From 18th century London to the promise of a global cure: the 200-year history of Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's, a neurodegenerative disorder most commonly characterized by tremors and other motor symptoms, is so complex, many medical professionals are starting to classify it as a group of diseases, rather than a single disease. In this episode, we explain those complexities, including: • The motor symptoms (e.g. cogwheel rigidity, bradykinesia) and non-motor symptoms (e.g. depression, sleep disorders) • How the industrial revolution may have brought about environmental factors which contribute to Parkinson's • The differences and similarities between Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer's • How Parkinson's manifests in our brains • Why one nurse was able to detect Parkinson's through smell • The neurogenetics of Parkinson's, and the ethical quandaries of evolving genetic technology • Why lifestyle — nutrition, exercise, etc. — is so key to preventing and managing Parkinson's Joining us for this extensive conversation are three incredible guests: • Dr. Rachel Dolhun, Senior Vice President of Medical Communications at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research • Dr. Michael Okun, evolutionary biologist, movement disorders specialist, and Director of the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases • Dr. Matthew Farrer, neurogenetics expert and Professor Of Neurology at the University of Florida ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neurologists, scientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the man who, in 1905, produced several papers that were to change the world of physics and whose name went on to become a byword for genius. This was Albert Einstein, then still a technical expert at a Swiss patent office, and that year of 1905 became known as his annus mirabilis ('miraculous year'). While Einstein came from outside the academic world, some such as Max Planck championed his theory of special relativity, his principle of mass-energy equivalence that followed, and his explanations of Brownian Motion and the photoelectric effect. Yet it was not until 1919, when a solar eclipse proved his theory that gravity would bend light, that Einstein became an international celebrity and developed into an almost mythical figure. In this episode of “In Stride,” Sinead is joined by Grand Prix dressage rider and trainer Barend Heilbron. Barend Heilbron graduated from the Dutch Equestrian Center NHC, where he learned about different disciplines, horse care, barn management, psychology, and more. It is one of the world's most recognized colleges specializing in equestrian education. This school is similar to the Warendorf School in Germany. In 1987, he moved to the U.S. and worked for Marty Simonson before starting a training business in New Hampshire. In 2015, he moved to Ocala, FL, where he currently runs Islands Farms with his wife, Anne-Marie Heilbron. In this episode, Barend discusses various topics related to training and riding, including: • Common misunderstanding of the aids in dressage and eventing. • Teaching in a way that allows the student to recreate the ride on their own. • The difference in equestrian studies in Holland vs. the U.S. • Integrating horse psychology into the world of competitive sport horses. • His explanation and approach to collection, half-halting, and connection. Join Barend and Sinead in this exciting conversation on training dressage horses.

At the start of the 20th century, physicists probed the structure of nature. Their discoveries changed our fundamental understanding of matter, of life, and of war. At the center of these discoveries stood the Danish physicist Niels Bohr. Bohr approached problems of atomic structure and quantum theory with a philosophical perspective and an ability to skirt paradoxes with his principle of complementarity. Perhaps as important as Bohr's discoveries on the atom was his hosting of international collaborations at his institute in Copenhagen, which in turn led to fundamental insights in physics and chemistry. Bohr also played significant humanitarian and diplomatic roles during World War II in Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Many Jewish refugee scientists passed through Bohr's institute after escaping Nazi Germany, and Bohr then facilitated their immigration to safe harbors. With us to decipher Bohr's complex legacy is John Heilbron. John is a member of the International Academy of the History of Science, for which he served as president from 2001-2005. He is also a member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and The American Philosophical Society. He is the recipient of many awards for his scholarship on the history of science.

