We've got all the rest of the news from across the county, and all the usual chat and nonsense, including Valentine's Day, Unforgotten, Big Boys, a good old-fashioned foul-mouthed rant and loads more besides. Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHThe episode kicks off with some narration, setting up the magic of the holiday season and how we're all hoping for the perfect Christmas… but it never quite works out that way.We meet Chuck, who hires a bucket lifter to get his Christmas decorations as high as possible. He doesn't care what his neighbors think—especially his next-door neighbor, Manny, who seems to have some beef with Chuck, despite their kids dating. Then there's Jennifer, who is stressed because her mom, Linda, is dating a younger man and bringing him home for the holidays. Jennifer's dad, Robert, is coming too, but Linda hasn't told him about her new boyfriend.Josh Hill comes home for Christmas before his move to Sydney. He buys his parents tech gadgets, but they don't use them.Ted and Marcus arrive to celebrate their engagement with Ted's family this Christmas, and Ted's mom is PUMPED.We also meet two teenagers, Max and Annie. They're best friends working on a gift drive, but when cool girl Stephanie shows up, Max is clearly smitten, which bums Annie out. She talks to her mom, Lucy, about it, who just offers her a candy cane. Lucy runs a bakery, and a hunk named Cole comes in to do some handiwork. Sparks are flying. Lucy's sister, Sylvie, is also coming to spend Christmas with her for the first time in years, and Sylvie is a lot.Josh gets pulled over by Detective Nora Jacobs, whom he recognizes from school. It's clear they never really got along. She gives him a ticket, much to his surprise.Meanwhile, Manny and his wife are so excited that their daughter, Gaby, is home for Christmas! She has big news—she may be getting her own cooking show! But the joy doesn't last long when she finds out her brother, Kevin, is dating their next-door neighbor, Katie, who used to torment Gaby as a kid.Josh complains about the ticket, but his parents tell him that Nora is actually pretty awesome. Her husband passed away, and now she's raising their kid on her own. Josh starts to feel a little bad.Ted and Marcus are talking wedding plans when Ted brings up his grandma as a potential problem. Everyone skirts around the issue until Ted admits: his grandma doesn't know he's gay. Marcus is shocked and doesn't understand why Ted hasn't told her. They're even more surprised to find out she's coming for Christmas, despite planning a spa trip to Florida. When she meets Marcus, Ted introduces him as “his friend.”Clark and his wife, Rebecca, show up at his family's house. Clark's dad is Chuck, the Christmas light guy. Their large family immediately gives them grief for deciding to go vegan this year.Josh goes to pay his ticket and meets Nora's kid, who teaches him how to properly structure his Legos.Gaby and her family head to their annual karaoke festival, which she loves. She's upset when Katie shows up, and things get worse when they both choose the same song to perform. Everyone knows what that means… DUET! They crush it—until Katie accidentally hits Gaby in the face, causing her to fall off the stage. To top it all off, Gaby learns her parents are giving Katie her room because she's too tall for the couch.Later, Josh is in a rush to sign some papers and forgets to put his car in park. It rolls into a fire hydrant. Of course, Nora shows up and tells him this is pretty serious, and he'll have to go to court. Josh pleads, saying he's moving to Australia, so she gives him community service instead.Gaby is looking for a blanket when she finds an engagement ring in Kevin's pocket. She is not happy.Ted's grandma finds the wedding planning album and assumes Marcus is engaged… to Ella, Ted's sister. Now she's staying.Meanwhile, Chuck's wife, Connie, is tired of the family fighting, so she makes everyone sign a no-fighting agreement. Chuck agrees but insists they turn on the Christmas lights first. Predictably, it doesn't go well.

