Anneke Beerten was one of the top mountain bikers in the world for a decade, starting her career as a two-time BMX world champion before dominating the 4 cross circuit with three world titles. She's gone through many career transitions over the years, embracing Enduro and Crankworx to earn even more accolades. In early 2020, just after finishing her best season in enduro racing, she was in a car accident that forced her to retire from racing. She spent years in rehab, moved states, and started over in Bentonville. Now, she's one of the most sought-after skills coaches in the business. Anneke sat down with Payson this week to talk about the many disciplines she's excelled at over the years, the car crash that ended her racing career just as she was at the top of her game, and how she transitioned into coaching some of the top mountain bikers in the world. She also gives a few tips on how everyone can work on their technical skills no matter where they live and discusses another new chapter in her career. You can find out more about Anneke's skills coaching here: https://www.crankitupmtb.comInstagram: @withpacepodYouTube: Payson McElveen

Today on the podcast, I got to hang out with Dr. Ryan Darcy to dive into the intersection where neuroscience meets mountain biking. Ryan's a neuroscientist, president of NeuroCatch, and—like the rest of us—a stoked mountain biker. We chatted about everything from the science behind flow states, personal anecdotes from Ryan's riding experiences, and actionable advice on concussion protocols and brain health. Whether you're a weekend warrior or a pro rider, tune in to learn how to ride safer and sharper.Ryan also breaks down how NeuroCatch's portable brain scanner is changing the game when it comes to tracking cognitive function and boosting performance for riders. They recently partnered with Crankworx to prioritize brain health in Mountain Biking, and have also been working with none other than 5-time Downhill World Cup champion Aaron Gwin. This past August, the day after Micayla Gatto's 36th birthday, the freerider, filmmaker and artist was at a boatyard in Squamish. She was there to fix up the family's sailboat. Her goal is not only to get the craft seaworthy, but to use it to travel to new riding destinations—another chapter in the varied career of the rider-Renaissance woman. In the 2000s, Gatto competed in downhill, earning national championship titles. After a bad crash in 2014, she stepped away from racing. In 2017, her video with IFHT, “Ferda Girls”—a parody of Kendrick Lamar's “Humble” that critiqued the sexism and the challenges women face in mountain biking—won Crankworx's Dirt Diaries. The video remains a landmark in Gatto's career. Today, Gatto, a YT Mob member, continues to ride big lines and is an alternate for this fall's edition of Red Bull Rampage, which will include women riders for the first time.Another first in 2024 is the FMBA Slopestyle World Championships for women. Can Gatto connect her riding and activism to progress in the sport such as that? She is maybe a bit humble, and mixes her analysis with humour. “I mean, I've had a couple of people name their babies after me,” she says in this episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast. “So, I've got to be doing something right. (Or I just have a cool name.)”Find out more in this wide ranging interview with Gatto that also looks at another one of her pursuits, the art of tattooing, and how it is connected with mountain biking. Also in this episode is Derek Gee. The rider from Osgoode, Ont., won a stage at this year's Critérium du Dauphiné, held the leader's jersey for a stage and finished third overall. Later in the summer, he rode to an impressive ninth at the Tour France. He looks ahead to the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal. Editors Matthew Pioro and Matt Hansen look further at the WorldTour races set to run in a little more than a week. Big names are on their way to Canada.

