The legend of the phantom dog The Black Shuck is explored. Sun King finds himself in another dimension. Old fart shoots woman for denying him sex. [Ep 586]
On Sunday the 3rd of August I had the chance to attend the Black Shuck Festival in Bungay, a lovely town in East Suffolk. We briefly talked about the legendary Black Dog, Black Shuck, in Episode 5 of Season 6, but I wanted to dig deeper. I wanted to know more about its story, its impact on Bungay, and its cultural significance today. Plus, what goes into organizing such a fantastic event? Who's involved, and how do they pull it all together? To get the scoop, I was lucky enough to chat with Chris Reeve and James Mayhew. These individuals not only know the legend of Black Shuck inside out but also understand the intricacies of putting together this fantastic festival. We met at Bungay's Museum, and I had the pleasure of interviewing them both. Their insights were fascinating, and I'm excited to share these interviews with you as we gear up for Season 7 of the Haunted UK Podcast. Before we start, stay tuned for a special prize giveaway! Keep an eye on our Patreon, Kofi, and social media accounts for more details. We hope you enjoy this episode, and who knows, maybe we'll see you at the next Black Shuck Festival.Presented by Steven HollowayRecorded on Location at Bungay Museum, Bungay, East SuffolkProduced by Pink Flamingo Home StudiosDo you have an interesting story which you'd be willing to share with the show? As autumn descends, I wanted to face a classic symbol in British and European folklore - the black dogWe start in East Anglia, England, with perhaps the most famous of all shadow hounds: Black Shuck, who makes an appearance in St Mary's church of Bungay in 1577, storms to raise havoc. And a reading drawn from Ghosts and Witches by Wentworth + Ayrton, 1991, on the Galleytrot and Shuck. Before facing:The Barghest of Yorkshire, accompanied by rattling chains, may have inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula's transformation into an enormous black dog in Whitby.Yeth Hounds (Devon)Whisht Hounds (Devon/Dartmoor)Richard Cabell's Hounds (Dartmoor) widely considered a major inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. The Devil's Dandy Dogs (Cornwall): A terrifying hunt led by Satan himself. The Wish Hounds or Witch Hounds of SussexThe Church Grim, a guardian spirit that appears as a large black dogAnd The Moddey Dhoo of the Isle of Man: Meaning "black dog" in Manx, this giant shaggy-haired dog that haunted Peel Castle And we finish with readings of The Moddey Doo or the Black Dog of Peel Castle from Manx Fairy Tales by Sophia Morrison, 1911 and The Book of Were-Wolves by Sabine Baring-Gould, 1865. And accounts of witch wolves from Estonia. These are just a few of the countless legends of black dogs, wolves and hounds. Do drop me a message if you would like to share your own favourites! Happy SeptemberSarah X

In this week's episode, we'll be talking about a canine breed from Hell, known as Hellhounds. This is definitely not a dog you walk up to and pet. In fact, if you see one, you may just lose your life. They are believed to be dogs that serve demons and they hunt souls to take them to Hell. The old adage, "his bark is worse than his bite" does not hold true with this guy. Though his howl is bone chilling, he is known to shred his victim to pieces in order to collect his/her soul. Pray he does not have your scent. If you have any comments, questions or stories you would like to share, or if you'd like to be on the show, email us at cryptidfanatic@gmail.com.Send us a textSupport the show
On this week's episode of Local Legends, the very last episode of Series 6, Martin is joined around the campfire by award-winning storyteller, performer, author, poet, lyricist, and very nice man, Hugh Lupton!Hugh's career spans over 40 years, both in terms of his solo projects and his partnerships with other artists, writers, musicians, illustrators and performers. As we discussed on Monday's episode, there is a sense in which Hugh is the golden thread that binds together modern British storytelling and several folk traditions, with his glimmer and shine helping to guide the oral tradition into the 21st century. He has, of course, toured both nationally and internationally, and has performed at the RSC, the National Theatre, and the Barbican. His repertoire ranges from Greek epics to the Grimms Fairy Tales, from Norse and Celtic myth to East Anglian folk-tales, and from the Great War to John Clare.Plus, in addition to his award-winning songwriting work, he has also written several excellent books, including Norfolk Folk Tales. You can learn more about Hugh and his work on his website, https://hughlupton.co.uk/, and do check the Diary section - he gets about, so do try to go and see him!For now though, let's gather in close around the Three Ravens campfire, have a sip of whatever's in your nut brown bowl, and listen in, to a chat about the life and work of perhaps the most influential storyteller alive today, the county of Norfolk, and tales such as the Peddlar of Swaffham, Black Shuck, those of fenland folk hero Tom Hickathrift, and so much more, with a true Local Legend: Hugh Lupton!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. In today's episode of Three Ravens, it's series finale time, and Martin is guiding us through the history and folklore Norfolk! We begin by acknowledging quite what an extraordinary journey we have been on in just over two years, and then discuss Appleby Horse Fair which is happening right now - get along to it if you can! Then, we navigate to Norfolk and chat through all sorts of wonders to do with the county - from the prehistoric landscape of the Grimes Graves flint mines to the feverish revelations of the first female writer in English literature, Julian of Norwich, with a joyful stop-off at Cromer for some dressed crab, and much more besides. For this week's County Dish, the last one of the series, Martin plies us with cheese, seafood, and some weirder options, including Norfolk Milk Punch and Norfolk Dumplings (a.k.a. 