Keys For Kids Ministries

Bible Reading: Psalm 139:7-12; Matthew 6:28-30Austin sighed as he dropped his backpack to the kitchen floor and sat down at the table. His family had moved recently, and he missed his old school and all the friends he'd left behind. "Did you have a good day?" Mom asked. Austin shook his head. "I know it's hard for you, Austin," Mom said. "Adjusting takes time.""I guess," said Austin. "But I don't think I'll ever like my new teacher as much as I liked Mr. Jackson. And the kids here play games I've never heard of!""Well, give your new school a chance," said Mom. "You've only been there a couple of days. And remember, Jesus is just as close to you here as He was before. Trust Him--He can help you." She opened the patio door. "Speaking of help, do you want help filling the planters with the flowers I bought today?" "Okay," said Austin. They got to work, and when the planting was finished, Austin stood and admired the bright petunias and geraniums. When Austin came home from school the next day, the plants were drooping. "Mom, what's wrong with the flowers we planted?" "Their roots were shocked when we repotted them," said Mom. "But they'll be all right. They'll adjust, and soon they'll look better than ever." She smiled at Austin. "How was your day?" "Well…" Austin paused as he recalled things that had happened that day--his teacher saying, "Good job," when she handed back his math paper, and two boys asking him to play basketball with them at recess. "You know what?" said Austin. "I think I'm kind of like those flowers. Moving here gave me a bit of a shock, but I'm adjusting.""Good," said Mom. She smiled. "Think about it this way--we give our flowers everything they need in their new pots because we want them to grow. And God loves you even more than we love our flowers! He gives His children everything we need too--Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit to help us and always be with us. He is with us during this transition. Keep talking to Jesus about it, and trust Him to help you grow." –Carolyn E. Yost How About You?Has a recent change in your life left you feeling shocked and upset? It's normal to feel sad or lonely when you leave behind what's familiar for the new and unknown. Be patient, and trust Jesus to help you adjust to your new situation and use it to help you grow. He hasn't changed, and He never will--He will always care for you and be with you, no matter what. Today's Key Verse:I am with you always, even to the end of the age. No one wants to be a drug addict. No one would choose that for themselves. It is a really hard life. Each day is spent worrying about how you can get more drugs or get the money to get more drugs. After the addiction takes hold, it no longer feels like a choice to take the drug. It is a need. The most tragic piece is that as the addiction takes hold, the risk of death by overdose increases as well. Today's guest, Christine, has a tragic story of two sons, Kurt and Austin. Kurt began using marijuana as a teen as a way to feel normal. Kurt told his mom that for the first time in his life by using marijuana, he felt comfortable in his own skin. Austin followed in big brother's footsteps and began using marijuana. While playing video games with a friend at the age of 17, Austin was offered a pill to crush and inhale. He did so, but was then 'forced' to do a second pill by the drug dealer who lived in the apartment. When Austin began showing signs of an overdose, the dealer threatened to kill anyone who dialed 911. By the next morning, it was too late. This started a quest for Christine, a quest to prevent death by drug overdose. She has spent the last ten years working to decrease overdose deaths. She has been an advocate for overdose awareness and harm reduction for teens. Christine was also involved in getting the Good Samaritan Act revised in Canada to provide immunity to those who call 911 in an overdose situation. Since Austin's death, Kurt's battle with addiction became more and more severe.  He never got over his little brother's death and continued to blame himself. Kurt was a troubled soul who eventually died of an overdose himself last year.  Now, Christine says she is just tired. She is tired of the fighting the battle against drug overdose. Both of her boys are now gone, and she is working to find a new purpose for her life. Maybe she will continue working to fight against substance abuse or maybe her life will go in a new direction, but whatever she chooses, I know that her ability to keep helping others will be an inspiration to me and so many others.

