Can the blending masters at Rolling Fork Spirits pull off the exact same magic with a historic rye whiskey that they did with their massive Bourbon de Luxe revival? On this episode of Five Minute Fridays, Jake Lewellen cracks open and reviews the highly anticipated REWCO 6-Year Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey. Clocking in at 109.4 proof and priced at an approachable $59.99 MSRP, this bottle carries some serious historical weight.Named after R. E. Wathen (Richard E. Wathen), president of American Medicinal Spirits during Prohibition, REWCO is a brand resurrected straight out of the Wathen family's 200-year distilling legacy. But how does it actually drink today?Jake breaks down the incredibly unique, hybrid flavor profile of this small batch. Blending three barrels of traditional 74% rye with two barrels of high-spice 95% rye, this pour delivers an unexpected wave of sweet corn, baking spices, citrus zest, and grilled peaches on the nose, followed by a deeply complex tropical fruit sweetness on the palate. Is this Pre-Prohibition revival "The Zenith of Possibility in Whiskey Quality," or does it get lost in a crowded rye market? Drink responsibly, don't drink and drive A rum and rye blend that drinks like a serious rye, a 42-year cask-strength Armagnac that somehow stays silky, and a bourbon brand resurrected because a trademark clock was ticking. We sit down with Turner Wathan of Rolling Fork Spirits to taste, laugh, and get unusually honest about how bottles actually get made, found, and sold when they don't fit tidy categories. We dig into Fortuitous Union and why the “distilled spirit specialty” label can hide some of the best liquid on the shelf: foursquare rum, MGP rye, careful proofing, and a Weller barrel finish that pulls vanilla into the blend without muting spice. Turner shares how bartenders react, why tastings are the real marketing engine, and what he looks for when he's building something meant to be opened with friends. Then we go deep on Armagnac and Calvados through the Wayward Cask lens: container-sized buys, Gascony farmers, traveling stills, French oak that isn't charred, and the kind of terroir detail that makes brandy feel like a “final boss” spirit. We also talk Bourbon Deluxe, the Wathen family whiskey history, why Green River Distillery became the right partner, and what the current whiskey market slowdown means if you care about value, age statements, and authenticity. Ever wondered why it's so hard to get people to care about cybersecurity before disaster strikes? Joshua Wathen has a theory—and it might sound familiar to anyone who's tried to convince someone to buy insurance. In this conversation with Cam and Otis (plus a surprise appearance from thunder rolling in the Houston sky), Joshua shares his journey from Special Forces Weapons Sergeant to COO of Triad Info Sec. "We are of service to the people that are our customers, to each other, to our families," he explains, revealing the core value that drives his approach to both team building and cybersecurity. From his practical approach to hiring (where he roots out BS during interviews) to his spot-on comparison between cybersecurity and gun ownership ("if you don't understand it, you're not likely to invest in it until you get mugged"), Joshua offers refreshingly straightforward insights about protection in the digital age.Whether you're building a team, running a business, or just trying to figure out if your company needs better digital security, Joshua's blend of military precision and entrepreneurial wisdom offers a perspective you won't want to miss.More About Josh:I am Joshua Wathen, the Chief Operations Officer of Triad Info Sec, the owner of Dux Fortis Consulting and a member of the Board of Advisors for Owners In Honor. I have chosen to help build these entities because they are Veteran Owned and help others with service and security, both physically and digitally. My work is not a necessity at this point in my life. It is a calling. I am a US Army veteran and hold qualifications as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, a Special Operations Combat Medic, and an Airborne Infantryman. In that time, I learned that shiny medals are awarded for dark days done well, that people are more important than equipment, and most importantly, that your values are what make you who you are. Since leaving the military, I have become a serial entrepreneur, a husband, and a father. I have built several businesses in different industries and helped grow many different veteran service organizations ranging from PTSD treatment to business development for transitioning veterans. My value to any organization is that I am a team builder and a super connector. Jordan is a co-founder and blender at Rolling Fork Spirits, a company known for its diverse range of high-quality spirits. The company started with Rolling Fork Rum and has since expanded to include Wayward Cask, which features Calvados and Armagnacs from France, and Bourbon Deluxe, a Prohibition-era label they recently revived. The Origins of Rolling Fork Spirits Rolling Fork Spirits: Jordan explained that Rolling Fork Spirits is the parent company, with Rolling Fork Rum being their most well-known product. Expansion: The company has expanded to include Wayward Cask