Ready! Setty! Podcast!! - It's time to go back into the desert as Dave takes 2024's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga off the shelf. Phil looks back on their Fury Road episode and remarks that both were kind of interested to see this world expanded. However, he found the movie dull and the CGI to be sub-par. Dave enjoyed the action scenes well enough but felt a little let down with the length of the film and how certain set-pieces failed to deliver the way the original did.

On this episode we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Mad Max: Fury Road - Black and Chrome Edition. Often considered the greatest action film of all time, Fury Road reintroduced the world to Max, this time played by Tom Hardy, as he teams up with Furiosa to take on the dystopian warlord Immortan Joe. George Miller's stated intention was to make a movie that was one long chase, and as elemental and close to a silent film as possible. The Black and Chrome Edition brings this vision even closer.Other topics include Charlize Theron, George Miller's filmography and how Babe: Pig in the City fits in, America's obsession with celebrity culture, Warren Zevon's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Riot Fest, and whether or not we should cover The Beaver with Mel Gibson on the podcast.Songs of the WeekLet Them Eat War by Bad ReligionKurt Kobain by ProofBrothers In Arms by Junkie XLRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Play your flame guitar as you cue up the 655th edition of Have You Ever Seen to hear us jaw about the loner known as Max Rockatansky, but stay for the Imperator known as Furiosa. George Miller's 6-time Oscar-winner was the 4th in a series that already featured one of the greatest stunt movies ever made (The Road Warrior), but then he and his team managed to easily top it with Fury Road. And just as it was with the earlier pre-CGI films, most of the remarkable and dangerous stuff was done practically! Tom Hardy is solid casting in taking over the role that made Mad Mel Gibson a star, but this movie belongs to Charlize Theron as Furiosa. She, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough and the other fantastic female characters are the standouts in a surprisingly feminist film. So drive out, then drive back home as we head over to Australia (well, Namibia, really) and wrap up another Oscar Month with a detailed chat about Mad Max: Fury Road. Well, Actually: we said that it's unlikely Miller will get to make more films in this series because Furiosa bombed last year, but Mad Max: The Wasteland IS in pre-production. Welcome back to Born to Watch, the movie podcast where we dive deep into the films that define genres, push boundaries, and leave audiences speechless. This week, we're tackling one of the greatest action films of the modern era with our Mad Max Fury Road (2015) Movie Review. When George Miller resurrected the Mad Max franchise in 2015, nobody expected just how monumental Fury Road would become. A two-hour adrenaline rush packed with death-defying stunts, high-speed chases, and jaw-dropping practical effects, this film redefined what action movies could be. From the stunning cinematography to the minimal but powerful storytelling, Fury Road remains a cinematic triumph. But where does it rank in the Mad Max series? And is it truly a Mad Max movie, or does Furiosa steal the show? The BTW team breaks it all down.Mad Max Returns—But Is He the Star?Tom Hardy takes over the iconic role of Max Rockatansky, a road-weary survivor haunted by his past. But does Max get lost in the dust in a film filled with larger-than-life warlords, kamikaze war boys, and a heavy-metal guitarist strapped to a flame-throwing rig?Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa might be the real heart of Fury Road. Her mission to rescue the wives of the tyrannical Immortan Joe drives the story forward, and her character's emotional depth makes her one of the most compelling action heroines of all time. We discuss whether Fury Road is more of a Furiosa film than a Max one—and how this dynamic affects the franchise as a whole.Behind-the-Scenes Mayhem: A Production NightmareThe journey to bring Mad Max Fury Road to life was almost as chaotic as the movie. Originally planned to film in the Australian Outback, unexpected rainstorms turned the barren wasteland into a flower-filled paradise, forcing the production to move to Namibia. Months of gruelling desert shoots, on-set conflicts, and the sheer ambition of the stunts made this one of the most difficult productions in recent memory.George Miller, the mastermind behind the franchise, pushed for practical effects wherever possible. Almost everything you see on screen—the insane car chases, the gravity-defying stunts, and the war rigs tearing across the desert—was done for real. The result? It is a visceral, pulse-pounding experience unlike anything else. The Legacy of Fury RoadWhen Fury Road hit theatres, it was more than just a blockbuster—it was a game-changer. The film scored 10 Oscar nominations, winning six, including Best Editing for George Miller's wife, Margaret Sixel. But beyond the awards, Fury Road proved that practical effects, real stunts, and original storytelling could still dominate in an era of CGI-heavy action films. But how does it hold up nearly a decade later? Does Fury Road deserve a spot among the greatest action movies ever? And where does it sit in the Mad Max franchise compared to The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome? The BTW Verdict: An Action MasterpieceWith non-stop action, unforgettable characters, and some of the most visually stunning cinematography in movie history, Mad Max Fury Road is a must-watch for any action fan. Whether you're revisiting it for the tenth time or experiencing it for the first, there's no denying that this film is a relentless, high-octane thrill ride from start to finish.Tune in to this week's episode as we break down every explosive moment, debate the film's legacy, and determine if Fury Road is the best Mad Max film yet. Don't forget to leave a review, share the episode with fellow movie lovers, and share your thoughts on the film!

