Happy Spooky Wednesday, folks! It's opposite day at Left of Skeptic. First up, Kala talks about Jinny Bingham's ghost in Camden Town, London. Also known as Mother Damnable and Mother Redcap, Jinny was a 1600s woman who was known in her small village for witchcraft and murder! But was she really a witch, or just a woman with a whole lot of bad luck. Either way, it seems her misfortune carries into the present day, haunting the location where her cottage once stood. And Brittany gets midwesty by talking about two different locations in Battle Creek, Michigan. A haunted apartment complex called Colombia Court is dealing with more than your average pests. Residents can expect to deal with doors opening on their own, lights turning on and off, whispers and disembodied voices, footsteps, and flying cookware! And in a Battle Creek Cemetery, there is a statue that is definitely not the Virgin Mary, and locals claim that it cries. We finish the whole episode off with some Reddit stories from Wisconsinites that claim they've had their own paranormal encounters.  Editor's Note: Sadly, it looks like the Wonder Bar in Milwaukee closed last year. It's now theBiersal Tavern. Let us know if it's still haunted! But #FunFact it looks like the Wonder Bar in Madison might be haunted too >> https://archive.jsonline.com/features/travel/madisons-wonder-bar-steakhouse-has-mob-history-ghosts-b99380667z1-281121762.html

Cooper's is latest tavern in historic Beacon building Some soft opening. When word spread that the new incarnation of Dogwood in Beacon was ready for its close-up, the place attracted the curious, the familiar and local families. "We just low-key opened the door [Jan. 10] and within 20 minutes, the dining room filled up," said co-owner Brendan McAlpine. "Someone took a picture of the menu posted outside and it circulated pretty wide." After months of speculation, the fate of Dogwood, the funky bohemian bar on East Main Street that abruptly changed hands last summer, is now clear. The immediate future is Cooper's Bar, named for McAlpine's beloved French bulldog, who died a few years ago. A few photos of Cooper and a handful of historic shots adorn the streamlined, stripped down walls. "People worried that this would be a sports bar," said McAlpine, who, with his wife and partner Marjorie Tarter, owns Wonderbar, Hudson Marshmallow Co. and The Beacon movie theater, as well as The Bird & Bottle Inn in Philipstown. "Our only TV is at Cooper's. We'll show big games or events, but we're not putting on CNN or anything during the day." For now, the monitor is tuned to the fireplace channel. Wall coverings and live music will come as McAlpine "lets the space breathe," he said. "Instead of buying 75 pieces of art, it will grow organically." Sitting with pens, books and a computer, and wearing a Dogwood hoodie, author and photographer Ronnie Farley is glad the doors are open again. Except for the near-barren walls, most changes are subtle. New booths in the main room now seat six adults comfortably and are enjoyed by families in the early evenings. The building has served as a watering hole since the 1870s. Many ill-conceived additions to the kitchen, now gone, impeded the flow, said McAlpine. Remnants from Dogwood include a tap pouring Old Glenham Brewery hand-drawn cask ale, tiles with a dog bone in the center made by Hudson Beach Glass and the sound system above the stage, which is now filled with tables for diners. Christian Meixner, the chef at The Bird & Bottle Inn, devised the menu. The mostly fried sides go for $10 to $14. Other items range from $14 for three of the appetizers to $28 for a tuna rice bowl (although some of the salad add-ons can lift prices above $30). Asian influences include dumplings, a scallion pancake and the kimchi rice bowl. The kitchen also serves pinsas, an Italian flatbread with a crispy crust consisting of a lighter dough. McAlpine noted that Cooper's Bar is the latest incarnation of previous watering holes, which included Zep's, Annie Cabe's, Sunderland's Saloon, Papa Joe's and Dogwood. Old-timers tell him that the bar occupied the current music room in the 1990s and receipts from the 1930s shellacked to the wall by the bathrooms indicate that a half keg of Feigenspann beer cost $7.75. The one constant is change. "I've never seen a lot of our customers before and that wasn't the case 10 years ago," he said. "Going out in Beacon was like Cheers, but now there's lots of young kids and a great mix of older and younger folks who just moved here and people who've been here forever." Cooper's Bar, at 47 E. Main St., in Beacon, is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. The kitchen closes at 10 p.m. Call 845-440-7171 or visit coopersbeacon.com.

