"That Never Happened": How Out-Of-Control Emotions Warps Memory

A Little Help For Our Friends

This episode talks about how mood, especially dysregulated emotions, affect memory. It explains why people with emotional issues may have such a different perspective and memory for things that happened in the past. If you're close to someone with big emotions, you've probably gotten into an argument with them about something you remember...very differently than they do. You bring up something that happened and they'll say "that never happened!", leaving you to question your whole reality. In this episode, Dr. Kibby delves into why the "that never happened" argument happens so often. What if your loved one is genuinely remembering a fight differently- and that difference isn't about manipulation, but about how your brain reconstructs trauma and emotion? This episode dives deep into the science of how mood, trauma, and dysregulation distort memory, often making "truth" feel entirely relative.Dr. Kibby discusses why borderline personality disorder, trauma, or anxiety see the world and their memories through a skewed lens, and how this impacts trust, communication, and conflict resolution. She describes frameworks like mood-congruent bias and affect-as-information, which explain how emotions activate specific memory networks, creating a battlefield of conflicting recollections. This episode also breaks down practical strategies for coming to a resolution when someone has a very different version of events. Learn how to respond when someone insists "that didn't happen," or accuses you of things you don't remember without gaslighting or invalidating their experience. You'll hear about the dangers of false memories, how negative content is more memorable, and why gaslighting often involves wielding power over someone's very sense of reality. If you've ever wondered whether their reality is "crazy" or if you're losing your mind, this episode will give you the understanding and tactics you need to foster compassion, clarity, and peaceful communication.Resources:KulaMind for support with loved ones with emotional issuesJoshi, G., Rathore, T., & Verma, K. In this episode, we dive deep into what it really takes to close a deal with one of the biggest investors in the UK, from the moment the cameras stop rolling to the final signature. Our guest walks us through the entire journey of negotiating with Steven Bartlett after appearing on Dragons Den, revealing why it took nearly a year to sign the deal that aired in a matter of minutes. We discuss the reality of managing investor relationships, why valuations become impossible to pin down when you're doubling month on month, and how monumental milestones kept shifting the goalposts during negotiations. They explain why Stephen isn't the kind of investor who grills every number but instead focuses on brand and storytelling, how the dynamic changes when you're suddenly managing someone else's money, and why accountability forces a business to grow up fast. We explore the difference between cutting corners as a scrappy startup and doing everything to regulation when you have an investor on board, why contracts need to be watertight, and how compromise is the foundation of any successful partnership. We also break down the reality of fundraising, from legal due diligence to financial and technical DD, why it takes far longer than anyone expects, and how to navigate difficult conversations without letting tension destroy the relationship. They share why every negotiation has its ups and downs, how to stay aligned when valuations are constantly shifting, and why finding the deal that works for everyone is about pulling different levers until you get there. If you're raising capital, negotiating with investors, or trying to understand what happens after the handshake moment on TV, this episode will give you the unfiltered truth about what it really takes to close a deal and build a genuine partnership. In the early hours of November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students—Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—were brutally stabbed to death in a rental house near campus in Moscow, Idaho. The crime scene was particularly disturbing: there were no signs of forced entry, and two surviving roommates were left unharmed in the same house. The case immediately drew national attention due to the shocking nature of the murders and the lack of suspects in the early days. A months-long investigation led law enforcement to Bryan Christopher Kohberger, a 28-year-old Ph.D. criminology student at Washington State University, located about ten miles from the crime scene. Using cell phone data, surveillance footage, and a DNA match from a knife sheath found at the scene, police arrested Kohberger in Pennsylvania on December 30, 2022, and later extradited him to Idaho to face four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary. As of April 2025, Kohberger's case is still moving through the pretrial phase. His defense has pursued multiple motions challenging evidence collection, including arguments over cellphone pings, surveillance footage, and the genealogical tracing used to identify him as a suspect. The trial has faced delays due to defense requests for more time and the complexities of handling large volumes of digital and forensic evidence. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, emphasizing the heinous nature of the crime and the calculated planning involved. Judge John Judge continues to rule on motions in limine, including what evidence will be allowed at trial. The case remains one of the most closely watched in the nation, with both legal teams preparing for what is expected to be a high-profile and emotionally charged trial, now tentatively slated to begin later in 2025.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.

