“The brief was ‘we want to sell some more train tickets to Germany, where you can go to Berlin for a techno party, you can go to Hamburg for the opera, have a famous opera in Hamburg, or you can go to Munich for the beer festival.' And we made this audio journey with sound, and you definitely can hear, ah, now we're in Berlin, it's the opera, and now we go to Munich. So yeah, we can play with that. And the client just also loved the idea. It takes two to tango, as you say, the client also needs to value and understand if you want the effect of this. You need to work with this in an ambitious and professional way.” – Karsten Kjems This episode is the second half of my conversation with audio branding specialist and founder and CEO of Sonic Minds Karsten Kjems, as we talk about the surprising value of silence in sound design, why familiarity doesn't always breed contempt when it comes to sonic logos, and what it means to be a musician in a world where both instruments and vocals can come from a laptop. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available, along with other interesting bits of audio-related news. Both those things really help, and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. (0:00:00) - The Power of Sound DesignAs the second half of our conversation starts, Karsten points out how effective sound design isn't always intuitive, and that less is sometimes more. “I've played some gigs, sometimes for a reception,” he says, “and people were just talking and talking, and they didn't listen to the music at all. But then suddenly if we start to play really soft, then people go, ‘oh, I think the band is playing.'” He adds that sonic interfaces today are, in some ways, reminiscent of the early days of web design. “In the old days, they had flashes and everything moving,” he recalls. “You know, now we just go back to ‘give me a simple burger menu,' ‘click contact,' or whatever. User usability is also very important.”(0:06:41) - The Evolution of Sound DesignOur discussion turns to audio marketing, and Karsten points out how much of effective sonic branding depends on the demographics. “There has actually been a study for that, that shows that we create our musical preference, I think, when it's between we are 17 and 21,” he says. “We're about to get the first boyfriend or girlfriend, moving away from home, these really high peak moments in our lives.” We talk about AI in sound, and the direction he sees it taking in the industry. “It's just like when the sampler came out,” he recalls. “'What should drummers do?' And now the drummer plays on top of samplers, so every drummer has a sampler or a drum machine next to him, so he uses it as a tool.”(0:20:22) - Quality Sound DesignAs our conversation comes to a close, we talk more about the role of shifting demographics in sound design and how they impact not just relatability but the user's experience. “If you're having hearing loss or having, you know, difficult hearing,” Karsten notes, “then you don't want products that really annoy you. You want to be able to understand them.” He shares some of his...
“If you can see that your product is selling better with better sounds, and it gets better reviews Actually, I saw a car review that scored the car better just because the sounds were better. He didn't talk about how fast it could go, how fast it could brake or how many airbags, he talked about the user experience. A car today is a driving iPad on wheels. So, all these sounds here, I got so stressed from these beeps and boops, suddenly it was too close to the edge, or too close to that... sometimes there wasn't even a thing, and it just starts to, what was that? Was a fly running through the camera? What was it? So, I think it's so important that we also choose brands and products with our ears as well with our eyes, and also with our wallets.” – Karsten Kjems This episode's guest was raised in a musical home with a studio in the basement. He began drumming professionally at 23, and his passion for sound design and early use of digital audio tools like ProTracker on the Amiga shaped his approach to music and technology. While working at a branding agency, he noticed companies struggling to define their sonic identity, leading him to launch one of the first strategic audio branding agencies, Sonic Minds, in 2004. Today, he's a recognized expert in the field, frequently speaking and teaching about sound design. His name is Karsten Kjems, and you'll want to hear more about his perspective on brand sounds, why he believes audio branding to be so important, and what sets good and bad sound apart. If you're still on the fence about audio branding for your own company, or if you're struggling to explain why it's important to your clients, you should definitely check out this conversation. (0:00:00) - The Power of Sound in BrandingAs we start things off, Karsten shares his early memories of sound, and how growing up with ADHD in a musical family shaped his formative years. “I was brought up in a family where my father was a drummer,” Karsten recalls, “so I've always been around musicians and music and the first time I really discovered that I had this almost perfect pitch was when I went to music school.” He explains how a surprising discovery at a concert led to his career in marketing and audio branding, and the seismic shift that the streaming era – and particularly the rise of YouTube – represented for the industry. “Suddenly brands and companies need to communicate in these spheres,” he tells us. “How did they do that? How did they choose music? How should they buy music? So it's a whole new game, from only being on TV and radio to being on all the time, to keep… producing content all the time.”(0:12:18) - Designing Meaningful Audio Branding ExperiencesOur conversation turns to UX and branding through sound design, and Karsten points out how ubiquitous sound interfaces have become these days. “A headset, a modern headset, for whatever company, it can have up to around 15 different sounds,” he...

