album 'Electric Mountain' is out now. Described as a "one-woman electronic avalanche" (BBC), Caro started making music thanks to being laid up whilst living in a double decker bus and listening to the likes of Warp Records in the late 1990's. This 'sonic enchantress' (BBC Radio 3) has now played in most of the cultural hotspots of her current hometown of Manchester, UK. Caro is also the instigator and project manager of electronic music charity Delia Derbyshire Day.URL: http://carocsound.com/Twitter: @carocsoundInst: @carocsoundFB: https://www.facebook.com/carocsound/

Bonus Episode – Ranking the Albums from Episode 139 Through 146 Everyone knows that we here at the Palaver love to rank things. It seemed obvious then to rank the albums in our most recent “Less Old” segment. How does one compare recent releases from the likes of Yes and Marillion to those from Tears For Fears and Porcupine Tree? Where does King's X fit into the conversation? We think this ranking episode is surprising in several ways with some pretty different opinions about records in some areas and almost unanimity on others. We hope you enjoy this lighthearted walk through this collection of releases. Welcome to this preview of the February shows and here is a short feature with award-winning guitarist and composer Jane Getter who releases her new album "Division World" this month. The full feature will follow in the next edition of the podcast. Led by guitarist, composer and singer Jane Getter, the album follows on from her acclaimed ‘Anomalia' album and features Jane's all-star band including keyboardist Adam Holzman, guitarist Alex Skolnick, bassist and singer Paul Frazier and drummer Gene Lake. Randy McStine (McStine & Minnemann, Porcupine Tree) also guests on vocals. Jane's band has carved out a niche at the intersection of rock, jazz, singer-songwriter, and metal styles with her masterful playing and complex and dynamic compositions and has dazzled audiences internationally. Packed with inspired songwriting and blazing instrumentals, ‘Division World' is the strongest album yet from Jane Getter Premonition. Jane says: "This album is a bit more song oriented than my previous work. The songs were written during the pandemic and the lyrics in a lot of the songs are reflections of the divisiveness and divisions happening in the world today. My regular band is featured - keyboardist Adam Holzman, guitarist Alex Skolnick, bassist and singer Paul Frazier and drummer Gene Lake. Randy McStine also guests on vocals. I feel Division World may be JGP's strongest album yet!" "Jane Getter's new album Division World is something quite notable in the multiplicity of genres & sub genres focused on progressive rock fusion guitar, modern jazz rock -contextual songs which do not shy away from a world of trouble as it's context for her outstanding, fiery, & nuanced guitar playing - sung in her courageous, melodic, distinctive voice” - Vernon Reid. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classic-rock-news/message

SCS29 – Porcupine Tree, Philadelphia & Dallas, September 2022 The group relives some of the highlights of seeing Porcupine Tree on the Closure/Continuation tour in the fall of 2022. Ken saw the show in Philly and Joe saw it in Dallas. The C/C tour was a sheer powerhouse of sound and sight. Excellent stage production and the addition of Randy McStine really pushed these shows over the top. The Palaver stands in awe of Porcupine Tree and this tour. Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo and Popdose writer Keith Creighton are inching closer to the end of the year with the November New Music Report. This episode is jam-packed with some stellar music recommendations just in time for the holidays. Segment One: The Big Album It's Prince! Known at various times as The Purple One, Christopher, His Royal Badness, The Artist, or Jamie Starr, Prince was at the top of his game between 1980 and 1987 with an impressive music output that few in the music world could match. Why? Because of The Vault. A prolific writer, Prince vaulted roughly 8,000 songs. In 1991, after a series of lackluster albums, Prince released “Diamonds and Pearls” with his new backing band, the New Power Generation. The result was his fifth (and final) #1 hit in the US with “Cream,” a #3 hit with the title track, and two top 20 hits with “Gett Off” and Money Don't Matter 2 Night.” Overall, “Diamonds and Pearls” was an absolute commercial success for Prince. On October 27, 2023, Sony released a super deluxe version with three CDs of vaulted tracks, a double live album, a remaster of the original record, and a disc with singles and different mixes. That's a lot of music, and Ted and Keith break it all down into digestible bits to highlight what's brilliant about the super deluxe edition, what's good, and what misses the mark. Segment Two: New Music Releases The Transcanada Highwaymen's “Explosive Hits Vol #1 is mostly a carefully curated album of cover songs popular in the 1970s. These are Mellow and Radio Gold songs sung by a supergroup consisting of Moe Berry from The Pursuit of Happiness, Chris Murphy from Sloan, Craig Morthey from Odds, and Steven Page formerly of the Barenaked Ladies, but has gone on to a fantastic solo career. Featured songs include their cover of Andy Kim's “Rock Me Gently, and “Which Way You Goin' Billy” by The Poppy Family. Samples of both songs are embedded in this episode. Lol Tolhurst (former drummer from The Cure), Budgie (from Siouxsie & The Banshees), and producer Jackknife Lee have created a cinematic mindscrew of an album entitled “Los Angles.” Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark are back with what will likely be the final album of their career, and boy what a way to go out! Nowhere on the record are songs that sound like their biggest US hit, “If You Leave.” Rather, as Keith says, this is a soundtrack for the end of the world. Ted compares “Bauhaus Staircase” to Tears for Fears' “The Tipping Point” for its strength, its familiarity at times, and the satisfying way it's all put together. Duran Duran is back with Dance Macabre, a Halloween-theme mashup of covers, updated obscure deep cuts, and some originals. Also, guitarist Andy Taylor returns to the group, and so does the drummer of 17 years with the band, Warren Cuccrullo. If you want to go on a journey with a musician who is a bit of an acquired taste, give Christian Kjellvander a try. “Hold Your Love Still” may not be for everyone, but once you become familiar with Kjellvander's voice, you'll find this record mesmerizing — as you will hear. Nat Jay's latest EP, “Turns Out It's Not The End” is one of Keith's favorites this year. Comparing her to an outlier star to Taylor Swift's galaxy-consuming supernova, Jay's song “Something More” could have been included in the new Hunger Games soundtrack — and you'll be able to hear why. Shplang! has been on the music scene for almost three decades, and is part of the International Pop Overthrow scene. Their latest song, “Understood” is featured in this episode. Segment Three: Stream It Before You Buy It Quick hit recommendations. "Pretty Vicious" by The Struts “Telephone Line” by Juliana Hatfield “New Blue Sun” by Andre 3000 “Revisions of Truth” by One Square Mile “Chronicles of a Diamond” by Black Pumas “Can't Find The Brakes” by Dirty Honey “Purple Rain” by Dolly Parton “Harridan” (Live) by Porcupine Tree

Episode 144 – Porcupine Tree Part 1, Closure/Continuation Despite the Palaver's general love affair with Steven Wilson, we have never officially covered a Porcupine Tree album. This segment on (relatively) newer records opens the door for us to correct that. Closure/Continuation is a monumental album from a talented group of musicians that manifest music that is greater than the sum of their parts. To cut to the chase, we find C/C to be a great album. This episode is related (in a way) to SCS29, which occurred when we saw Porcupine Tree live before we recorded this.