Almost a decade after Fury Road, George Miller has turned the orange filter back on to tell more tales from the wasteland. Anya Taylor-Joy takes center stage as a young Furiosa battling for survival and freedom from the maniacal Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). But how does this movie stack against the other Mad Max entries? And is it better than its box office performance suggests?
I am awaited! After a long time away, a bombastic veteran makes a triumphant return to the stage that made him famous. I'm talking, of course, about director George Miller, the driving force behind the Mad Max films since the first one hit the gas in 1979. Earlier this year, the latest installment of the Mad Max saga roared into cinemas… but for the first time, Max Rockatansky was not one of the lead characters. Instead, the film focuses on telling the origin story of Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in the last outing, Fury Road, here played by Anya Taylor-Joy, with Alyla Brown playing her as the child. With many characters familiar to Fury Road fans, this prequel forges enough connective tissue to feel part the saga sans Max, while Chris Hemsworth's Dementus provides a worthy adversary. That said, audiences themselves didn't make the trek to the theater, with the film barely surpassing its production budget at the box office. So what are we to make of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga? Is it a prequel that delivers the goods, or does this doomsday detour deserve to be lost in the Wasteland forever? Editor - Eliot Knapman FURIOSA editor Eliot Knapman is no stranger to the post-apocalyptic postproduction of a Mad Max movie, having previously worked as ACE editor Margaret "Margie" Sixel's second assistant on MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. For director George Miller's latest film in the franchise, not only was Eliot tapped to be co-editor with Sixel, but was there on set with Miller throughout production doing the first assembly under what had to be fun, but arduous, conditions. FURIOSA is the fifth installment in Miller's Mad Max franchise, and the first not focused on series protagonist Max Rockatansky, instead acting as both a spin-off prequel to MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015) and an origin story for the Fury Road character Furiosa, portrayed by both Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne in the prequel. Set 15 to 20 years before the events of Fury Road, the film follows the title character's life for over a decade, from her kidnapping by the forces of warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) to her ascension to the rank of Imperator. Eliot Knapman Prior to moving up to the editor's chair on FURIOSA, Eliot worked as a first assistant on such films as THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING (2022) and THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE (2017), and as a second assistant on films like MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015) and THE GREAT GATSBY (2013). At age 79, Aussie director George Miller has released the lively Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. This film comes out almost a decade after the highly regarded Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). It is a prequel to Fury Road starring Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy as young versions of the character Furiosa. Chris Hemsworth plays the villain Dementus, and there's a whole bunch of other demented characters that inhabit this post-apocalyptic wasteland. The film unfortunately bombed, and we'll discuss why, along with giving our review of this expensive action film!