The Wonder Bar is a chocolate bar made from psychedelic magic mushrooms and infused with psilocybin. I will be taste testing the Wonder Bar, explaining some history of my past psychedelic experiences and comparing the Wonder Bar to those experiences (within reason, considering I'm only eating 4 of 12 squares!)The back of the bar reads:"The highest quality psilocybin chocolate bar on the market. Made by extracting the psilocybin from mushrooms. This allows for a much purer high, eliminating the upset stomach feeling users would get from digesting magic mushrooms. Our extraction technology completely puts the Wonder Bar in a league of its own, creating a product that is much safer, purer, free of any contaminants, and more accurately dosed.Psilocybin & magic mushrooms have been known to significantly reduce anxiety, stress and depression while increasing focus and stimulating brain cell growth."Please note, I am in no way recommending or encouraging the use of psychedelic magic mushrooms. We had the pleasure of interviewing Chris Mardini over Zoom video! Chris Mardini belongs to the rare breed of artists born to give voice to our most complex emotions. At just 19-years-old, the New York City-raised singer/songwriter has mastered the art of merging intense self-reflection with poetic social commentary—a dynamic made all the more potent by his innate talent for crafting spellbinding melodies. A near-lifelong musician who took up guitar at age 10 and got his start playing Beatles covers at iconic venues like The Bitter End, Mardini sets his soul-baring songwriting to a singular collision of elements: the brooding urgency of classic alt-rock, kinetic rhythms of underground hip-hop, and impassioned vocal work of timeless singer/songwriters like Jeff Buckley.Mardini discovered a love of seminal rock bands like Led Zeppelin as a child and later became obsessed with Nirvana, one of the most formative influences on his songwriting. After cutting his teeth playing covers at local spots like Arlene's Grocery—and occasionally venturing down to Asbury Park to perform at the legendary Wonder Bar—he started writing and self-producing his own material in his bedroom. With the arrival of his debut single “Retrospective Outlook” in September 2019, Mardini immediately proved the appeal of his unguarded honesty, and soon earned praise from outlets like Popdose (who noted that “the ghosts of Nirvana, Odelay-era Beck, and mid-decade hip-hop haunt his music”).In the making of his debut album, Mardini joined forces with Grammy Award-winning producer Marc Swersky and recorded at New Jersey's Sound on Sound Studios with a lineup of veteran musicians, infusing each track with the same volatile energy of his mosh-heavy live set. Viscerally charged but intricately detailed, the album's galvanizing alt-rock fuses perfectly with Mardini's exploration of alienation and insecurity, self-sabotage and social pressure. In all of his output, Mardini showcases the sophisticated musicianship he first began honing as a kid growing up in the West Village. By channeling so much raw vulnerability into his songs, Mardini has ultimately found his way to a glorious catharsis that's palpable in every track he shares with the world. And while his lyrics often speak to the pain of isolation, he hopes his music might leave others with a powerful sense of understanding and connection. We want to hear from you! Patrick Fasano has over forty years of real estate development experience. It all started in 1974 while he was working at his first restaurant job in New Brunswick. With the savings he earned, Patrick began buying boarded up houses and renovating them. He even rented these single and multi-family homes to the staff that worked alongside him in the restaurant. The owners of the restaurant eventually invested in Mr. Fasano to begin his first business, Reliable Properties. What followed were many successful development projects across the US. Fast forward to 1998 when Pat acquired his first building in Asbury Park on Bangs Avenue. The first floor of this building he donated to the gay & lesbian community, and the 2nd floor was converted into apartments to provide housing for his contracting employees as they began rehabbing more buildings throughout the beachfront city. Over the past 15+ years Mr. Fasano has focused on developments in Asbury Park. In the past decade he built over two hundred condominium units for sale with a market value of over $50 million. Additionally he built a number of commercial spaces and restaurants such as Brando’s, The Asbury Lanes, The Wonder Bar, Plaza Tapatia, The Bond Street Complex, and Passion as well as 12 storefronts on Cookman & Mattison Avenue. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Pat for a live podcast and walking tour of his latest passion location, Atlantic City. Pat literally shouted his love for this City from the streets as we toured his development on the New York Avenue portion of the Orange Loop, home to Bourre, a New Orleans style restaurant, the home of a shipping container style hotel with 40 rooms, and a CBD dispensary along with 12 apartment units that were currently under construction. Pat has a contagious passion for his projects, which is evident in this quick interview. Perhaps most interesting in this episode is Pat's response to the question about the approval process in Atlantic City with respect to his extensive plan on New York Ave. Be on the look out for Part 2 as we look to sit down with Pat in the studio for a more extensive conversation soon!

