Mary here. Today I am writing the show notes myself, in the 1st person, because this week's subject is VERY personal. You might want to sit down. While it's no secret that I don't have children, it is a secret to most that (deep breath) I never WANTED to have children. As I typed that sentence, in my head I could hear an audible gasp many women will have when they read it. Why, because I've heard it so many times in person, when I made that confession.Today I am sharing MY story of how, even as a young girl I never had the motherly instinct and how when I got into my adult and childbearing years, the things other women said to me when I made the same statement. While it wasn't common to ADMIT it back then, there is a fair number of GenX women like me, who decided that having children wasn't for them either.I'd like to take a deeper dive into this subject in the coming weeks. If you (or someone you know) is a GenX woman who decided having children wasn't for you, I'd like to chat with you. I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with this...maybe a round table discussion via Zoom where others can use the audio for their podcasts (if you have one). Maybe a montage of interviews for a show or two. Or maybe...:???Hit me up by heading over to ShesTotallyAwesome.com/contact and send me a message. Totally Awesome Aging

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2020 17:28

What is totally awesome aging???From the beginning of Aging Youthful, it felt like it had an identity crisis. I had a hard time wrapping my brain around it., like something was missing...so I can understand why others did too. Business coaches tell you to find your niche, identify your avatar, etc. etc. I know who I was speaking to, but she didn't know it because she didn't know WHAT Aging Youthful was. Last year I wrote the workbook Aging Youthful in Menopause and Beyond. While the lessons in the book are life changing, I had added menopause to the title with the hopes of my avatar finding it. Well, she still didn't. Last week while on a walk, I had a lightening bolt "download" while I was asking myself, "who AM I speaking to"? Well, the business coaches tell you, your avatar is actually "you, just 1-2 steps back". I thought to myself "who AM I". And then it hit me. I am a total GenX'er: Born in 1966. graduating from high school in 1984. You know the Bowling For Soup song 1985? The first time I heard it, I totally identified with it. Allll of it. Springsteen, Madonna, way before Nirvana there was U2 and Blondie and MUSIC STILL ON MTV. I was like, right??? We didn't have cable so does anyone else remember Friday Night Videos??? Back to my walk. Somewhere in the middle of all these 80's thoughts, I said to myself "that was totally awesome"....and BOOM, it hit me. Aging Youthful doesn't have an identity crisis, much like Frank Faranna recreated himself as Nikki Sixx, Aging Youthful is morphing into Totally Awesome Aging. Evvvvvvverything worth a $hiT in the 80's was totally awesome, so why should aging for us genX'ers be any different? As I introduce you to the new name, in this episode of the Aging Youthful Podcast (soon to be Totally Awesome Aging), I'm sharing my Top 3 Tips To Totally Awesome Aging. eXercisefiX your nutritionrelaXI kept this episode short, so give it a listen and tell me what you think. Have you been married or with your partner for a while and want to bring the spark back before you get to the point of needing to save your marriage? Mark and I have been together for 31 years and married for 28 of them, YIKES! Time really does fly and it seems like yesterday it was 1986 and we were two kids playing in a weekend broomball tournament on the same team. Sparks flew back then, but like with any relationship it’s had its ups and downs and it hasn’t always been rainbows and sunshine. No ma’am, but with every challenge, we’ve come out the other side with a deeper love and understanding for each other.First, I must pre-unqualify (is that a word?) myself as a relationship expert; I’m not a marriage therapist nor do I pretend everything is perfect in mine. Mark and my relationship is a work in progress and I’m only sharing a few things that helped us re-connect recently. My hope is to keep you from having to save your marriage, before it gets to the point of no return. Here we go, in no particular order. Welcome to the Aging Youthful podcast, episode number 21. In the last show I talked about a disturbing trend on social media: the over-filtering of photos. I see so many fake porcelain faces by mostly women and it saddens me. While I like to use filters to brighten a photo or focus in on something, I want you to see my earned laugh and smile lines. I encourage you to take a listen after this week’s show and take the Aging Youthful no filter challenge. This week, I’m sharing five things I believe are awesome about being 50 (and above). Let’s hop right in and get started…I also want to make give a quick moment of gratitude as this show has been accepted by as the FIRST “Made In Alaska” Podcast! The producing and editing of this show, as well as the beautiful intro/outro music was made right here in the last frontier, and I am honored to have been given this coveted designation. Check out the podcast artwork and you’ll see a little logo with a polar bear…be sure to look for it when you are shopping online for true “made in Alaska” gifts and more! Alright…let’s get into this week’s topic 5 Reasons Why Being 50-Something is AWESOME! Click here to head over to the blog to see the list! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome to the Aging Youthful Podcast, Episode #20! Last week I continued my non-consecutive series of What My Sled Dogs Taught me with Volume III: You must be willing to do what other’s won’t if you want to be/do/have what others don’t (which of course is to be Aging Youthful and not just “getting old”.). Be sure to check it, along with Episode 5 and Episode 12 for the first two lessons after this week’s show. This week I’m sharing something I have been seeing on social media that seems to be getting worse: over-filtering of photos. Yes, I know we’ve had a few rides around the sun and have a few lumps, bumps and skin flaws, but when I can barely tell someone has a nose, the filtering is out of hand. I’m getting fired up already, so we best get this party started…click here for the full blog post: https://agingyouthful.com/episode-20/Episode Links:Episode 5: What My Sled Dogs Taught Me, Vol. I: Finding Your Passion https://agingyouthful.com/episode-5/Episode 12: What My Sled Dogs Taught Me, Vol. II: Learning Is Messy https://agingyouthful.com/episode-12/eMBee Designs Boutique Online Store: https://embeedesignsboutique.com/Perfectly Imperfect Sticker: https://embeedesignsboutique.com/products/perfectly-imperfect-stickerPerfectly Imperfect Coffee Mug: https://embeedesignsboutique.com/products/perfectly-imperfect-mug-15-oz-1 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Is Your "Stuff" Keeping You Stuck?

Welcome to the Aging Youthful Podcast, Episode #17. Last week I shared one of my Aging Youthful life hacks: How To Start a Gratitude practice. The 5 minutes or so I spend writing out what I am grateful for life, has changed my life for the better. Check it out after this week’s show. This week I’m asking you a question: Is your “stuff” keeping you stuck. This quickie show will help you take a look around and see if all the stuff you have in your life (literal stuff), and if it’s holding you back from getting out and truly living life. Let’s dive right in. This past weekend, Mark and I hopped in the truck and made the six hour drive from Fairbanks to Valdez, Alaska. I had given Mark a “bucket list” Christmas present of a whale watching tour and as we walked along the pier to find our hosts, it made me think of a social media posting I had written a couple years ago after a hike with some friends in Denali National Park where we had a couple of brief deep life observation moments that led me to write the following post…Click the link to listen in!
