Alright, film fanatics, gather round your audio devices! Dan and Sarah are back on Shoot the Hostage, and this week we've finally braved a cinematic experience that's less blockbuster and more… well, block-bust. We're talking about Martin Scorsese's 1982 gem (that the world collectively ignored), The King of Comedy. Settle in as we dissect this certified box office flop, a movie so unloved by initial audiences that, according to Entertainment Tonight, was the biggest flop of 1983. We'll be trying to unravel why this incredible film, starring the one and only Robert De Niro as the intensely awkward and delusional Rupert Pupkin, alongside the incomparable Jerry Lewis as the beleaguered talk show host Jerry Langford, somehow failed to connect with audiences despite the Scorsese touch. Was the world simply not ready for its cringe comedy and profoundly uncomfortable exploration of fame and obsession? We'll also be singing the praises (as we see fit) of Sandra Bernhard's gloriously unhinged performance as Masha, a character who redefines the term 'stan'.... We'll be tackling the burning questions: Was Rupert the proto-incel? Is his stand-up actually… good? And just how much inspiration did Joker shamelessly borrow from this criminally underseen cult film? (Spoiler: a metric tonne) What to expect from this episode: A deep dive into the mystery of why The King of Comedy was a certified box office flop yet has ascended to cult classic status. Our unfiltered opinions on the unforgettable performances of Robert De Niro, the surprisingly serious Jerry Lewis, and the absolute revelation that is Sandra Bernhard. A look at the film's unsettlingly contemporary themes of celebrity worship, the desperate pursuit of fame, and the dark side of parasocial relationships. Our reliably questionable humour and Dan's ongoing battle with basic pronunciation. So, if you're a devotee of Martin Scorsese, fascinated by movies that flopped at the box office, or simply seeking a podcast that appreciates a truly unique and disturbingly prescient film, then congratulations, you've found your tribe! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Christopher Lewis, son of entertainer & human juggernaut, the one, the only, Jerry Lewis. Chris was kind enough to reach out to us via a mutual connection at the Library of Congress and was pretty terrific about answering all our questions, big and small about the man known as “The King of Comedy.” The impetus for our chat was Chris' book Jerry Lewis on Being a Person, a 300+ page book is packed with photos, ruminations, life lessons, antidotes and more. It's a wonderful look at a complex comedian, director, writer, producer, golfer and philanthropist. Chris talked to us about his father and was frank about why he looks at his father with “rose colored glasses,” his father's lust for life and everything in between. Somehow we get to a vast amount of information on “Le Roi du Crazy” as the French called him. Our discussion hits everything from his love of audio and video technology to just how much of the Jerry Lewis archive was delivered to the Library of Congress. We also spoke about culturally significant high points like his guest appearance on Pink Lady and Jeff ans Slapstick (of Another Kind). Along the way we get to talking about The Day the Clown Cried, an true art imitates life Rupert Pupkin stalking situation that had everyone in the family on edge, why handshake deals were so important to Jerry and what comedians made Jerry Lewis laugh. All you have to do is sit back and listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.

Continuing this weeks's run of collaborations between Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro, we are now approaching the 40th Anniversary of likely the most obscure film which they worked on together.  Scorsese returns to direct DeNiro in a completely different sort of role from his more recent tough guy ones in movies like Taxi Driver - this time he plays Rupert Pupkin, an "aspiring comedian" living in early '80's New York City who has only one dream.....to get a stand-up gig on "The Jerry Langford Show" which is the most popular night-time talkshow in the country, loosely modeled on "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson" at the time.  Langford is played by legendary comedian Jerry Lewis in a very different type of actor's turn for him.  Pupkin becomes OBSESSED with getting on Jerry's show and in the process starts to stalk him....and hilarity ensues! :) Well at the very least some pretty funny satire...... Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

There are few films that have managed to capture the desperation and dread that some folks in the world of entertainment go through in their quest for ultimate glory. The exhausting journey of trying to nab that one big break has been detailed to some degree in many films and shows. But the extreme lengths that one can go to in an attempt to achieve one's showbiz dreams, has been most accurately portrayed in Martin Scorcese's 1982 film, The King of Comedy. And it's our Lost and Found for today. The film follows Rupert Pupkin, a struggling standup comedian played by Robert Deniro who hopes to get a spot in the Tonight's Show. When a chance encounter with the show's aging legendary host Jerry Langford (played by the inimitable Jerry Lewis and modeled on Johnny Carson) offers a glimmer of hope, Pupkin dives right in. But as it turns out, what seemed like an accidental big break was just a ruse to politely turn the struggling comedian away. But Pupkin is determined, desperate and willing to resort to extreme measures such as kidnapping the show's host to get his big break. How this one folds up is anyone's guess but the asphyxiating feeling of sitting through the turbulent events that follow actually makes it a taut thriller worth watching.Deniro is in prime form here and had just won the Best Actor Oscar for Raging Bull prior to this film. He completely immerses himself into the unassuming and relentless sociopath who struggles to accept his mediocrity. In some ways, Pupkin resembles Deniro's iconic Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver but is surely less belligerent, even if the character may be equally off-kilter and damaged.    If you're in the mood for an unsettling watch that could leave you singularly disturbed, add The King of Comedy to your watchlist now.Well that's the OTTplay Lost and Found for today, until the next time it's your host Nikhil signing out.Aaj kya dekhoge OTTplay se poochoWritten by Kunal Guha

