Talking Drupal #498 - DOJ Accessibility Ruling

Talking Drupal

In this episode of Talking Drupal, we discuss the latest DOJ accessibility ruling and its implications for Drupal with special guest Josh Mitchell. Josh, a seasoned expert who has led teams in digital agencies, governments, and non-profits, sheds light on what the ruling means for state and local governments, the importance of accessibility, and steps to achieve compliance. We also explore the Sa11y module, a powerful tool for enhancing website accessibility, and compare it with the Editorially module. Additionally, we touch on the upcoming MID Camp 2025. Tune in for an insightful discussion on making web content more accessible for all. For show notes visit: https://www.talkingDrupal.com/498 Topics Can you give us an overview of the DOJ Accessibility Ruling Does this apply to federal websites When does this go into effect How does this affect current sites Hwo is Drupal positioned against this Does this rule apply to all content such as PDFs Any tips to organizations JS widgets Resources Announcement of the rule Full text of the rule - PDF Fact sheet for meeting the requirements of the rule https://www.ada.gov/resources/2024-03-08-web-rule/ https://www.drupal.org/docs/getting-started/accessibility/how-to-do-an-accessibility-review AXE Core Core issue to automate accessibility tests with Nightwatch.js Keyboard traps COTS - Commercial off the shelf software VPATS - Voluntary product accessibility template Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) Monsido - Acquia optimize - PDF Josh's blog post Guests Joshua "Josh" Mitchell - joshuami.com joshuami Hosts Nic Laflin - nLighteneddevelopment.com nicxvan John Picozzi - epam.com johnpicozzi Kathy Beck - kbeck303 MOTW Correspondent Martin Anderson-Clutz - mandclu.com mandclu Brief description: Have you ever wanted your Drupal site to have a built-in accessibility tool that could identify things like potential color contrast issues? There's a module for that Module name/project name: Sa11y Brief history It's worth mentioning that the name is a numeronym, so spelled s-a-1-1-y, which plays off of a common way the word “accessibility” is abbreviated How old: created in Jan 2018 by Bryan Sharpe (b_sharpe) but the namespace was taken over in Jun 2024 by Mark Conroy (markconroy) of LocalGov Drupal, so the current 3.0.1 release, which supports Drupal 10 and 11, is a completely different module than the original 8.x-1.x branch. Maintainership Actively maintained, in fact this module came out of the ongoing work being done on the LocalGov distribution and profile Security coverage Test coverage: no, but the module is effectively just a wrapper for the Sa11y library, which is CMS agnostic and used in the Wordpress and Joomla communities as well The Sa11y library has its own website, which includes documentation Number of open issues: 1 open issues, which isn't a bug Usage stats: 62 sites Module features and usage We did cover the Editoria11y accessibility checker as MOTW all the way back in episode #350, almost 3 years ago, and Sa11y was mentioned at that time. Both modules have had major releases since then, so I thought this week's episode would be a chance to do an updated comparison Sa11y does include some checks that Editoria11y does not, such as color contrast checking and a readability score The Editoria11y module, on the other hand, includes site-wide reporting that would be helpful for site admins, as well as a wealth of configuration options including one or more DOM elements to use as the container to check within, a list of elements to exclude, and so on. Recent versions of Editoria11y also include an option for live feedback as you edit, which should work with CKEditor 5, Paragraphs 5 or newer, and Gutenberg At the end of the day, however, both projects are intended to provide your content editors with immediate feedback on the accessibility compliance of what they create. So, it's worth looking at the feedback each tool provides and deciding which one is more useful for your team in particular

There's a module for that. Module name/project name: Token OR Brief history How old: created in May 2018 by Daniel Beeke (danielbeeke) of the Netherlands Versions available: 2.3.0 Maintainership Actively maintained, current release appx 2 mo old Security coverage Test coverage Number of open issues: 8 open issues, 3 of which are bugs against the current branch Usage stats: 2,369 sites Module features and usage After installing this module, your tokens can contain pipe-separated values, including a quote-enclosed literal string, and the token will return the first token or string that is not empty. This allows your tokens to have fallback values. For example you could have a token grab an event's start date, or show “TBD” if the field is empty. The project page doesn't explicitly say that a single token can have more than two token reference or string values, but it seems implied. If true, that would mean you could define a token that would grab from one field, look in a different field if the first one is empty, and return a string if neither field has a value. Because Token OR uses pipe characters to delineate between values, the module currently doesn't support pipe characters within string values. This is one of the open issues, but there is a patch available. Previous guest host Josh Mitchell mentioned that he had never heard of this module until he noticed it is in the codebase for Drupal CMS, so I thought it would be ideal to talk about on this show, as an example of some lesser-known best practices that you'll get out of the box when you start building sites on Drupal CMS.

