A show about movies through the lens of the legends that make them.
The podcast won't stay dead. @beckalano @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Recorded almost a year ago, our long-awaited Casino episode finally escapes the vault. At one point, Austin asks me if we'll be caught up by Killers of the Flower Moon's Oscar campaign and, true to my word, I yell "NO". In other news, my CassaBesties co-host Mallory Blair makes her CineMythology debut and we play the worst game I've ever thought up for this podcast. Was it all worth the wait? Probably not but I hope you enjoy it all the same. @MalloryMovies @austin_hayden @creamatoria @Cinemythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
We celebrate the life and career of Ryan O'Neal with a discussion of his slickest star vehicle. My audio is a little choppy at times because I had to cut out a lot of barking. Peggy was very excitable during this episode but can you blame her? It's Ryan O'Neal, it's Isabelle Adjani, it's Bruce Dern, it's Walter Hill, folks. What a cast. What a picture. What a podcast. @creamatoria @austin_hayden @CineMythology Send mailbag questions to cinemythologypod@gmail.com
We run down some of Austin's favorite new movies, some of Raymond's favorite old movies and exactly one prompt from the mailbag. Not a great ratio, I don't know what to tell you. You know what, I loved having this conversation with Austin and I loved listening back to it while editing. This is a movie that both encourages and defies explanation. Truly one of a kind. We had a couple hours to chat about it which didn't increase my understanding of the film one bit but considerably increased my appreciation of it and that, to me, is a sign of great art. It's beguiling; It continues to unfold without ever truly revealing its secrets. I hope you all get a chance to see Eraserhead and I hope you all enjoy this discussion which is more AROUND the movie than ABOUT it, if that makes sense. The book that I mention in this episode, which I forgot the name of during recording, is "Eraserhead, The David Lynch Files: Volume 1" by Kenneth Godwin. @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
A year after their Night of the Living Dead episode, Becky and Raymond return to the works of George A. Romero. It's an impulse they can't explain, perhaps something buried deep down in their psyche. This filmmaker meant something to them when they were younger and they can't resist coming back again and again, year after year. They get up and podcast. The people who listen get up and podcast! @Beckalano @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Kelsi and Trey from The Extra Credits podcast join us for the middle chapter of our Friedkin trifecta. Everything goes well until a stunning revelation an hour into the episode. Will the CineMythology listeners revolt? Will Raymond ever regain his credibility? Did he ever have any credibility to lose? Press play now on the podcast people are saying is "about film history". @TheExtraCredits @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Riding high off the box office success of Cape Fear, Scorsese brings an unexpected adaptation to the silver screen. We're joined by Ra'Shawn from When Cinephiles Attack to dig into this movie's emotional violence, Thelma Schoonmaker's experimental editing techniques and all things Michelle Pfeiffer. @TheSimbaTattoo @cinephileattack @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
The CassaBesties finally round the corner to John Cassavetes' directorial work with this discussion of his seminal feature debut. CineMythology's Austin Hayden pops in to discuss his favorite filmmaker and how Cassavetes' reputation has been unfairly pegged to a single aspect of his process. What makes Shadows so great and its creative success so difficult to replicate for generations of independent filmmakers? Like Pee-wee Herman, Paul Reubens was one of a kind and there's no better film to remember him by than Tim Burton's madcap debut feature. We're joined by podcast logo artist extraordinaire Amanda Chavez to discuss all the bits, quotes, goofs and gags that we've been obsessing over since childhood. Check out Amanda's Etsy at https://www.etsy.com/shop/Pizzagirlart @pandarinorange @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Our run of tribute shows races on as we celebrate the late great William Friedkin with his Oscar winning masterpiece. You may think Popeye Doyle is a reckless monster but, at the end of the day, you'd be right. Buckle up, assholes, the only other Friedkin protagonist with this much pizazz is fucking Pazuzu. @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
After Robbie Robertson's death, we thought it would be appropriate to double back and discuss Scorsese's most iconic documentary but then we got carried away and ended up talking about Barbenheimer for most of the episode. Austin was on a tight schedule and I thought it'd be difficult to do 90 minutes on a rock doc so I took us down a few too many rabbit holes and, before I knew it, we were out of time. It's all tangentially related to The Last Waltz; we discuss big cultural moments and the manner in which our notions of celebrity have changed in the years since this film. I think it's still a good episode but it's just not a very good Last Waltz episode. What are you gonna do, ya know? @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Let us tell you the story of Love and Hate. We absolutely LOVE Charles Laughton's work behind the camera and we absolutely HATE that there isn't more of it. Martin Scorsese puts a new coat of paint on an old Hollywood classic. Break out your cigars and get ready to laugh out loud, but not in a genuine way, more in a really forced, purposefully