#643: Picture this: you're at the Federal Reserve years ago. The chairman literally hangs up a conference call, waits 30 minutes, then calls back — suddenly everyone agrees on the rate decision. That's the kind of insider story Karsten Jeske (“Big ERN”) shares when he joins us to break down what's happening with the economy right now. Karsten worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta for eight years, then spent a decade on Wall Street at Bank of New York Mellon. Today he runs the popular Early Retirement Now website, where he applies his economist background to help people understand money and markets. You'll hear Karsten explain why the Fed is about to start cutting interest rates. The futures markets are pricing in a 90 percent chance of a quarter-point cut, with more cuts likely through the end of the year. But why? After all, inflation just ticked up in the latest CPI report, yet the Fed is still planning to lower rates. We dive into how this affects real people. If you're thinking about buying or selling a house, Karsten suggests acting sooner rather than later. He explains the "buy the rumor, sell the news" principle – the bond market may have already priced in the good news about rate cuts, so waiting might not help you. The conversation covers some surprising economics too. Did you know that high interest rates can actually cause housing inflation? When mortgage rates are expensive, fewer people build new homes, which drives up prices. It's the opposite of what most people think happens. Karsten walks through the recent jobs report revisions that caught everyone off guard. The government had to subtract nearly a million jobs from their previous estimates. He explains how this happens – it's not that officials are making up numbers, but tracking new businesses is genuinely hard to do in real time. You'll also learn about two Fed tools most people haven't heard of: the dot plot and R-star. The dot plot shows where Fed officials think interest rates should go over time. R-star represents the theoretical perfect interest rate when the economy has no problems — currently around 3 percent. The interview wraps up with Carsten's take on Fed culture. The consensus-building era under Greenspan is giving way to more dissenting votes, which actually makes the central bank more like it was decades ago under Paul Volcker. Enjoy! Do you ever feel like you don't quite fit into the traditional mold—whether in sports, school, or even life? Maybe you've tried the “standard” path but never felt at home, and deep down you wonder if there's something more—something uniquely yours. What if the obstacles you face aren't there to stop you, but to reveal your true strength? And what would it look like to transform those setbacks into a platform for purpose, impact, and leadership?Today's guest, Karsten Williams, embodies that very journey. From humble beginnings to becoming an 11-time American Ninja Warrior national finalist, Karsten has proven that resilience, creativity, and grit can carry you far beyond conventional boundaries. He turned his passion for movement into not only personal success, but also a mission to inspire others through mentorship, leadership, and community.Karsten Williams is an 11-time American Ninja Warrior national finalist, elite coach, and founder of Ninja Project—a movement platform redefining youth fitness and functional entertainment. With over a decade of experience across 50+ ninja gyms and events, he's on a mission to turn everyday people into champions through movement, mindset, and mentorship. What makes Karsten unique is not just his decorated Ninja Warrior career, but his passion for creating spaces where belonging meets possibility. He's leading a new generation to see obstacles not as limitations, but as opportunities to grow stronger, more confident, and more resilient. His story reminds us that failure isn't the end—it's the very foundation of greatness.Quotes:"Always stay true to you, don't compare yourself, and don't try to do what others can do. They might have a unique skill set that I don't necessarily have.""I want to create a space for those people that feel like they're maybe underserved, can come in and have their own experience, and have someone that can love on them, pour into them, encourage them, and it's a win for everybody.""When you do get to the top or experience that success, it's that much more meaningful and impactful because you know what the bottom feels like."Actionable Takeaways:Turn failure into fuel. Ask yourself: Where have I let a setback define me instead of refine me? Write down one failure you've experienced and list three lessons you gained from it.Run your own race. Don't copy someone else's path. Identify one area of life where you've been comparing yourself to others—then outline one action that reflects your strengths and style instead.Redefine obstacles. Each challenge is an opportunity to grow. This week, reframe a personal or professional obstacle by writing how it could actually serve as preparation for a future win.Create belonging for others. Who in your circle feels “on the outside” or like they don't have a place? Reach out and invite them into an activity, group, or conversation that builds connection.Pursue impact, not just success. Ask: If I keep going the way I am, what legacy will I leave behind? Journal about one way you can shift your daily habits from self-focus to serving others. Conclusion:Karsten's journey reminds us that obstacles aren't roadblocks—they're invitations to grow stronger, wiser, and more resilient. From crashing on his very first Ninja Warrior course to becoming an 11-time national finalist and mentor to thousands, he proves that success is built on perseverance, humility, and the courage to run your own race. In this episode we answer emails from Evan, James and Brandy. We discuss the joys of more cowbell from first principles and its origin story, a recent back-and-forth between Karsten and Tyler, the inherent problems with trying to massage data with crystal balls and what it's really revealing about the shortcomings of a basic 75/25 portfolio, some nuggets