This week on P&L, I'm joined by Chad Huffhines, a prolific Jersey Mike's franchisee who has mastered the art of rapid scaling. This episode dives into Chad's transition from the corporate world at Chipotle to building a sandwich empire that grew from a single store in 2010 to 37 locations today. Chad shares his unique perspective on the "economy of scale," explaining why growth actually becomes easier once you move past the initial "wall" of six stores and how a deep pool of internal talent is a business's greatest asset. We also discuss the non-negotiable hierarchy that governs his life - God, family, and then work - and how he is currently navigating the transition of bringing his son into the business as a 50/50 partner. Tune in this week on P&L to learn how to scale a high-volume operation without losing sight of the values that started it all. Reach out to Chad at chadehuffhines@gmail.com "Put God first, put your family next, and then this job comes third... you have to have this job to take care of your family, but don't forget God's right there too." - Chad Huffhines This week on Priorities & Lifestyle: The Leap from Corporate to Entrepreneurship: Transitioning from the "honeymoon" phase of a growing brand to owning the risk yourself. Breaking Through the Scaling "Wall": Why the jump from six to nine stores is the hardest period and how to survive it. The Power of Internal Promotion: Building a leadership team from the ground up - from 16-year-old crew members to professional area managers. Structuring the Family Buyout: Navigating 50/50 partnerships with the next generation and securing financing for legacy stores. Our Favorite Quotes: "Growth creates opportunity... it allows the general manager to give an opportunity to the next person." - Chad Huffhines "If you're not growing, you're dying. There's none of this middle ground." - Rob Schulz "I take my weaknesses and find somebody who is good at them... you take your leg up and give it to somebody on your team." - Chad Huffhines About Rob Schulz and P&L Priorities & LIfestyle Podcast The P&L: Priorities & Lifestyle Podcast is a show for business owners. Chris Malleo is a former Northwestern University and professional football player. After retiring from paying, he became head coach at The Peddie School in New Jersey, and led a perennial underachieving team to a #1 national ranking through a system of culture, belief, and standards. While at Peddie, Chris hired an incredible coach named Frankie Kineavy. Frankie was non verbal, and had suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, yet soon Chris, his staff and his players realized that while Frankie was not your typical football coach, he was one of the best leaders any of them had ever met. Chris tells that story in his new book The ChairLeader, a best selling book on leadership, connection, and courage, featuring a foreword by Hall of Fame coach Jay Wright and endorsements from bestselling author Jon Gordon, Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney, and Jersey Mike's Founder and CEO Peter Cancro. In our discussion, John and Chris discuss his journey to becoming a coach, the incredible impact Frankie had on the Peddie program, and the leadership lessons that he retells in his book. Keep winning! Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Keith Milner. Purpose of the Interview The interview aims to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs by sharing Keith Milner’s journey from corporate America to entrepreneurship. It emphasizes discipline, leadership, risk-taking, and strategies for building generational wealth, particularly for underrepresented communities. Key Takeaways Foundational Lessons from Childhood Growing up in a disciplined, hardworking family taught Keith accountability, integrity, and the principle of choices and consequences. Education was highly valued in his household, shaping his drive for success. Corporate vs. Entrepreneurial Mindset Corporate careers can feel secure but are often riskier because you lack control over your destiny. Entrepreneurship offers greater control and potential for generational wealth. Leadership and Teamwork Lessons from sports—teamwork, discipline, and leadership—translate directly into business success. Establishing a common goal and coaching employees is crucial, but underperformers must eventually be let go. Risk and Value Many African-Americans view entrepreneurship as risky, but Keith argues it’s less risky than employment in an at-will state. Success depends on creating value that customers are willing to pay for. Franchising Journey Relationships opened doors to Jersey Mike’s franchise ownership. On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including expert predictions for 2026, Chipotle's negative year, and the ongoing value wars. First up is 2026 predictions, specifically as it relates to the economy; Sam and Alicia both traveled to Florida last week for separate conferences where they heard more about 2026 expectations. The short version? It doesn't look great — but maybe it won't get worse? They break down the economic factors impacting restaurants and how operators can protect their businesses from yet another down year. Next up are Alicia's insights from the ICR event in Orlando, where she spoke with two brands who were looking to buck the trend in 2026: Jersey Mike's and TGI Friday's. She shares exclusive thoughts from her conversations and how exactly these two brands — which have been on different trajectories the past few years — plan to grow. Then Sam and Alicia discuss Chipotle, which announced that it expected 2025 to be its first-ever negative sales year on record. Could CEO Scott Boatwright be on the hot seat? The sudden departure of chief brand officer Chris Brandt suggests the company is ready to shake things up to get back to growth. Sam and Alicia explore what this could mean for Chipotle. Finally, in the extra serving portion of the episode, senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn joins to discuss recent value offerings from around the restaurant industry, including major evolution at Taco Bell and Wendy's. He then shares a conversation he recently had with Chickie's & Pete's head chef Brendan Mullan.
