This week, Josh and Drusilla are excited to be joined by film critic and documentarian, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas. Alexandra has written the book on film footage (literally) and thus brings the show the big mama jama of the sub genre: The Blair Witch Project. From wiki: “The Blair Witch Project is a 1999 American found footage psychological folk horror film written, directed, and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez. One of the most successful independent films of all time, it is a "found footage" pseudo-documentary in which three young students (Heather Donahue, Michael C. This week, we turn once more to the wonderful world of media as we consider ten films for Changeling: the Lost inspiration. We did this previously with Changeling: the Dreaming (check out episode 50!), so it seemed like the right time to pull a similar for the other fae game. There are a couple crossover titles whose themes and plots and aesthetics work equally well in both, in our opinion... but otherwise, this list has a slightly eerier, horror-inflected vibe overall, we suppose? We've tried to keep the discussion as spoiler-light as possible, but for your edification, here are the deets and some trailers for the films we discuss in this order: Alice (Něco z Alenky) (dir. A map lost, a legend found, and a final image that still sets nerves on edge. We crack open The Blair Witch Project with a mix of reverence and skepticism, exploring why a film with no score, almost no gore, and a monster you never see became a horror milestone. Julie joins Chad, Mike, and Sam to share first-watch memories, theater lore about audiences who thought it was real, and the marketing sleight of hand that turned rumor into rocket fuel long before social media. We dig into the nuts and bolts of the scares: the weaponized ambiguity, the way darkness and sound design conspire to make the trees feel alive, and how the infamous basement corner communicates more terror in a second than most films manage in an act. Our panel also challenges the film's weak spots—the breathless narration, the endless shouting, and a third-act sprint that trades tension for noise. We ask whether found footage is inherently a one-and-done experience, compare Blair Witch with Paranormal Activity, The Ritual, and other entries in the subgenre, and debate how modern tech would change the stakes unless you grant the witch a signal-jamming mood.Behind the scenes, we surface production choices that shaped its realism: guided improvisation via daily notes, deliberate sleep and food deprivation to fray nerves, and town interviews that blur documentary and performance. Those decisions gave the movie its raw texture—real annoyance, real disorientation, and a geography that feels discovered rather than staged. Love it or roll your eyes at the map-in-the-creek moment, Blair Witch remains essential horror literacy, a reminder that what you don't see can haunt the hardest. If this breakdown hits your horror sweet spot, follow the show, share the episode with a friend who swears the corner shot still gets them, and leave a quick review so other genre fans can find us. For their Audience Interrogation cycle "Close Up" episode, Emilio, Julian and Madeline hit record and explore a genre that they are, admittedly, not as familiar with: Found Footage Films. They are joined by writer/director/teacher/musician Shaun Seneviratne, a fellow cinephile whose been historically lukewarm on Found Footage films, but enthusiastic to dive in and open minded to the ways this filmmaking style can tell unique, cinematic stories. The group selects three representative films from different eras. First, they unpack 1999's 'The Blair Witch Project', considered the codifier of the genre, and note how the film balances a growing sense of unease with naturalistic, improvised acting and dialogue. Then they discuss Patrick Brice's 2014 film 'Creep', its unavoidable connection to mumblecore, and the ways it intentionally plays with long-standing horror tropes. They complete the conversation digging into 'Searching', Aneesh Chaganty's 2018 screen life thriller that concerns itself with the finding of footage, and manages to capture emotion and intention through computer use in surprisingly effective ways. Shaun Seneviratne can be found and followed on the socials at thebrownshaunHis feature film 'Ben and Suzanne: A Reunion in 4 Parts' is streaming now on Fandor and available for rent on digital. Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, the directors of the iconic horror film The Blair Witch Project join this episode of the Movies In Focus podcast. Released in 1999, the film not only essentially created the found-footage genre but it also left an indelible mark on the landscape of independent cinema. Daniel and Eduardo share their insights on the film's production - everything from its unique marketing strategy to the challenges they faced in bringing their vision to life. This is a fascinating conversation with two filmmakers who pushed the boundaries of cinema and redefined horror storytelling. It's an engaging discussion that will illuminate the legacy of a film that continues to inspire filmmakers and frighten audiences around the world 25 years on. that continues to inspire filmmakers and frighten audiences around the world