How many times have you heard, “The truth hurts”?   It does hurt…   But it also helps.    Case in point: San Diego Padres catcher, Austin Nola.    Austin was dealt the hard truth not too long ago, but instead of balling up in a corner, he decided to ball out…in a completely different position.    On today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I sit down with Austin and unpack one of the greatest stories of perseverance in sports.   Austin was seeing the writing on the wall with his professional baseball career, but he decided to pick up the eraser and make a major shift. Next thing you know, he was coming up clutch in the 2022 MLB Playoffs.   In this latest episode, Austin and I talk about what he…    Credits for being able to come up clutch in the 2022 MLB Playoffs Did after getting feedback that he wasn't good enough to live out his dream to be a MLB Shortstop Does to perfect his craft as a husband, father, and athlete while constantly being on the road    …and so much more.   If you want to learn from one the best when it comes to overcoming failure and adversity, then lock in to today's episode.   [00:01 - 07:55] Introducing Austin to the show   Austin's most embarrassing moment Austin's background, story, and professional journey   [07:56 - 17:16] What Austin credits for being able to come up clutch in the 2022 MLB Playoffs   Context: 2022 Playoffs, he's up with the bases loaded Austin's mindset: “I'm gonna get a hit right here” Austin saw the situation, recognized it, and knew that he prepared for it every single day. When he got to the situation, he just stuck with his plan When Austin got to two strikes, he reminded himself that he's been there before, he knew he prepared for it, and believed he could get that hit He practiced being down in the count with two strikes and forced himself to like being in this tough situation Practice for clutch moments, so when you get in them, you're not surprised.  Austin was able to believe in himself in that moment because of how much he prepared being in that moment   [17:17 - 34:48] What Austin's mindset was after getting feedback that he wasn't good enough to live out his dream to be a MLB Shortstop   He told himself there might be another way to get what I want (i.e. catching) Key mindset he adopted: if I just learn something every day that I have no clue about, that's going to take me much farther than achieving a certain outcome (i.e. play in the Big Leagues) Austin wasn't quitting. He was just shifting course. Take the EMOTION out of it and come to understand the FACTS Seek out someone you trust to give you the honest TRUTH The key behind Austin's mindset to “learning something every day”: CLARITY of self. Austin wanted to become something greater than a baseball player (he had a long-term perspective) Where this came from: faith, reading a lot, and being around great people Make simple decisions daily - that will help you have more joy on your journey   [34:49 - 47:17] What Austin does to perfect his craft as a husband, father, and athlete while constantly being on the road   Be present - put the Lord first Helpful skill that Austin learned to stay present: stop the flow of what you want to say / do and then listen and repeat back what they said and sit with it  Clarifying my values DAILY - I start there and let the rest just happen Reading the Bible Pray Keep things simple: complication is the devil. [47:18 - 53:37] Wrapping Up Austin's BIG domino How to connect with Austin   KEY QUOTES “One hard truth can change your life. Be willing to receive it.” - Austin Nola “It's not about the outcome. It's about the process.” - Austin Nola “Make simple decisions daily.” - Austin Nola “Complication is the devil.” - Austin Nola “Don't get caught up in achieving something so great that you forget about the people who are making your greatness possible.” - Austin Nola   CONNECT WITH AUSTIN Instagram: @austin.nola   CONNECT WITH J.R.  Facebook: @jamesJRreid Instagram: @jamesjrreid LinkedIn: in/jamesjrreid/ Twitter: @jamesJRreid Website: jamesreid.com For Men Only - Check out The Clutch Club™️: jamesreid.com/club   RATE & REVIEW this episode on Apple: https://jamesreid.com/review   SHARE this episode with someone who wants to be challenged, pushed, and positioned to come up clutch more often.   SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss out on any new episodes and Special Guests!   LISTEN to previous episodes on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, Google or whatever podcast platform you prefer!