'Fillers' and 'Swimmers') which sets us up nicely for the final leg of our jaunt! In terms of the county's folklore, we have ghosts - including one very dramatic one, and another that's absolutely terrifying, chat about Black Shuck (of course), the Fenland Secret Society of the Goose Feather, a Georgian 'Wild Boy' called Peter, plus plenty else, all enriched with some excerpts from Saturday's upcoming Local Legends interview with award-winning writer, storyteller, and all-round hero of the modern English folk tradition, Hugh Lupton. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's telling of "The Pedlar of Swaffham" - one of England's best-known folk tales, and perhaps Norfolk's most famous. Although this version of the story might not pan out quite as you'd expect...We really hope you enjoy the episode, and will be back on Thursday with a Seasonal Special bonus episode all about Midsummer and its associated traditions, all before the full interview with Hugh comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. The Broads National Park, often known as the Norfolk Broads, is one of the UK's 15 National Parks. Seven rivers and over sixty waterways called Broads comprise the park. In the medieval era, locals dug peat from the land for fuel. By the 14th century, these channels flooded and created the Broads. They'd become a popular boating destination by the 19th century. Here in the 21st century, the park is Britain's largest protected wetland. Unsurprisingly, the Park is also home to spectres, Otherworldly beings, and bogey beasts. Perhaps Norfolk's most famous resident is Black Shuck. Yet there are also ghostly monks, phantom drummers, and the malicious Lantern Men. Let's go and meet them in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! For this week's Bonus Episode we're padding through mists on silent paws and peering, with eyes of flame, at the history and folklore of Hellhounds! With so much to talk about, there's no mucking around: we dive straight into prehistory, discussing how humankind's domestication of the dog set the stage for conceptions of the Hellhound. From our earliest rock art through to the very first toys and statues, dogs were with us.But what about their dark double - the 'Demon Dog' or 'Hellhound?' From vengeful Ancient Mesopotamian afterlife creatures like the Shadu and Sharru to the role the Jackal (and Jackal-headed deity Anubis) played in Ancient Egyptian belief, via Classical notions about dogs and Hellhounds like Cerberus, it's startling how consistent beliefs about these 'Not Dog' monsters have remained. And descriptions of Demon Dogs across time have been wild and absurd. But, from Roman notions of the 'Duties of a Dog' through to Medieval and Renaissance attitudes to the fae and 'Other,' we, as a species, kept it nice and weird, trying to define the paranormal pooch as uncanny and terrifying, even though individual Hellhounds are often quite nice to people! From England's most famous example in the shape of Black Shuck to monsters with dog bodies and human heads, canine boggarts that grow to the height of houses to talking Hellhounds that just want to snuggle in your pocket, we're embracing it all. So, join with us beneath the light of the moon, and let our howls float on the breeze, singing of doom and portents. For in this episode, we look into the dark mirrors of our minds, and see what is reflected there. Not 'man's best friend' but something else with fur, four legs, a tail, and its own agenda that we simply cannot understand. Therefore, we howl. The Black Shuck is a large, shaggy black dog that is said to appear out of nowhere and its very bad luck for whoever sees it. These hellhounds have been seen all over the world, but are they really ghostly demon dogs? Or actually just misunderstood very good boys? My guest for this episode is author Liz Williams, who joined me to talk about her new book Rough Music: Folk Customs, Transgression and Alternative Britain. Liz holds a PhD in the History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge and is a widely published journalist and writer of both fiction and non-fiction. In Rough Music she examines the influence of themes such as transgression and shame in British folk customs, from ancient times to the present day. The book investigates a variety of ceremonial traditions in Britain such as May Day parades, Bonfire Night and other seasonal events and reveals the roots and roles of violence, mockery, protest and public shaming in some of these. In the interview I talk with Liz about her background and interest in this subject matter and the connections between some of the customs detailed in her book and otherworldly folkloric entities such as Woodwoses, the Green Man and Black Shuck. We also discuss the debate around the origins of some of these traditions and how this contrasts and compares with the timeless quality that they possess, which is something that they share with a lot of paranormal phenomena. You can find out more about Liz and her book Rough Music at https://reaktionbooks.co.uk/work/rough-music and further details on the 2025 Black Shuck festival are available at https://blackshuckfestival.com/. On this week's Bonus Episode, Eleanor explains the strange science of Ley Lines, from the very origins of related theories in the ancient world to the various places invisible earth energies hold in the modern consciousness. We start off talking about the very earliest versions of something we might recognise as a Ley Line appeared in writing, in the form of Ancient Chinese 'Dragon Veins,' before we unpack how natural philosophers in various fields of Western esotericism began developing theories of Ley Lines through into the 20th century, when the movement really took off. From 19th century hobbyists to 'New Age' UFO-centred theories of 'orthotenies' and magnetic earth signatures, more quantifiable ideas like infrasound and Sick Building Syndrome to dowsing and attempts by modern Druids to trace and activate new leys, it's a pretty ranging episode that throws up an awful lot of questions - as well as a surprising number of answers! Including conspiracy theories involving Nazi occultism, studies into the uncannily regular placement of department store chains, to the seeming patterns found in Black Shuck sightings, it's a conversation that joins a lot of dots.Whether those connections actually mean anything is something else entirely, of course...Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Mark Norman is an English folklore researcher, author, lecturer and host of The Folklore Podcast in Devon, England. We begin with comparative readings about spectral road dogs in Virginia and in England. Mark tells us a bit about his county, of ship scuttlers & Wistman's Wood. Looking for the oldest written account of ghostly black dogs in the United Kingdom, we hear of The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and a wild hunt of demonic hunters. From there we focus in on the lore: the Black Shuck event at Bungay & Blythburgh churches in 1577; black dog sightings as omens of death; and protective spirit dogs. We end on how landscape features become part of folklore, the future of folklore, and the winter tradition of Wassailing around the apple orchard. Check out Mark's folkloric books and his popular podcast, The Folklore Podcast. For sixteen years, his undead reign brought terror to the living and torment to his widow. But when the villagers finally rose against him, they unearthed a horror beyond imagination. (Jure Grando: The First Vampire) *** For nearly a millennium, a monstrous black dog with eyes like burning coals has stalked the foggy coastlines and ancient churches of East Anglia, leaving death and terror in its silent wake. From its first recorded appearance in 1127 where it led a spectral hunting party through Peterborough, to its most infamous attack in 1577 when it allegedly killed four churchgoers, the creature known as Black Shuck has become far more than just another ghost story. Through centuries of sightings and evolving folklore, this massive demon hound has transformed from a Viking guardian spirit into one of Britain's most enduring legends - one that some locals insist still prowls the shadows of Norfolk and Suffolk to this day. (Black Shuck: East Anglia's Demon Hound) *** In 1857 London, the Bacon family's home became the center of supernatural chaos when mysterious sounds and flying objects drew crowds of over a thousand spectators to their modest Bermondsey residence. But when thirteen-year-old Caroline confessed to creating the ghostly disturbances using strands of hair to topple objects, her deception was revealed as an act of rebellion against her father and new stepmother. This tale of a fake haunting offers a poignant glimpse into Victorian family dynamics and the desperate measures one girl took to assert her independence. (The Bermondsey Poltergeist) *** In October 1975, what began as a late-night drive for two young men in rural Maine turned into an encounter that would haunt them forever. David Stephens had no memory of being taken aboard a massive UFO by mushroom-headed beings until months later, when hypnosis sessions revealed the terrifying truth about the hours he lost that night – an experience so profound that it would drive his friend Glen to flee the state and change both their lives forever. (Night of the Mushroom Men) *** Could the Moon's perfect positioning—exactly 400 times smaller than the Sun and precisely placed for total eclipses—be more than cosmic coincidence? Authors Christopher Knight and Alan Butler propose a mind-bending theory: that future humans (or their advanced robots) traveled back in time 4.6 billion years to construct the Moon, creating the exact conditions needed for life on Earth to emerge. Their provocative hypothesis suggests we might be caught in an infinite loop, with humanity traveling to the past to ensure its own creation, much like the ancient symbol of Ouroboros—a snake eternally consuming its own tail. Episode 136:Having given you my own thoughts on ‘Titus Andronicus' last time I'm pleased to say that for this special guest episode I was able to take the discussion even further with Eleanor Conlon, a fellow podcaster and a theatre professional as you will hear Eleanor has a lot to say about the play and insights that, in some cases, go in different directions from what I was able to say about the play.Eleanor Conlon is an actor, director, and award-winning writer based in Sussex. After completing her BA in English Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London, Eleanor earned her MA in Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama at Kings College and Shakespeare's Globe. While at The Globe, Eleanor worked dramaturgically on productions by Dominic Dromgoole Matthew Dunster and Jeremy Herrin, and with Jenny Tiramani on the Original Practices Costume Archive. After achieving success with her theatre company The Barefoot Players in the late 2000s and early 2010s, with which she produced plays including Tis Pity She's a Whore, Doctor Faustus and The Alchemist, the latter two of which she also directed, as well as productions of several of Shakespeare's works, plays by Ibsen, Oscar Wilde, and others, she founded her current and much acclaimed theatre company Rust & Stardust.Writing over a dozen plays rooted in English folklore, Eleanor has worked with her puppet-maker partner Katie Sommers to tour Rust & Stardust's shows all over the UK, including their plays The Wild Man of Orford, Black Shuck, The Marsh Demons of Iken, and Doctor Dee's Daughter and the Philosopher's with celebrated recorder quartet Palisander. In addition to recent adaptations of Shakespeare's plays including The Tempest and Macbeth with Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells, in 2023 she launched the Three Ravens Podcast with her partner Martin Vaux – also a writer and actor – which explores history, legends, and diverse aspects of folk culture.Featuring original stories each week based on the lore of England's 39 historic counties, Three Ravens quickly rose into the Top 1% of podcasts globally. It currently sits in the Top 50 UK Fiction Podcasts, with 4.9/5 star ratings on iTunes, Apple Podcasts and Spotify and a passionate fanbase across social media. For Three Ravens contact:Website: https://www.threeravenspodcast.