A show about the monster among us, around us, and in us.
Written by Henry Colburn in 1839, this short story is a near perfect rendition of folk belief in Werewolves put to pen.
All Hallows Eve, the night the dead wander the earth. Traditionally it was believed the spirits of dead relatives returned. Some to do penitence, some to say goodbye to loved ones, and some... Some returned for vengeance. What is the Nature of perception? How does it relate to reality? And are science and magic the similar than we understand?
The year was 1971, Puharich had been studying Extrasensory perception now for around twenty years, and when he heard of Uri Geller, he took the first flight he could to see for himself, the man who could predict the future and move matter with his mind. When he went to that night club in Tel Aviv he was not sure what to expect, but his hopes were high. And Uri did not disappoint. Coming on stage, he announced his first demonstration would be what he called “eyeless sight”. In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found. So opens Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez’s masterpiece sleeper hit, The Blair Witch Project. Little do people know, that The Blair Witch Project was actually inspired by a real legend, of a real backwoods area, which is said to be cursed for hundreds of years. Carmilla is an fictional Gothic novella by Irish author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and one of the early works of vampire fiction, predating Bram Stoker's Dracula by 26 years. The small market town of Bungay in the UK is today a quite respite from the common bustle of the outside world. And as with any old town, it has its ghosts, whispered about in passing stories. Signs in the towns center put it on display and wind vines display its form. That of a large black dog, with crazed eyes, mangy hair, and a long black tail. It is known locally, as Black Shuck, and one Sunday in August of 1577, it came to call on the church goers of Bungay. Demonic possession often takes a lethal overtone in many cases, the more playful sort of possession has been known among fairy spirits and those of the elemental or deamon type of creatures talked about before in previous podcasts. These possessions are often much more obscure, like the fay themselves, they seem more interested in trickery, confusion, and misguiding.140 years ago however, in the little town of Watseka, something happened that would cause it to be remembered forever after, as the Watseka Wonder. Everyone has bad dreams, there’s no denying. And others have dreams that feel like they are real, and upon waking have difficulty distinguishing between dream and wakefulness. Vivid as they are, their effect eventual fades with the forceful gravity of reality. But what do you call a dream that incorporates reality? What do you do when autonomous elements within the dream seek to harm you? What do you do when the Nightmare is real? “No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under the conditions of absolute reality; even Larks and Katydids are supposed by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone. “ So opens Shirley Jacksons monumental work The Haunting of Hill House, a phantasmic look into the horrors that lurk both within the stone and wood of ancient habitation, as well as those that lurk within our own mind. In it, the house becomes a metaphor for the main protagonist’s life. Trapped by circumstance, the house represents to Eleanor both an escape from her tragic life, as well as a trap from which she is unwilling to be released. We are left wondering by books end, is what she see’s there all a part of her imagination? Or does something truly terrible haunt the corridors of Hill House. In perhaps the only good ending for a horror story, the reader is left to decide. Ghost Ghosts haunted house Devilrypodcast Devilrypod Devilrypodcast.com
Were in the past we have dealt with manifestations of creatures in the liminal spaces of reality, here we disembark from the human world with all its mystery and wonder and look up to heaven, or down into the depths of Hell. And there is no better guide for us on this journey than the Warrens. With the recent passing of Lorraine, it is perhaps most fitting that we should explore the subject of Demonology, as seen by the 20th century’s most famous demonologists. They often found themselves listening to the most startling of tales, while consoling and advising the people they had just met on how they might be able to rid themselves of their unwanted apparitions. From this, the Warrens build a reputation unrivaled in the Paranormal world even today. Before there were “Ghost Hunters” Before there were bigfoot hunters, or UFOlogists. Before the cascade of unwarranted media friendly hacks, each one proclaiming a haunting under every nock and cranny. There was the Warrens, with only their faith and a few antiquated books to guide them. In this milieu, they carved out a niche for themselves as Demonologists. That is, experts in Evil Spirits bent on the harm and destruction of mankind. Being known as the only acknowledged Demonologist who were not ordained Clergy. They took it upon themselves to preach the existence of the spiritual realm to an audience steeped in scientific rationalism, eastern mysticism, and the hippy movement. They sold out lecture circuits across the US telling strange stories we still hear about today. Movies like the Conjuring series, a haunting in Connecticut, the Annabelle series, and The Haunted were all based on their experiences. Whispers are