I live in Whistler, BC. I started this podcast with no agenda. I like to talk to people, I like to laugh, I like to not take things too seriously and I am trying to become a better listener. These conversations are casual.
Episode #60 with Kenzie McGowan. Kenzie is long-time friend of mine and is one of the most positive and friendly humans out there. Kenzie joins me in the kitchen studio to chat about Astrology. Dave Petko joins me for EP #52. Dave is a long time Whistler local (nearly 30 yrs) who owns Black Ohm Tattoo shop down in Function Junction, the OG tattoo shop in town. This is EP #50 and it is a little different. It is a short one with just me telling a story about how a homeless man and a prostitute made for one the strangest events in my life... so far. There are people who struggle with addiction and/or illnesses that consume their lives. This not about making light of anyone who may be suffering in life and cannot find the support or resources they need while the system fails them again and again. This is a story of how my belongings were stolen from my hotel room by two people who must have had one wild night and how I ended up getting my stuff back. Take care out there and I hope you enjoy this one. Thank you for listening or watching. Back with a late start to 2023 after a long pause since March. Getting back into this podcast thing and started with my good buddy Ty to talk shit about last year and this year, kinda. Don't pay more than $20 for pitcher of beer, sneak your own booze in. A good amount to talk about. If I ever get the video file to be un-fucked, I'll get it posted on YT. For now the audio version is King! Thanks for joining, Ty! Find it on Spotify and iTunes as well. Thank you for listening.
Josh Hill returns for EP #48 on Casual With Me. We address a few topics that maybe of interest to some of you: Uncle Roger, cowboy shirts, aliens, hitchhiker egos, teleporting, some old TV shows, comfort food, a stupid made up gas price theory and how thumbs in belt loops is a lifestyle choice. Thanks for the hang, Josh! Thank you to everyone who tunes into this thing. You are the real ones! Youtube: https://youtu.be/9C3tWUusNAU Apple Podcasts: It'll be there soon. Let me start off by addressing the lip smacking. I wanted to re-record this because I wasn't happy with the lip smacking the first time around. Welp, here we are on round two and we both proceeded to make that annoying noise again, so fuck it. Here is EP #46 with my bro, Proctor. This is as casual as it gets. We are in Costa Rica, it is hot, he is living here, I'm mooching. I'm happy I got to spend time chilling with him and his fam for a month. The roosters are insane. Enjoy if you want, or don't enjoy if you don't want. Fine with me. Thanks, big bro! And thanks for all of those who do enjoy! Nice work out there. You can find this on Spotify and iTunes, etc... Just search my name and add Casual. Youtube link for the real deal: https://youtu.be/AcmCIr8MzCU
This is EP #45 with Pete Thompson. We drink a few beers and chat. We talk about the brief history of my Podcast, grocery store social problems, what groceries say about you, what only buying TP says about you, spices, how funny and not funny falling down the stairs is, would you consume Bull semen for $100,000, or try for a $1,000,000 if you had to get it yourself first? There is a bit about the stampede in there and some other stuff. All very funny. Thanks for listening or watching! Tell your friends, or strangers even. Breakfast is also a big deal in Whistler and the discussion about who has the best breakfast wrap (and to some, burrito) is a long standing issue. Might not be talked about much, but this matters. Also, Whistler food shops, please decide if what you have is a wrap or burrito. Anyway, we review Moguls, Alpine Cafe, Mount Currie (Whistler) and Delish Cafe in Function. Hope you enjoy. This is Angela Percival and this is EP #44. Ange is the staff photographer at Arc'teryx and has been at for like 15 years(?). I met Ange in 2011 when I started working there and we were commuting buddies for a few years. Ange has been around the world for work and travel and we talk all about it. We talk about her inspiration, being meaningful and what role we all play in life, and what our contribution means to the world around us. She tells me how she watched her home town burn down around the family home while visiting her family back in Australia. We also discuss what being home really means and a bunch more. It was great and I really enjoyed catching up. We talk photography, too. Thank you for the time, Ange