"All of your guys were around when four-strokes came out," said the AMA's Mike Burkeen in Thursday night's AMA Arenacross press conference. "The rules were made and it turns out they weren't very good. They basically killed off the two-strokes. Once it happened we couldn't put the genie back in the bottle. With the electric bikes we didn't want to go full-bore and then just cut it off if we find out it doesn't work. Because everyone has made purchasing decisions already, then we'll have all these guys that they bought under what they would say were bad pretenses. So we want to walk before we run, but we definitely want to run. What that looks like? Nobody knows?" Arenacross can serve as the testing ground to see where electric could fit, so a new stand-alone class for Stark Varg electric bikes has will fit into the Arenacross structure for 2024-2025. Have a listen to last night's press conference as the series explains the new class, and hear from riders like Josh Hill and Justin Bogle. Don't worry, the traditional AMA Arenacross class for 250s and 450s remains, with Kyle Peters trying to hold off riders like Ryan Breece and Vince Friese to notch a record sixth-straight championship. But in the Dash for Cash, it will be electric versus combustion! All the stars are here to talk about their prospects before tonight's season opener in Reno, Nevada. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Prioritization is probably the biggest challenge for ops teams. Say yes to everything—you pretty quickly become a service department. Set your own priorities without input from the business—you can quickly find yourself irrelevant, even out of a job.The best model that I've seen for tackling this problem is what we could call the product management approach to managing MarTech. This is where you effectively treat your stack as an internal product and ops as a product management team working on delivering features for internal customers. Today's guest has practiced this approach at enterprise scale, with an ops team dozens strong. Josh Hill shares his insights and lessons learned, as well as his journey as one of the earliest and well-recognized experts in the Marketo community. The Wheeler boys basketball team is no stranger to taking on some of the best high school programs in the country. Just this season, the number 1 Wildcats have already played Kimball High School from Texas, Columbus from Florida, Imhotep Charter School of Pennsylvania, Tampa Catholic, Centennial from Calif. and John Marshall from Virginia in various events. At home, Wheeler has already played defending Class 6A champion Grovetown, will see Number 10 Osborne twice in region play, Newton in a non-region game, and there is a chance Wheeler could meet up with Pebblebrook or McEachern in the playoffs. However, this weekend, Wheeler may be playing the most star-studded high school team in the United States — Sierra Canyon from the Los Angeles outskirts of Chatsworth, California. Wheeler will travel to Los Angeles to compete in The Chosen 1's Invitational, a high school showcase put on in conjunction by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Nike and NBA superstar LeBron James. The games will be played at the Galen Center on the campus of Southern California, the future basketball home of Wheeler five-star point guard Isaiah Collier and four-star forward Arrinten Page. Wheeler was contacted about playing in Saturday's game a couple of months ago. Camden from New Jersey, with the top recruit Dejuan Wagner, was supposed to play, but something happened and a space opened up. While Wheeler boasts the future Southern Cal duo, four-star guard Jelani Hamilton who is headed to Iowa State and three-star forward Josh Hill, it will face a team highlighted by four sons of NBA stars. Sierra Canyon features James' sons, Bronny and Bryce James, as well as Justin Pippen and Ashton Hardaway. Pippen is the son of Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, while Hardaway's father is former NBA star and current Memphis coach Penny Hardaway. The Trailblazers also feature five-star shooting guard Isaiah Elohim, four-star forward Bryce Cofield, three-star forward Noah Williams, three-star forward Jimmy Oladokun and JoJo Phillips, a three-star wide receiver on the Sierra Canyon football team who has signed with BYU. Hardaway has signed to play for his father at Memphis, while Oladokun has signed with San Diego. Of the remainder of the roster, Bronny James is the only other senior. The Wheeler-Sierra Canyon game, set for an 11 p.m. Eastern tip and streamed by the NFHS Network, is one of four on the schedule for The Chosen 1's Invitational. The event will also feature the boys and girls teams from St. Vincent-St. Mary's Catholic High School, LeBron James' alma mater in Akron, Ohio. A group of Cobb families that sued the Cobb County School District over its lack of certain COVID-19 protocols, such as a mask mandate, has won an appeal in federal court. The suit, first filed in October 2021, argued that Cobb School District's failure to follow guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention denied students with disabilities, medical conditions and respiratory ailments access to a safe, in-person learning environment. The plaintiffs are four unnamed Cobb students and their parents, and are represented by the Southern Poverty Law Center and two metro Atlanta law