obnoxious way that feels vaguely menacing. We come in hot on this bad boy with a long discussion about the strike and where the industry may be headed. Hey gang. Since Twitter is circling the drain, I figured I'd use the podcast feed to update everybody on the show and solicit your questions and comments for an upcoming mailbag. Please send them my way at cinemythologypod@gmail.com. We circle back to honor the late greats Ray Liotta and Jonathan Demme with the movie that put the former on Scorsese's map. How many other movies will we talk about before getting to Something Wild? We celebrate the late great John Singleton by discussing his seismic feature debut and the legacy he left behind. From the extraordinary cast to Singleton's technical flourishes, this picture truly deserves its place among the classics. @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Returning champion Becky Catalano joins us for a discussion of Scorsese's most popular flick and the debut of a new segment which goes surprisingly well. We cover everything from the towering performances to the non-stop needle drops, underlining the film's humor and humanity along the way. Are these Fellas actually Good? Tune in now to find out. @beckalano @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
This one was recorded a while ago and Austin and I were talking about the (then) impending writers strike which ended up becoming a major chunk of this episode. We got pretty deep into A.I. generated "art" and how it fits within broader political and cultural trends in America, what that portends for our future and how Slacker is a weirdly appropriate movie for this current moment. @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Not sure if anybody reads these but feel free to skip out on this movie after Scorsese's segment. We mostly talk about that one and then just kind of bounce off the other two into tangents about art, artifice and artificial intelligence. Should be a good listen. @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Things get hot and heavy on the pod as the boys discuss Steven Soderbergh's feature film debut. The conversation kicks off with some essential haircut talk before pivoting to the movie's brilliant cast and script. Eventually, Austin gently nudges Raymond into a rant about the film's impact on the industry as a whole and he talks for twenty minutes straight without taking a breath. Healthy relationship with movies ya got there, Creamer. @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
We rise from our grave to discuss Scorsese's Mount Everest, The Last Temptation of Christ. Michael and Austin say a bunch of interesting, thought-provoking, philosophical stuff while Raymond does his best to not sound stupid. Thanks for hanging in there, folks. Enjoy the show. @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Not gonna lie, this one got away from us. We talk about Bonnie & Clyde's place in film history and American history more broadly which opens things up to a discussion of how we think of outlaws today, how culture has shifted over time and the ways in which our technology and institutions have failed us. All of that said, we bring it back to the movie to end on a hopeful note in these troubled times. If you'd like to participate in the CineMythology listeners' Sight & Sound list, please submit your ten film ballot via Twitter or email. @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
The Bermuda Boys are Back and Better than ever with a discussion of the former greatest movie of all time. We discuss the recent Sight & Sound poll and offer some theories as to how and why this film has seemingly cemented its place at the top of Hitchcock's filmography. We wrap things up with a mailbag question about Rotten Tomatoes that leads to further discussion on the value of film criticism in this day and age. @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
We honor the late great Jean-Luc Godard by discussing his debut feature but our conversation quickly veers toward other experimental standouts and revolutions in the art form. We discuss the democratization of film, the industry's ever-changing economic landscape and try to isolate the exact moment someone's sense of style becomes self-parody. In true CineMythology fashion, we briefly mention our thoughts on the movie at the very end of the episode so feel free to skip ahead if that's what you're here for. @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Hey folks, Just wanted to jump into the podcast feed to update everyone on our increasingly sporadic schedule and offer some horror movie recommendations. Becky and I ended up having a great discussion that veered immediately into film history and 80 year old hot takes. Austin will be back soon for our belated discussion of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless. Until then, have a great time at the movies! @beckalano @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
It's Halloween and there's no better way to celebrate than with an ice cold glass of Halloween. Tuck your pumpkins into bed and get ready for some Halloween. On a Monday? That's right, baby. Forget the World Series, this is the real Fall Classic. Raymond and Austin will be back next Wednesday, covering Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless. Until then, Halloween! @Tail_boi @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com @creamatoria
Our ghost story series comes to a close with Tony Todd's terrific turn as Candyman. We discuss the sociopolitical underpinnings of this masterpiece, unreliable narrator syndrome and how the stories we tell have real world consequences. We end the episode with a rundown of Raymond's ideal six movie Halloween marathon.