The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) is facing a judicial review over its earlier decision not to formally investigate allegations tied to Jeffrey Epstein, with critics arguing that the agency may have mishandled or prematurely dismissed key information. The legal challenge centers on claims that the NCA failed to properly assess evidence and follow due process when it reviewed material related to Epstein-linked allegations, instead concluding that the information did not meet the threshold for a full criminal investigation. The push for judicial review comes amid a broader wave of renewed scrutiny following the release of Epstein-related files, which have triggered new investigations and raised questions about past decisions by UK authorities. Critics argue that what was previously dismissed as insufficient or already known may warrant reconsideration in light of newly surfaced context, fueling accusations that law enforcement bodies may have overlooked or downplayed serious allegations at the time.to contact me: bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Fresh Epstein Allegations Flagged to UK Crime Agency in 2024 — But No Investigation Was Opened | IBTimes UK

Creators behind a new interactive event coming to the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry have one goal in mind: fashion, but make it sustainable. Thrift Lab, which will feature an expert panel of speakers on sustainability and clothing, a textile mending workshop, a communal fashion project and a vintage market, will take place after hours at the museum from 6-10 p.m. April 30. It looks like a great event, and reminded the Block Club Chicago podcast team about conversations with the museums head curator, about MSI's history and what's in their archives that most people never get to see.  Host - Jon Hansen Guest - Dr. Voula Saridakis MORE ON THRIFT LAB HERE   Want to donate to our non-profit newsroom? CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch seven years ago, we've published more than 30,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 150,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

Protecting the House: Why Asset Management and "Storytelling" are Keys to HITRUST. (ep. 5)

Episode Summary In this episode of Practical Cybersecurity, we dive into the complex world of HITRUST certification. Often called the "gold standard" for healthcare security, HITRUST can be a daunting mountain to climb for small and large organizations alike. Jen Stone and experts Peter Briel (Privaxi) and Lee Pierce (SecurityMetrics) break down why scoping is your best friend, why screenshots aren't enough, and why you should never try to "button things down" before talking to an expert.Key Discussion Points:What is HITRUST? Unlike HIPAA, which lacks a formal certification, HITRUST integrates multiple standards (NIST, ISO, etc.) into a "beefy" framework. It provides a definitive answer to security and compliance inquiries in the healthcare space. The Three Levels of HITRUST:E1: The entry-level, static 44-control assessment.I1: The "leading practices" assessment with roughly 180+ controls.R2: The risk-based, "gold standard" that requires heavy factoring and scoping. The "House Alarm" Analogy: You can't protect a house if you don't know how many windows and doors it has. Asset management is the foundation of security; if you don't know what hardware and software you have, you can't secure the perimeter.Common Pitfalls in Certification:Overscoping: Fear often leads companies to include too much in their audit, driving up costs and timelines unnecessarily.Weak Evidence: Assessors need a "story," not just a screenshot. Evidence must be consistent, repeatable, and include clear date/time stamps. The "Never Happened" Trap: Even if you haven't fired anyone or had a breach in years, you must have a documented, tested process for how you would handle those events. The Importance of Readiness: The "separation of duties" means your auditor can't also be your consultant. Engaging a readiness team early helps you build the foundation correctly the first time, rather than tearing down finished work to meet compliance standards later.Expert Tips for Success"Don't build it and then do readiness afterwards." — Lee Pierce Start the conversation while you are still building your solutions or migrating to the cloud to ensure encryption and segmentation meet the standard from day one."Don't rush... it's not a check-the-box exercise." — Peter Briel  Focus on building a solid foundation. HITRUST isn't just about the certificate; it's about actually protecting the environment.Resources MentionedSecurity Metrics Website: Visit for a quick HITRUST cost assessment and to connect with the readiness and audit teams. https://www.securitymetrics.com/hitrustFactoring Tools: Resources to help determine whether you need an E1, I1, or R2 assessment.A note from Jen: We built Practical Cybersecurity because we were tired of the fear-mongering in this industry. Security shouldn't be a secret club.If you're trying to figure out PCI compliance or need a pen test, my team at SecurityMetrics can help you out: https://www.securitymetrics.com/contact/lets-get-you-to-the-right-place But if you just want to learn how to protect yourself for free, start here:  https://academy.securitymetrics.com/

