This episode is brought to you by the Change Makers Certification Program! Lisa Even knows firsthand that leadership isn't about tracking metrics or delivering perfect PowerPoint slides—it's about creating a culture where people choose to show up, engage, and make an impact. Early in her career, Lisa thought doing “all the right things” as a leader—tracking numbers, holding others accountable, and saying “good job” often—would be enough. But when her engagement scores landed squarely in the middle ofthe pack, she realized something had to change. Instead of giving up, Lisa redefined her approach. Lisa's first job was at a tiny café, serving breakfast and coffee to farmers, truckers, and locals. That experience taught her an invaluable lesson: meet people where they are. You can't pour a big enough cup of joe or fake-smile someone into being happier—they'll see right through it. And at a coffee shop, they'll definitely let you know! Real connection requires a calm nerve, a genuine effort to understand others, and the ability to see eachother as human. She carried those lessons into the corporate workplace. Lisa replaced rigidity with autonomy, task lists withauthentic connection and curiosity, and top-down accountability with shared ownership. She asked herself, What if leadership starts with a Good Ripple Effect? At first, it felt aspirational. But Lisa quickly realized that by shifting her own attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs, she was influencing others to do the same. One step at a time, her team began transforming their environment and building a culture worth keeping. The results? Turnover dropped, engagement scores soared, and the team thrived. Today, Lisa helps organizations do just that. Through hilariously relatable stories (cue Paul and the company potluck), actionable strategies, and practical, repeatable frameworks (because let's be honest, leaders don'thave time for fluff), Lisa guides leaders and teams to foster leadership presence, build human connection, and drive meaningful engagement. The result? High-performing teams and workplace cultures that balance purpose, productivity, and profit—creating a Good Ripple Effect that lasts. Join us for an inspiring conversation with Lisa Even as we explore the art of experimenting—whether it's in work, life, or those everyday moments. In this episode, we talk about the importance of trying new things, embracing failure, and finding joy in the process. Life is an experiment, and each step is an opportunity to grow and enjoy the journey. Plus, enjoy a lighthearted story about Paul and potlucks, reminding us that sometimes the best things come when we step out of our comfort zones. Tune in and get ready to live in the lab of life!

Jordan explores the relationship between theory and experience through the lens of a quote he shared on LinkedIn recently. He makes a case for why both elements are essential - theory provides the framework for learning from experience, while testing theories through action leads to true wisdom. Drawing from his reading of "Demand-Side Sales 101" and the Jobs to be Done framework, Jordan encourages listeners to approach theories with curiosity and be willing to test new ideas, regardless of their source.

We as humans tend to stay where we are comfortable because it just feels good and it's too hard or painful to change. But what if we tried one new thing this month? Maybe a new recipe or medium? What if we tried watercolors instead of oils? Or started to take dance lessons or played the instrument we always wanted to play (the one we make our kids play) . Additionally, the pair discuss the importance of taking mini-retirements, cultivating gratitude, as well as share some podcasts and books that have helped them on their journey. Whether you're near the finish line or just beginning, don't wait to explore other possibilities that can elevate not only your FI journey but your life.

