Mary welcomes back Kyle and Flynn to talk about the nuances of how we process information - at the biblical level. Every day, we are processing probably more info than most people ever did in a lifetime in previous generations. We listen to preachers, podcasts, YouTubes, and we read volumes some days. Are we really listening critically? What about pre-texts and presumptions? We all bring with us various biases, experiences, flaws and flesh. But the Bible is unique, isn't it? Don't we want a firm foundation? Are we even concerned about said biases and preconceptions, in that they can cause a cracked foundation? We talk about all the ways that we can "watch our life and doctrine closely" so as not to ruin the hearers, but help them see the truth. A high calling indeed. Apologists, authors, podcasters - Kyle and Flynn are perfect for dissecting this subject and seeing what we can take away from how we hear, read, and process profound truth.

Mike Evans and Brandon Stokley open the second hour with Mark Schlereth with Mark calling out Stokley's take to end the first hour. Do guards in the NFL have it easier because they have backup or do receivers have it easier with all of the moving parts to help them get open? Dre Greenlaw was seen practicing yesterday, but is it unreasonable to expect him back so soon? With the recent injury of back up tackle Matt Peart what do the Broncos have in reserve to work up front? Do we give any slack to Peart’s poor play now that we know he was playing while hurt? Should the Broncos offense go more up tempo? Could Sean be avoiding the tempo change to keep more control of his offense? We enter four down territory to close out the hour.
Mike Evans and Brandon Stokley open the second hour with Mark Schlereth giving a tearful apology to Matt Peart for criticizing him when Peart was playing hurt. The Drive had some criticism for Sean Payton’s decision not to take the bye week this week, but the guys beg to differ. Stink and Stoke explain why the later bye is a good thing. The guys debate the efficacy of white noise for sleep before they dig into some controversial WR’s the Broncos could bring in to help kick start the offense.

We're doing a crossover episode with Grandad and Mr Tech for this instalment in Creepy Spooky Month! Horror is very much the name of the game(-to-film-adaptation) this week. Together, we dive deep into Silent Hill (2006), directed by Christophe Gans, followed by Sweet Home (1989), directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Be ready for some computer game talk too, as we discuss the relative merits of the games that these films are based on. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Silent Hill by skipping ahead to the 1:57:15 mark, and for Sweet Home by skipping ahead to 2:39:04. In a move the music world did not see coming, Canadian music legends RUSH are touring again! German-born musician Anika Nilles will be honoring the late Neil Peart, drumming alongside Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. Also discussed in this episode of Hardly Focused: Jack and Becky attend a taping of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and almost blow Conan O'Brien's cover! [Original airdate: 9/6/24] On today's podcast we chat with Chris Quintana, Kyle Peart and Flynn Huseby live in the studio. Up for discussion is the urgency of the gospel and bringing hope to as many as possible while the church is still able to speak clearly and uncompromisingly. Two things that await every human are death and standing before God. One hundred years from now, all that will be important is, who is in heaven with us? While there may come a time when we can no longer communicate the truth openly, our neighbors and friends need to hear. Kyle and Flynn have a heart for the lost and through their ministry, Once Lost Ministries, they contend for the faith with clarity and zeal. Then we look at Israel and the latest headlines there with Chris who has a thorough understanding of Israel and her place in prophecy.

Chaz & Schatz welcome Vince Tricarico & Burke Hunn of The Rush Experience — a RUSH tribute trio so faithful it could fool Lorne into coming out of retirement and rigging up the drums, and trick Howard into running the light show. Vince found RUSH after Bonham's passing, adopted Zeppelin & Rush as his life's soundtrack, fell into the tribute scene, and spent years searching for the perfect trio. Burke was a Zeppelin/Aerosmith guy until a friend dropped the RUSH bomb, leading him straight to a Hemispheres vinyl and a lifelong tone-chase. Together with bassist/keyboardist Dave Kidd, they recreate every era of RUSH — from the first record to the last — with scary accuracy, enthusiasm, and musicianship that lets you relive it all again. They swap stories about monster drum rigs, Alex Lifeson guitar wizardry, load-in nightmares, backstage hangs with Jack Secret, and setlist alchemy that balances fan favorites with deep cuts. Spring 2025 Season Finale Host Ted Asregadoo closes out the spring season by shining a spotlight on the most essential—yet often overlooked—members of any great band: the drummers. Reuniting with John Young (John was a co-host during the first year of Planet LP's existence in 2021), this episode serves as both a musical celebration and a reminder that creativity and joy persist even in the darkest of times. Or, to quote Sting, "When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around." Rhythm Masters Featured:

