We're joined by Freeride World Tour CEO Nicolas Hale-Woods to discuss the big stories of the season, starting with the much-celebrated return of the FWT to Alaska. We also get his take on the loss of the Kicking Horse stop and how that's not the end of the partnership. Nicolas gives us some clarity into the differing Region 1 and 2 Challenger formats, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the tour is developing its pipeline of future talent. To round out the conversation, Nico lays out the format for the upcoming, and inaugural, World Championships and how riders are qualified. 0:00 Welcome Nicolas 00:12 Surefoot 3:20 - FWT Returns to Alaska  6:00 - Kicking Horse  12:08 - 2 Different Challenger Formats  25:50 - World Championships Watch This Episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Khl-3nVXWPU ---- * The Freeride Guide is Supported By*    Surefoot Custom Ski Boots - Ski the Surefoot Difference  ---- WE HAVE MERCH!! We saw some spectacular performances as well as some heartbreaking moments on the way to crowning 3 new World Champions as well as 4 first time winners in Verbier. The Legendary Bec des Rosses presented an extra challenge in the way of a very thin and dangerous snowpack which is something the athletes have been familiar with this year. It wasn't safe to drop in from the top this year so the riders had to choose from 3 separate start gates on the Bec and Petit Bec. 00:00 - Intro / Surefoot 13:23 - SNOWBOARD MEN 24:45 - SKI MEN  47:54 - SKI WOMEN 1:03:17 - BACKSLAP | Fan Emails ** 1:14:00 - SNOWBOARD WOMEN  Watch This Episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/YJ_Bw-_DZso ** Lily Bradley LPP Interview -  https://open.spotify.com/episode/1lDG1CFKsJLTI7zPQolfmk?si=404499794e3e4296 ---- WE HAVE MERCH!! This is the FULL event RECAP for the fifth event of the 2025 Freeride World Tour season at Fieberbrunn Austria which was the final event before The Cut. We saw some spectacular clutch performances which propelled some riders above the cut line and disappointing runs that dropped some below. Due to challenging snow conditions, only 3 of the 4 categories were able to compete. The FWT deemed the Wildseeloder face unable to accommodate the full roster riders and postponed the Ski Men. Ultimately after assessing the weather over the week to come, the Ski Men's event was cancelled leaving the current rankings to determine the cut riders.  00:00 Intro / Surefoot 00:29 - SKI MEN Competition Cancelled 19:22 - SKI WOMEN 31:00 - Cut Dynamics / Challenger Series 40:23 - SNOWBOARD WOMEN  51:16 - SNOWBOARD MEN Watch This Episode on YouTube:https://youtu.be/thKUjRjtZbI ---- * The Freeride Guide is Supported By*    Surefoot Skiing - Custom Ski Boots Insta360 4X Action Cam - Get a FREE Accessory w/ Code "lowpressure"   Skull Candy Headphones - 15% OFF w/ Code "WELCOME15"  --- Send us an email! Tell us your hot take and we might read it on the show. backslap@freerideguidepodcast.com - Join our Freeride Guide Podcast FUN BET League: https://peakperformance.pronosticgames.fr/tribe/fac0332d-6096-469c-8859-08dd35506ec2 Go to link above. Links:Filippo IGWebsiteSharing on social media is very much appreciated :)___________________________________Francesco's links: Instagram | Twitter | Strava | Website

