(Fremont County, WY)- Hey there, fellow adventurers! Charene here, the Adventure Queen, and let me tell you, even queens have their moments of uncertainty. So picture this: I'm out in the wild, soaking in the breathtaking beauty of Wyoming's wilderness during fall fishing escapades. But then it hits me – am I truly prepared to handle the wild's most majestic yet potentially dangerous residents, the bears? I know having bear spray is something I don't go into the wild without, but let's be real, I wouldn't know the first thing about deploying it effectively if my fly rods depended on it. Cue my saving grace: Rene Schell with Wyoming Game and Fish. Archery season and fall fishing are incredible times to be out and about, but they also heighten the chances of bear encounters. You see, as the temperature dips, these magnificent creatures gear up for hibernation, which can make them a bit more… let's say, unpredictable. Rene sheds light on the nitty-gritty of bear behavior during this time. But let's get back to my bear spray dilemma – turns out I'm not the only one who's been a bit clueless about this. Rene's tips on bear spray usage are worth the reminder and listen. From how to properly store and carry it, to the right way of holding and spraying the darn thing, she covers it all. And, my fellow adventurers, bear spray isn't just some accessory to dangle on your belt like a shiny trinket; it's a powerful tool that can keep us safe and respect the wild animals we so admire. So, if you're anything like me and need a crash course in bear safety, dive into the wealth of information Rene and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department offer at wgfd.wyo.gov. (Riverton, WY) - Fremont County Fair 2023 is in the review mirror but amidst the anticipation and preparations with the fair a certain young participant named Devyn found herself facing an unexpected turn of events. Devyn was not able to sell her pig "Little Chunkers" this year. This would have been the pinnacle of her dedicated efforts that she has put in with her pig. The situation has led her to seek a helping hand in a venture that embodies the culmination of her hard work and dedication. I actually met Devyn before fair and she was especially excited to show off her prize pig. Can we help this young lady out? In this interview I ask Devyn a bit more about herself, she is 12 years old going into 7th grade. We find out about her love of animals and find out about this delicious pig that needs a freezer home! This young lady needs our help. Devyn gives us the dirty on the pigs, they are actually really sweet animals, that she works hard with and enjoys spending time with. Another part of showing and selling your animal at the fair is the "add-ons" which are just small donations people give to help out the kids. If you would like to make a donation or potentially buy Lil' Chunkers then call or text 307-851-1485 which is Cathy Fillin, Devyn's mother. Generous donations have become the cornerstone of uplifting 4-H kids like Devyn, enabling them to transform setbacks into success stories. (Lander, WY) - A familiar face of the Lander community returned to Lander Valley High School (LVHS) to provide a two-day camp for young athletes. Bryan Beaver St. Clair, who was part of the Lander Valley Tigers 2019 state championship team and also a part of the College of Idaho's recent championship, hosted the camp. "First getting that experience is crazy. It was a crazy experience. It's something only a certain amount of people feel and never feel something like that," St. Clair said. "Being able to have that knowledge of being able to get to that kind of scenario, getting to winning a championship is exactly why I want to come here and spread to these kids." St. Clair has always appreciated community support and how they show it with former athletes of LVHS. "The community is very supportive. We have kids from all around like, like Johnny Kulow, who's over at ASU doing crazy things for them. We have, you know, Maddie Chance over at the University of Wyoming for the soccer team over there doing great things," he said. "So I'm very happy that I'm back; there's a lot of kids here showing up and supporting me as I put this camp on. I think that's a great thing." At the camp, participants went through many drills to hone their skills. "We would introduce everything and for like today for high school and stuff. We do a little more complex things than we do middle school. But it was basically the same thing. We warmed up, then we did ball handling, we did some finishing drills, working on moves and everything, then shooting, and then defense and kind of passing like a little bit of everything." At the end of the camp, a message was shared about consistency. "The advice I gave was, you know, stay consistent. If you want to get good at anything: school, basketball, swimming, with golf, whatever sport you're doing, you got to be consistent with it. You got to do it every day. You got to do something for it, you know." He added some advice from his cousin, who is a college player also, about work ethic. "My cousin Jaden Jane Ferris, who's playing at Rocky Mountain, she gave pretty good advice saying work ethic that goes hand in hand with consistency." You can listen to the full interview below!

Coffee Time: Wyoming Game & Fish provides updates on recent bear sightings, shares tips on how to prevent unwanted bear encounters

(Lander, WY) – The KOVE 1330 AM / 107.7 FM Today in the 10 interview series Coffee Time continued today with host Vince Tropea, who recently spoke with Renee Schell and Brian DeBolt from Wyoming Game and Fish. Schell is the Information and Education Specialist, while DeBolt is the Large Carnivore Conflict Coordinator. Both stopped by to discuss the recent black bear sightings in the Lander area, the ensuing investigation into those sightings, and some tips and reminders for folks who want to avoid unwanted bear encounters. (You can view footage of one of the bear sightings here.) According to DeBolt, there were a few sightings reported before the one on July 13, but at the time those were just sightings, and not "nuisance or conflict behavior." Those reports were also spread so geographically far that there wasn't any indication of it being the same bear. Upon receiving the July 13 report, DeBolt then went door to door in the area and learned that there were multiple (approximately 30) unreported moments of such behavior that led to many "food rewards" for the bear. It was then later discovered that it was indeed the same bear looking for those food rewards in that geographic spread. Unfortunately, when bears and other large animals develop these behaviors for food rewards, relocation becomes more difficult, DeBolt explained, and in this case the bear was indeed euthanized. "As rare as it is for black bears to become aggressive toward people, it was this exact bear behavior that he was exhibiting that the next step is injuring or killing somebody," he later added. "We don't want it to get that point." DeBolt went on to say that while it is totally understandable for citizens to not want to report bear sightings for fear of a fatal outcome for the animal, not reporting early can lead to more aggressive behavior when the those food rewards become more difficult for the bear. Schell added that the more a bear has to work for its food, the less likely it is to return to that food source, and she also stressed that reporting bear and other large animal sightings immediately gives Game and Fish "the most management flexibility," namely, successful relocation. "Game and Fish wants all wild bears to live out their life as wild bears," Schell said. Preventing bear presence in the first place is also another way of mitigating these types of extreme outcomes, Schell and DeBolt went on to explain, and there are a number of ways residents can help in that regard. Below are some examples of proper storage techniques for trash and any potential local honey producers, such as enclosed bins and electric fences. h/t Wyoming Game and Fish h/t Wyoming Game and Fish h/t Wyoming Game and Fish h/t Wyoming Game and Fish h/t Wyoming Game and Fish Schell also reminded folks that there is an animal feeding ban ordinance within city limits, which includes the intentional and unintentional feeding of wildlife (other than birds), and proper feeding/storing techniques can help prevent larger animals from becoming "food conditioned." "We're not out to chastise, punish or publicly humiliate somebody that just accidently got into their stuff," DeBolt added. "Our intent is to prevent the bear from getting food rewards and becoming food conditioned (and to) keep people safe." To report sightings, call (307) 332-2688 for the Lander office, or the 24/7 emergency dispatch line at (877)-943-3847. Click here for a list of Game and Fish contact info.