https://youtu.be/ud_MB9GwFfg For the last fifty years, virtually all historians of science— including A. C. Crombie, David Lindberg, Edward Grant, Stanley Jaki, Thomas Goldstein, and J. L. Heilbron—have concluded that the Scientific Revolution was indebted to the Church. The Catholic contribution to science went well beyond ideas—including theological ideas—to accomplished practicing scientists, many of whom were priests. For example, Father Nicholas Steno, a Lutheran convert who became a Catholic priest, is often identified as the father of geology. The father of Egyptology was Father Athanasius Kircher. The first person to measure the rate of acceleration of a freely falling body was yet another priest, Father Giambattista Riccioli. Father Roger Boscovich is often credited as the father of modern atomic theory. Jesuits so dominated the study of earthquakes that seismology became known as “the Jesuit science.” And that is far from all. Even though some thirty-five craters on the moon are named for Jesuit scientists and mathematicians, the Church's contributions to astronomy are all but unknown to the average educated American. Thomas E. Woods Jr., Ph.D., How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization (Regnery Publishing, Inc., 2005) p. 4 This episode is dedicated to the life and memory of Ed McHale (1979-2022). Edward Andrew McHale, age 42, born in Phoenix, AZ, left this world too soon on January 16, 2022. Ed is survived by his wife, Christine McHale, and five children, Ruby, Declan, Mikey, Frances and Theo. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence McHale and Madeleine McHale. The baby of six siblings, this father and legend is known to many as “Coach Ed.” He was a man who truly lived his life for others; for his family, his students and anyone he met. He knew everyone by name and no one who knew him could forget his contagious laugh or famous ‘dad jokes.' A man of great faith, he loved to walk and pray his rosary, meet with other dads to pray, and take his family to mass on Sunday. He loved to teach, swim, wrestle, hike, play volleyball, and play catch with his kids, and of course cheer on his Cardinals and Suns! He would always tell his wife that she made him a better man but truly it was he who made her better and his love for life and appreciating the small things and every moment made everyone around him better. May we learn from his example to count your blessings and love every moment, to soak up every hug with your children, to live life to the fullest even when everything around you tells you, you need more when right in front of you, you already have it all. He will truly be missed by many and will forever leave his print of love and laughter on this world. *Help his widow and five children here*: Go Fund Me ------ Guest: Andrew of the Popular Liberty Show Odysee BitChute Flote Archive Spotify Apple Podcasts

Galileo occupies an inflection point in the history of science and society. Born in 1564, Galileo changed the trajectory of science though his work in astronomy, physics and related fields. He invented various clever devices, and he used the telescope to push the boundaries of knowledge about our solar system and Earth’s place in it. Galileo’s discoveries, and the manner in which he presented them in his 1632 book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, hurled his fate into the judgements of the Roman Inquisition. Galileo recanted after he was found “vehemently suspect of heresy”. The inquisitors sentenced Galileo with the unusual punishment of house arrest, where he remained until his death in 1642. The Dialogue represented much more than a book on Copernican heliocentrism – that is, that the Earth rotates daily and revolves around the sun. The Dialogue also became a cudgel in the European conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, and the fate of the book in the midst of the Inquisition placed Galileo’s lot in a precarious position. Did Galileo give a copy of the book to its Latin translator, which facilitated its distribution throughout Europe? Was Galileo’s recanting of heliocentrism genuine, or did he continue to spread heretical views while under house arrest? How did Galileo run afoul of a Pope who had previously supported his work? The questions surrounding the Dialogue live on, and with us to decipher the controversy is John Heilbron. John received AB and MA degrees in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1955 and 1958, respectively. He completed his Ph.D. in history, also at Berkeley, in 1964. He then taught at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to Berkeley in 1967, where he worked his way through the ranks of academia to a full professorship and director of the Office for History of Science and Technology in 1973. He served as Berkeley’s Vice Chancellor in the early 1990s, and since then has been active as a professor emeritus. Since 1996, John has also conducted research at the University of Oxford, and since 2012 at the California Institute of Technology. John has written numerous books, and today we discuss his latest, a beautifully written book entitled, The Ghost of Galileo in a Forgotten Painting from the English Civil War, published in 2021 by Oxford University Press.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