Filmmaker and photographer Kelsey Toevs joined us to discuss what it was like winning Crankworx Dirt Diairies 2023, how she met her pro mountain biker husband Steve Vanderhoek, photographing $40 million homes and more.
"The fear is always there but it depends how much you tune into it and how much you listen to it.”Swedish mountain biker Emil Johansson might be the most successful slopestyle rider in the history of his sport but, as he reveals in this episode of Mind Set Win, fear is still an emotion he experiences every time he puts his helmet on. To launch his bike off staggering jumps and perform innovative tricks, the three-time Triple Crown of Slopestyle winner explains how trusting in his ability and not second guessing his decisions are the foundation of his winning mindset and the key to his dominance on the track. Hosts Cédric and York explore how Emil is able to think rationally in key moments and provide a step-by-step plan to help us all train to become more courageous in daily life. The exercise involves frequently putting yourself in uncomfortable situations and challenging yourself to be rational in trying to understand where your fear is coming from and why you're feeling it. Regardless, when being your own coach, don't be disheartened by failure because, as Emil says, you build your courage and self-belief through trial and error. Harriet and Robin are two of the current and future stars of freeride – and they also happen to be best friends. Harriet was on-track to become a BMX Olympian before deciding that her heart lay in freeride, while Robin went from a full-time career in the army to become the first woman to land a back-flip in competition in 2021.Yet the duo don't see themselves as trailblazers – they just see themselves as bike riders. Despite their modesty, Harriet and Robin are part of a wave of women freeriders bringing more and more awareness to female freeride and inspiring the next generation of female talent to come through and take the sport up at a younger age.Freeride is a mountain bike discipline encompassing almost every element of mountain biking you can imagine: speed, style, jumps, drops and so much more. Robin and Haz are the sport's biggest fans – and they just so happen to be two of the best in the world at tackling it, too.Rob and Eliot sat down with Harriet and Robin in Whistler at Crankworx, a multi-stop series of mountain bike festivals which brings together the best mountain bikers to compete in elite level competitions, to dive into their back stories, discuss what's next for them and the sport and dig into their friendship on and off the bike.Enjoying Just Ride? Eliot Jackson is a man that wears many hats in the bike industry. Whether it's racing, running the grow foundation or commentating on downhill - he certainly keeps himself busy. We caught up with him in Whistler during Crankworx.
What happens when you realise the thing that has given you purpose and identity in life is no longer making you happy? That was a question that slopestyle icon Brett Rheeder had to contend with in 2019, as he first started to wonder about retiring from competition. Three years later he roared back to win Red Bull Rampage, an iconic freeride mountain biking competition held in the Utah desert, for the second time with a whole new mindset – and then finally stepped away from competing for good.Brett is regarded as one of the greatest slopestyle riders in mountain biking, a discipline where riders fly through the air, spinning their bikes and bodies in multiple directions with the aim of accumulating the highest points for their trick combinations in each run.Speaking to Rob and Eliot in Whistler at Crankworx – a multi-stop series of mountain bike festivals which brings together the best mountain bikers to compete in elite level competitions – Brett's honesty and openness about the personal journey he's been on over the past few years is fascinating… and lots of fun. From his eye-opening first competitions on the pro scene – including a spot of concussion mixed with altitude sickness – to becoming arguably the greatest slopestyle rider of all time, Brett's been on one hell of a journey.Enjoying Just Ride? Presented by Pro Taper The first of two off-weekends has passed and a lot was still going on for the SML staff; ARay had his bachelor party in Havasu and Chase and Donn headed to Whistler, B.C. for Crankworx with the King of Supercross. We had a nice bench-racing session about the newest rumors floating around, what to look for at Loretta Lynns next weekend, and more!
There are many parralells between success in sport and success in business. Dedication, commitment, hard work, ability to get back up after a fall and many more! Today's guest has built on his trade skills (no pun intended, he's a sparky!) and turned pro mountain biker seemingly overnight. What people don't see though is the 10+ years Mike has put in to his sport, mindset and self development that's recently won him a Crankworx gold medal!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tom Isted has just set the World Record for the longest dirt-to-dirt backflip on a MTB at 120 feet at Darkfest. He currently does not have a bike sponsor which is crazy to say. Tom switched from BMX to MTB. He is a top Slopestyle rider earning his best result at Crankworx with a 3rd spot. He is fast becoming one of the riders pushing the sport of freeride as well. Freeride mountain biker Geoff Gulevich joined us to discuss competing in events like Crankworx and Red Bull Rampages, the challenges of being a MTB contest judge and how he broke his femur and nearly died while skiing recently.
We sat down with Vitor Büchli to talk about his recent fiesta of Freeride events, the Home- Land edit that just launched and his path to becoming a full-time rider. After having completed his vocational training in the summer of '22, Vitor embarked on a wild series of events that quite literally took him around the world: from Flat Out Days in Slovenia to Huckfest in Norway and from Crankworx in Whistler all the way to Freeride Fiesta in Mexico. It was interesting to hear Vitor's perspective on the events and the ups & downs of travelling the international freeride circus and we get an inside view of how his life and preparation have changed ever since he is focussing on his riding full time. Vitor also used the recent trip overseas to visit and explore his hometown of São Paolo in Brazil with his bike and we got to relive some of the experiences and impressions of the local riding scene. The trip was also documented in the Home-Land edit and that is out on Youtube now!

Marcelo Gutierrez is the most successful Downhill Mountain Biker in Colombia. It was not an easy road out of Colombia onto the world stage. Marcelo managed to get multiple World Cup podiums and become the king of the most grueling downhill race known as Garbonza Downhill at the Crankworx festival. Winning at the highest level for Marcelo was not quite enough. He lost his passion for the sport and competiting knowing there was more to life. After 12 years on the circuit, he has chosen to step away and is building cycling and mountain biking in South America as an ambassador for brands. He still competes at some select events.