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/threeravenspodcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/threeravenspodcastX: @threeravenspodFor Rust + Stardust TheatreInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/eleanorstardust/Website: https://www.rustandstardust.co.ukSupport the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp Hosted on Acast. Here's the second in our quintet of bonus compilation episodes to help plug the gap between Seasons 4 and 5.We've entitled this episode Three Romances because it contains three of our tales that are neither comedic, nor tragic – rather, they are strange adventures, and some corkers at that – including our Westmoreland story, The Witch of the Westmoreland, our Nottinghamshire story, The Many Deaths of Robin Hood, and our Norfolk story, Black Shuck. We hope you enjoy! For the Three Ravens Season 3 finale, and to conclude their first lap around England's 39 historic counties, Eleanor and Martin venture to Norfolk. After a brief chat about St Adrian, and whether he's really St Adrian at all, they pad on silent paws deep into the heart of the history and folklore of Norfolk. They talk about sites like Grime's Graves, Norwich Cathedral, and Felbrigg Hall, and legends and heroes including Lord Dacre's ghost, John Chapman the Swaffham Pedlar, the Shrieking Pits of West Runton, and much more besides. Then it's time for the main event: Eleanor's telling of "The Legend of Black Shuck."The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. We have all been guilty of wishing we had more money coming in. Some people go out and get a second job. Others look at what they have to sell online, or look at what skills they have to offer to the public that they could charge money for. Or you can go the route of Georgia Tann – her entrepreneurial spirit brought her millions of dollars. And it was a simple idea. Steal other people's children, and then sell them! (How To Get Rich By Stealing and Selling Children) *** We'll look at some historic serial murderers and the strange and unusual ways they killed their victims. (Strange Predilections in Murder Methods) *** When it comes to planning the burial of someone, it's always best to to keep in mind that whomever is watching how you treat the deceased might be in charge of deciding what happens to you when you die. Sadly, one undertaker, Millard F. Rodgers, apparently forgot about the golden rule – and committed gruesome acts against families. (Six Children, One Grave) *** Residents in the town of Blakeney are reporting something horrifying prowling around the neighborhood and backyards… something they describe as a devil dog… a hell hound… a black shuck. Hello and welcome back to the Hallowed Histories strand of Winters tales, and tonight we have a real classic for you. The Adventure of the Dancing Men is a classic slice of Sherlock Holmes, and one set in North Walsham. We're breaking it into two parts for you, so stay tuned for the conclusion in a couple of days. Arthur Conan Doyle was a frequent visitor to East Anglia, and as we covered in our episode on Black Shuck, he drew inspiration from Norfolk's demon dog to create one of his most iconic creations – the Hound of the Baskervilles. During another visit to Happisburgh in 1903, Conan Doyle noticed the sketches of the landlord's son in the hotel he was staying. These dancing stick figure men became the inspiration for the macabre code that is at the heart of this story. Conan Doyle was a man with many interests – golf, folklore, walking, ghost stories, you know, all those things that we do best around here. Breathing life into the story is our reader, the actor David Mccabe. As with a lot of our readers this season, I met David while working on the Maddermarket theatre's revival of Dracula last November. David played what is traditionally the thankless role of Jonathan Harker, but brought enough wit and energy to his acting to make sure his performance really stood out. It was a pleasure to share a dressing room with him as well, because he is one of the most well-read men I have had the pleasure to meet, and that's always a quality to treasure. But for right now, imagine yourself in the study of the world's most famous detective, with the fire roaring, foggy London just through the window, and a case about to present itself. Contact us at hallowedhistories@gmail.com for more details and stay tuned every week until well past the twelfth night for more chills. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hallowedhistories/message

In the dark there is always something, something lurking, stalking, hunting. And with a flash of lightning in this tale a certain creature would appear and come for souls. There are many creatures of the night but if rumors are true this creature comes from the bowels of hell itself. Satan's own pet, a beast that plagued English countryside's for centuries. A hellhound. And not just any hell hound, oh no this one has its own name… The Black Shuck. A devil dog, a beast, a hell hound that has no limitations in its capacity and fears nothing. In this story we weather the storm of creature who plagued the English countryside and took lives along the way.