Look, we definitely talk about Night of the Living Dead but it just takes us a minute to get there, okay? This is one of my favorite movies and I took the job seriously but I'm not gonna lie, folks, we got a little bit loose on this episode. I hope you enjoy it because we had a blast. @Beckalano @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Lowery Lads™ and Cronenboys™ unite as October rolls along. We're joined by writer/director/tweeter extraordinaire Megan Gilbert to talk about filmmaking, the afterlife and how passive-aggressive ghosts can get when you don't listen to their demo. @meegangilbert @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Ghost month continues apace with Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Kairo aka Pulse. It's tough to imagine this film being set at any other place or any other time but its increasingly prescient and universal themes make for great, indepth discussion. Make sure you stick around until the end to hear Raymond's analysis of what might be the scariest scene in movie history. @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
October is here and ghost stories came with it, folks. This week we're discussing Personal Shopper which is one of Raymond's all-time favorites. We get into Kristen Stewart's extraordinary thumb acting, this movie's richly textured soundscape and whether or not ghosts have iPhones. @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Austin is finally back from Italy so we're discussing one of his all-time favorites with a little help from my dog. We hear about his travels in another installment of Austin's Hayden Voyage™ before getting into what this movie means to him, how it defies the viewer's expectations and what we all expect from art in general. I usually try to write at least three sentences for these so that's what's going on at this point in the description. @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Evan Yee jumps on the podcast at the last minute to discuss George Miller's Fury Road followup, Three Thousand Years of Longing. An ode to romance, storytelling and life itself, this film is refreshingly sincere if slightly unconventional. Join us as we discuss its themes, execution and place in Miller's legacy. @yeeoldevan @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Austin is busy gallivanting around Italy so Mella from When Cinephiles Attack joined Raymond in the podcast factory for a discussion of Patricia Cardoso's Real Women Have Curves. We discuss the film's legacy, Cardoso's attention to detail and America Ferrera's brilliant breakout performance. This indie trailblazer may be underseen but it undoubtedly deserves a place in the visual canon. @Mella_Bell @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
We celebrate Labor Day and give another tip of the cap to James Caan with a discussion of Michael Mann's proletarian powerhouse debut, Thief. Rich with atmosphere and obsessed with process, Thief is a simple story that's elevated by masterful filmmaking and topnotch performances. It's so good, Austin would try to steal the election from Misery again if he could. Whether or not he gets the diamonds, James Caan will always have our hearts. @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Join us as we discuss the film that looms the largest over Scorsese's early work, John Ford's The Searchers. Our guest breaks down the many reasons he counts this as his favorite film of all time and we end the episode by running down a few favorites of our own with the highly anticipated Western Draft. @KeirSiewert @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
After mentioning it on multiple episodes, we finally jump into the Time Tunnel to discuss Sydney Pollack's The Yakuza. It's always tough for me to figure out what to write here but it's even more difficult this week because I don't leave a whole lot left unsaid during this discussion. In case you can't tell, this is one of my favorite films but it launches a much broader conversation on film culture in the 21st century, how this movie might be different today, what makes a great onscreen hero and why Ken Takakura fits the bill. We'll be back next week with The Searchers. Enjoy the show! @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Ra'Shawn and Mella from When Cinephiles Attack join us for a discussion of Jordan Peele's newest nightmare. We're talkin' Gordy, we're talkin' Kaluuya, and you better believe we're talkin' about how this movie (like all movies) is a western. Then, we end the episode by discovering that Austin is a bad planner and worse negotiator. As I upload this at 2:45 AM, I'm sure of exactly one thing; This podcast is a bad miracle. @Mella_Bell @TheSimbaTattoo @CinephileAttack @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
They said we couldn't talk about The Color of Money for three hours but they were (mostly) wrong. Author/Film Critic Darren Mooney joins Raymond for a discussion of Martin Scorsese's wilderness years, the evolution of the movie star and some thoughts on the film industry's future. Then, Austin swoops in for a deep dive on The Color of Money and a further appreciation of its predecessor. @Darren_Mooney @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Does Raymond have talent? Does Austin have character? Find out for yourself as we lay the groundwork for next week's Color of Money discussion with some background on Fast Eddie Felson and the silver screen icon that portrayed him. We dig into The Hustler's highlights and lowlifes and, in classic CineMythology fashion, eventually conclude that this movie about a guy playing pool is somehow a western. Rack 'em! @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Well, we had Karstcast host and video essayist extraordinaire Karsten Runquist on to discuss one of his favorite Scorsese movies and then most of his audio was lost. Prior to editing the podcast, I recorded a brief intro explaining our new release schedule and didn't mention the missing audio because I didn't know that it was missing until I started editing the episode at my girlfriend's place a few hours later. Now it's 3:30 in the morning and I'm finishing the edit but I don't have my microphone so I can't record a new intro with a disclaimer about the audio issues and, frankly, I just want to get this thing uploaded so my night can be over. Pretty hack for the universe to After Hours me while I'm editing a podcast about After Hours but, like Paul Hackett himself, I probably deserve it. @RunquistKarsten @karstcast @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
When Austin's away, the demons will play. Join Raymond and Lux on the Highway to Hell as they discuss Phil Tippett's stop motion magnum opus, Mad God. After thirty years in the oven, this carnival of horrors has finally been unleashed on the viewing public and is available to stream on Shudder. We explore the depths of Tippett's inferno before discussing the dustup over another recent streaming debut. Listener beware, this way lies madness! @Tail_boi @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Just when he thought he was out, Robert De Niro pulls Martin Scorsese back in. Join Raymond, Austin and Wisecrack's Lux as they honor Rupert Pupkin, The Original King of Comedy. @Tail_boi @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
We let the listeners decide which film we'd discuss to celebrate the life of James Caan and our "number one fans" chose the movie where he gets terrorized for an hour and a half. Great work, gang. Very respectful. Very decent of you all. @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
Austin steps back into the ring after going fifteen rounds with COVID to discuss Raging Bull with Raymond and returning champion Becky Catalano. The three of them have a marathon discussion about the film's challenging nature, De Niro's Oscar-winning performance, and Martin Scorsese leaving everything on the mat. @beckalano @austin_hayden @creamatoria @CineMythology cinemythologypod@gmail.com