(not Pumpkin, or Puffer, get it right) This 1982 Martin Scorsese movie might have bombed at the box office and received lukewarm reviews at the time, but it's comments on fame and public perfection are as relevant as either. We briefly go into our relationship with Scorsese as a director, and Austin incorrectly states that he was the man behind the camera on Shark Tale (which is ass). This time around on the It's Not That Deep Bro Podcast we are diving into Martin Scorsese's 1982 cult classic "The King of Comedy" starring Robert DeNiro as the idiot savant Rupert Pupkin who will stop at nothing to achieve his dreams. It is a stark contrast to some of Scorsese's most well known films and formed the thematic backdrop for last years box office smash "Joker" directed by Todd Phillips. Hello! (hello…hello…hello!) It seems rather lonely in here, like we’ve been away for too long and the apocalypse happened without us. Or, more specifically, the 1990s happened. We’re back from a brief five month sabbatical (minus one cat and two spleens) to change formats once again! We’re expanding our repertoire and tackling movies of all genres, weaving our way seamlessly, like Paul Harvey, between new and old. Don’t fret, casual listener! Horror is still on the menu (in the form of a forthcoming segment called “Sunday Scaries”). For now, sit back, put your feet up, turn on cruise control and let the simple melodies of Pupcorn and A Movie put you to sleep. More than four elements!? Scandalous. We salute Chris Tucker’s performance as Ruby Rhod, take a trip down Copyright Lane with the new Lion King, tear George Lucas a new one, enlist in Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam, and find a bit of time to list our favorite Batmens and their diverse cast of villains. Too long? Always. Too funny? Not even close. Joey and Lauren heckle Lauren’s parents wedding video and give an update on their spleen-less Corgis and probably other things! The first trailer for the Todd Phillips-directed Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has arrived. There's a lot to unpack here, but what really caught my eye was a younger-looking Robert DeNiro, who is appearing in the Martin Scorsese-produced film, set in the early '80s as an eerily familiar looking late night talk show host. Sadly, this isn't Rupert Pupkin, but the imagery does ring true in this movie about a sad clown, and there are all kinds of Batman Easter eggs, though the movie itself looks like a combination of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's version of the Joker's origin from Batman: The Killing Joke, with just enough differences that this could be an "Elseworlds" kind of story. You can watch for yourself here: https://youtu.be/t433PEQGErc Also, Happy Birthday to Robert Downey, Jr.! It's Showtime! No, not Beetlejuice. Buddy cop meets reality TV in this 2002 action comedy. You might know it better as the one where William Shatner teaches De Niro how to act. That's right, Captain Kirk shows the man behind Travis Bickle, Jake La Motta, Rupert Pupkin and Young Vito how to act. That sounds good, yeah? But then it also stars a post 1980s Eddie Murphy, which is not such a sure thing. It was a critical and commercial bomb on release, but can it really be that bad? It's time to re-evaluate BFGC style. But which films would you choose for the stars on the back of the DVD box? Will Eddie Murphy rein it in, or be all swivelling bug eyes? Továbbra is Martin Scorsese munkásságával foglalkozunk. Mi mindent jósolt meg a The King of Comedy a sztárkultusz változásairól? Vajon össze lehet kötni Rupert Pupkin figuráját David Brenttel vagy BoJack Horsemannel? Mikor túl kínos a kínos humor? “I always go back to Ozu and Bresson, both of whom I admire a great deal. I like the way Bresson frames midriff: a person going across the room but you're just seeing the half, the midriff of the body. The scene in Pickpocket at the racetrack. And Hitchcock, any of the inserts: the scene in The Wrong Man where Fonda is booked and Hitchcock shows you the detail, each step of the process. It has such a sense of isolation and helplessness, because these objects, these inserts, they speak to you. They tell you how to look at them. They direct the viewer,” Martin Scorsese said to Nick Pinkerton in the cover feature of our January/February issue. This special live episode of the Film Comment podcast deep-dives into perhaps the most appropriate Scorsese film for a live media event, The King of Comedy, shown in the Museum of the Moving Image's Martin Scorsese retrospective. Following its screening of the film, the Museum hosted The Film Comment Podcast, featuring Pinkerton; Eric Hynes, MoMI curator and FC columnist; Nicolas Rapold, Editor; and Violet Lucca, Digital Editor. The lively conversation covers the film's unsettling mix of humor and discomfort, its open-ended slippage between fantasy and reality, its place in the careers of Scorsese and De Niro, and the myriad ways in which Rupert Pupkin's name gets hopelessly botched. Listen and enjoy, whether or not your office happens to be a Pupkin-esque setup in a Times Square phone booth. And as a special treat, the discussion is followed by a guided audio tour of the museum's exhibition of Scorsese artifacts with Lucca and MoMI Chief Curator David Schwartz.

"It's So Hard" is still one of the tracks of Imagine from which just 1 alternate take exists : a take without the saxophone of King Curtis. Lennon and Curtis probably met around the Shea stadium concert, where Curtis was one of the warm-up acts, and Lennon called him in for this track. On Imagine, the saxophone is mostly buried in the mix. In the outtakes, we can hear King Curtis riffing away. Since it's a warmup, some King Curtis riffing are more "free stile", ad-lib than the official version. For this mix, we synced Curtis' riffing with Take 2 (not on Imagine). Many thanks to Rupert Pupkin, who came up with this idea !