and I look forward to our next chat or pedal or ski... This is EP #43 with Ian McIntosh and Me. I first met Ian when I was the athlete manager for Whistler Blackcomb back around 2007 when the ski industry was in its prime. Ian is a professional big mountain skier and has been sliding on two sticks since he was 2. His ski career has taken him to the Freeride World Tour and made him a staple in the Teton Gravity Research (TGR) film family for more than a decade. He still travels to ski and film, but now balances his ski life with his growing family and stacking his guiding certs to plan for the future. I It was great to connect with Ian again and chat skiing, health, nutrition, aliens, being a dad and other stuff we will need to finish next time! Thanks for taking the time to join me on the show, Ian! Really great to catch up. Thanks for taking the time to join me on the show, Ian! Really great to catch up. Pizza is a big deal in Whistler and the discussion about which pizza joint has best pie is always up for debate. Thankfully myself and Tyler decided to provide our professional pizza opinion to help clear the air. We chose basic pepperoni from 4 of Whistler Take-out/Delivery pie shops: Fat Tony's, Misty Mountain, Functional Pie and Avalanche. (Dominos is in a class of it's own) You'll have to listen to find out the results of round 1. Stay tuned for more rounds and more food. This is Kyle Black and this is EP #42. I've known Kyle for a few years now, we met while working at Lululemon. We both lasted about a year there. Kyle has been in Whistler like 10 years I think and he currently manages a legendary snowboard shop here in Whistler, Showcase Snowboards. We have a great talk about things we learned in retrospect from past jobs, we talk about brands, aliens, Kyle's road to Whistler, how we both went to the same collage, his semi recent diagnosis with Crohn's disease and his ongoing management of it, we also compare our appendicitis stories and a bunch more. Really fun chat and I look forward to having Kyle on the show again. Thanks for the time, Kyle! *Video Alert: The video cuts out with about 30 mins left in the podcast. Made me feel kind of nostalgic and just like old times in the early days of this Casual experience when that kind of shit happened on the reg. Big
EP #41 and Tyler C. is back for a fourth time? I can't remember. Don't let the intro fool you, the audio is fine. Just a little peep into the BTS of this giant media corp. We talk about Tyler lending me his XBOX One which leads us into gaming for a bit, then we talk about quicksand, Alien motives, the difference between saying you are on Holiday and Vacation, selling cars, german actors, when is haggling appropriate, horrible highway construction, flipping your friends off after they wave to you, not recognizing people fast enough, and bunch more stuff. Tyler is funny as, mate! Always good to have him on the show. Thanks again for the chat, Tyler! All the listeners and watchers are the real GOAT's. Madison Perry is my guest on EP #39. Madison is a Whistler local by way of Vancouver and is in the real estate game up here in the mountains. I mean, I guess it is a game, or gig or job... basically she sells homes to people. We talk about all that right out of the gate until the conversation turns to her early years coming to Whistler as a teenager, moto life, old people names, past jobs and other stuff like aliens, 23 and Me... Mark Abma = EP #38. I am going to assume if you are skier who follows skiing, you know who Mark is, but just in case.. Mark is a professional skier and entrepreneur and seems to love being outside more than inside. His segment in MSP Seven Sunny Days (TV On Radio - Wolf Like Me song) from 2007 is for sure in my top 5 favourite seggies ever! That movie was also the first time I got to work with Mark. He was one of the first I heard of to convert cooking oil into fuel for his "monster" truck. We talk a little about skiing, but Mark fills me in on his personal wellness and health focus as well has his new project on Gambier Island with longtime friend Chris Turpin. We also talk about travel, his winter plans and as usual other stuff I forget about. It was a great chat and I think I'll be buying a brain wave headband soon, as well as a bidet. Thanks for the chat, Mark! Great to have you on the show! You can find Mark on instagram @MarkAbma Video version on Youtube: https://youtu.be/I8Ys78GcPTE Audio links: Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/episode/3S65PiFTzEJkQi5FlXw6IN?si=-yZOtFYaS4qTCx-BOiwXVw Thanks for supporting the podcast!