from Bill Bengen's new book, and some musings about bitcoin and gold.Links:Early Retirement Now Article: Can we increase the Safe Withdrawal Rate with Small-Cap Value Stocks? – SWR Series Part 62 - Early Retirement NowPortfolio Charts Response: The Human Complexities of Correcting the Record – Portfolio ChartsBill Bengen's New Book | A Richer Retirement: Supercharging the 4% Rule to Spend More and Enjoy More.Lyn Alden Talk: Nothing Stops This Train w/ Lyn Alden | Bitcoin 2025RSSX Fund: ReturnStacked® U.S. Stocks & Gold/Bitcoin ETFBreathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:What makes a truly optimal retirement portfolio? The conventional wisdom suggesting a simple 75% S&P 500 and 25% bond allocation deserves serious reconsideration according to mounting evidence from multiple sources.Bill Bengen, creator of the original 4% withdrawal rule, has published a groundbreaking new book that challenges long-held assumptions about retirement spending. By incorporating a more diversified approach—including US large, small, mid-size, and micro-cap stocks alongside international equities and treasury bonds—Bengen demonstrates that safe withdrawal rates could potentially reach 4.7% or higher. When accounting for current inflation levels, he suggests rates between 5-5.5% might be sustainable with properly diversified portfolios. The historical data speaks volumes. When examining performance during the worst possible retirement starting years (1929, 1960s, 1972-73, 1999-2000, 2008-09), portfolios with value tilts or alternative assets consistently outperformed simple index-based approaches. This critical finding undermines the narrative that concentration in broad market indexes represents the safest approach for retirees who actually need to spend from their portfolios. We also explore Bitcoin's potential role in modern portfolios, examining its correlation with technology stocks and questioning whether it functions as a true diversifier. Unlike gold, which maintains near-zero correlation with equity markets, Bitcoin increasingly moves in tandem with growth stocks as institutional adoption increases. This distinction matters significantly for investors seeking stability rather than speculation. New financial products like RSSX are emerging to capitalize on this dynamic, combining stocks, gold, and Bitcoin with adjustments based on relative volatility. The fundamental question isn't about maximizing theoretical returns or terminal wealth, but about constructing portfolios that reliably provide income through various market conditions. A well-diversified approach has historically delivered better outcomes for those spending from their portfolios than simple stock/bond splits—aligning with Bengen's philosophy of spending more and enjoying retirement rather than dying with maximum wealth.Looking to refine your retirement strategy? "Designing clubs is about understanding psychology." The famed architects talk about bringing emotions, durability and hidden logic into era-defining nightlife spaces. How do you design the world's best clubs? Studio Karhard, the architecture firm started by Thomas Karsten and his wife, Alexandra Erhard, in 2003, know exactly which ingredients go into a successful nightlife space. The Berlin-based duo are the visionaries behind Berghain and ∄ in Kyiv, as well as a number of private residences, businesses and smaller venues around the world. Their specialty, they say, is salvaging forgotten spaces and resurrecting them to serve a new purpose. In this RA Exchange, Karsten talks about first coming across the building that's now Berghain and working tirelessly with engineers and city planners to preserve its neoclassical facade. As he explains, creating a memorable atmosphere goes beyond just designing for aesthetics. There are countless hidden design features that serve to make venues like Berghain comfortable. But according to Karsten, Studio Karhard's masterpiece is ∄, which they began designing in 2018. He describes the special experience of first visiting the abandoned brewery—which was then in extreme disrepair—and bringing the lessons they took away from building Berghain to make this Ukrainian space their most successful project yet. This episode takes a look under the hood of the psychology, anthropology and emotional study that inform the venues that have shaped underground electronic music culture. Most people assume the “safe withdrawal rate” for retirement (or early retirement) is 4%. But, if that's the case, why is it SO hard to find anyone who's gotten to their FIRE number, quit their job, and lived entirely off of the 4% rule? If the 4% rule is so safe and backed by solid math, why are so few FIRE followers confident enough to actually use it? We don't know. So we asked Karsten, AKA “Big Ern,” from Early Retirement Now to help answer! Karsten has done the math, and the 4% rule checks out. But even he, an early retiree, doesn't follow it. So, instead of the safe withdrawal rate, what's the comfortable withdrawal rate early retirees should be following to FIRE on time and with less stress? And with turbulence in today's stock market, and rising prices (which cause your spending to rise), what does the right FIRE portfolio look like? Karsten walks through how your portfolio should change as you approach FIRE. He explains why hedging with cash-flowing assets may be a smart move, how much cash to keep on hand, and whether those reserves can actually protect against sequence risk. Plus, should you pay off your mortgage on the path to FIRE? Scott and Karsten offer two different perspectives on whether it's smarter to pay off your mortgage or invest that money instead. If you're planning to FIRE, this is info you need to know! In This Episode We Cover Is the 4% rule math or myth, and why doesn't anyone actually trust it enough to use it? The optimal FIRE portfolio for less risk and higher potential returns Cash reserves and emergency “buckets” to limit your sequence of returns risk Should you pay off your mortgage early or invest that money instead? One smart hedge to protect your portfolio against a stock market downturn And So Much More!
