Zea's out this week, but the rest of the NAFC crew is here to pick up the chaos. Gibbs shares his thoughts on the Severance finale (no spoilers… maybe), and gives a shoutout to the creepy slow-burn vibes of The Roottrees Are Dead. Izzy vents about his ongoing frustrations with Dragon Age: Inquisition, because nothing says fun like bad pacing and clunky mechanics. Meanwhile, Mox boots up Robocop: Rogue City and is already knee-deep in justice and cybernetic mayhem. To wrap things up, the gang dives into their final pick for the WTF Did I Just Watch theme with Mad God—a grotesque, stop-motion fever dream that left them all a little disturbed and very confused. Perfect way to close out the theme. Support us on Patreon!
Today, we look at some of the great "pure cinema" movies with little to no dialogue. Now listen-dialogue is great. Dialogue is cinematic. But to scale the heights, a moviemaker needs to know how to communicate cinematically (image + sound) without using dialogue as a crutch to convey information. Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill looks at F.W. Murnau's 1924 masterpiece The Last Laugh (with only two intertitles for the entire movie), avant garde master Stan Brakhage's The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes, Ron Fricke's 70mm essay movie Baraka, the incredible Ukranian movie all in sign language The Tribe, and Phil Tippet's stop motion mind blower Mad God as examples of movies whose power comes from their commitment to what Alfred Hitchcock called "pure cinema".

It's episode 286…and I will make the land desolate so that your enemies who settle it shall be appalled by it. Mad God (2021) is the singular vision of Phil Tippett, the stop motion genius behind Star Wars' AT-ATs and RoboCop's ED-209. Over the course of 30 years he slowly created what some believe to be his opus–Mad God–a nightmarish film with very little clear story, but an awful lot of grotesque imagery. We talk about a film that is both an impressive technical exercise and a hollow procession of misery, the nauseating levels of skill required to produce it, whether we'd be sad if Gromit died and whether the individual behind dozens of screens showing a babbling baby's face should give more thought to workplace safety. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Your land shall become a desolation and your cities a ruin. Next month, we're watching a couple of ‘Space Madness' films - Solaris (1972) and Aniara (2018).

This week on Toilet Radio we're joined by Timothy Faust to talk about Phil Tippet's staggering work of artistic genius, MAD GOD. Completed over the course of 30 years, MAD GOD is a stop-motion nightmare that, while not a traditional horror movie, contains some of the most hellish and dread-inducing imagery you'll ever see. This movie answers the millennia-old question: What happens when the Holy Lord promises to fuck your whole shit up? But that's not all - we're talking about rasslin', getting into heavy metal as a kid, donating your kidneys, and Health Justice Now. A request from Tim: Has your life been altered by medical debt?
