Show Notes Episode 510: “Smack My Witch Up” Part Two of Spooktacular 2025 This week Host Dave Bledsoe got drunk and lost in a Haunted Corn Maze and terrified an entire Church Group when he stumbled out without any pants. (Again) On the show this week the Spooktacular takes us to witch panics and trials throughout history. (Modern included) Along the way we learn Dave considered himself a victim of witch hunt because he was accused of trying to sleep with college age women. (Which he was definitely doing.) Then we move right into the Protestant Reformation, which reformed Europe into a WHOLE bunch of brutality wars. (Not that they needed an excuse.) Then we dig into how random old women with skin conditions were accused of sexual liaisons with demons all over Europe and America. (Warts are a demon turn on) We turn to the colonies to learn how and why Salem was a hot bed of witch activity and why it stopped. (Religion and Money. Spoiler alert.) Finally we examine the status of witch hunts today. Our Sponsor this week is Turgidson and Smythe, Barristers of Witches, for not every hag is, in truth, a witch. We open the show with a visit from the Witchfinder and close with The Gitarinet Duo who are disciplinarians. This week, we discuss two pioneering British folk horror films. The first is The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971). Set in early 18th-century England, it follows the residents of a rural village whose youth fall under the influence of a demonic presence after a local farmer unearths a mysterious deformed skull buried in a field. The second is Witchfinder General (1968). The film is a heavily fictionalised account of the murderous witch-hunting exploits of Matthew Hopkins, a lawyer who falsely claimed to have been appointed as a Witchfinder General by Parliament during the English Civil War to root out sorcery and witchcraft. Well now. It turns out that 19 albums (technically 20 if you include Heaven & Hell's only album, The Devil You Know) is rather a lot. So our two parter has become a three parter. Whoops. But we tackle their discography with someone who knows the band inside out - Richard Bruce, from the band Moonshine Docks and formerly of Coffin Mulch. His encyclopedic knowledge of the band stands us in very good stead as we go about the business of talking about the band and their albums in detail. In this episode we chat about the band's history and then dive into all the Ozzy records, essentially covering all of the band's 1970s output. It's a pretty fascinating journey, and we really enjoyed getting to grips with the "classic" Sabbath material. Next week - Dio, Gillian, Hughes and Martin all come to the Sabbath party. Reaction to Aron interview = 13:05 Lyrical duties = 19:29 Ozzy solo charade and cutting folk out of credits = 20:09 the Beatles influence and pre mobile phone tours = 29:26 KIss is the American Slade = 34:27 West Midlands hard music and WC blokes plus G Harrison = 36:55 BUying the wrong Sabbath record = 40:46 Were Sabbath actually very satanic? We're back with another episode in our "What The Folk!?" Season, and really getting our first in depth look at the great Vincent Price on the show surprisingly enough, but we dig deep into his unique legacy as well as how this film essentially spawned a whole subgenre of horror for a time. Welcome to Witch Hunt, the podcast raising awareness of the violent reality of modern witchcraft accusations. Rather than being a relic of the past, witchcraft accusations remain a devastating issue in many parts of the world, leading to violence, ostracization, economic deprivation, mental health crises, and even death. In recognition of this global crisis, August 10th has been designated World Day Against Witch Hunts. This year's theme, "Exposing the Witchfinders," focuses on those who incite violence by suggesting witchcraft as the cause of problems or identifying individuals as witches. Today's episode examines the role of witchfinders—individuals exploiting faith and belief for personal gain. We'll explore who they are, their operations, motivations, and the profound impact they have on their victims. Including key insights in the voices of global advocates who have been guests on our podcast, we invite you to join us as we uncover the stark reality behind witchcraft accusations and advocate for a world free from such violence. Our journey Beyond Hammerland concludes with one of the series' most harrowing films!Michael Reeves' 1968 drama, Witchfinder General stars Vincent Price as Matthew Hopkins, the titular judge, jury, and executioner wandering the English countryside in a quest to snuff out evil--at least that's what he tells any townsfolk willing to pay him to exorcise local "witches"! When he and his blood-hungry sidekick, Stearne (Robert Russell), accuse and dispatch a beloved priest, they find themselves in a gruesome game of cat-and-mouse with the priest's niece and her soldier husband. The result is one of the most shocking Hammer-adjacent films you'll ever see!In this year-end extravaganza, Ian and AC dig into Witchfinder General's odd and tragic history; its influence on late-60s American cinema; and the masterful ways in which Reeves conjures terrifying moments from non-supernatural horrors! Also, they guys look back on some of their favorite 2023 "Beyond Hammerland" entries, and tease what's to come in 2024!Subscribe, like, and comment to the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel, and check out kickseat.com for multiple movie podcasts each week! http://www.kickseat.com/Subscribe, like, and comment to the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel, and check out kickseat.com for multiple movie podcasts each week!Show LinksWatch the Witchfinder General (1968) trailer.Order AC's books on essential and obscure horror movies, Horror 101 and Hidden Horror!Subscribe to AC's YouTube channel, Horror 101 with Dr. AC.It's not too late to catch up with our 2023 trip “Beyond Hammerland”!Check out 2022's year-long journey, "Son of Hammerland"!And watch the series that started it all: "Hammerland"!