What happens when a company leaves a company town? We talk to an ethnographer who charts the story of a New Hampshire paper mill that closed, leaving hard feelings and few jobs behind. We also track water quality in two New England Bays, and examine the source of some of our water pollution problems — the lightly regulated residential septic system. Finally, we visit a Boston laboratory for creating new beats. Dryers on the Number 3 paper machine at the now-demolished paper mill in Groveton, Nh. From a 1955 Vanity Fair sales catalog. (Courtesy GREAT) State of the Bays Bangs Island Mussels worker Jon Gorman sets juvenile mussells onto rope that will be their home for the next year as they grow to market size. (Fred Bever/ Maine Public) When it comes to water quality, there's a lot that scientists have to monitor. Pollution, invasive species, and climate change are just a few of their concerns. And these problems are often linked together, so it can be hard to pinpoint the cause of unhealthy waterways. We go first to Maine's Casco Bay, where a new threat to New England’s shellfish industry seems to be establishing itself more firmly. Regulators are trying to stay ahead of potentially deadly blooms of toxic algae — blooms that may be driven by climate change. An unprecedented bloom in Casco Bay recently forced regulators to close off a large area to shellfish harvesting. Maine Public Radio's Fred Bever reports. New Hampshire’s Great Bay. (Annie Ropeik/NHPR) “Did you ever know anybody who looked really good, like, physically you just look at him or her and say, ‘Wow, they’re in real shape,’ and then you find out they’re struggling with a tough health problem? That’s our bay. Look how beautiful it is, right? Doesn’t it look great? Under the surface, there’s some issues.” – Kalle Matso, Coastal Science Program Manager, University of New Hampshire New Hampshire’s Great Bay and its estuary have suffered from nitrogen loading and other problems for years. And the latest data doesn’t show much improvement. But scientists say there’s still hope for the watershed.  As New Hampshire Public Radio’s Annie Ropeik reports, they’re trying to hone in on things people can control. Septic system installation underway for a home on steep slopes. (Soil Science/Flickr) But New England is an especially difficult place to control the flow of nitrogen.  That’s because half of homes here rely on septic systems — the highest proportion in the country. For decades, most conventional septic systems have done well removing pollutants and pathogens. But they’re not very good at removing nitrogen, which is in human waste. And too much nitrogen can wreak havoc on coastal ecosystems. As New England Public Radio’s Jill Kaufman reports, recent research indicates even the best septic equipment won’t do the job, if it’s ignored. Post-Industrial In a recent episode, we shared a series of stories from NHPR about the surge in off-road vehicle recreation in New Hampshire's woodsy North Country. State and local tourism officials there have made efforts to draw ATV riders to the area in hopes of boosting the economy — after the closure of paper mills that provided a livelihood for so many. Meanwhile, communities in northern Vermont and Maine are also trying to figure out an economic future without the paper industry. A new book, You Had a Job for Life: Story of a Company Town, chronicles the history of a mill that sustained the town of Groveton, New Hampshire through the 20th Century, and closed for good in 2007. The memories of the mill's workers and managers drive the narrative. Author Jamie Sayen is a writer and environmentalist who calls the North Country home. We’re also joined by Joan Breault, who worked at the Groveton mill for 43 years. Sharing Skis and Beats Rory Gawler stands in a storage room of a Lebanon, Nh. house he bought in a foreclosure sale. Without electricity, he uses a flashlight to illuminate the hundreds of skis he found inside. (Britta Greene/NHPR) This weekend's big snowstorm is good news for New England skiers. In New Hampshire, one man recently stumbled across an appropriately timed, ski-season mystery in the remains of an old, falling down house. NHPR's Britta Greene went to investigate. (Plus, the Valley News covered the story’s ending.)  We finish off the episode with some sounds from Boston, where hip-hop producers are getting out of their bedroom studios, where they've got all the equipment to create their own beats — .but none of the community they need to make them better. I’m learning a lot from my own podcast!   While making the Kitty Hideaway, I used the speed square quite a bit. After watching some of Cody’s YouTube videos, I now know that I need to order a Swanson Speed Square       This is my favorite self centering tape measure  that I keep in the kitchen island craft station. Be sure to watch Cody’s Tape measure YouTube Video, where he recommends the Stanley FatMax tape measure.     I use this adjustable combination square on so many re-builds. I am math challenged for sure, so whenever I need an exact measurement over and over again, I dial it in and I know I’m good—just like I did when I trimmed out the kitchen cabinets and when I made this repurposed dresser into a media center.          I mentioned in the podcast that I’ve only framed one wall, that being my DIY portable wall that I use for staging my projects.

Our Man in Havana may have been compromised during the making of this episode. Partially inspired by his time in MI6 and set in late 1950's (pre-revolution) Cuba, Graham Greene's classic novel follows the daily maneuverings of vacuum salesman/secret agent Wormold, shortly after his unwitting recruitment in the men's room of the Wonder Bar. He initially invents his sources (taking names from a country club roster) as well as the information they provide to satisfy his superiors in London. But when he sends them sketches of vacuum cleaner parts suggested to be military installations in the mountains, he is pulled into a dangerous web of very real intrigue. Part spy novel, part comedic satire, this Graham Greene classic easily fits in the company of "The Big Lebowski" and "The Long Goodbye" and comes highly recommended for your Sunday read. After starting out with some excellent intro music (Sparks is da man!), Warren introduces this week's Urban Legend. This is an update of an earlier episode (Linda's Favourite Hiding Spot), in which Warren had described the invention of the dildo. Turns out the true origin of the DILbertDOugh is in fact botanical, but this time it involves witchcraft and the, ahem, vaginal "administration" of "flying ointment". (I'm not sure which set of quotation marks is more important, so I'm leaving both in.) Anyway, this is why witches are associated with broomsticks. See? All of a sudden the sexy-witch costumes at Hallowe'en take on a whole new dimension. And wait till you hear about why they hand out Hallowe'en chocolate bars! Absolutely filthy. If you have any stories of hypoglycemic intrusions to pass along, send us an email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
