At their last two meetings, Spartanburg City Council took a pair of actions to move discussions of Morgan Square's future forward, and then voting to continue to keep W Main Street along the square closed to traffic for the next 24 months while the committee undertakes its work. The committee comprises a diverse selection of city residents and stakeholders including downtown restaurant and retail business owners, City planning board members, experts in local development and architecture, and community activists. In presenting the recommended list of committee members to Council, City Manager Chris Story said that in addition to a diversity of experience and background, the committee also includes a diversity of opinions about what should come next for Spartanburg's most prominent piece of public land. The decision to close W Main Street to traffic was first made in spring of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic drastically curtailed shopping and dining in Downtown Spartanburg, in an effort to encourage visitors to return and enjoy safer outdoor dining options. The pedestrian-only space proved popular, with pedestrian counter data showing an increase in the number of visitors after most pandemic restrictions were lifted, with 13.1 percent more visits to Downtown Spartanburg coming during May and June of 2021 than during the same time period in 2019. A also showed that of 3,444 respondents, 55.24% favor keeping W Main Street closed to vehicle traffic indefinitely for expanded pedestrian use, 24.28% favor keeping W Main Street closed to vehicle traffic in front of the square on weekends (Friday-Sunday) for expanded pedestrian use and open to vehicle traffic on weekdays (Monday-Thursday), and 18.25% favor opening W Main Street in front of the square to vehicle traffic. After receiving data and feedback demonstrating the fully pedestrianized space's positive effect on downtown visits, Council voted to keep the area closed to vehicles while staff crafted a process to examine potential permanent changes to Morgan Square to make the space more pedestrian-friendly. Now the Morgan Square Redevelopment Committee will work with design professionals and the public to make recommendations to City Council regarding those changes.

Local favorite Little River Roasting has announced plans for a second downtown location to be housed inside the historic Montgomery Building once renovations are completed in October 2018. The new storefront will join their original downtown location at 188 W Main Street, which opened its doors in 2010 and a drive-thru location on E Main Street. The move comes on the heels of a pair of other downtown coffee shop announcements in 2017, with Greenville-based Spill the Beans announcing a location inside the historic Aug W. Smith building, currently being restored, and Starbucks announcing a new storefront on W Main. Today on the Podcast, we're talking with Daniel Hagerman and Tyler Gibbs of Little River about the planned expansion, and we take stock of both the local coffee scene and the downtown culture that's grown up in Spartanburg since Little River's opening seven years ago.
Yet another downtown construction project is ready to get underway after the City's Design Review Board voted 3-0 to approve plans for a five-story mixed-use development for the corner of W Main Street and Daniel Morgan Avenue. The building will bring 30 new apartment units as well as 3,000 square feet of ground floor retail space to the prominent downtown corner. A development agreement for the building was , providing the city-owned property at no cost to local developer Royce Camp, after which the Design Review Board raised concerns about some aspects of the building's design at their meeting in March. Working together, the City Staff and the developer were able to address issues raised by the DRB, clearing the way for this week's approval. Today on the podcast, we're taking a deeper look at the development, the process of approving this important project, as well as what it could mean for the future of downtown's western end.
As a dedicated City Podcast listener, you've likely already heard that at their meeting earlier this week. We've already discussed one of those projects, a five-story mixed-use development featuring 30 apartment units and 3,000 square feet of ground floor retail space to be built on the corner of W Main Street and Daniel Morgan Avenue, on a podcast earlier this week. You should , because that development is going to be very cool, and you'll be cooler for knowing more about it. Today, we're talking about the other portion of the Downtown Spartanburg development two-fer: a new office building, at least three stories tall, with at least 50,000 square feet of space to accommodate 250 professional office workers. Spartanburg Marriott owners, Jimmy Gibbs and Andrew Cajka plan to build the new office development on a parcel behind the hotel. Today on the podcast, we're discussing details of this great new development. What will it, and the new downtown workers the development brings with it, mean for Spartanburg? How will further development in that portion of downtown, an area that has seen recent business growth with the opening of Hub City Tap House and the nearly completed Hub City Co-op, affect the need for greater connectivity between the downtown core and other areas?
If you've tried to get an apartment in Downtown Spartanburg recently, you've probably encountered some trouble finding a place. In fact, in our last survey, around 98 percent of all our downtown residential units were filled. However you look at it, there seems to be more than a little pent up demand for new downtown living options in Spartanburg. The good news? More units are on the way. On Monday, City Council approved an agreement for a five-story new mixed-use development to be built on the corner of W Main Street and Daniel Morgan Avenue. The development promises 30 new apartment units (a near 10 percent increase for downtown) as well as 3,000 square feet of ground floor retail space. The property is currently used for surface parking, and to offset the loss of its 14 public spaces, the on the corner of Broad and Spring streets, demolish two aging buildings to accommodate 65 new spaces. Today on the podcast we're taking a look at this fantastic new development and what it means for growth on downtown's western end.
A lot has changed since moved their brewery to its then-new location inside the old Salvation Army building on the corner of W Main Street and Daniel Morgan Avenue in 2009. Not that long ago, watery macrobrews filled seemingly every tap in Downtown Spartanburg, but today the options for those thirsting for something a bit more flavorful have never been more abundant, and with our city's long-overdue second craft brewer, Hub City Tap House opening their doors last month, options for beer brewed right here in Downtown Spartanburg are growing too. Any way you choose to look at it, the local craft beer scene is definitely on the rise, and this Saturday, 1-5 p.m., another first will be added to the mix as brings 25 brewers from all over the Carolinas to Downtown Spartanburg's first craft beer festival. In addition to all those tasty beverage options, the festival features a great local live music lineup and food from great local restaurants like Willy Taco and Venus Pie. Today on the podcast, we're talking with festival organizers Wilton Jordan and Lamar Baehr, and RJ Rockers' Mark Johnsen. Listen below to learn more, and .
