After that, we take our stab at proper top 10 lists and go over some of our favorite film discoveries we made this year. This will be Jason's last episode for the year as he gears up for a very special vacation. Join us in wishing him well on his trip. Dustin will continue his J-Horror Journal to close out 2024 and look for Genre Exposure to return proper in full force next year. In the small town of Burkittsville, Maryland, student filmmakers Heather, Josh and Mike, head into the woods to document the folklore tale of the Blair Witch. Unable to find their way out, the filmmakers are terrorised by forces unseen. The Blair Witch Project changed the landscape of cinema. It popularised a new form of horror movie, used the burgeoning internet to its advantage when marketing the film, and as a result became one of the most profitable films ever made. All The Right Movies are lost, angry in the woods, and no one is here to help us. That's our motivation. Shownotes: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/vrz8v38gkkil0mm503z6x/44-Hype-Viralit-t-Shownotes.docx?rlkey=b2d0upzjelqhbyashtq9s68k1&st=m9fvs1vg&dl=0

Grab your backpack, snacks, flashlight & a map (ok, just bring your cell) and visit the lovely countryside just beyond the historic village of Burkittsville. This week we're hiking downstream and still getting lost in this post-grunge viral internet sensation that ignited the found footage subgenre. Heather, Josh, & Mike deserve all the love (and $$$$) for their role in this flick's success. The Blair Witch Project takes filmmaking (and arts and crafts) to a fun, creepy, and intrusive place!

As the leaves turn colors and the weather becomes crisp an annual event occurs in another one of Frederick County Maryland's hidden jewel towns, the Spook Hill Wine and Cider 4K in Burkittsville. The Steeples and Peoples podcast was able to sit down with race director, Bill Susa and discuss the event and some of the history behind Burkittsville and the museum that highlights it. Starting October with three trips deep into some backwoods. A gaggle of Mardi Gras tourists take a haunted boat tour through the bayou outside of New Orleans. Unfortunately, the boat soon sinks and the tour group find themselves stranded right in front of the home of Victor Crowley, a violent spirit of revenge. Will anyone make it back to the bright lights, plastic beads of the city? Will they all be picked off in cartoonishly violent ways before dawn? Will Victor Crowley ever stay down? All these questions have the same answer in Adam Green's Hatchet. The proud new owners of an idyllic lake side vacation home hidden deep in the woods have a less than relaxing time on their first trip to the property. After an awkward encounter and watery rescue, they find themselves under constant attack from a group of suicidal college kids. Nine college friends are going for a camping trip. After they are accosted by a threatening man, who later kidnaps their friend, they will try desperately to save her. Will an inability to properly express themselves lead to death and ruin for all? Can the hapless home owners find the vacation home of their dreams? Or will all be swallowed whole after Tucker & Dale vs Evil? In the Black Hills of Maryland, outside the small town of Burkittsville, the spirit of a witch, put to death in 1888, might be waiting to prey on any who stumble into her woods. In 1994 Heather, Mike, and Josh set out to make a documentary about this myth and were never seen again. One year later, their footage was found. One of the most profitable films of all time, thanks in part to the first truly viral marketing campaign of the internet era, and popularized the found footage style, The Blair Witch Project. All that and Dave gets a jump on the challenge, Tyler remembers his whimsical youth, Kevin unfolds his plans for domination, and Craig contemplates a horrible inevitability. Join us, won't you? Under the umbrella of horror, you find many different sub-genres that make up this diverse film genre. From monster movies to slasher films, from the supernatural to giallo, horror has many faces. In 1999, we saw the emergence of a sub-genre that wasn't exactly new but certainly had never made such a splash. When three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary, audiences had no idea what they were in store for. As the iconic poster ominously revealed, their footage was found. “The Blair Witch Project” was not only a box office smash, it will also the beginning of a new wave of found footage horror. A sub-genre that allows a fertile proving ground for independent filmmakers not only for its budget friendly framework (usually handheld camera work, no need for elaborate effects or name stars, typically common locations) but also because with the right hook, the found footage sub-genre has the potential to feel more real and immersive then the high gloss films made in Hollywood. Though there have been plenty of great found footage films since “Blair Witch” (here's looking at you “Paranormal Activity”, “REC” and “Lake Mungo” to name a few), few have got under my skin as much as the new found footage film “The Outwaters”. The films creator is Robbie Banfitch. When a group of four friends head out into the Mojave Desert on a camping expedition, we know it's probably not going to go well for them. However, Robbie Banfitch isn't content to give us the usual redneck cannibals or ghouls in the hills… oh no. He's planning to drag us kicking and screaming into the abyss. This film takes no prisoners. It's steeped in dread and offers no hand-holding. Robbie delves into what makes the found footage sub-genre so unique, why “The Blair Witch Project” remains as relevant as ever, working with what you have on location and why he's not a fan of catering to audience expectation. Charge your camcorder batteries and grab your flashlight as we explore the terrifying world of “The Outwaters” with filmmaker Robbie Banfitch. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Grab your camping gear, camera equipment, and trusty map and join Troy and Roger as they head into the woods of Burkittsville, Maryland to discuss the highly influential, yet highly divisive, found footage shocker The Blair Witch Project. This week's episode takes Adam to a Burkittsville, Maryland Applebees to sit down with home renovator Glenda Phipps (the ridiculously funny Mary Holland). Glenda just recently got to work flipping the infamous Blair Witch house and returned with some strange ailmets, only twelve fingers of wine, and an order of Mozzarella sticks can repair. Don't miss it. ________________ SHOW INFORMATION Twitter: @MyDeadNeighbors Instagram: @MyNeighborsAreDead Email: MyNeighborsAreDead@gmail.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/myneighborsaredead Merchandise: TeePublic Subscribe: Apple Podcasts Subscribe: Spotify