Series: Edible Schoolyards Episode Description: “School meals are part of the education day.” —Betsy Rosenbluth For far too long, the school lunchroom has been the butt of jokes and the source of dread for students and parents alike. Mention the words "cafeteria food" and visions of limp, gray mystery meat and rock-hard tater tots immediately come to mind. This pervasive stigma has reduced the lunchroom to a place where kids simply have to get through the meal as quickly as possible before rushing off to their next class. By changing the culture and elevating the dining experience, we can empower students to see the cafeteria as an extension of the classroom, where they can learn about nutrition, explore new flavors, and take pride in the food that fuels their growing bodies and minds. This week, we hear how we can transform the lunch room into a place of nourishment, community, and joy with Betsy Rosenbluth. Betsy is the Farm to School Director at Shelburne Farms, a nonprofit organization on a 1400-acre working farm in Vermont. For the past 10 years, Betsy has been spearheading efforts to expand farm-to-school programming across Vermont and support a national movement to transform the school food system. Stay tuned as Justine and Betsy talk about the importance of tailoring programs to local needs, overcoming supply chain challenges, empowering students to make informed choices about their food, the benefits of building partnerships, and how farm-to-school programs are inspiring long-term impacts. Connect with Betsy: Betsy is Co-Director of Vermont FEED, a nationally recognized farm-to-school partnership program of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont and Shelburne Farms. Betsy also coordinates the Vermont Farm to School & Early Childhood Network and the Northeast Farm to School Collaborative and serves on the Advisory Board of the National Farm to School Network. Prior to joining Shelburne Farms, Betsy helped establish the Burlington School Food Project and Education for Sustainability programs in Burlington schools. She also helped Vermont FEED draft and pass Vermont's first Farm to School bill and grant program. She led the effort to create a Lake Champlain museum on Burlington's waterfront with a nationally recognized youth employment program. Most recently, Betsy was Director of Projects and Interim Director at the Orton Family Foundation with a focus on community planning, development, and engagement in small cities and towns. It is amazing how many people reach out to us, saying things like, "I want to do _________ in the bedroom, but my spouse isn't open to it or doesn't want to try new things. What can I do?"It is important to recognize that we all come from different backgrounds and have different experiences growing up (or even as adults) that shape our thoughts, beliefs, and comfort levels when it comes to sexual intimacy. This means it's fairly common for couples to have different comfort levels regarding things in the bedroom, where one spouse might want to do or try things the other spouse does not feel comfortable with.In this episode, we talk about the things couples can do to approach this very sensitive topic and find a balance that works for both spouses. We also discuss why being open to new experiences in the bedroom can be a good thing. There is however a right and wrong away to approach this with your spouse. Hey, it's Amy Newmark with your Chicken Soup for the Soul. We've been talking all summer about how you can step outside your comfort zone and make your world bigger, and also feel empowered, energized, enthusiastic, and excited. Lots of good e words. We've heard about from our writers who tried lots of things that scared them, including parasailing, roller coasters, mud runs, zip lining and more. And today I have a story from you about an Albert Einstein impersonator who describes in fascinating detail his first and probably only time skydiving, and another story from someone who faced her fear of sharks, etc. and ended up communing with sea turtles as she tried snorkeling for the first time. SWM 135 - It's good to try new things. Check out the blog post here for more details and links. Most kids, when growing up, enter a picky stage at some point. Some when they're toddlers, some when they're young children, some when they become teenagers. When our 3rd or 4th kid entered this phase, everyone knew the response when they didn't want to eat something new that we'd made. “It's good to try new things.” They didn't have to eat it all but had to try it—a decent try, not a touch to the tongue followed by an exaggerated exclamation of disgust.Teaching children to at least give something new a fair shot, I think, has applications later on in life as well. I often talk to husbands and wives whose spouses simply will not try anything new in the bedroom. One will bring up an idea, and it's immediately shot down by the “picky” spouse—the one who is perfectly happy with the flavour of vanilla every night.Today, I want to talk about why I think it's good to try new things - not only when it comes to food, but also in the bedroom - or outside of the bedroom, depending on how much privacy you have. We're going to talk about the interplay between dopamine, controlled risk-taking, adventure and trust in marriages as it pertains to sex and more.Don't forget to participate in our BDSM survey - whether you engage in that sort of behaviour or not.Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and TwitterIf you'd like to discuss the questions as they come in, consider joining our private forum.Thank you to all our faithful supporters! If you like that there are no ads in our podcast and want to keep it that way, check out our support page for more info. Fluent Fiction - Mandarin Chinese: Spicy Lessons: Conquering the Fiery Flames of Life Find the full episode transcript, vocabulary words, and more:fluentfiction.org/spicy-lessons-conquering-the-fiery-flames-of-life Story Transcript:Zh: 在喧嚣的京城——北京,张伟独自一人,正坐在繁华的“炒作王”的角落。这是一家充满北京特色的家常菜餐馆,酸甜虾仁, 粉蒸肉, 老友炒鸭, 几乎所有的北京菜色都在这里。夜幕低垂,金黄的灯光洒向桌上,食物的香味弥漫整个餐厅。En: In the bustling capital city of Beijing, Zhang Wei sat alone in a corner of the busy "King of Stir-Fry" restaurant. This was a home-style restaurant full of Beijing specialties, serving dishes such as sweet and sour shrimp, steamed pork, stir-fried duck with old friend, and almost all the Beijing cuisines. As the night fell, golden lights shone on the table, and the aroma of the food filled the entire restaurant. En: Living in this busy metropolis, Zhang Wei had gotten used to going out alone. He picked up the menu and carefully chose his dinner for tonight. He was not good with spicy food and always ordered with great caution, afraid of making the same mistake again and ordering something too spicy for him to bear. En: However, his attention was diverted by the enticing aroma. Silently, he ordered a seemingly new dish - the signature dish of "King of Stir-Fry" called "Fiery Flames". This dish sparked his curiosity, and the description that it had "a unique flavor" made him unaware that it was actually extremely spicy. En: While waiting, Zhang Wei caught sight of other diners in the restaurant. Their joyful expressions filled him with anticipation for the upcoming "Fiery Flames". When the waiter brought the steaming dish to the table, a bright red chili pepper was prominently placed on top of the plate, instantly tightening his heart. En: But it was already too late, the spicy aroma of the chili pepper had already reached his palate. Zhang Wei only felt his mouth turning into a furnace, and sweat pouring down from his forehead. He couldn't believe he had made the same mistake again. Amid the awkward laughter from the audience, he lowered his head, sweat dripping down his face, feeling a deep sense of frustration and disappointment in his heart. En: Through the window, moonlight shone into the restaurant, bringing some encouragement to Zhang Wei. Deciding to put aside his ego, he told himself that the only way to overcome this mistake was perseverance, trial, and bravery. He crossed the wall in his heart and started to enjoy this dish that he loved and hated at the same time, with a smile on his face. En: The story ends here, and Zhang Wei's experience teaches us a valuable lesson in life. Everything in the world has its duality, there won't be dishes that are always too spicy to eat or sweets that are always satisfying. Only through self-adjustment and change can we adapt to the world, learn from mistakes, and grow through trying. A couple of years ago, was in a group tennis lesson. The instructor, an 84-year-old former HR director, started with an icebreaker game: Two Truths and a Lie. People said things like, I have two cats, I like oatmeal cookies, and I love to ride my bike. Stephanie shared, “I've written two books, been on MTV in my bikini, and was a contestant on a game show.” Everyone exclaimed, “Wow!” As the game continued, Stephanie hoped she inspired the next person to dig a little deeper, but it returned to I like dogs. She wondered, am I unusual? (Stephanie's truths were: she was on MTV in a bikini and had written two books.) Surely, other people must have wow moments. Yet, even her wow moments happened years ago. Stephanie decided it was time to change that. Soon after, she volunteered to join a radio host friend who was going to help out a nearby city that had experienced a devastating flood. It was a wow moment for her. Stephanie, a professional writer, planned to write a blog about it. Just after Christmas 2022, Stephanie's husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Four months later, he passed away. From that moment on, Stephanie committed to putting more wow moments into her life and she shares them in her . It is inspiring, and thought-provoking. Dottie Small is a role model to all whom she knows. Her mindset is that you are never too old and it's never too late to try new things and serve the Lord. In her 80's, she looks 25 years younger and has the energy of a 50-year-old! At 82, she started a podcast, Thoughts to Ponder. She has been a blogger for years. The Lord spoke to her that there was more for her to do to reach people. Her heart is to advance the Kingdom and to encourage believers to understand what it means to be a new creation. When Dottie began to walk in the power of the Spirit, she saw great change in her life. The Spirit opened her understanding of the Bible. The Holy Spirit leads her as she writes her blogs and teaches on her podcast. Dottie encourages us to “stay in our lane.” Don't try to do it all! Do one social media platform or one ministry at a time. Once you feel confident in that, then you can add another as God leads. We are never too young and never too old to serve God. Always have room in your life to help others in their faith and serve God no matter what your age. Run the race and throw off everything that hinders you so you can serve God and bring Him glory. Let our life align with the Word of God and hold on to Jesus. This will enable you to serve Him no matter if you are young or old. God enables us to do everything we are asked to do through His Spirit. God will bring people into your life to help you. Remind yourself that it is God who has a race for you, and He has plotted out the course. Thus, seek Him to see what path to take. And then depend on His wisdom and power to lead you.