When Austin and Spencer got together, it makes perfect sense that those two guys would figure something out. First, we're going to talk about you. I want to find out about you. Specifically, you live in the Denver area, is that true? Yes. I'm a little bit South of Denver in Castle Pines, Colorado. You were born and raised in Colorado, correct? Born and raised and I tell everyone I will live and die here as well. Why Colorado? I don't want to say sell me on Colorado because you don't want more people moving there, but what do you love about Colorado? It's funny you said that. I do always tell them. I'm like, "People, it's horrible here. No more people come." Born and raised and my family is here. It's all I've ever known and all I've ever lived. I am a creature of habit, but I can be that way because every job that I've had in my career for several years now has had some travel involved in it. It's pretty extensive travel. I still see all parts of the country. I still get to get out and spread my wings, but Colorado is special to me. [caption id="attachment_4278" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Real Estate Technology: Take that leap and don't be afraid to make changes in your professional life.[/caption]   The number one reason is my family is here. Particularly, my sister, who lives about five minutes down the street from me. She has two girls. I have two girls. They're all a year apart from each other. They go to school together. I always say, "I would live and die here," with the disclaimer that if she decides for some reason to get up and move, then I would follow her. You both are probably saying the same thing about Colorado. All is good. You're going to stay there. I asked this question a lot to people when we talk about where they grew up. Give me the biggest misconception about your home state. Every time people hear Colorado, they say skiing. All you do is ski. People ask me all the time if I ski, and I did as a younger kid. I had to come to grips with the fact that if I'm being honest with myself, I don't like skiing. I'm not going to do it anymore. The biggest misconception is people think Colorado is all about skiing, where in fact, it's more of an outdoorsy type of state. We have our Colorado mountains that are famous for skiing, but people go there just as much in the summer and other seasons than they do in the winter. It's a year-round type of state. We have...

When Austin is in a scenario where he is marketing and he removes himself from his attachments of doing it for six years, he is able to look past his ego and “considerations” about what kind of a marketer he is. Although you may have many transferrable skills from your past experiences, it's important to acknowledge that you are in a fresh craft and learning scenario. On a similar note, John had his ass humbly handed to him by a lady who goes by the name of Michelle who was legally blind when he started jujitsu for the first time. Chronic inflammation creates reactive oxygen species that damage DNA, cellular proteins, and lipids. This type of inflammation plays a key role in the development of many diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. The immune system is the body's natural defense system. It does not reside in one single part of the body—rather, it is made up of a network of cells, molecules, tissues, and organs working together to protect the body. The most crucial part of this entire podcast? When Austin and I break down the what and the why behind increased inflammation and decreased immunity. #98: Six-Figure Freelancing: The Benefits of Selling Strategy and Outcomes, with Austin Church