First off, I need to thank Darren Rayner at Magnafire for helping salvage the file! So... Thanks, Darren! Eric Berger rings in from Gambier Island for EP #37.(Skype) Eric is a professional photographer hailing from Quebec and now lives between Whistler, Gambier Island and his VW camper van. He came to Whistler about 35 years ago and I've known him fo 13 years or something like that. We talk about skiing, photography, his Gambier Island retreat, BBQ'ing, his VW Van and probably some other stuff. It was great to catch up and the audio/video is way better other the random beeping that turned out to be my dishwasher and the cabin ambiance of the crackling fire. Great to chat with you, Eric! Thanks for joining me! Thanks to all those who tune their ears into the show and double thanks to the who tune in there eyes as well! On the line with EP #36 and Smiley Nesbitt. Smiley is currently a realtor in Vancouver, but before that he was a few things including pro skier and could sink a turn better than most. Still can, I am sure. If you are from anywhere in Quebec, you probably have good style and as you can tell in this video his style followed him out west. He's one of the first pro's I met when I landed my first gig in the industry. I looked up to his rebelliousness and humour toward, well, most things and was excited to have him on the show. Anyway, he's a friendly dude and conversationalist, which that's perfect for a podcast like this. I am sure he's got more stories to tell and I hope we can get into more of those next time - in person! Thanks for the time, Smiley! And, sorry for being jittery and distracting during out chat. Been a while, eh? This is EP #35 with Tristan Merrick. Tristan and I met like 15 years ago while working for Whistler Blackcomb. Over the years we worked more closely during our time with the iconic Crankworx mountain bike festival in Whistler where Tristan was an athlete turned announcer. His career has taken him around the globe announcing action sports events from mountain biking, to motocross, to trophy trucks, etc... He is now a local freelance producer working at a pretty well known yoga brand based in Vancouver. And, he is fresh into dad life. Weak internet, odd audio, but a really good chat! Hope you enjoy! Thanks for the time, Tristan! You can find the video version on Youtube shortly. Or more audio on Spotify and itunes - Also, shout out to the Shaw Cable for the most garbage internet north of the 49th.
This is EP #34 and my bro, Kent or Proctor as I call him. It just makes sense. I hope we make this more of a regular thing, because no matter how long we've been brothers for, it is always great to talk shit with my big bro. We talk about distancing, parenting, comedy and um.... I can't remember. If you care to listen, cool. If not, I'll tell my big brother and he'll come looking for you! Thank for hitting me up to chat again, Proctor. Luv ya, bro! If you wanna watch a grainy skype video click the link below. https://youtu.be/dMGdn2BgKVs Or you can find me on iTunes and Spotify
Adam Levitt comes back on the show for EP #33. We get heavy into the Social Distancing topic and this Corona Virus. We talk about the present, future and what we see happening around us. From social media to social distancing to the fucking idiot President down south and the idiot Tiger King who might as well be president. Its a great chat and I get to hear for the first time as people cheer our front line workers from balconies and windows. It is always a great chat with Adam. Talk to your family, talk to your friends, nod to a stranger, wave to a bus bus driver and thank anyone doing the jobs we need doing. Good luck out there! God Speed! Thanks for taking the time, Adam! Andrew Freedman is the Cannabis Sommelier who is also a Sommelier in the original sense, so he knows a lot about wine and grass. We met about a year ago through contacts in the weed scene. This is Josh Mitchell and EP #32. He works as an Alaskan fishermen working out of Prince William Sound who shares his time been that and working in Antarctica on Research Vessels. We’ll have been friends for like a week by the time this EP goes live. We met while he was visiting Tony Richardson ( my friend and guest who holds the current record for most viewed EP) Anyway, like I said earlier, Josh currently works a portion of the year on research vessels in Antarctica where he produces, films and supports