(Phantoms Behind The Wheel) ==========HOUR TWO: Sometimes drugs can work too well – for example, a hair-loss prevention drug could turn your own children into hairy wolfman-like monsters! (Drugs Turn Babies Into Werewolves) *** But first… it has several names all over the world such as the Bogey Beast, the Black Shuck, Hairy Jack, Padfoot, Striker, and more. But a phantom black dog by any other name is still a phantom black dog. We begin with that story. (Phantom Black Dogs) *** Dalton Highway is already a scary road for those driving down the ice-covered highways of Alaska. The loneliness on the barren stretch of highway can go on for hours without seeing a single soul. But for one ice road trucker, that solitude would be interrupted by something terrifying and unexplainable. (The Terror On Dalton Highway) *** Forget hats, sunglasses and knee watches—the summer accessory you didn't know you need is a poison-detecting guinea pig carrying case! (Guinea Pig Drinking Buddy)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: More stories from “Phantoms Behind the Wheel” *** The dark practice of body snatching was a lucrative business, committed by those with a strong stomach and a willingness to disturb the dead to turn a profit. (Body Snatchers) *** Megalodon died out millennia ago. But our fascination with this mighty shark will never go extinct. We are so obsessed with this ancient leviathan that people still claim to spot Megalodon even today – but that couldn't be, could it? (The Return of Megalodon) *** Megalodon isn't the only creature of the deep people report sighting. For centuries a denizen of oceanic monsters have allegedly been seen – but the question is whether or not they are fact or fantasy. (Sea Myths or Sea Monsters) *** Hunters come across a strange note left behind by someone who claimed he'd been stuck in the wilderness for over a week and was out picking berries, but the hunters soon realized there was no one out berry-picking, for the person who wrote the note was already dead – and had been for over two weeks. The Devil's Hounds | British FolkloreThroughout Britain, sightings of spectral black dogs are a common and deeply ingrained in British folklore. These supernatural creatures are feared and revered in equal measure, with each region having its own version of a phantom hound. In Yorkshire, the Barghest or Padfoot is said to roam, while Hertfordshire is menaced by the Leandog. Lancashire is home to The Grim, and Linconshire is haunted by the infamous 'Hairy Jack'. Even Devon is not immune with the presence of the Yeth Hound. Other counties such as Bedfordshire, Surrey, and Wiltshire have also reported sightings of black dogs. Wales and Scotland have their own unique legends of spectral hounds too. However, of all these tales, one stands out as the most terrifying and infamous - that of Black Shuck.Subscribe to our PATREONEMAIL us your storiesFollow us on YOUTUBEJoin us on INSTAGRAMJoin us on TWITTERJoin us on FACEBOOKVisit our WEBSITEThanks so much all for letting us share your stories!Research LinkResearch LinkResearch LinkResearch LinkRetelling of this StoryThanks so much for listening and we'll catch up with you again next week for some more true, scary stories.Sarah and Tobie xx"Spacial Winds" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Find Weird Darkness wherever you listen to podcasts: https://linktr.ee/weirddarkness IN THIS EPISODE: We'll look at some historic serial murderers and the strange and unusual ways they killed their victims. (The Black Shuck of Blakeney) *** We have all been guilty of wishing we had more money coming in.
