“The film you have just seen was an improvisation.” – Shadows (1959)This week, returning guest Robert Bellissimo joins us for a conversation on John Cassavetes' Shadows,, a landmark of American independent cinema. Shot on the streets of New York with a semi-improvised style and a raw, jazz-infused energy, Shadows broke all the rules and opened new possibilities for personal filmmaking in the U.S.We explore how Cassavetes challenged Hollywood norms, foregrounded race and identity in ways ahead of its time, and crafted a film that still feels immediate and alive decades later. Shadows isn't just a turning point in film history, it's the spark that lit the indie movement.Episode NotesShadows (1959) was written and directed by John CassavetesSelected to the National Film Registry in 1993Known for:Pioneering an improvisational, vérité-inspired approach to filmmakingDepicting interracial relationships in a candid and progressive lightLaunching the American independent film movementDiscussion topics include:Cassavetes' creative process and legacyThe tension between scripted and unscripted storytellingNew York City as a character in the filmHow Shadows opened doors for generations of indie filmmakersFeaturing returning guest:Robert Bellissimo, actor, filmmaker, and host of Robert Bellissimo at the Movies Follow the Show:TwitterInstagramWebsite Music by Mike Natale

In this episode of the show we are adding the third instalment into our Elaine May May where we talk about her 1976 Mikey and Nicky. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about the arduous and crisis-laden production history of this movie, how Elaine May channeled the spirit of rogue indie filmmaking and how her movie works as a bridge between Cassavetes and Scorsese. We also dive deep into the metaphorical plane of the movie and talk about it as an anti-gangster picture, a companion piece to The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Husbands and Mean Streets and also wonder what it tells us about Elaine May's own relationship with the moviemaking business. Susan Oxtoby, Director of Film and Senior Film Curator at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), discusses the work of the great Belgian-French film maker Agnes Varda (1928-2019) with host Richard Wolinsky. The first major biography of Agnes Varda, A Complicated Passion: The Life and Work of Agnes Varda by Carrie Rickey, was published in 2024 and will come out in paperback on August 12, 2025. Agnes Varda began her career as a stills photographer and became a director with La Point Courte (1954), having seen very few films in her life. She went on to international fame with Cleo from 5 to 7 and Vagabond, but her late life films The Beaches of Agnes and Faces, Places established her as one of the most important directors of the modern era. All the films discussed in this interview (except the recent documentary Viva Varda!) are available to stream on the Criterion app, save for Faces, Places, which can be streamed on Kanopy. "Opening Night" is a film about acting and a film about aging. Trying to make sense of a role is hard when you are drowning yourself in alcohol. It's hard to cope with loss when your career is on the line. Gena Rowlands, who plays the lead character, Myrtle, is pure tour de force acting. This film is a masterclass of not only acting but cinema overall. John Cassavetes directed this film and he broke the rules of cinema with this film. It shows that you can do whatever you want however you want as long as you make it sense to yourself. To make something of your own, you gotta make sure it even makes sense. I love that Cassavetes made a film where Rowland's characters went through hard trials and tribulations. In this podcast, I talk about the amazing acting played by Rowlands and the cast included. I talk about how Cassavetes uses the space of not only the stage but the venue itself to create a feel of the audience being there witnessing Rowlands act and as well Cassavetes himself. I also talk about how all this acting and meaning derives from what I feel is a strong screenplay written by Cassavetes. You witness the layers and personalities of the characters and how they work with one another. This is a film where there are sharp turns you gotta be ready for it.Four out of four tokes.

**** [Retro Re-issue Alert!] **** Turns out it wasn't such a great idea to use Le Tigre's "What's Yr Take on Cassavetes?" as our podcast's theme song in 2019 and 2020! Anyway, Spotify (and presumably Le Tigre) don't seem to think so.  Accordingly, please find the attached re-issue of one of our foundational episodes, minus the intro music + a couple of words of greeting from Elise.  Consider it a fragment shored against our (Julie) Ruin.  First issued: August 23, 2019 This week's episode serves as both a prolegomenon to our imminent Hollywood Studios Year By Year series and as a wistful look back to Dave's teen years, when he picked up Ethan Mordden's freewheeling speed date with Old Hollywood History and discovered a new way to split the difference between Adornian culture industry theory and auteurist ontology. Journey back to a time when oligopoly really meant something and most entertainment companies weren't somehow beholden to Disney. We quote from and quibble with Mordden's characterizations of the quintessential qualities of Paramount, MGM, Warner Brothers, Fox, RKO, and Universal (Dave gets particularly riled up about yet another slight to the sacred memory of Carl Laemmle Jr.).

EPISODE 71 - “STEVE & NAN's FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1970s” - 1/20/2024 The 1970s was a decade that saw the rise of the auteur. Filmmakers like Scorsese, Coppola, Cassavetes, Altman, Lumet, and DePalma hit their stride and brought to the screen their specific vision and stylized films. It was a very experimental era where boundaries were pushed and once-taboo topics were explored. It became a creative high point and gave us some iconic movies. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** When screen legend GENA ROWLANDS passed away last month at the age of 94, she left behind a film and TV legacy that will undoubtedly influence artists for decades to come. She was an acting titan who changed the way modern audiences looked at acting. From her historic independent movies with husband JOHN CASSAVETES to mainstream Hollywood to powerful performances in iconic television films, Rowlands' performances were always honest, complicated, and emotionally raw. There was just no one like her; and there never will be again. This week, we pay tribute to her endearing legacy on and off the screen. Felicia Maroni (Seeing Faces in Movies) joins the show to discuss the first half of John Cassavetes' filmography: Shadows (1958); Too Late Blues (1961); A Child is Waiting (1963); Faces (1968); Husbands (1970); and Minnie & Moskowicz (1971). When we talk about John Cassavetes, we're talking about the history of American independent movies, from what preceded and influenced the movement, to how the format adapted and was deeply influenced by the style of indie auteurs like Cassavetes. By studying this filmmaking tradition, we can give shape to a whole world of cinema crafted outside the system and trace every step of contemporary productions back to their root source. By working outside the system and against the market, Cassavetes created a new system and a new market. We explore the eccentricities of this improvisational and naturalistic filmmaker who changed movies forever, one Opening Night, one Face, one Husband, one Chinese Bookie, and one Woman Under the Influence at a time. Stay tuned as Felicia will return for the second half of our series, and some of the most influential indie films of all time, next month.

It's a sad day around the Wilhelm headquarters as we finish up our dive into the films of John Cassavetes. We wrap up with a look at "Gloria," and "Love Streams." Cassavetes was interested in exploring love, and the complicated, weird things we are as humans--and we love all of you for joining us on this journey. There's other stuff in this episode, too, but, really, it's all about Cassavetes. Remember: "Love is a stream, it's continuous, it doesn't stop."      Keep in touch and read more at whydoesthewilhelmscream.com on instagram @whydoesthewilhelmpod and twitter @whywilhelm Find out more about upcoming Fort Worth Film Club screenings and events at fortworthfilmclub.com and @fortworthfilm Support the next generation of film lovers at reelhousefoundation.org and on facebook reelhousefoundation Artwork by @_mosla_

On this episode, he talks about how he “starts slow” when developing an approach to a character, letting “things drop into my psyche.” He pinpoints directorial characteristics of John Schlesinger (director of “Midnight Cowboy”) that worked well for him, details a scrappy fight scene with Jonathan Rhys Meyers on his latest film “Mercy,” reminisces about working with Cassavetes on “Love Streams” the play, and much more! “Mercy” is Select Theaters now, On Digital May 19, and On Demand June 2.
