Fathering Nations Part 5 by Bill McMurdo
As fathers, we spend years teaching, guiding, protecting, and preparing our children for life. But what happens when it's time to let go? In this episode of the Faithful Fathering Podcast, Rick Wertz sits down with Ian Moore of Living Word Church to discuss what it means to "pass the baton" to the next generation. From raising young children to mentoring adult sons and daughters, Ian shares powerful insights on the different seasons of fatherhood and the challenge of remaining available without becoming overbearing. Ian also shares his unforgettable "Kroger parking lot testimony", a moment when God reminded him that every child must ultimately have their own relationship with Christ. As fathers, we plant seeds, water faithfully, and trust God for the increase. Whether you're parenting toddlers, teenagers, or grown children, this conversation will encourage you to stay engaged, trust God's timing, and pass the baton well. - What it means to pass the baton to the next generation - The seasons of fatherhood: teacher, coach, and counselor - Learning to let go while staying available - Trusting God with your children's spiritual journey - Encouragement for dads during Father's Day Month Faithful Fathering exists to encourage and equip dads, in partnership with the Church, to be faithful fathers.

Do fathers in Singapore get a bad reputation for being hands-off? Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah, who chairs the new Marriage and Parenthood Reset Workgroup, drew some flak for speaking about career “detours” as something that should be normalised for mothers - with little mention of a fathers’ role in the parenting journey. Why do we frame the parenting experience as mainly a woman’s role? In this episode of the podcast, I put that question to two fathers: new stay-at-home dad Jeggan Rajendram and Kevin Goh, the Group Head of engagement and programmes at the Centre for Fathering. We discuss who dads benchmark themselves to and whether mothers are preventing fathers from being more hands on. Highlights (click/tap above): 2:05 Are fathers missing from the parenting conversation? 3:30 “Regret minimisation”: Jeggan’s decision to be a stay-at-home dad 7:10 “People still look at me like I was crazy.” 11:27 Mums get a ‘head start’ on parenting 15:08 What’s holding fathers back from being more hands-on? 17:20 Mums, please involve dads, and let go 21:20 Whose standard is the right one? 24:05 The loss of identity as a stay-at-home parent 30:30 Being the stay-at-home parent doesn’t have to be forever 33:27 Encouraging dads to be more active parents 37:11 When dad’s your personal hairstylist 40:08 Will we have more babies if dads and mums are equals? Show Notes:First Assembly ChurchTehillah WorshipThe Pastorate's City MeetupsEpisode Notes:In today's episode, Ben Johnson joins Jason for a conversation on pastoral stewardship, generational legacy, and what it looks like to lead a nearly century-old church into its next chapter. Ben is the Lead Pastor of First Assembly Calgary, a Pentecostal church planted 97 years ago that has helped birth many other Pentecostal congregations across both Calgary and western Canada. Together they trace the story of First Assembly, the 35-year-old Tehillah Mondays gathering, and the heart that First Assembly has for worship, prayer, and the next generation. Jason and Ben also explore the joy and weight of fathering young leaders, the family legacy that traces Ben's grandfather's salvation back to First Assembly's downtown building decades ago, and the formative season of revival at Christian Life Assembly in 1998. The conversation closes with Ben sharing First Assembly's Vision 100, a stewardship-shaped initiative to double the impact of First Assembly in the next 100 years.Ben and Jason explore:The history and identity of First Assembly Calgary as a "mothering” and “fathering" church that has planted or helped plant many other Pentecostal churches in the city,The 35-year story of Tehillah Mondays and how a single worship gathering has continued to serve generation after generation in Calgary,What Ben learned by sitting with the saints of the church to discern God's specific purpose for a local congregation, and the role an eldership's fasting and prayer played in his transition,Why First Assembly is next-generation focused, and how that shapes worship, budgets, staffing, and Sunday gatherings without losing the honor due to senior saints,The cradle-to-college discipleship pathway, the Tehillah Schools for teenagers and adults, and how this has become the "farm team" for nearly all of First Assembly's staff,What young staff and leaders actually need from a lead pastor,First Assembly's Vision 100 and stewarding the church toward its 100-year anniversary with a strategy to reach, revitalize, and reproduce in Calgary.PartnersContact John Wright at Generis for help cultivating a culture of generosity in your church. We couldn't do the work we do at The Pastorate without your generous support. What does it mean to be fathered?