scientists who study whales, salmon and other important things our planet is home to. We talk about his earlier years on Alaskan fishing boats, how he got on to research vessels, the evidence of a suffering earth that he has witnessed first hand over the years, and what it’s like to track and record sea life in peril. This guy has some great stories to share and is doing important things to help us all understand how we are impacting our environment and planet. We had some beers, but it was a sobering talk. Thanks for chatting with me, Josh! And thank you for the work you do, we all appreciate it! This is my buddy Josh Hill. We met while working for lululemon a few years ago. Josh lives just down the street from me with a wolf in an apt above a bakery. Anyway, he works in the construction biz for a company that does restoration if your home floods or gets F'd up for some other reason. He is chatty AF and is a good dude. We talk about cops, tickets, his work, aliens, insurance and the brutal potholes in Whistler as well as a bunch of other stuff that might make you laugh or click the X and move on from youtube. Hopefully you enjoy our chat about the everyday. Thank for listening. Oh, and he does funny instagram sing-along videos in his car. Despite my reassuring confidence at the start I don't actually hit record on the audio until about 45 mins in. I fixed it as best I could so you can hear the whole show. Thanks for coming by, Josh! Find him at @Joshuv_ if you want to. If you want to watch in youtube check it out here: http://bit.ly/2TzhNjs or find me on iTunes and Spotify at Casual with Ryan Proctor.
This is EP #29 and my guest is Guy Fattal, an award winning whistler based action sports photographer. Guy grew up in Israel and after 3 years in the military (a mandatory thing there) Guy hit the road with his camera in hand. Eventually ending up in Whistler after winning a photo contest in Italy which included a trip to Whistler and a wild card spot in Whistler's Deep Winter Photo Challenge (An event that helped launch many impressive photo careers, but has since been squashed by WB because it is washed) We talk about Guys career path, growing up in Israel, his military experience and how it gave him focus and taught him dedication. We chat photography contests, his recent interest in long distance trail running and a bunch more. Guy brought over and brewed up some fancy coffee he brought over from his favourite coffee shop in Jerusalem. So dam good! Thanks for the chat, Guy! EP #28 and I had a great chat with Catherine Mazza the Assistant Manager at WAG (Whistler Animals Galore) here in Whistler. I have been thinking of getting a dog and figured it would be good to talk to an expert on adoption and living with a pet in Whistler. I think we cover most of it: what WAG is, what WAG does, how it operates and how the adoption process works as well as how we can support WAG so they can continue to help dogs and cats find good homes in the Sea to Sky. Thanks for the chat, Catherine! EP #27 with the Certified Rocket Men, Jesse Millen and Craig Gouweloos. No surprise this one is about snowboarding, but we also talk movies, conversation etiquette, social media, phone books, driving ski boots, more snowboarding, good/bad memes and bail humour culture, etc... We almost made it to see the Joker, but then didn't. The first Casual live stream on Instagram took place which as pretty neat, but we kind of forgot it was happening. Good chat boys and thanks for helping with the studio build and teardown. EP #26 and this is Kevin Winter, Founder of Coast Mountain Brewing in Whistler, BC. I see him on a semi regular basis and think the beer he and his team create is pretty darn good. I sat down with Kevin in Coast Mountain's Tap House in Function Junction, just south of Whistler and we talk about how to make great beer, his business, his history in beer making and probably more beer stuff. It's 9am in the morning so as responsible adults we don't drink any of the beer we are talking about. If you like beer and want some insight into what goes into the process and how Coast Mountain came to be then this should do the trick. If you flip to youtube to watch, you might notice the light getting all blown out during the last 12 mins of the podcast. Oops. Thanks for the chat Kevin. Cheers! www.coastmountainbrewing.com Instagram@CoastMountainBeer If you would rather watch the youtube version...https://youtu.be/wjxjSK28Vk0