Wes and Nick tackle a movie about witches and the general who hunts them and makes them confess with the dumbest made up tests ever!Plot:England is torn in civil strife as the Royalists battle the Parliamentary Party for control. This conflict distracts people from rational thought and allows unscrupulous men to gain local power by exploiting village superstitions. One of these men is Matthew Hopkins, who tours the land offering his services as a persecutor of witches. Aided by his sadistic accomplice John Stearne, he travels from city to city and wrenches confessions from "witches" in order to line his pockets and gain sexual favors. When Hopkins persecutes a priest, he incurs the wrath of Richard Marshall, who is engaged to the priest's niece. Risking treason by leaving his military duties, Marshall relentlessly pursues the evil Hopkins and his minion Stearne.Support the show:

We're taking a brief intermission from our Shyamalamarama series to bring you a handful of discussions on the subgenre known as "folk horror", which we've lovingly titled #whatthefolk. We start with the 1968 film WITCHFINDER GENERAL, starring Vincent Price as the historical figure Matthew Hopkins, who executed more than 300 people for the crime of witchcraft in just under 3 years. We're joined by author and scholar Leland Merritt, whose work on folk horror and its relationship to the Hebrew Bible provides some incredible insights to both the genre and the more challenging narratives we find in the scriptures.**A special note of consideration** Although the film exercises restraint in its visual representation, it does contain instances and discussions of sexual assault. Our conversation addresses these as well as similar instances in Biblical texts and we want to give awareness for sensitive listeners. We have a very thoughtful and insightful conversation that we hope you'll hear and enjoy as always, although discretion is advised.3:36 - Business TimePatron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?5:11 - Getting to know special guest, Leland Merritt15:30 - Getting to know the Folk Horror Subgenre33:55 - WITCHFINDER GENERALSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In 1645, the English Civil War caused a great divide in England - on both sides, the destruction, violence and famine were all blamed on malevolent witches, cursing towns and villages all throughout the countryside to fulfill their pacts with the devil. Thankfully, King Charles I endorsed a duo of witch-hunters, led by Matthew Hopkins to identify and condemn as many accused witches as they could lay eyes on, leading to national and international fame and infamy. Over their careers, Hopkins and his partner John Stearne torturously forced confessions and sent more people to the gallows than all witch-hunters for the prior 160 years combined, and Hopkins' book ‘The Discovery of Witches' eventually became the inspiration for the Salem Witch Trials when it arrived on American shores. History may have forgotten about Matthew Hopkins' insidious influence, but we sure haven't! CHET CHET everyone! We are back at the good old House of Enlightenment for a fun little siege, all set to the dulcet tunes of Guns & Roses "Welcome To The Jungle." Sybeth is back and this time she's making all the disgruntled Witchfinders forget about the fact that she destroyed their homes and killed their families, and instead enlists them back in her service with the simple argument that "She's their queen!" Yas Queen. Yas. Then Tormada shows up at the House of Enlightenment to get his bombs and finds Boba Voss and crew there instead. Turns out, Boba and the three sighted people with him now have access to a TON of guns that they simply don't use, and Tormada is able to escape with all the bombs they originally went there to destroy. But how he chose to test one woman for witchcraft is enough to make your stomach turn. *** A young couple discover a radio… with a mind of its own. *** A strange ball of light enters the room of a young man, with no explanation to be found. *** Sheldwich is typical of the small rural hamlets which litter Kent, but in some ways, is far more unique and strange, one could almost say, weird. *** Did our ancestors fight and survive an ancient zombie apocalypse? Can a zombie apocalypse really happen, and if it does, what are our chances of survival?SOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…“Sheldwich Kent: Ghosts, Ghouls, and Pagan Gods” Written by G.