Fathering Nations (Part 4) by Bill McMurdo
In this episode of the Exploring More podcast, Michael Thompson and SJ Jennings continue the conversation around the Good Man Series, stepping into one of the most foundational—and often misunderstood—questions: Are men truly good? Challenging the deeply rooted belief that we are primarily broken or bad, Michael and SJ explore the biblical truth that we are created in the image of God—and that goodness is not something we earn, but something we recover. Drawing from passages like Romans 12 and Matthew 12, they unpack the reality that good is not only powerful, but meant to overcome evil. Through stories, Scripture, and real-life examples—including coaching and fatherhood—they contrast two approaches to growth: condemnation versus affirmation. One produces shame and performance. The other calls out identity and invites transformation. This episode presses into the idea that what a man believes about himself will shape how he lives, loves, and leads. When men begin to see themselves rightly—as beloved sons with goodness at their core—it changes everything. This is more than a theological conversation. It's an invitation to reject false narratives, confront the lies you've believed, and step into the kind of man God says you are.

Fathering Nations Part 3 by Bill McMurdo
Behind every healed heart is a story of radical forgiveness and God's redeeming love. This week on the Known Legacy Podcast, the guys sit down with John Smithbaker, founder of Fathers in the Field Ministry—a powerful outreach that pairs godly men with fatherless boys to introduce them to their Heavenly Father and guide them toward healing. John vulnerably shares his own transformative journey: growing up abandoned by his earthly father, wrestling with deep wounds, coming to Christ, and ultimately choosing forgiveness—which set him free and sparked the vision for Fathers in the Field. He now equips men to walk through the same process of forgiveness, releasing bitterness and stepping into the fullness God intends. If you've been hurt by an absent or broken father figure, struggle with unforgiveness, or want to help others find freedom, this raw and redemptive conversation is for you. It's a reminder that no wound is beyond God's healing grace. Listen or watch the full episode this Thursday—wherever you subscribe, or on YouTube! In this week's episode of the Exploring More podcast, Michael Thompson and SJ Jennings continue their deep dive into fatherhood with Part 2 of the Father Matters series. Centered around three foundational truths—that you can't father well unless you've been fathered, that fatherhood is relational not transactional, and that fatherhood never ends—the conversation challenges men to reflect on their own stories and press into presence over performance. Through personal stories and practical insights, Michael and SJ explore how being present, engaged, and intentional creates space for deeper connection and healing in relationships with children. They name the common distractions—busyness, financial stress, past wounds—and point to the quiet heroism of simply showing up. The power of meaningful questions, the role of forgiveness, and the impact of being emotionally available are all part of the journey. Whether you're a new dad, a seasoned father, or healing from your own father story, this episode is a heartfelt reminder that God is still fathering you—and He wants to empower you to father well. Training Up a Child: Discovering Gifts, Asking Questions, and Fathering with Intentionality In this episode of the Exploring More Podcast, Michael Thompson, SJ Jennings, and Josh Overton invite listeners into a candid and heartfelt conversation about the ongoing journey of fatherhood. Drawing from Proverbs 22:6 and their own lived experiences, they explore the sacred responsibility of training up children—not in a rigid mold, but in alignment with each child's unique personality, giftings, and “bent.” Fatherhood, they reflect, is not about mastery—it's about discovery. Whether it's planning one-on-one adventures, reading books their kids love, or simply asking the right questions at the right time, Michael, SJ, and Josh share how intentional moments of connection become anchors for a child's identity. The episode emphasizes the value of listening deeply, affirming consistently, and staying curious—especially as children grow into their own. The conversation also highlights how a father's story—his wounds, growth, and transformation—inevitably shapes the map he offers his children. From stories of moving day emotions to navigating different personality types, the episode offers both encouragement and practical wisdom for dads walking through every stage of parenting. Ultimately, Michael, SJ, and Josh point to the deeper reality that to father well, a man must be fathered by God. Healing the false self, becoming more self-aware, and leaning into community are all part of the ongoing work of fatherhood. This episode is a reminder that while parenting is hard, no man is meant to do it alone. We hope you enjoy this episode and invite you to connect with us!