Deliberate Freelancer

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2021 47:30

Today’s guest is Austin Church from Knoxville, Tennessee. Austin helps e-commerce founders stand out online with their brand strategy. He also coaches freelance creatives.   After Austin got laid off in spring 2009, during the U.S. recession, he became a freelance copywriter. Does Austin consider himself an agency? Not exactly. He likes to pull in other creatives as necessary, and he serves as the project manager. He calls it the “antique shop” model — bigger antique shops don’t own all the antiques; they provide the space for other dealers, sell their products and earn a commission.   When he first started freelancing, Austin wasn’t great at keeping tabs on his income and expenses, and he didn’t save for or pay his quarterly taxes. When his accountant sister fired him as a client, it was a wakeup call. The book “Profit First” by Mike Michalowicz helped Austin figure out a better way to handle his money, mainly by getting several checking accounts and allocating each one toward certain things, like quarterly taxes.   Austin is also a fan of the book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. Clear says if you make habits obvious and easy, they’re more likely to stick. That resonated with Austin and helped him institute some better business and personal systems.   One system he highly recommends is to create email templates, especially when you’re asking clients for referrals. After a project goes well, at the end, when the client is happy, customize that referral template quickly and email it to your client.   Austin also recommends tracking every client and project lead imaginable and having a simple way to track them. Check in with that spreadsheet every week to see what leads you need to follow up on. It can take several “touches” or interactions with a potential client before you land a project, and without those multiple check-ins you could lose out on great projects and clients.   Austin says we have to put in a statistically significant number of activities. We often give up too soon. But, for example, if you are using Instagram to get clients, you need to have conversations with 100 people, not three.   Austin builds his business on selling strategy. He recognized that about 3 out of every 10 clients know exactly what they want, and he helps them with that. But most are unclear. For example, they might ask for a new website, but what they really need is an entire marketing strategy.   Austin started offering strategy, or strategic planning, which he now calls a “wayfinding workshop.” After talking with the client, he gets the sense of whether they’re lacking clarity and need strategic help. If they’re not willing to pay for that, it’s a red flag for him and isn’t a fit for him as a client.   He also sells “strategy retainers” where he meets with clients every two weeks to work on their strategy. With those packages, he’s not responsible for the implantation phase. He says most freelancers probably skew toward one or the other — they either like the strategy or the implementation. But going back and forth between the two with the same client can cause whiplash.   When Austin sees other freelancers struggling in their freelance business, their challenges often fall under one of the six 6 Ps: positioning, packaging, pricing, pipeline, psychology, process.   Biz Bites: Get a Text Expander App (atext) and Don’t Open Your Email Until 11 a.m.   Resources:   Austin’s website and his free freelance course: AustinLChurch.com   Austin on Twitter   Austin on LinkedIn   Episode #79 of Deliberate Freelancer: Six-Figure Freelancing: Consistently Sending LOIs and Using Upwork, with Laura Pennington Briggs   Episode #80 of Deliberate Freelancer: Six-Figure Freelancing: Writing B2B Tech Content, with Satta Sarmah Hightower   Episode #81 of Deliberate Freelancer: Six-Figure Freelancing: Focus on a Niche and Partner with Other Freelancers, with Lynne Testoni   Episode #82 of Deliberate Freelancer: Six-Figure Freelancing: Embracing an Entrepreneurial Mindset, with Gresham Harkless   Book “Profit First” by Mike Michalowicz   Book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear   Book “The Business of Expertise” by David C. Even on days when he trained alone, he had reports from the group as to how the workouts went, ways to attack them, and scores to chase. When Austin finally got the news that he had qualified for Regionals again, he admitted to me that he felt that he “underperformed” and was not happy with his Open performance. This biggest thing I took from that conversation was that he was learning from the experience and ready to put it behind him. If it was only Austin in qualifying position for Regionals again, he may not have felt as strongly about his lack of performance. But because all his training partners that he usually bests finished above him on the leaderboard, his perspective seems obvious, and serves as free motivation for future opportunity during training. He was so honest and open about the challenges he’s faced as an art teacher and an artist - never enough time or money, a learning disability that made school difficult, and lack of business knowledge. Austin faced those head-on and took a leap to pursue his dream of being an artist. Austin Fabinski is an artist from the Detroit Metropolitan Area in Michigan. He earned his BA from Oakland University with a K-12 Art Education certification. He has been teaching art to all ages for the past 5 years. In 2019 he quit full-time teaching to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist. He currently teaches private and small group art lessons and spends most days in the studio painting. His work is focused on animals. They are where he finds the most joy. Austin works primarily in acrylic and watercolor, as these media allow him to paint quickly. He offers his original work along with prints and commissions. When Austin is not teaching or painting, he spends time at the gym, walking his dogs, on the lake, or just hanging with friends and family. I love how open he was about working multiple jobs just to stay afloat and the frustration of earning more as a part time server than a full-time teacher. Ugh. I also keep hearing from artists I speak to and from other podcasts I listen to, how helpful mentors and coaches can be. I’m so glad Austin’s mentor in business has helped him with the shift to full-time artist and I hope he hangs in there through this pandemic. WHAT YOU’LL HEAR IN TODAY’S 15-MINUTE HUDDLE: What does it really take to play at the next level? From youth sports to professional sports, every next step requires an athlete to grow and mature. In today's huddle, I talk with Austin McCarthy, who was just named Captain of the Topeka Pilots, a team in the Northern American Hockey League. Austin candidly shares with us his insights into his hockey life as he follows his dream to one day play in the NHL. Austin and I discuss... His journey from Michigan to Kansas to play hockey at the next level. How important his relationship with his sports mom has been in his hockey journey. Why playing for the love of the game has to be a priority to play at the next level. What has surprised him the most about moving to the next levels? What advice he would give to young athletes. Where his hockey skills are taking him (hint: Russia). How important is a pregame routine and how the team talks about the mental side of the game? How the energy/chemistry of the team matters. Meet Austin McCarthy: From his Sports Mama, Erica McCarthy Howe I adore most from Austin is his passion and dedication. I have never in my life seen someone as driven as Austin. He truly gives 1000% always.. he strives to be the best he can be and he pushes himself beyond what I could ever do or what I would ever expect him to do... He is conscious of his health from what he eats and drinks to his workouts and skates. Every day he amazes me! He has had several hardships and struggles, but he is always determined to become better and stronger. When Austin was 10, I remember saying in an interview about him that I see anything is possible for him...I think he can do anything he puts in mind to and that he's an amazing kid.