firms. The defendants are CCSD, Superintendent Chris Ragsdale and the school board's four Republicans. The students all have disabilities, such as muscular dystrophy, leukemia and respiratory conditions, and argued they are at risk of severe symptoms or death should they be infected with COVID-19. Adding to that risk, they argued, was the district's choice to loosen its COVID policies ahead of the 2021-2022 school year, including not requiring masks to be worn in schools. As such, the children were forced to opt into virtual learning courses, causing them “irreparable harm” and subjecting them to discrimination. The Southern Poverty Law Center argues the district violated the students' civil rights as enshrined by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The appeals court sent the case back to the district court, ordering it to “analyze whether virtual schooling is a reasonable accommodation for in-person schooling, not education in general.” Cobb schools did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Cobb's own Pebblebrook High School is one of two Atlanta-area high schools that will be featured in a prestigious marching band showcase in February. The HBCU All-Star Battle of the Bands will feature marching bands from four historically Black colleges and universities, as well as those from Pebblebrook and Westlake high schools. The event will take place Saturday, February 4 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Pebblebrook band's participation in the event will come just over a month after the Mighty Marching Machine traveled to New Orleans to perform at the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The HBCU All-Star Battle of the Bands, which has also partnered with Allstate for the event, will host a college fair at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta before the showcase, according to a news release. Forty-five different HBCUs from around the country will waive student application fees, accept applications on-site, and even offer opportunities for scholarships. High school students and recent graduates are invited to attend the college fair, averaging 7,000 attendees in past years, prior to the band performances from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on February 4. A familiar name in the Kennesaw dining scene is back, this time with a new restaurant offering a fresh take on Mexican and Southwestern cuisine. Bernardo's Modern-Mex, owned by Brett and Laura Olszeski, is now open in downtown Kennesaw. It takes the place of Trackside Grill, which the Olszeski family owned and operated for 20 years. A recent remodel brought Bernardo's to life in the former Trackside space. The new restaurant includes a spacious dining room and an indoor patio with a fireplace. A planned rooftop bar is supposed to open sometime in the spring. Bernardo's is a return to Brett Olszeski's roots in the restaurant industry, which he said was some time in the making. The "family" in this family business is also connected to the cuisine: Brett and wife Laura met in a Mexican restaurant. Bernardo's may sound familiar to another restaurant the Olszeski family owns and operates across the street: Bernie's Social Bar, which has been open in downtown Kennesaw for five years. Brett Olszeski explained that "Bernie" is a family name, and Bernardo a Spanish variation of the name: Brett's father was named Bernard, Brett's middle name is Bernard, and Brett's brother is named Bernie. Brett said Bernardo's is not your typical Tex-Mex. The restaurant's main culinary influences come not from Texas but from Mexico, Arizona and New Mexico. All of the food is fresh, and Brett says the restaurant hopes to serve as many as 40 different tequilas. As the clouds gave way to sunshine Wednesday afternoon, much of Cobb had dried up after heavy rain Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. However, the effects of the deluge were still felt in some parts of the county, notably Noonday Creek Park and East Cobb Park. Cobb County Parks announced late Wednesday morning the two parks would be “closed until further notice” because of flooding, though just before noon, it announced East Cobb Park would reopen at 1 p.m. The county had not announced a reopening timeline for Noonday Creek Park by 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, with the parking lot at the park that sits adjacent the creek still mostly flooded. Around 8:30 Wednesday morning, a county spokesperson told the MDJ the Cobb Department of Transportation was not working on any issues related to the storms that swept through the area Tuesday evening. Cobb DOT responded to four calls about flooding and one regarding a fallen tree, but those were cleared as of 8:30 a.m., according