Welcome back to the Video Store! Valentine's Day is almost upon us and if you're here looking for movie selections instead of out buying flowers or making dinner reservations, then sir or madam, I salute you. For this week's episode of the show I've picked four movies that feature unconventional relationships. After browsing the stores aisles looking for this week's film recommendations, I ended up rewatching all four of these movies (a couple of which I hadn't seen in decades) and for the most part they have all aged well. Harold and Maude (1971)Harold is a young adult obsessed with death, while Maude is a 79-year-old woman infatuated with life. The two share a hobby in common — attending the funerals of strangers — and soon this odd couple forms a close relationship. Wikipedia describes this film as a “romantic black comedy drama,” which only begins to describe it. It's sweet, it's funny, and it's emotional. While critics originally hated it, the film as gone on to appear in many “best of” film lists. Something Wild (1986)The last person you would expect a New York banker like Charlie to get involved with is a carefree person like Lulu, but after she kidnaps the yuppie for a weekend of reckless fun, Charlie finds the adventure exciting… until things get out of hand. When Lulu's husband discovers what the pair has been up to, he is none too happy. Someone — or perhaps everyone — has been lying. This not-to-miss thriller stars Jeff Daniels as Charlie, Melanie Griffith as Lulu, and a terrifying Ray Liotta has Lulu's husband, Ray. After Hours (1985)Have you ever had one of those days? After work, Paul Hackett heads to a local diner where he meets a woman named Marcy. The two exchange numbers and later, she invites him over to her apartment. This starts off a chain of events that will have Paul running around the streets of New York from one mess to the next. Before the end of the night his face ends up on wanted posters, he's chased by an angry mob, and he becomes involved in a city wide crime ring. It's a night that Paul will never forget — or maybe, survive. Featuring a star-packed cast including Griffin Dunne (An American Werewolf in London), Rosanna Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O'Hara, Bronson Pinchot, Dick Miller, and even Cheech and Chong. Directed by Martin Scorsese.Valley Girl (1983)Randy (Nicholas Cage) is a punk rocker from Hollywood. Julie (Deborah Foreman) is a Valley Girl. Their worlds are complete opposites and it seems that everybody and everything will try and stop them from getting together, but sometimes, love finds a way. This classic 80s film was directed by Martha Coolidge and will take you back to the sights, sounds, and music of the 1980s.Thanks for checking out the podcast. If you don't have plans this Valentine's Day, you can have a great time renting and watching one of these films. And if you would prefer to get out of the house, you can always drop by a stranger's funeral. You never know who you'll meet! This is a public episode. In the final episode of the latest season – Neil's solo adventure – Neil talks to filmmaker, writer and comedian Scott Tanner Jones about collecting physical media. In an episode with a similar approach to the previous one with Kat Flint-Nicol, Neil brings to the podcast a conversation about themes and ideas that permeate his thinking around a particular area of film, and wider popular culture. In this episode Neil and Scott discuss their approaches to collecting films (and records) in physical form. The conversation takes in areas such as curating what you watch, interest in particular physical media boutique labels, how physical media isn't the be all and end all, cataloguing the year in film in different ways, studio interest and care in their back catalogues, Scott's favourite places in his adopted hometown of LA to watch movies, the demand on our eyeballs and they answer the question, is David Lynch quirky? Films discussed in this episode include Cocoon, Something Wild, Midnight Cowboy, E.T., Midnight Run, MaXXXine, La Chimera, Evil Does Not Exist and Hit Man. To close out the episode and season, Neil shares some of his thoughts on his favourite releases of 2024 so far, and his first half of the year in film watching more broadly. — You can listen to The Cinematologists for free wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