heard of such creatures that exist as some kind of manifestation of our psyche. Practices today still produce the strange results of our fore fathers manifesting incorporeal beast which are encountered today, if only we would look in the right places. Research on hallucinogenic substances such as DMT and Psilocybin Mushrooms have recorded multiple people who insist they have encountered intelligence's which were wholly outside themselves. Extreme seclusion practiced by some Orthodox Christian hermits and Buddhist monks have given accounts of seeing visions while far away from their fellow man. Notable amongst the bible believers is the account of Christs forty day fast, culminating in his vision of Satan, who tempts him with the desires of the world. Practitioners of sensory deprivation are familiar with the strange thoughts and visions which arise with dampening of the senses. Voices, thoughts, dreams, all flood together with the lose of the body in the warm waters of the pitch-black tank, leaving some to wonder if such beings are always there, always around us, but noise, distraction, and commotion of modernity has deprived us of another level of perception. In the age of information could it be that we have traded for the challenge of the Delphic Oracle to “Know thy self” for social media platforms and the material information handed to us by the likes of google on glowing technological screens. And if we did take up that challenge, if we did look inward for these mysterious creatures, what wonders, or horrors might we find hiding within ourselves? #Spirits #Elementals #Devilrypod Devilrypodcast.com
Balquhidder has always been seen as a “Thin Place” as the Celts say, were the boundary between Heaven and Earth is naturally not as robust as the rest of the world. All of this Rev. Kirk likely knew when he wrote his second book, for which he would be better remembered Today. The Secret Commonwealth, which weaved together strange tales of a race of people who once dwelt beside mankind. A magical and noble people, who lived in the hills and trees of the wood, and under the mounds of the earth, who demanded respect, and offered good luck to those who gave it, and suffering to those who did not. They were the Fiery Folk. And in 1692, in the same year that Robert Kirk published his book, the little people carried him away to their land somewhere into the twilight of reality, never to be seen again. Fixed the media issues and republished. Like many of our subjects, obscured by media, Hollywood, and modern fantasy, fables of the dragon languish behind fictional depictions of physical manifestations of fire breathing winged serpents, most are content to regurgitate Tolkien like fairytales. The Dragon of folklore is a far richer and vibrant creature. For instance, two troupes normally follow the dragon where ever he is found around the world is that he is prone to be found around water rather than to breath fire and if slain, their body melts away leaving a putrid stench. The Chinese dragon which was often praised for ending droughts by chasing clouds into the much-needed areas and has also been known to fall dead from the sky at times, and the villagers in reverence would cover its body with straw mats. It would disappear shortly after. In the aforementioned tale of Tiamat, she was the embodiment of the salt-waters, the originator of all life. Our venerable for bearer Rev. Montague Summers eagerly devoured the subject of the European Werewolf in a single manuscript, and much of what we now recount and know of the subject is from his delicate mind. He studiously pointed out that the origin of the shapeshifter is nothing new, it existed from the dawn of creation, and as we will see, existed even to this day. He saw the creature as he saw the world, a direct dichotomy of good and evil, black and white. The Shapeshifter was one who denied his humanity, who used unsound and unholy devices to achieve his evil ends. He scorned God and his creation. He distained his fellow man and desired his ultimate destruction. He was a blasphemer, a heretic, a reviler. Many were his devise to change, the most common being a pelt of a wolf, made into a coat or belt to be fastened around him. Sometimes it was a special cream that was rubbed all over the body that allowed the transformation to take place. Often times it was the Devil himself who provided these malicious artifacts, a trade of sorts with the Lord of lies. For you soul you could “live deliciously” and have power the likes of which you could not imagine. Steve Cook of WTCM-FM in Traverse City recorded a song for April fool’s day in 1987 called The Legend. The song recounts a strange myth whispered by his friends and family. The joke was on him when he became inundated with stories from listeners who claimed to have seen a strange dog or wolf like creature which stood on its hind legs. The song took on new life however when Grand Rapids Press ran an article about an unknown animal near Luther which ripped apart screens and mangled door frames trying to enter the small cabin in the middle of the woods. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources investigation ruled out a bear and said it was some kind of unknown Canine. Those versed in the Occult might see a link to Sabine Barin-Gould’s recounting of the Baltic legends of werewolves that would try force their way into homes at night. If they succeeded, they would kill everyone inside. The dark arts used by sorcerers through the ages was often an amalgamation of ancient wisdom mixed with the dominate religion of the time. Abramelin said in his own book that his magic could be practiced by anyone who believed in God, be he Christian, Muslim, or Jew. A city on the bayou stands today, as it did one hundred and fifty years ago, as a microcosm of race, religion, and politics of America. New Orleans stood at the beginning of the 19th Century as a place were strange things were told on every corner. African and European, slave with free, Catholicism with witchcraft, blended into the most eclectic communities the world has ever known. In this community, a mixing of religions also took place, spiritual folkways of the African diaspora blended and was practiced alongside traditional Christianity, Voodoo wasn’t born in New Orleans, but it certainly was defined and took root there. And among its practitioners, Queens were often looked up to as leaders of a sort. People would come to them for advice or help, weather it was a jealous lover or success of their business, to purchase gris-gris, or to attend a ritual. And among all the Queens, one name stands above the rest, Marie Laveau. A lovely Valentines Day treat for all you lovers out here, a story about eternal love, poison, horrible death, and of coarse, necromancy. Through the ages since Valentines ascension into Sainthood, tales have arisen to fill the hearts and minds of the simple folk throughout history. In Norfolk, a man named Jack was said to leave sweets at your back door for children. In Slavonia Saint Valentine is seen as the bringer of springs and is also said to give good health and watches over Pilgrims to Holy sites. The connection of love, the joy of giving, the desire of pleasing your partner often brings out the best in many of us but has brought out ostentations display’s of love. I’m sure my listeners could tell a few stories about the cycle of appeasement we go through each year for those we care about. But let me ask you this, have you ever loved someone so much, you brought them back from the dead? If you ever find yourself vacationing on the majestic Islands of the Cyclades archipelago, perhaps overlooking the beautiful beaches of Santorini, or maybe on the ancient cobblestone steps of Mykonos and you hear an unexpected knock at your door after dark, it might be wise, as the locals would tell you, to wait for a second knock, least you become a victim of the isles ancient and most wicked inhabitant, the vrykolakas. Seeming to be the most impatient of monsters, if the first call is not answered, it will move on to your neighbors. If it happens that you do answer its beckoning cry, you will find the doorway devoid of any presence. You have however, opened the door to your own doom, and will suffer some strange fate not long after. In October of 2018 The Washington Post ran an article titled “Archaeologists find ‘vampire burial’ site of a child feared capable of rising from the dead” the Articled went on to detail a strange burial ritual they have come to be familiar with in the field. More than fifteen hundred years ago, in a vast Roman villa a young child was buried with a stone the size of an egg in their mouth. Researchers speculate the child likely died from a Malaria outbreak at the time. The reason, it turned out, was a custom among Europeans at the time, to stop the child from rising from the dead to spread the disease to others. Another child, a three-year-old girl was found not far from there with stones weighing down all limbs. Locals dubbed the find “the Vampire of Lugnano” and a quote from an archeologist working the site stated, “beyond these bizarre discoveries were human beings who lived in fear” The question is, fear from what? Many, familiar only with the sparkling erotica of the Hollywood Vampire craze might be perplexed to hear of a Vampire being dispatched with stones. In fact, the Vampire of folklore could be destroyed many ways. A popular method was to drive an iron stake through the suspects head. Our ancestors viewed things with a spiritual or otherworldly sense, much like the vampires themselves. Some materials possessed properties that were purer than others, metal being at the top of the list, in fact the more pure or rare the metal, the better it seemed to work against the undead. This is where the idea of a silver bullet should be used to kill a Werewolf comes from. In last weeks episode Tell me Strange Things, we looked at the curious life and works of Montague Summers and explored his odd views on the literal existence of Vampires, Werewolves and Witches. His exploration and translations of works of Inquisitors and Witchfinder generals did not endear him to the prevailing sentiment at the time and now-being that the trial, torture, and execution of witches was a sad and disturbing byproduct of overzealous and misguided Religious charlatans. Although many of the examples produced in the hysteria of the day, like that of the reviled Matthew Hopkins and the Salem Witch trials read like psychopathic horror novels, what is often overlooked is the real cases of witchcraft and devil worship practiced by the supposed enlightened nobles and aristocrats of the Middle ages and Renaissance era. In 1926 a strange looking man, with a black cape, black shovel hat, wearing a black cassock with a white collar came bounding out of the reading room of the British Museum of Oxford, cape fluttering behind him. In one hand was a silver doped cane, in another, a black portfolio with the words "VAMPIRE" written in blood red across it. "Monty" a man called after him. The man in black turned, a mischievous grin came across his face. "Yes sir?