to the spokesperson. Cobb and nearly 50 other counties in Georgia were under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. Tuesday, as strong storms swept through the area after making their way across the Alabama-Georgia border. A flash flood warning was in effect for Cobb until noon Wednesday. The county postponed a test of its emergency outdoor sirens to Thursday as a result of the storms. Kennesaw State offensive coordinator Grant Chesnut will be hired as Navy football's new offensive coordinator, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation told The Capital on Monday. Newly-hired head coach Brian Newberry could not be reached for comment, while senior associate athletic director for sports information Scott Strasemeier said Navy was not prepared to make any announcements regarding assistant coaches at this time. Chesnut just completed his eighth season at Kennesaw State under head coach Brian Bohannon. The Owls ranked 10th in rushing offense in the Football Championship Subdivision this season, averaging 232.2 yards per game. Chesnut coached alongside Newberry for four seasons at Kennesaw State, while Newberry served as defensive coordinator. The two matched wits in practice on a daily basis. Both men worked under Bohannon, a disciple of former Navy and Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Kennesaw's downtown thronged with thousands Saturday afternoon as the city kicked off the holiday season with a parade down Main Street. The procession featured marching bands, twirlers, and floats from local bands, along with Santa Claus himself perched on the bed of a pickup truck. The parade also featured businesses, such as Whataburger, and the local Scout troops. Fred McGriff is finally a Hall of Famer. McGriff was voted in Sunday by the Contemporary Era committee, which was formed by the Hall to consider players who starred since 1980 and were not elected in the annual voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. McGriff, 59, hit 493 home runs during a 19-year controversy-free career that included 13 seasons of 27 or more homers, seven straight top-10 league MVP finishes and a World Series championship with the Atlanta Braves. He had two stints with his hometown Tampa Bay Rays, as well as time with the Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers. McGriff was elected unanimously by the 16-member committee. He was the only player elected from an eight-man ballot that also included Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling. During 10 years on the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot, McGriff never came close to the 75% threshold needed for election, surpassing 24 percent only in 2019, his final year of eligibility, when he got to 39.8. That lack of support was a source of considerable frustration for his supporters, who felt he was being overlooked and even penalized in comparison to players who were connected to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. McGriff chose to not say much, often just saying that he was happy to be considered. By the time early voting ended Friday, nearly one in every three Cobb County voters had already cast a ballot in the runoff election between U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Herschel Walker. More than 155,510 Cobb voters, or 30.4%, have voted early in person or by absentee ballot, according to data from the Secretary of State's office. That turnout rate surpasses the state at-large, where 1,852,593 voters, or 26.4%, have cast a ballot. Early voting totals in Cobb weren't as high as before the November 8 general election, but voters had far less time to cast a ballot — one week before the runoff, as opposed to three weeks before the general election. That resulted in single-day totals that blew past the previous election. Last Monday, for example, saw over 27,000 voters cast a ballot in person, resulting in long lines at some Cobb polling locations. On Friday, the county said 29,699 people voted early. By way of comparison, the largest single-day total in the general election, which saw short wait times, was around 14,600. In Cobb, the huge early voting turnout was overshadowed Friday by a legal dispute over absentee ballots. The American Civil Liberties Union and Southern Poverty Law Center sued the county, alleging that delays in ballot mailing caused by the Thanksgiving holiday had disenfranchised voters. After hours of negotiation, Superior Court Judge Kellie Hill signed off on an agreement to extend the absentee ballot deadline by three days — to December 9 — for any voter whose absentee ballot application was accepted on or before Nov. 26. Ballots in that category must be postmarked by Tuesday, December 6, which is