Time on Screen is back this week with an all new episode covering one of the most talked about action movies of its era, Mad Max: Fury Road. Zach Kazan and Kyle Snarr both saw its prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, earlier this summer, which inspired them to revisit George Miller's long anticipated return to the Mad Max universe from 2015. Fury Road has a big reputation and for good reason – it's one of the most visually stunning pure action films ever made, and moves at a breakneck pace for the duration of its two hour runtime. Zach and Kyle dig into what they like most about the film, how it stands up over time, the inspired casting decisions (it's perhaps Charlize Theron's defining role) and how it compares to the other films in the Mad Max franchise. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy broke box office records and won awards when it premiered - but rumors were already circulating about an ugly on-set feud between the two stars. While Charlize and Tom stayed tight-lipped in the press, a tell-all book threw their rivalry into the public spotlight. In this episode, we'll get all the dirt on their complicated relationship, dissect the controversial world of method acting, and learn how far filmmakers will push their actors to get that perfect shot. We return to the Wasteland this week with Furiosa, and we've got quite the tour guide. Kyle Buchanan - author of Blood, Sweat & Chrome, THE book on the making of Mad Max: Fury Road - joins us as we do a definitive post-mortem on George Miller's latest. Going up against the reputation of Fury Road was always going to be an uphill battle for the Anya Taylor-Joy starrer, and we go into all the ways in which this film matches, exceeds, or misses the highs of 2015's action classic. Kyle brings with him plenty of behind-the-scenes details and shrewd observations, and Ben and Griffin bring a visceral report from their 4DX screening. And yes - of course we talk about how Dementus looks just like Guru Pitka. Jason and guest cohosts Randy and Sam all hold Mad Max: Fury Road as one of the best action movies ever (it's Jason's all-time favorite). So we were all excited for the sequel, Furiosa. Did it live up to Fury Road? No, but it was thrilling, funny, artful, imaginative, brutal, thought-provoking, well-acted, visually stunning, and yes, had some problems too. On this week's show, the hosts begin by jumping into Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel to George Miller's 2015 Fury Road, in which Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Furiosa, an arachnid beauty who's stolen as a child and becomes a wasteland road warrior. She's a “strong, silent type,” typical of the action film genre, but does that trope mean something different with a female protagonist in 2024? The panel discusses. (Read Dana's review of Furiosa!) Then, the three chat Hit Man, Richard Linklater's latest starring Glen Powell as Gary Johnson, a college professor who moonlights as a fake gunman for hire. It's a delightful rom-com tucked within a thriller—a romantic thriller, if you will–that manages to feel like a hangout film despite its ridiculous premise. (Read Dana's review of Hat Man!) Finally, ScarJo or FauxJo? Tech journalist and author of Blood in the Machine: The Origins of the Rebellion Against Big Tech Brian Merchant joins the panel to parse through Silicon's Valley's latest scandal: Scarlett Johansson accusing ChatGPT of stealing her voice for its new interface program. (Read Brian's newsletter about it!) In the exclusive slate Plus segment, the hosts answer an excellent listener question from Michael Schulman: What fictional works of art-within-the-art would you most want to see on their own? One of our most popular interstitial topics, we had to come back for a third run at Curvy Heroines this month in celebration of Bridgerton-mania online and our absolute delight that we finally get to see Penelope get that handsome man who is just back from his long trip to glow-up-land (we deserve nice things, and so do curvy heroines)! Sarah's talking exclusively about historicals today, and Jen is bringing new-to-the-pod authors to the table…all that, and we're naming the six historicals Sarah's written with curvy heroines (There's also a contemporary! Check the photo array, below). This one is a lot of fun.Our next read along is Joanna Shupe's The Devil of Downtown, from her Uptown Girls trilogy. It's Jen's favorite in the series. We Don't Need Another Hardy Director George Miller crafts the fifth installment of his Mad Max Saga into an origin story for one-armed trucker Furiosa. Anya Taylor-Joy (Queen's Gambit) takes the wheel from Charlize Theron to guide audiences from her green homeworld of Many Mothers to the sandy turf wars between Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme) and new baddie Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). But is it wise for the 79-year-old creator to travel down his Fury Road without series icon Tom Hardy in the driver's seat? Witness Jakob, Stuart, and Arnie make it epic with another podcast review.

Mel Gibson is out and Tom Hardy is in! Mad Max finally returned after a 30 year hiatus with Fury Road. This time around he's tangled himself up with Immortan Joe, a warlord of the wastelands on a vengeful quest to retrieve his stolen brides from Charlize Theron's Furiosa. And it turns out it's a pretty good movie with all its stunts and cars and punching and explosions and whatever.