and Bourbon Deluxe, each offering unique and high-quality spirits. Historical Ties: Jordan's business partner, Turner, comes from the Wathen family, a name deeply rooted in the history of Kentucky bourbon. Bourbon Deluxe Revival Historical Significance: Bourbon Deluxe was a Prohibition-era label that Jordan and Turner revived after Jim Beam abandoned the trademark. Marketing and Branding: They aimed to maintain the vintage feel of the original label, including quirky taglines like "Glorious Sunshine of a Thousand Ages" and "The Zenith of Possibility in Whiskey Quality." The Journey into Rum and Other Spirits Initial Focus on Rum: Jordan discussed why they chose to start with rum, a spirit often underappreciated in the U.S. market but highly valued in Europe. Armagnac and Calvados: They later ventured into these spirits, which are beloved by industry insiders but not widely known among the general public. Blending and Bottling Blending Process: Jordan shared insights into their meticulous blending process, which involves selecting barrels based on specific criteria and balancing flavors to achieve the desired profile. Challenges and Strategies: He also talked about the challenges of blending, such as dealing with "bad barrels" and how to incorporate them into a blend without compromising quality. Market Dynamics and Pricing Value Proposition: Rolling Fork Spirits aims to offer high-quality spirits at reasonable prices. For example, their 25-year-old Calvados is priced at $149, a rarity in the market. Market Trends: Jordan touched on market trends, including the impact of COVID-19 on the spirits industry and the rising popularity of agave spirits. Personal Anecdotes and Stories Historical Anecdotes: Jordan shared a captivating story about an 1898 vintage Armagnac that was hidden in the walls of a house during the Nazi invasion, illustrating the rich history and craftsmanship behind these spirits. Industry Insights: He also provided insights into the independent bottling scene, comparing it to the more familiar concept of non-distilling producers in the U.S. This episode offers a deep dive into the world of spirits, from the historical roots of Rolling Fork Spirits to the complexities of blending and bottling. Whether you're a spirits enthusiast or just curious about the industry, this conversation with Jordan provides valuable insights and fascinating stories. Steve's verse:“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”Matthew 7:15-20WATCH NOW! To watch this podcast on YouTube, be sure to click here.

In fact, in this episode you get a chance to hear from someone who's family once owned the Old Grandad label. Turner Wathen has a deep family lineage rooted in bourbon, and that originally piqued my interest because I used to own a bottle of Wathen's bourbon. But not just any rum, but he set himself on a mission to become the upmost recognizable independent bottler of amazing, high age stated rum, that is now Rolling Fork Spirits Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about NDPs and bottled in bond. Can you give a background into how you found out your name was famous in bourbon? At what point did you decide to revive the family legacy? Are you still balancing your day job with all this? When did you decide that bourbon was crowded and looked at other spirits? Why is sorghum a bad grain to use? How important is it to find rum with no additives and why is that important? Was Fortuitous Union a mistake or the on purpose? Why was there a legal battle for Fortuitous Union? How much of an educational hurdle did you have to overcome? When did you switch from the Fortuitous Union brand back to a rum focus? Any reason why you haven't worked with any American rum producers? What is going on with all the rum taxes? Are we looking at the rare days of rum that would be equivalent to Van Winkle or early Jeffersons? Support this podcast on Patreon Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The community of Highland Park, Illinois, is in mourning days after a gunman opened fire, killing seven and wounding dozens more, as the suspect's father revealed in an interview with the New York Post that he wants his son to serve a long prison sentence.Yellow barricade tape stretched down the sidewalks along Central Avenue, the main route for the Fourth of July parade that was shattered by gunfire. Authorities said the gunman fired a semi-automatic rifle from a business rooftop at crowds below before fleeing the scene.Robert E. Crimo III, 21, who was arrested later Monday in connection with the shooting in suburban Chicago, admitted to authorities he was the gunman, prosecutors alleged Wednesday during a court hearing where a judge denied Crimo bond.He faces seven counts of first-degree murder and a sentence of life in prison, if convicted. Illinois abolished capital punishment in 2011."I want a long sentence," the suspect's father, Robert Crimo Jr., said, according to a report by the Post. "That's life. You know you have consequences for actions. He made a choice. He didn't have to do that."Crimo will face additional charges for those he wounded, along with the murder charges already filed, Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart said. "It's vital to the healing of this community that every single victim