Even though The Blair Witch Project didn't invent the genre, it's probably the best-known and the biggest hit of all the found footage movies. The online marketing campaign was especially revolutionary. It's a shame that Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez never hit these heights again as writers or directors, but they got so much mileage out of their made-up story, considering it was mostly improvised by the then-unknown Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams. The unresolved mystery takes a lot of heat for its ambiguity, yet Ryan's one-man show talks about how haunting the whole thing still feels 25 years later. This 621st edition of Have You Ever Seen also talks a lot about who or what might have caused these 3 to disappear. So face the wall on this penultimate day of both October and of Scary Movie Month as this episode tries to figure out the horrific deal in The Blair Witch Project. Additional note: both the fake documentary "The Curse Of The Blair Witch" and the 2016 "Blair Witch" have been rewatched since recording this podcast. The "doc" is indeed very effective and even quite eerie. And while the 2016 sequel has its moments, Adam Wingard is WAY too reliant on jump scares and loud shock moments to bother building the dread the original Blair Witch did. At Wheaton High School Ed made school movie projects such as Shrimp Fried Vice and Pride (in the name of Love) all of which starred his friends and family, as well as Ed himself. After High School Ed studied at Montgomery College where he continued to make movies like Star Trek Demented. He later got accepted to the University of Central Florida where he made Gabriel's Dream, a film which he thought was going to be his big break, but that didn't come for almost another decade. In April of 2024, two podcasters went on Zoom to talk to the writer and director of the Blair Witch Project...a couple weeks later the interview went up (and sadly the podcasters did not disappear). Daniel Myrick joins us to speak of making the monumental horror film. We get details of filming in the woods and how they gave direction, when they knew it was a hit and the worldwide tour, and his current media production company Gang of Robots. Check out his new documentary Triple 7 releasing May 7th and listen to our interview in the corner of your basement. We also talk about a really unique church, discuss guests who disappear, and more. Have a listen!

If you went down to the woods in July 1999, you were in for a big surprise. The Blair Witch Project – our movie this week, one of the most notorious horror films in modern movie history – was a phenomenon that no one saw coming. Its reverberations are still being felt today, not just in horror but in movie-making at large. Is tale of a group of indie filmmakers out in the wilderness, making a documentary about a mythical witch, is credited with birthing the found footage genre – a huge staple of blockbuster filmmaking for decades to come. But maybe more importantly, the film announced to emerging storytellers that, in a new era of digital video and the internet, anyone could be a filmmaker, able to make and market a film to audiences. All you needed was imagination. The Blair Witch Project was written and directed by Daniel Myrick and our guest today, Eduardo Sánchez – two friends fresh out of film school. In the conversation you're about to hear, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the movie, Ed looks back at the film's conception. We get into what psychological tricks found footage as a format plays on the audience's brain to heighten their sense of terror. And you'll discover how deep mythology of the Blair Witch goes – a mythology that, as you'll hear towards the end of our chat, isn't finished scaring audiences yet.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Happy Halloween! To celebrate this spooky holiday, Vanessa and Jonah decided to sit down and watch the nostalgic 1999 horror film, "The Blair Witch Project" and see how it aged over the past 20+ years. Along the way we discuss the groundbreaking nature of the film's viral marketing, why the directors chose to include so much banal footage in a fake "documentary" and what's up with the pacing of this thing? Vanessa also does some excellent impressions of the characters while Jonah gets called out for the way he pronounces the word "legacy." We also dig into what the cast of the film are up to these days and collectively wonder how this movie made $250 million dollars. Finally, we play a Holiday edition of our segment CHANGE DOT DORK where we discuss petitions about replacing candy corn with actual corn, making Halloween a national holiday and getting rid of yellow Starburst. Be safe out there everyone! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's guest Eduardo Sanchez goes back to the late 90's and shares his experience on what it was like to be in the center of The Blair Witch Project hurricane. What it was like being on the cover of Time Magazine and how did it feel to be the toast of Hollywood…for a period of time.We also discuss the aftermath, how his career grew post Blair Witch and crazy stories of Hollyweird.Who hasn't heard of the now legendary indie film rags to riches tale of The Blair Witch Project? Every film student from Los Angeles to Mumbai heard the story of how two young film students spent $27,000 (mostly from friends, family and credit cards) to make a little indie horror film that ended up grossing $250 million worldwide.Directors Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick shot The Blair Witch Project in a new way which would later be called “found footage.” Without The Blair Witch Project, there is no Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield, The Last Exorcism. The marketing of The Blair Witch Project was equally as important as the film itself. Below you can watch the FAKE documentary that helped fuel the belief that the Blair Witch Curse was real and that the kids in the movie were dead.Just BRILLIANT marketing!Enjoy my conversation with Eduardo Sanchez.

Without The Blair Witch Project, there is no [easyazon_link identifier="B00304LF0W" locale="US" tag="whatisbroke-20"]Paranormal Activity[/easyazon_link], No [easyazon_link identifier="B00AEFXNGE" locale="US" tag="whatisbroke-20"]Cloverfield[/easyazon_link], No [easyazon_link identifier="B003L20IEW" locale="US" tag="whatisbroke-20"]The Last Exorcism[/easyazon_link].Today's guest Eduardo Sanchez goes back to the late 90's and shares his experience on what it was like to be in the center of The Blair Witch Project hurricane. What it was like being on the cover of Time Magazine and how did it feel to be the toast of Hollywood...for a period of time.We also discuss the aftermath, how his career grew post Blair Witch and crazy stories of Hollyweird.Enjoy my conversation with Eduardo Sanchez.
Halloween in June continues on Late to the Movies with 1999's The Blair Witch Project! Our month-long celebration of low budget horror carries on as Ben, Greg, Ray, and Robbie get lost in the woods with the often imitated, never equaled granddaddy of found footage horror films. Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez and starring Rei Hance, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard.
In our 399th episode, Alanna Bale of Cardinal, Killjoys and Blaine Thurier's Kicking Blood -- which arrives on digital next week -- braves the bleak, woodsy horrors of Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez' game-changing 1999 found-footage classic The Blair Witch Project. Your genial host Norm Wilner is standing in the corner, don't mind him ... although he would feel a lot less lonely if you subscribed to his Shiny Things newsletter. He's just saying.

This week, we present the most recent episode of John's other show, 1999: The Podcast, which features a conversation with American Hysteria's Chelsey Weber-Smith about The Blair Witch Project. Starring Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard as themselves – or people who happen to have their exact names – and written and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, 1999's 10th-highest grossing film, The Blair Witch Project was produced on a budget of less than a half million dollars and grossed $248.6 million at the box office. One of the founding films in the "found footage" genre, the film was perhaps most famous for the unprecedented marketing campaign that led up to its release. The movie made innovative use of a relatively novel outlet called "the World Wide Web" and deliberately blurred the lines between fact and fiction, giving the film an air of reality that actually fooled some its audience into believing they were watching real documentary footage. Heralded by critics for its ingenuity as well as its genuine scares, Blair Witch may well have been the buzziest of buzzy movies ever. But its legacy is slightly more complicated. While it was a huge hit with the public at the time, it is less liked by audiences now, who often complain that the movie doesn't hold up on its own, having relied too much on the multimedia "project" of which the film is merely the final ingredient. 1999: The Podcast on Twitter: @1999thePodcast Chelsey on Twitter: @AmerHysteria