Send us a textRush's "Power Windows" marks its 40th anniversary this year, and its examination of different forms of power resonates more strongly than ever in our complex world. This groundbreaking 1985 album showcases the band's evolution toward a synthesizer-rich sound while maintaining their trademark technical brilliance and thought-provoking lyrics.Diving into this highly underrated gem from Rush's discography, we explore how each track examines a different manifestation of power. "Big Money" dissects economic influence, "Territories" critiques nationalism and tribalism, "Manhattan Project" provides a poetic account of nuclear development, and "Marathon" uses running as a metaphor for personal willpower and endurance. The album's title cleverly references both the luxury car feature of the era and the thematic window into various power dynamics that shape our lives. What makes this album truly special is Neil Peart's lyrical brilliance. His sophisticated yet accessible writing creates a timeless quality that transcends the 1980s production. Though some Rush purists were initially resistant to the synthesizer-heavy direction, time has revealed the depth and prescience of these compositions. Learning that Peart crafted these profound lyrics at "a desk the size for a five-year-old" while researching historical events adds another layer of fascination to this conceptual masterpiece.Whether you're a longtime Rush fan or discovering their music for the first time, "Power Windows" offers remarkable insights into human nature and social structures that remain strikingly relevant four decades later. Join us as we celebrate this anniversary by sharing our personal connections to these songs and exploring why they continue to resonate in an increasingly divided world. Which form of power speaks most directly to your experience?Support the show