In her rookie year on the 2023 Freeride World Tour, Molly's checkers or wreckers approach – skiing lines no other woman dare ski – landed her a 2nd place finish. Perfecting her art of the send at Kirkwood amidst its treacherous volcanic “death rocks”, Molly's fearless approach has inspired all skiers, regardless of gender. Equally inspiring is Molly's perseverance in the face of unimaginable loss, opening up about the accident that took her brother Sam's life just as she was finding closure after losing her best friend in a car accident. Molly talks about the therapeutic healing the outdoors brings her and also shares the story of losing her big toe to frostbite while skiing in Montana. Today's guest is Hedvig Wessel, a professional skier and the 2023 Freeride World Tour champion. Now, if you're not sure what freeride skiing is, it involves navigating the most challenging mountain terrain, and due to its dangerous nature, it's a sport for only the most highly skilled skiers. One wrong move could be fatal. What is incredible about Hedvig - and one of the reasons I was keen to invite her onto the show - is her general outlook on life: the approach she takes to following her passion and living her truth.   In our conversation, we cover so many different topics that - although discussed in the context of being a World Champion skier - I believe, have huge relevance for each and every one of us. We talk about conquering negative thoughts, how to manage anxiety, the importance of exploring our own personal limits, and how we can best overcome fear, and turn our struggles into growth.   Hedvig shares her inspiring journey to becoming world champion, and we discuss how pursuing our own passions can lead to a more meaningful and purposeful life. We explore the rituals Hedwig uses to prepare for competition, the importance of trusting our instincts in critical moments and how spending time in nature has shaped her perspective on life and death.   We also discuss why Hedwig chooses to work with an Ayurvedic health coach, why she has decided to stop competing despite being the reigning world champion, and she shares a powerful visualisation exercise that she uses to make difficult decisions. This conversation is a masterclass in purposeful living, following your passion, and the power of self-reflection. Hedvig's insights on pushing limits, overcoming fear, and living with intention will inspire you to approach your own challenges with renewed courage and clarity. The first snows have fallen. And if the local webcams have anything to say about it, it might as well be winter. Snow sliding and keeping bases intact—that's another story. The story today, on The High Route podcast comes from Salt Lake based Mali Noyes. Let's see where to begin.Catching up with Noyes is, and was, part of the problem. Not unlike many of us, she is busy. She is also on the move. Energy. Motion. Mountains. Running. Skinning. Skiing. Nursing. She grew up in Sun Valley, Idaho, and became part of a speedy crew of nordic racers at the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. Kilometer after kilometer, season after season, year after year, you can imagine the incredible base fitness. She went on to ski at the University of Utah and, once free from the constraints of school, took that drive and fitness into the backcountry. Noyes is an accomplished mountain runner, earned a spot on the Freeride World Tour in 2016, and is a Salomon athlete. After years in the mountains gaining experience, she has ventured into the Alaska Range and beyond. All the while, she took the time to attend nursing school. When she is not in the hills, she works as an oncology nurse. There's also something else to know—we don't really explore how she skied this or that line. Which, we think, is OK. We take the time on the podcast to get a little deeper and discuss things like how annoying it might be to answer questions like "What's it like to be the only girl on an expedition?" We also explore how Noyes expanded her avalanche education and now takes more ownership over assessing where and when she skis. All this is to say that we had an excellent time during the interview—we learned a ton.  If you are new to The High Route, we are a reader and listener-supported enterprise focusing on human-powered turn making. Our mission is simple, but it takes real deal calorie burning to piece it all together. We are also excited to announce Issue 1.0 of The High Route magazine is in the works. Fancy paper. Good reads. High-octane photos. And some fine mountain ranges. And turns. You can learn more about our subscription options here. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. Episode #19 (English). Guest: MC Dave Mailman : Master of the - Boardsports - Community Ex-Marketing Director Quiksilver Europe, ex-President Association of Surfing Professionals Europe, Journalist, Speaker, Voice Over Artist, Consultant Basically everyone in the Action Sports industry knows Dave Mailman. And that's no surprise: for over 20 years, he was the voice behind the biggest surfing and snowboarding events across the Old Continent and has commented hundreds of heats on the beach or on webcasts. Be that as it may, few actually know Dave's story in detail. It's the story of a young Californian with a passion for skateboarding and surfing, who took French lesson in high school. He then came to spend a summer on the Basque coast…but basically never left. It was the heyday of surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding and Dave was lucky enough to witness the founding moments of this movement. Having mastered the languages of both Tom Curren and Serge Vitelli, he penned articles in the snowboard magazine OnBoard. After a quick passage with Arnette, Dave arrived at Quiksilver to take over as Head of marketing for Europe. Dave tells us about this blossoming time when ideas (shootings, trips, events) overruled budgets. He is namely to thank for the now iconic Bowlriders contest in Marseille. He'll tell us all about how came about and his memories of that project. It will also give us a chance to hear how « The Mountain and the Wave » was able to infiltrate the core skate market, the missing puzzle piece in their catalog. For this 19th episode, Dave will also discuss the various subsequent steps of his career: 4 years as President of the ASP Europe, his work on the Freeride World Tour, the Verbier Extreme and even various editorial projects he's worked on since then (including podcasts!). Among many other subjects. A fascinating new episode on the history of our Action Sports industry, seen through the lens the most American of our European key players.

Enjoy the ride. Recorded in the MACS premises in St Vincent de Tyrosse on January 25th 2024. Editorial production: EuroSIMA Animation: Romain Ferrand / Rémi Chaussemiche

After 6 years of listening, I've finally taken the decision to take the train to the Alps and am very much looking forward to it."  Episode 204 about Vail Resorts prompted a LOT of feedback: Simon Burgess: "Really enjoyed the last episode on the Epic Pass. As someone who has used it a lot it's exciting what's on offer and what could develop. I still think some of the partner agreements are a rip off with special lodging needed to get a pass, but for Andermatt, 3 Valleys and the Dolomites it's been brilliant. It was fantastic in Andermatt: show the Epic Pass and they give you a season pass which I'm pretty sure is sold for more” Andrew Brannan: "Eye watering ticket prices, all the top management jobs taken out of resort, all teh restaurants and hotels, shops and even estate agents bought up by the same monopoly, aggressive property development, workers forced to live down the valley" Chris Howie: "It feels as if Vail Resorts are trying to wring every last penny out of resorts while providing the very minimum in return. In most of the Vail Resorts-owned resorts prices have gone sky high so only the rich can ski. Ski passes are almost three times the price of a European ski resort. Lift lines are unbelievably long. The local staff are removed to bring in centralised American staff, ripping the heart out of the resort. I will do my best to never ski at a resort owned by the Vail Resort organisation" Jane Henderson: “You should've given him a bit of a grilling on the negative impact of Epic/Ikon passes” If you like the podcast, there are three things you can do to help:   1) Review us on Apple Podcasts or Spotify 2) Subscribe 3) Book your ski hire with Intersport Rent using the code ‘SKIPODCAST' or simply take this link for your discount to be automatically applied at the checkout   You can follow Iain @skipedia and the podcast @theskipodcast