receives justice," Rinehart told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday. Also revealed publicly Wednesday: After the shooting, Crimo drove to Wisconsin's capital of Madison on Monday and contemplated a shooting there before deciding against it, authorities said. That might have been one of two narrowly avoided mass gun attacks at July Fourth celebrations nationwide. Police in Virginia say a tip may have foiled a separate attack plot, unrelated to Crimo, in Richmond. In Highland Park, residents have been paying their respects in the days following the shooting to those killed or wounded, with some overcome with emotion, others kneeling in prayer.Hundreds gathered at a candlelight vigil Wednesday night at nearby Everts Park, where a multitude of orange ribbons -- signifying gun violence awareness -- were seen hanging as "Amazing Grace" was played on bagpipes. As the grieving continues, more people are coming forward to share their experiences the morning of the shooting, including Lily Wathen, who was about to begin marching in the parade when gunfire broke out. Her grandparents were sitting "right across from where the shooter" was located, she told CNN."Every single year of my life, we've gone to this parade, and they wanted to be there specifically so that when I passed by in the parade, I would be able to find them there," Wathen said. Her grandfather was struck by shrapnel in his shoulder, barely missing his lungs, but doctors say he will make a full recovery, she said. The trauma of the event, however, has "shaken a lot of people up," she said. "It's hard to say how we'll be in a year, but for right now, it's scary to even think about going back."Two people wounded remained hospitalized at NorthShore University Health System facilities as of Wednesday afternoon and were in stable condition, according to spokesperson Jim Anthony. A total of 39 people had been treated for injuries, he said, and an 8-year-old boy was transferred to UChicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital, which confirmed the child is in critical but stable condition.Suspect's father thought he would use weapons at shooting range, report saysThe suspect's father decided to sponsor his son's firearm owner's identification card (FOID), a document needed to buy a weapon in Illinois, because he thought his son would take the weapons to a shooting range, the New York Post reported."He bought everything on his own, and they're registered to him," Crimo Jr. told the Post."They make me like I groomed him to do all this," he said, according to the report, which...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A special episode recorded on International Women's Day 2022. We are joined by the inspirational Deborah Wathen-Finn, the President of the Wathen Group. Deb has an incredible track record of success working as a woman in the male-dominated industry of public transit before moving on to form the Wathen Group. She shares with us her secrets for how she turned around the performance of New Jersey Transit. Turning NJ Transit from the worst performing agency in the region to a high performance team that the others were left to admire.Deb's secret was to treat people with respect; treat them like they matter; and actively engage them in the change process. It is often the people on the shop floor, those closest to the action, that have the best ideas of what is needed to be done. Create an environment where people feel their voice is heard; where there opinions are valued and where people have the psychological safety that allows them to speak up. This will provide great insights into what he happening in your team and business and what can be done to achieve high performance We spoke of the challenges of the “messy middle” where change efforts can get lost without effective communication and engagement with middle management. You can have executive management with a clear vision and you can have those at the shop floor with a desire to change and do better and the message is lost in middle management if there is not effective communication.Deb's inspirational story is not one to be missed. If you would like to know more about Deb and The Wathen Group you can find them at www.thewathengroup.com Our sponsor today was SPI Media. You can apply to join SPI Pro at the following link - https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/pro-application?via=TLP You can find SPI's amazing array of courses at the following link - https://courses.smartpassiveincome.com/?affcode=30425_fv3kfsf4 You can find more information on The Leadership Project at the following links:You can join our Private Facebook Community at the following link - https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326 Follow The Leadership Project on all of our social channels as follows:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-leadership-proj Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProj Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theleadershipproj Twitter - https://twitter.com/leadershipproj1 Website - www.mickspiers.com YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab

We talk about transitioning from Special Forces to becoming a Freshmen in college, the world of entrepreneurship, and of course Bunker Labs.