This is my good friend Sarah Leishman and this is EP #25, the Silver Anniversary, in podcast years anyway. We met a few years ago and have been making fun of a lot of things since day one. Sarah has worn many hats, probably literally and in terms of her career from snowboard coach, to Ski Patrol, professional EWS mountain biker and now her "office career" as a professional marketer for some pretty cool brands. We talk about a bunch of stuff including careers, being a pro athlete and dealing with mental and physical challenges, balancing life/career, travel, and how stuffy and weird "schmoozey" events can be. We talk about Mid-Packers and how funny that is. We also get distracted by Gord, Sarah's black lab who likes to mingle. Thanks for letting me into your Kitchen, Sarah! This is Dr. Kaylee and this is EP #24. Dr. Kaylee is a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine who focuses on nutrition, prolotherapy, PRP, medical aesthetics and IV nutrients.(*Fact check: At 1hr 12 mins in I ask about Crohn's disease which is very similar to Colitis and can be mistakenly diagnosed as one or the other as Kaylee explains to me after the show.) We talk about general health, basic nutrition including the various diets(Paleo Keto, etc..) and how dietary needs are different from person to person, the Canadian Nutrition Guide, cleanses and how stress and sleep affect your wellbeing. We talk about food allergies and how food can affect auto-immune system, allergy tests and elimination diets to discover food sensitivities, IV therapy and bunch of other stuff. This is a great nutrition 101 convo. Also MSM stands for Methylsulfonylmethane in case you are wondering. Thanks for all the listens and views. Feel free to subscribe here or Youtube so you get first alerts when EP's go live. Kyle James is an artist, filmmaker, editor, director, producer, Australian, snowboarder, good dude and has won awards for his work. His company Husky Films specializes in animation, stop motion, and real people films. He and his crew won 1st Place at the 72 hr Filmmaker Showdown at the WSSF in April 2019 with his stop motion film "Kevin". We talk about his work in the film world, the 72hr contest, comedy, and a bunch more. I call him Kevin at the end which is annoying for both of us. Sorry about that, Kyle! Until next time! You can check out “Kevin” and the rest of Kyle's work here: https://huskyfilms.com/#/kevin/ And follow him here: https://www.instagram.com/kjhusky/
This is EP #22 with Tony Richardson. I think Tony has done everything. He is an adventurer, designer and co-owner of Squamish Design Studio (or SQUAD Studio as he prefers) with his girlfriend Trina and his bro. He was nice enough to let me into his studio for this one. We met about 8 years ago while working at Arc'teryx in Vancouver and our chat rolls through our time there, how Tony came to be an apparel, pack, shoe etc.. designer and his current business. We touch on some past adventures including his climbing mission to Baffin island back during the Arc'teryx days. We get on about a lot of other things including the choices we make in our lives, the path we take, ditching the 9-5 and his new art/apparel project Curlib (@Curlib) which was officially made public on the show! So legit and you gotta say it with a serious french roll of the tongue to really get the idea. This was a great chat and it was great to catch up Tony. Looking forward to the next time! This is EP 21 with Kevin and Kris or 2/3s of "2 Dontas 1 Proctor Productions". This is the Benched EP where we talk about making our 72 Filmmaker Showdown video. We were very happy to take home People's Choice for our little film and for being able to have our faces on the big screen. I can go on and on about what we talk about, but I won't. We provide commentary while playing the video and I figured out how to edit video in video for that part, which is right out of the gate for anyone who has not seen it. There is a swear jar as well... so that's cool. This is Dano Pendygrasse. He knows a lot. Like tonnes. Especially about snowboarding. Dano plays an important role in snowboard photography and documenting the sport's history. He let me into his home to record this one before he almost went to a Neil Young show that night. Anyway, we talk about his photography and history, his current brand stuff and our career paths, art, life, health