Fluoride has been in the news recently with some people questioning the worth of adding this vital mineral to the water supplies in the United States.  Fluoride repairs and prevents damage to teeth caused by bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria in the mouth produce acid when a person eats or drinks. The acid dissolves minerals in a tooth's surface, making the tooth weaker and open to cavities.1 Fluoride replaces the minerals lost from a tooth due to acid breakdown. Some fluoride can replace minerals in the tooth surface, making the outer enamel layer harder to dissolve. Fluoride also may reduce the amount of acid that cavity-causing bacteria produce, as well as making it harder for these bacteria to stick to the teeth.1 Protecting teeth requires consistent, low levels of fluoride in the mouth (in the saliva and on tooth surfaces). Fluoride can also be incorporated into developing dental enamel before a tooth erupts into the mouth, enhancing the tooth's resistance to acid breakdown and preventing cavities later in life. (credits) Some public figures have made false claims that adding fluoride to drinking water poses health risks, such as reduced intelligence in children and cancer. When used at recommended levels, fluoride in drinking water is safe and effective for preventing tooth decay, which also provides benefits for people's overall health. Extensive research has consistently demonstrated that optimal fluoridation does not pose a detectable risk of cancer or other serious health issues.  (credits) The discovery of Fluoride as a preventative for tooth decay.

**Discussion begins at 6:00**In 1901, Frederick McKay was a dentist who opened a practice in Colorado Springs and found that his patients all seemed to have stained/mottled teeth, but no cavities.  Why was this?  He determined, after nearly 30 years and with the help of other researchers, that they all had what is now called fluorosis – and it was the result of high levels of fluoride in the Colorado Springs drinking water.  He reported his findings to the dental community, and people started comparing fluoride levels and dental hygiene in various geographical areas. In the 1930s, a dentist with the US Public Health Service, sought to determine how high the level of fluoride in the water could be before it caused mottling, in hopes they could remove fluoride from water sources where there were higher levels.  During his study, he learned that low doses had a protective effect.  It was reported that when natural fluoride concentration was greater than 1 part per million, the incidence of cavities was seen to be reduced by some 50-65% and the World Health Organization began to recommend supplemental fluoride where levels were low.In the 1940s and 50s, there was a push to fluoridate water in the US and Canada, reportedly in an attempt to improve dental health.  This practice was immediately divisive, and remains that way today.  Today, the American Dental Association remains a strong advocate of adding fluoride to water and estimates that every dollar spent on fluoridation saves about fifty dollars in future dental expenses.  Nonetheless, for the last7 0 years there have been people who felt that the government had and continues to have a more nefarious goal… Was this all a communist plot to undermine American health or control the population?  Other critics note similarities between MK Ultra studies and fluoridating water.   The potential goal of mind control was even referenced in the 1964 political satire Dr Strangelove – in which one of the characters, General Jack D. Ripper believes that fluoridation of public water supplies is a Communist conspiracy designed to weaken American willpower. He sees it as a sinister plot to destroy "our precious bodily fluids".  Was this all a conspiracy to cover up and get rid of fluoride, an industrial waste product of fertilizer?  Finally, there are those who believe that water fluoridation is an infringement of individual rights - similar to mass medication or vaccination without consent.  Additional concerns surround the potential negative health effects including bone cancer, thyroid issues, and cognitive deficits in children – but what is the truth?    Is fluoride in our water a cheap and effective way to improve dental health?  Or is there something more sinister at play?Send us a textSupport the showTheme song by INDA

Utah dentists prepare for the first statewide fluoride ban

With Utah's first-in-the-nation ban on fluoride in public drinking water having taken effect May 7, dentists who treat children and low-income patients said they're bracing for an influx of tooth decay among the state's most vulnerable. Republican Gov. Spencer Cox signed the law against the recommendation of many dentists and national health organizations who warned removing fluoride would harm tooth development, especially in young patients without regular access to dental care. U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. applauded Utah for being the first state to enact a ban and said he plans to direct the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stop recommending fluoridation nationwide. As of May 7, communities across the state were no longer able to decide whether to add a low dose of the cavity-preventing mineral to their water supply. Before the ban became law, a majority of Utah water systems did not add fluoride. The state in 2022 ranked 44th in the nation for the percentage of residents who received fluoridated water, with about two in five receiving it, according to CDC data. The law impacts about 1.6 million Utah residents who live in Davis and Salt Lake counties, and Brigham City, according to the Utah Department of Health and Human Services. In communities like Salt Lake City—the largest city removing fluoride from its water supply—dentists over the past weeks said many patients were unaware of the fast-approaching ban, and most did not realize the city had been adding fluoride to their drinking water for nearly two decades. Fluoride fortifies teeth and reduces cavities by replacing minerals lost during normal wear and tear, according to the CDC. It's especially important for children whose teeth are still developing. For some low-income families, public drinking water containing fluoride may be their only source of preventative dental care. At Salt Lake Donated Dental Services, providers expect their monthslong waitlist for children's procedures requiring sedation to grow and their need for volunteer dentists to skyrocket. The effects of the ban on children's teeth will likely be visible within the next year, said Sasha Harvey, the clinic's executive director. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Dr. David Sutton is the founder and lead dentist at Dapper Dental, a modern dental practice in Winter Park. Born and raised in Coral Springs, Dr. Sutton became the first doctor in his family, driven by a desire to make a tangible impact on people's lives. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in 2008 and went on to complete his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) at Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Sutton is a friend of the site and the official dentist of Bungalower Media, so we invited him to come chat about the recent move by the governor's office to remove fluoride from drinking water, because he sees it as a form of "forced medication." Fluoride was added to Florida's drinking water as part of a public health initiative to prevent tooth decay. Beginning in the mid-20th century, scientific studies showed that communities with naturally occurring fluoride in their water had significantly lower rates of dental cavities. In response, Florida—like many other states—began adding fluoride to municipal water supplies to improve oral health, particularly in children. The decision was based on recommendations from health authorities like the U.S. Public Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which have long supported water fluoridation as a safe, effective, and cost-efficient way to reduce dental disease across populations.