"The Blair Witch Project" is an example of an indie masterpiece and at the same time being a horror film. The decision to make the film feel realistic led partially to the power of the film, the acting is incredible that it makes you feel like you're amongst the trio of characters. I also discuss how things just gets worse in matters of sequences.
In October of 1994 three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary...A year later their footage was found. Found footage films the rawest genre in horror. They are simple but effective and it pushes you to the point where you ask "is this real". --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/james-g-brooks-iii/support
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas take a hike in the woods and discover some old videotapes from some film students who went missing while shooting a documentary about a fabled witch. It's Week Two (Witch Week) of our Halloween mini-arc – VAMPIRES, WITCHES, AND WEREWOLVES, OH MY – and we are talking about the 1999 sleeper hit that invented modern film marketing, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Earning over 4000 times its shoe-string budget back at the box office, the film brought the found-footage genre into the mainstream; completely blurring the lines of fact and fiction. Audiences were confused if they had just seen a snuff film, debates raged in the early days of the internet, and countless individuals flocked to the town of Burkittsville, Maryland to learn more about the Blair Witch, Rustin Parr, and the fate of the missing film students (all of which were a complete fabrication). The Blair Witch Project is one of the most successful independent movies of all-time. Numerous films would parody it, and even more tried to duplicate its formula, but it is a one of a kind cultural achievement of the late-1990s. Tune in as we dig into all the legend and lore surrounding this movie, and question how it holds up over two decades later... If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! Joined by Guest Tangler Kevin Nolan: This week the Tanglers head back to Burkittsville, Maryland in October of 1994, when the events that were depicted in the Blair Witch Project were unfolding... Allegedly. They discuss the rise of the horror film genre, some of their personal favorites, as well as movies and moments that had them genuinely terrified. After a quick stroll through the town Kevin shares about his experiences with ghost hunting, from the equipment used to what it's like going on actual investigations. He was also kind enough to tell us about some of his personal run-ins with the supernatural and unexplained. Oh, and somehow they managed to delay the existence of an entire film genre, create "Star Trek 2: Doves in Space", and completely shut down the new Star Wars sequels... Again. But at least they figured out a way to give the world a little more Jar Jar Binks. Stay tuned for a post credits stinger featuring the one and only Fred Stoller.
What up Spooky Bitches! This week Bryan, Shane, & Jen review a 90's found-footage staple, The Blair Witch Project. Many horror fans and critics often refer to this movie as one of the scariest of the decade, if not ever. Growing up, we all were fans of this one and decide to review it years later to see if the mystique of the film holds up. Found footage films are not for everyone, but one thing that is undeniable is the success of this film. It was a box office juggernaut grossing $248.6M total on a budget of about $500K. Some of the marketing tactics were to claim the actors were missing as a result of filming the project to add a sense of realism to the movie. It just so happens that three film students researching the local legend of the Blair Witch in the Burkittsville, Maryland woods leave their documentary footage behind. What is captured on film is all that's left of their investigation. As always, a special thanks to Green Knuckle Material for our new music.