Mary welcomes back Kyle Peart and Flynn Huseby of Once Lost Ministries to discuss a foundational Bible topic: sound doctrine. What is it? Why is it so important? If doctrine is simply defined as instruction, and in the last days Paul tells us that people will have no taste for it ("will not endure...") then what does that say about the church in these times? That church-goers will not be teachable. And that is very true unfortunately; deriding doctrine is the skill of cults and false systems. Sad to say, if a person believes they are in the faith but refuses the truth of non-negotiable doctrine, there is no good news for them. We will talk about the divisive nature of truth as found in doctrine, and we also look at doctrines of devils; also how sound doctrine unites true believers. Doctrine by its very nature requires application, and it changes us from the inside out. Unless we do not endure it! A full hour with Kyle and Flynn. Be sure to check out their YouTube page. Picture this: It's a crisp January morning in 1980. The new decade is fresh, brimming with possibility, and you're flipping through the racks at your favorite record store. Disco is slipping out of fashion, punk's rebellious roar still echoes, and the New Wave is gathering momentum. Amidst all this change, Rush—a band known for their sprawling progressive rock epics—is about to redefine themselves. The moment you unwrap Permanent Waves and place the needle down, something shifts. The opening notes of “The Spirit of Radio”cut through the speakers like a beacon for the new era. You're swept into a world where Rush balances complexity with accessibility, progressive rock with mainstream ambition. The album was a turning point for a band about to define their legacy.A Balancing Act Between Complexity and AccessibilityPermanent Waves, recorded at the now-legendary Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec, marked the beginning of Rush's iconic 80s run. With Terry Brown returning as producer, the album showcased a deliberate pivot. Gone were the sprawling epics of Hemispheres (1978). In their place were tightly constructed, thematically sharp tracks that leaned into shorter runtimes while still showcasing the band's virtuosity .This album reached number four on the U.S. Billboard 200 and number three in Canada, earning gold and platinum certifications. Not only was it a commercial success, but it also marked the first time the band broke even on a tour, thanks to nine months on the road supporting the record .A Showcase of Rush's EvolutionThe album opens with “The Spirit of Radio”, an anthem to music's transformative power. Lifeson's shimmering guitar riff, Peart's intricate drumming, and Lee's powerful vocals meld into a track that bridges progressive rock and radio-friendly melodies. Its unexpected reggae breakdown was a bold experiment, cementing the song's status as a classic.“Free Will”, the second single, explores existentialism with blistering technical interplay between guitar and bass. Meanwhile, deeper cuts like “Jacob's Ladder” unfold like a storm—a dark, atmospheric journey that builds into an otherworldly crescendo.A surprising inclusion as a single was “Entre Nous”, released in April 1980. Despite its relatively low profile in Rush's live sets, it encapsulates the album's lyrical intimacy, proving that even Rush's quieter moments pack a punch .Is Rush Metal? The Permanent Waves episode of Dig Me Out reignited the perennial debate: Is Rush a metal band? While their technical prowess and influence on the genre are undisputed, Rush has always been more at home in progressive rock. However, their heavier tracks, like those from 2112 and even moments on Permanent Waves, ensured they earned respect among metal fans and artists alike .Why Permanent Waves Still ResonatesWith its release, Permanent Waves wasn't just another Rush album; it was a declaration of intent. The band embraced the future while honoring their past, delivering an album that remains a cornerstone of progressive rock. Decades later, it's still finding new fans and delighting old ones. As a Dig Me Out listener said: “This album has grown with me. I've owned it on every format, and it never gets old” .Dust off your vinyl or pull it up on your favorite streaming platform—Rush's Permanent Waves deserves a fresh listen. If this record still gives you chills or you're discovering it for the first time, let us know. [Original airdate: 6/28/24] We welcome back Kyle Peart and Flynn Huseby of Once Lost Ministries, apologists and evangelists who work tirelessly to bring truth and clarity to those caught up in false teaching. Today we discuss the Catholic faith and the various aspects that are unscriptural: Tradition, relics, sacraments, purgatory, and veneration of Mary. With all the religious aspects, extra-biblical focus and gospel of good works, how is it that a Catholic can never be assured of salvation? There is a lot of busy-ness, as in all religions, but none of it ever seems to produce the fruit of repentance and a biblical understanding of the new birth. We also discuss the ecumenical bent that has long been part of this huge denomination but we have to ask ourselves, to what end? Dominionism, or something more sneaky - the desire to bring all Protestants "home to Rome". A thoughtful discussion that will hopefully open eyes to the vanity of religiousity. As the author of a graphic history, I loved chatting with Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz and Paul Peart-Smith about the graphic interpretation of An Indigenous People's History of the United States (Beacon Press, 2024). An Indigenous Peoples' History of The United States originally came out in 2014 with Beacon Press. In 2019 it was adapted into a Young Peoples version by Jean Mendoza and Debbie Reese. In 2021 it was one of the three foundational texts for the amazing HBO docuseries Exterminate All the Brutes, written and directed by Raoul Peck. The other featured books were two of my all-time favorites Sven Lindqvist' Exterminate All the Brutes: One Man's Odyssey into the Heart of Darkness and the Origins of European Genocide and Michel-Rolph Trouillot's Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History. Paul Peart-Smith has adapted what many regard as the first history of the United States told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples into a stunningly powerful graphic history. Through evocative full color artwork, renowned cartoonist Paul Peart-Smith brings this watershed book to life, centering the perspective of the peoples displaced by Europeans and their white descendants to trace Indigenous perseverance over four centuries against policies intended to obliterate them. Dr. Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, a New York Times best-selling author, grew up in rural Oklahoma in a tenant farming family. She has been active in the international feminist and Indigenous movements for more than four decades and is known for her lifelong commitment to national and international social justice issues. Dunbar-Ortiz is the winner of the 2017 Lannan Cultural Freedom Prize, and is the author or editor of many books, including An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States, a recipient of the 2015 American Book Award. She lives in San Francisco and is a professor emeritus in Ethnic Studies at California State University, East Bay. Paul Peart-Smith is a celebrated cartoonist of over 35 years, with experience in concept art, graphic design, and animation. Having studied to be an illustrator in Cambridge, England, he has worked on comics for 2000 AD, such as Slaughter Bowl . He is the illustrator and adapter of W. E. B. Du Bois Souls of Black Folk: A Graphic Interpretation. He lives in Tasmania, Australia and puts out the bi-weekly newsletter InkSkull . Learn more about your ad choices. On today's podcast we chat with Chris Quintana, Kyle Peart and Flynn Huseby live in the studio. We are excited to share today's conversation with Sarah Schraeder with you! We are especially thankful she made time to share as she was 34 weeks pregnant at the time of the recording! This is a unique and miraculous testimony with lots of layers. Sarah and her husband Jared moved to Arizona two years ago from Washington state. Sarah loves being a stay-at-home mom but if you had told her even just five years ago that she would be doing that she would've laughed. At age 19 Sarah had been told that it would be difficult and most likely not possible for her to become pregnant, and she was actually okay with that. Sarah and Jared married in 2018 and spent the first few years of their marriage traveling and enjoying life without being tied down to anything specific. They were fully planning their future without kids. In April 2020 Sarah received a huge surprise - she found out she was pregnant. We appreciate Sarah's openness in describing her reaction and how she and her husband came to terms with this big change. When their son Peart was born 8 months later their whole world changed for the better. It is amazing to hear about the transformation of her heart. But this is only half of Sarah's story! The conversation flashes forward to the fall of 2023 when Sarah found a lump on her breast. She was only 28. The doctors had a very grim outlook telling her that it was a 95% chance that she had cancer as the growth was extremely rare. While Sarah was in the process of getting scanned and tested, she found out she was pregnant again. This time she and Jared were overjoyed even in the midst of this potential cancer diagnosis. Sarah describes it as the doctors almost didn't know what to do with her because she was so faith filled in a situation that for many would seem so bleak. She of course continued with her pregnancy while beginning to move forward with an oncology team. And then suddenly in March 2024 after months of tests and preparation the lump was undetectable. It was gone! Did God work a miraculous healing? As you listen you will be truly inspired by Sarah's faith. The way she articulates the trust and hope she has in the Lord is unlike any we've shared before. Be praying as Sarah and Jared prepare to welcome their second baby boy in July of this year!Would you please subscribe and leave us a review? This will help our podcast reach more people! We'd love it if you'd share this podcast with your friends on social media and beyond. Join us next Wednesday to hear another story of God's faithfulness!

Mary Danielsen chats with Kyle Peart and Flynn Huseby of Once Lost Ministries, which exists to boldly proclaim truth, both to those who are lost and for the local church to defend, encourage and exhort via the use of apologetics. Is the Seventh Day church solid? What is their history? Their view of Jesus? Evangelicals have long been confused by their doctrine; would they fail the test for a cult? What happened after cult expert Walter Martin tried to work with them to gain an evangelical footing? We will try and clarify what they believe and why it matters. They have a strong media presence and put on flashy prophecy conferences, but fail to identify themselves to those watching or attending. In the second half, we will discuss "in-house" apologetics - using solid doctrinal stances to help people navigate where their church is at - and unfortunately, often where it is going if the local church veers away from teaching doctrine to teaching the latest best-seller.