Election Day. Three players scored in double figures, and Kell used an opportunistic defense to keep McEachern at bay and win their matchup 67-62 in the Tournament of Champions Showcase at Wheeler High School on Saturday. The Longhorns, the Number 1 team in Class AAAAA, trailed only twice the entire game -- at 8-6 in the first quarter, and then 40-39 in the third -- and found a way to win despite missing 7-foot center Peyton Marshall. Coach Jermaine Sellers said Marshall could have played if it was a playoff game, but the team did not want to take the chance this early in the season. To offset his absence, Kell played the entire game with a added sense of urgency, grabbing nearly every loose ball, getting hands in passing lanes and creating steals. Each time McEachern, which was playing without starting guard Moses Hipps, seemed to get back into the game, Kell would force a turnover to two and push its lead back to four or five points, which it was the majority of the second half. The Longhorns needed to do all those things to help offset the performance of the Indians' Ace Bailey. The 6-foot-9 junior forward, a day after scoring 34 points against South Cobb, he kept McEachern, ranked third in Class AAAAAAA, in the game with a 30-point performance. The Cobb Galleria and Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre released its annual report this week, and business for both is back in full swing. For the first time since 2019, both venues were financially in the black. That was made possible due to the full return of live entertainment and events at two of Cobb's largest and busiest destinations. The Galleria hosted 187 events, up from less than 100 events in its previous fiscal year. Approximately 229,000 people visited the venue. CEPAC, meanwhile, held 178 events and brought in 180,000 guests after hosting next to no events during the depths of the pandemic. The Galleria posted an operating profit of just shy of $2 million, while the Galleria hit $3.53 million, the latter topping its 2019 numbers by roughly $750,000. The authority also boasted its best sales tax proceeds since before the pandemic. After generating about $1.7 million last year, the authority reported its venues generated $7.5 million in revenue from sales, liquor, hotel-motel and other taxes. Wheeler opened the second half on a 10-2 run to build a double-digit lead and gradually pulled away from a pesky Kimball High School from Texas squad 77-61 in the final game of the Tournament of Champions Showcase at Wheeler High School on Saturday. Kimball kept the game close throughout the first half and trailed only 30-28 at the break, so coach Larry Thompson said it was important to get off to a good start in the third quarter. The main big guy in the middle was 6-foot-9 forward Arrinten Page. The USC signee took full advantage, finishing the night with a team-high 21 points, including six dunks, along with 12 rebounds. Leading 41-34 a 3-pointer and a dunk by Jelani Hamilton, who finished with 12 points, pushed the Wildcats' lead to 46-34. Back-to-back dunks by Page late in the quarter gave Wheeler, the Number 1 team in Class AAAAAAA, a 50-40 advantage before five straight points by T'Johnn Brown, who led all scorers with 24 points, cut the lead to five to start the fourth quarter. Isaiah Collier, who had 16 points, eight assists and five rebounds, finally found his groove in the final 8 minutes. He opened the quarter with a driving layup, got fouled, and made the free throw. He added four more points as the game came to a close, but he set up three of Page's four dunks down the stretch with some big-time assists. A Page dunk and a 3-pointer by Hamilton pushed the lead back into double-digits at 65-54. A dunk and a putback by Ricky McKenzie made the lead 13 at the 2:48 mark, and two more dunks by Page put Wheeler up 75-61. Josh Hill scored nine points and McKenzie added eight. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Max Verstappen drove like a champion in Canada, and is now 46 points clear at the top of F1's Drivers' standings. Could Carlos Sainz have caught him in Canada? Can Ferrari catch him this season? Joining Tom Clarkson to debrief after the Canadian Grand Prix is 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve and Josh Hill – son of '96 champ Damon. They hear from Ferrari's Jock Clear – who says Leclerc's terrific recovery drive to P5 wasn't the maximum result possible – and Red Bull's Christian Horner, who's in awe of how Verstappen is performing this season. Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer takes us inside Fernando Alonso's epic qualifying performance and Alfa Romeo's Fred Vasseur celebrates more points for Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu.