and doing what makes you happy. I think Dano knows something about everything. At one point the guy starts asking me questions (WTF is that?), so that gets interesting and I talk some shit. Good times hangin' in Gastown with Mr. Dano Pendygrasse. I hope you enjoy this one.Cheers! Chad Chomlack is a really good dude. I'm not sure how to describe him other than that. He is a husband, a dad, the Photo Editor of SBC Snowboard Mag, he can pronounce you married and is a purveyor of positivity. He's got some serious cred in snowboarding, but we don't spend much time talking about it accept for right out of the gate. Then, we cut into topics like posture, driving, living clean and taking care of yourself, golfing, the influence we feel from our surroundings, raising kids, words we should and shouldn't use anymore and like I've said before, who the fuck knows what else. I hope you enjoy our chat, because I did. #Proctor #Casual #Chomlack #Snowboarding #Photography
This is the Audio Only EP #18 and it features Greg Hill. I casually rolled into Revelstoke for a chat with Greg and it almost works out perfectly. Audio only is my fault and we'll just leave it at that. Greg is a skier, mountaineer, adventurer, a family man and cool dude. He has accomplished many great things in the mountains and his goal is to ensure he relies on fossil fuels less and less each time he heads out on an adventure. E-cars, E-bikes, E-everything someday. Greg is an ambassador for Protect Our Winters Canada, but I assume he thinks we should protect our winters in every country. We talk about E-vehicles, travel, injuries, aliens, the risks of being an adventurer and seeking out the wild places on our planet. We talk about a few other things and Greg keeps me on track as I try and derail the conversation in random directions. Hopefully he'll be back and I'll turn my camera on next time.
This is the Catch 22 EP with Todd Lawson. Todd is the Publisher and Photo Editor at Mountain Life Magazine and Mountain Life Annual. He is an adventurer and world traveller who has logged countless miles paddle boarding local whitewater in the Sea to Sky to dirt biking across Africa. He and his family spend their time between Whistler and the Philippines and he sees the impact of cultures colliding. This episode covers what Mountain Life is all about, how travelling impacts our environment and helps us learn how we can be better stewards of the planet we travel around. Can social media help us understand the world better or does it detach us from reality even more. Can we still travel and learn about our planet to teach ourselves how to minimize our impact? Can we balance out and live a neutral life? Is net zero possible? instagram:@mountainlifemedia Web:https://www.mountainlifemedia.ca/ #Proctor #Casual #MountainLife #Whistler
This is Jamie Drummond and this is the longest podcast yet, but that's a good thing. Jamie has been in Whistler for 17 years. She is a message therapist and has become an expert on 7/11 slurpees. We talk about animal and child etiquette, family stuff, crazy hair, allergies (as I usually do), public bathroom etiquette and who knows what else. #Casual #Proctor #Podcast #Whistler
This is Jenna Mae, one of the friendliest people I know and is high up on the list of talented Whistler singer/songwriters. This is a really fun episode because Janna Mae brought some Filipino food to share with me, so we eat food on-air for the first 15 mins. Feel free skip by that if you aren't into ASMR stuff. We talk about food (I learn about ASMR and MukBang), manifesting your life; visiting the Philippines, being a cultural, female role model in Whistler, white privilege, believing in aliens or a higher power, some shady dudes who should be in jail... We joke around a lot as well. #asmr #podcast #casual #lovejennamae #talkshow
My guest this week is Arne Gutmann. This guy is a long-time Whistler character and one friendly dude. He kinda shit-talked the Mayor and I for the beer we were drinking during the last podcast which lead to him coming on the show. I've known him for a while and don't know much about him, but our chat for ep 14 was great! He's a DJ who has played big clubs in Toronto back in his day, he's an artist, he's dedicated to the SUP and a few years ago create a shitty font in his spare time. We talk about it all and a few other things. Instagram: @ThatGuyArne PooFont:https://poofont.com/