I've never given Birmingham the credit it's due. The City of 1000 Trades knows and loves its beer. And yet, for some unknown reason, for many drinkers who live outside the area it doesn't rank among the UK's top beer towns. As I learned on my most recent visit, this sentiment is neither fair nor accurate. In reality, Birmingham has not only a thriving but a varied scene. In the town centre you can hop from proper pubs such as the Post Office Vaults or The Wellington, to craft beer joints like Tilt or Kilder, or to brewery taprooms such as Dig or Burning Soul. Like a lot of bigger cities, however, some of the best beer in modern beer culture lies beyond this periphery. Neighbourhood bars and bottle shops are becoming cornerstones of the suburban communities, as are its breweries. In Stirchley, to the south of central Birmingham, the scene is thriving, and it's here where Glasshouse Beer Co. has made its home. Founded in 2018, the brewery has quickly established itself both locally, and in some of the more beer savvy venues around the UK. This is largely thanks to its mastery over hazy pale ales, which range from sessionable table beers, right the way through to almighty DIPAs. There's far more to this young brewery than a bit of fuss though, and it's already dialling in other styles, from lagers, to barrel aged sour beers. I sat down for a fun, beer fuelled chat with founder Josh Hughes, lead brewer Dave Sharp, and head of sales Josh Mitchell. We cover a lot of ground, talking about the brewery and the beers themselves, to digging into why Birmingham's beer scene doesn't get its fair share of the limelight. Seeing as its four blokes sat around the table (a classic beer podcast scenario, one might say) we also take time to discuss the recent reckoning within craft beer, and how groups like ours can take proper accountability and action in light of accusations of sexism and workplace abuse. Pellicle is supported by our Patreon subscribers — please consider helping to keep our independent magazine and podcast sustainable with a monthly, or yearly donation. President Biden's recent announcement to forgive $10,000 dollars of student loan debt for single borrowers making less than $125,000 a year and couples making less than $250,000 a year, has made those with student loan debt grateful for the relief and those who have already paid off their loans and those who never went to college raising questions about fairness.  However, we need to better understand the root cause of the student loan debt crisis in America. Newt's guest is Josh Mitchell.  He is a reporter in the London bureau of The Wall Street Journal, and his book: “The Debt Trap: How Student Loans Became a National Catastrophe” is out in paperback now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The setting was symbolic, the stakes were high, and the president minced no words. Joe Biden used a primetime address to rebuke Donald Trump and Republican extremism. In a speech outside Philadelphia's Independence Hall – considered the birthplace of America – Biden warned that MAGA forces could crush democracy. The man who started his presidency preaching unity and refusing to use his predecessor's name has made a choice to confront what he sees happening in the Republican Party. Meanwhile in an interview, former President Trump suggested he might pardon some Capitol insurrectionists. It made for a split screen laying bare the two Americas and the two vastly different choices facing the country months before the midterms. Political commentator S.E. Cupp joins the show to discuss.  Also on today's show: author Josh Mitchell; musicians Nick Sanborn & Amelia Meath of the indie pop duo Sylvan Esso.To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

Driven by mass migrations of both workers and employers, red states have been winning the post-pandemic economic recovery over blue states.  Not really a move because of political preferences, workers left for financial and lifestyle reasons such as cheaper housing, less Covid restrictions and lower taxes.  Biggest winners are Florida, Texas, and North Carolina while California, New York and Illinois have lost the greatest number of residents.  Josh Mitchell, reporter at the WSJ, joins us for how red states have had quicker recoveries. Next, we'll tell you about Jonathan Mitchell, the architect of the Texas abortion law.  Known by many to be a very bright legal mind, his legal theories and court cases have laid the groundwork which brought down Roe v. Wade.  Looking ahead to what is next, he has jumped into other lawsuits over everything from a contraceptive mandate to affirmative action and same-sex marriage.  His theories are based in textualism, which basically refers to the thought that if a constitutional right is not mentioned in the constitutional text, then it doesn't exist.  Lauren McGaughy, investigative reporter at the Dalla Morning News, joins us for more. Americans owe more than $1.5 trillion in student debt and some members of the Millennial and Gen Z wonder whether they'll ever pay off their loans. Student loans began as a well-intended government program to help increase America's brainpower in the Cold War era, but as our guest this week describes, grew into a political and financial morass that's swept up millions of people over the past 50 years. The Department of Education announced on April 19 that at least 40,000 borrowers will be eligible for debt forgiveness through a loan forgiveness program for public servants, but as we discuss in this episode, the program is complicated and places an administrative burden on borrowers to comply with its rules. Our guest this week is Josh Mitchell, a reporter who covers the economy and higher education for The Wall Street Journal, and author ofThe Debt Trap: How Student Loans Became a National Catastrophe. In the book, Mitchell  draws alarming parallels to the housing crisis in the late 2000s, showing the catastrophic consequences student debt has had on families and the nation's future. Additional InformationThe Debt Trap: How Student Loans Became a National CatastropheApril 2022 loan forgiveness announcement from the Department of Education