Sam and Beth roll it back to discuss this quintessential 80s classic directed by Jonathan Demme. It could be argued that this film was responsible for launching the careers of Melanie Griffith, Jeff Daniels, and Ray Liotta —who would all go on to long success as perennial A-Listers (RIP Ray ❤️). It also solidified the status of artists like David Byrne, and Laurie Anderson in popular culture as pioneers and innovators in music. The soundtrack is extensive with 29 songs featuring The Feelies and an iconic performance by Sister Carol (one of Demme's favorite artists and who he also featured in Married to the Mob). We go heavy into the discussion about what defines the true 80s aesthetic, and the authentic early 80s experience —something we think that filmmakers frequently get wrong. This film is a beautiful snapshot of a particularly special time in NYC, where people of all walks of life were creating a scene and making things happen. NYC was going through a time of reimagining and reinvention. Demme's film unfolds to reveal an experience that is one of thousands of tales from the city, and provides the texture and sound that is the closest thing to actually living it. Actor Jeff Daniels is always writing. Plays, songs, a script or two. Even in interviews you get the sense the Michigan native is trying to relay the stories of his life in a way he'd find compelling as a reader, or listener. Bystander — as a viewer.  He joins us this week around the latest chapter of his crime series American Rust (12:30), reprising his role as Police Chief Del Harris. It's a performance inspired by his midwestern upbringing in Chelsea, Michigan (16:06) and the formative teachings of theater director Marshall W. Mason (21:20). Then, Daniels reflects on his arrival to New York City in 1976 (24:06), performing in Lanford Wilson's play Fifth of July (27:20), and his early on-screen roles in Jonathan Demme's Something Wild (31:10), Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo (34:20), and Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale (44:20). On the back-half, we walk through his years making The Newsroom (51:48), working with screenwriter (and then playwright) Aaron Sorkin (53:20), and how the two of them reimagined Atticus Finch and To Kill a Mockingbird for both Broadway (59:49) and what he calls “a country at a crossroads” (1:05:33). To close, we sit with the utility of good writing in this fraught era (1:10:30), and a musical tribute to his late father, Robert (1:15:32). We spend most of this episode in two locations: at the clubby club with Jen, Audrey…and Charlie and then we're back in Capeside with Jen and Dawson. At the clubby club, we're privileged to witness some of the most cringe scenes where Charlie hits on Joey, Audrey trying to get some random bro to make out with Joey, and the biggest cringe moment - Joey performing “I Want You to Want Me” with Charlie's band. Meanwhile, Dawson brings Jen “home” to "meet" his mom whom she knows and watched grow up. So, what is happening right now?

We were going to introduce Jonathan Demme's SOMETHING WILD by saying that not a lot of movies start with the kidnapping of the main character in the first five minutes, but according to Wikipedia's “Films about Kidnapping” list, that isn't true. And our main character, straitlaced banker Charlie Driggs (Jeff Daniels), isn't exactly kicking and screaming when he's picked up by Lulu (Melanie Griffith), an attractive Soho hipster with a Louise Brooks bob. What follows is a genre-defying film that is part road movie, part off-kilter rom-com, and part suburban nightmare crime thriller, featuring a truly terrifying debut performance by Ray Liotta. Aren't movie weddings SUCH fun?? :) Well it certainly depends on who's attending of course along with the current emotional states of the families involved.  This highly acclaimed melodrama from fifteen years ago focuses on the Buchman's, a family which MIGHT not be in the best place at this time despite their oldest daughter Rachel....getting married. (Hence the title)  Rachel is played by Rosemarie DeWitt and the potential monkey wrench in her wedding weekend is the return of her sister Kym who is still in recovery after battling drug addiction for most of her life.  Kym is played by Anne Hathaway delivering a shattering performance which earned her an Oscar nomination.  What follows is a crazy weekend filled with memorable reunions, loads of music, and some intense arguments.  This was directed by the late, great Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Something Wild) towards the end of his storied career.  It also stars Bill Irwin, Debra Winger, Anna Deavere Smith, and Tunde Adebimpe along with several others.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Today on The Neil Haley Show, Neil Haley interviews Ray Liotta Intense was the word for Ray Liotta. He specialized in psychopathic characters who hide behind a cultivated charm. Even in his nice-guy roles in Field of Dreams (1989) and Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), you get the impression that something is smoldering inside of him. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, and was adopted by Mary (Edgar), a township clerk, and Alfred Liotta, an auto parts store owner. He studied acting at the University of Miami, where he became friends with Steven Bauer (Scarface (1983), Thief of Hearts (1984)). He spent his first years acting in TV: Another World (1964), a TV movie and several short-lived series. He broke into movies with the black comedy Something Wild (1986), which garnered him rave reviews. Originally unable to get a reading, he was recommended for the part by Melanie Griffith (then married to Bauer). Following the success Something Wild (1986), he received more offers in the "psycho" vein, but refused them to avoid being typecast. Instead, he made "little movies" like Dominick and Eugene (1988), which earned him standing as an actor's actor, and Field of Dreams (1989), whose success always surprised him. When he heard Martin Scorsese was casting Goodfellas (1990), he lobbied hard for the part of Henry Hill. The film's huge success brought him wide popularity and garnered him star billing in future films such as Article 99 (1992), Unlawful Entry (1992), and Unforgettable (1996).

Hey, a Nicolas Cage movie! Where he plays Dracula! Sounds awesome ... but maybe not so much in practice. We also discuss the hospital documentary "De Humani Corporis Fabrica." But the real superfun comes from a discussion of the great Jonathan Demme movie, "Something Wild." Look, an '80s comedy we love! Timestamps: 16:13: "Renfield" 41:12 "De Humani Corporis Fabrica" 1:13:22 "Something Wild" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast.