Ever notice how your best memories start to fade into the background until they feel ordinary? We flip that script with a guided mindfulness practice built around mental subtraction—the science-backed move of imagining your treasured moment never happened—so its value returns with force. Across just a few minutes, we help you settle the body, pick one meaningful event, and trace the unlikely chain of choices, timing, and support that brought it to life.We then walk through the near-misses: the unread email, the missed bus that didn't happen, the small yes you almost didn't say. That gentle counterfactual isn't about regret; it's about clarity. By seeing how easily the moment could have vanished, appreciation deepens. You'll explore the benefits that flowed from that turning point—friendships formed, skills unlocked, confidence grown—and give your nervous system space to actually feel gratitude rather than recite it. The approach blends simple somatic cues (relax the jaw, drop the shoulders, steady the belly breath) with cognitive reframing to shift attention from entitlement to awe. This session is ideal if you want a fast, effective reset that lasts longer than a quick affirmation. It's grounded in positive psychology and mindfulness research, sometimes called the George Bailey effect, and it's designed to be repeated with different memories throughout the week. By the end, you'll not only recall what happened—you'll sense how precious it is that it happened at all, and carry that recognition into your next conversation, choice, and breath. If this practice helps, subscribe, share it with a friend who could use a lift, and leave a quick review to help others find the show. What meaningful moment will you subtract—and then celebrate—today?Become a Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher: Certify.MindfulnessExercises.com Email: Sean@MindfulnessExercises.com Mindfulness Exercises with Sean Fargo is a practical, grounded mindfulness podcast for people who want meditation to actually help in real life. Her name was Elizabeth Smart. This case has endured for more than two decades, not only because of what happened to Elizabeth, but because of how it happened. It forces us to confront uncomfortable questions about trust, faith, and what happens when deeply held beliefs collide with someone willing to exploit them.Elizabeth wasn't held for hours or days. She was a prisoner for nine months, subjected to repeated trauma and torture that would have broken most adults. But Elizabeth's story is not just about what happened to her. It's also about survival and strength. It's about a young girl who would later turn the unimaginable into advocacy and support for victims of kidnapping and sexual violence. Try our coffee! - www.CriminalCoffeeCo.comBecome a Patreon member -- > https://www.patreon.com/CrimeWeeklyShop for your Crime Weekly gear here --> https://crimeweeklypodcast.com/shopYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CrimeWeeklyPodcastWebsite: CrimeWeeklyPodcast.comInstagram: @CrimeWeeklyPodTwitter: @CrimeWeeklyPodFacebook: @CrimeWeeklyPodADS:1. https://www.LiquidIV.com - Use code CRIMEWEEKLY for 20% off your first order!2. https://www.WildGrain.com/CrimeWeekly30 - Use code CRIMEWEEKLY30 for $30 off your first box and FREE croissants for LIFE!3. https://www.HelixSleep.com/CrimeWeekly - Get 27% off sitewide! In 2016, French modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel was reportedly close to cooperating with U.S. prosecutors against Jeffrey Epstein, offering to testify about how he recruited girls for Epstein's sex-trafficking operations and possessed incriminating material in exchange for immunity. Federal records show Brunel had discussions with lawyers for Epstein's victims and was planning a meeting with the U.S. Attorney's Office—suggesting he was prepared to provide evidence that could have significantly strengthened the case against Epstein years earlier. But once Epstein learned of these negotiations, Brunel suddenly went silent and ultimately never offered testimony, and prosecutors didn't take immediate action at the time.Brunel, who ran the modeling agency MC2 with Epstein's financial backing and has long been accused of facilitating abuse by recruiting vulnerable women and girls under the pretense of modeling work, was not pursued by prosecutors in 2016 and Epstein remained free until his 2019 arrest. U.S. files show that this missed cooperation set back efforts to hold Epstein accountable and allowed his exploitation to continue. Brunel was later arrested in France in 2020 on sex-crime allegations and died in custody in 2022, but the earlier opportunity to challenge Epstein's operations appears to have been lost when Brunel backed out of his planned cooperation.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:The accomplice who was going to testify against Jeffrey Epstein—then went dark