This is the second of Historically Thinking’s yearlong series on the the skills of historical thinking. In our first installment this year, which was Episode 196, we heard cognitive psychologist Daniel Willingham explain reading comprehension, without which none of the other skills really work. Today in the podcast's 200th episode we’re going to tackle Connecting. If we put connecting into the form of a question, it would be something like “How does this document [or any other source, from portraits to shoes to stone walls] fit into a bigger picture?” Connecting joins together information from various sources, near and far from each other. It compares & contrasts, it corroborates testimony, it observes interesting links. Connecting introduces the idea that history is first a way of seeing, before it can become a way of thinking. There’s no better way to discuss connecting, or any other skill of historical thinking, than to consider an exemplar of that skill. If you were trying to craft a silver teapot, you wouldn’t want to read a book about it, not even a stack of books. You’d want to watch a master craftsman at work, and be able to ask lots of questions; maybe even have a go at it yourself, under their careful and experienced eye. Today’s exemplar is the book The Ghost of Galileo…in a Forgotten Painting from the English Civil War, just published by Oxford University Press. Its author and our guest is John Lawrence Heilbron, Professor of History at the University of California at Berkeley, where he is also Vice Chancellor Emeritus. Professor Heilbron is a native of the Bay Area, and earned both his AB and MA in Physics from Berkeley, before continuing on at Berkeley to take a PhD Degree in the History of Science under the direction of Thomas S. Kuhn. He has also served as Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Museum for the History of Science, and is an Honorary Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford. His work has ranged across the history of physics and astronomy, from Niels Bohr: A Very Short Introduction (also published by Oxford) to my favorite The Sun in the Church: Cathedrals as Solar Observatories. He now divides his time between Berkeley and west Oxfordshire, where his local is the Rose and Crown in Shilton.
John Heilbron, professor of history and vice-chancellor emeritus of the University of California, Berkeley, is one of our most distinguished - and prolific - historians of science. His latest book, The Ghost of Galileo In a Forgotten Painting from the English Civil War (Oxford University Press, 2021), records how, during a tour of an English country house, he stumbled across what might be the earliest visual reference to Galileo outside portraiture. Heilbron's quest to understand this reference has resulted in a long and extraordinary account of debates in early modern science, religion, and medicine. Heilbron explains that there are reasons why a jobbing artist, working in the royalist base of Oxford during the first English civil war, might include in a double portrait of a tutor and his melancholy pupil this reference to recent trends in cosmology. In this lavishly illustrated and copiously argued book, Heilbron sets new agendas for our understanding of the politics of royalism, the material contexts of portraiture, and the religious significance of science. This week we're heading to 1643 - a year of conflict and strife in the English Civil War. Our guest is the distinguished historian of science, Professor John Heilbron. Heilbron opted to travel back to Royalist Oxford, a university city teeming with action. Amid it all he finds a stranglely unstudied history lurking in the colleges. It's a story that is captured in a painting of a young scholar and his tutor, who sits beside a copy of Galileo's Dialogues. See the painting discussed in this episode here. The characters and stories in this episode feature in JL Heilbron's new book, The Ghost of Galileo, which has been recently published by Oxford University Press. Proprio come avrebbe voluto Planck. Fonti: John L. Heilbron, I dilemmi di Max Planck (1988), traduzione di Riccardo Valla, ed. Stony Brook director of athletics Shawn Heilbron joins The Howl to discuss the framework for the upcoming basketball season and other topics.
Cassie Heilbron is the recipe creator and food photographer behind Cook It Real Good - a food blog that focuses on quick, easy and healthy recipes, with a bit of indulgence mixed in between for good measure. Cassie Heilbron started her first blog – Be Forever Healthier – in early 2017. The blog focused on healthy recipes, health tips and life hacks. But after a few short months Cassie realized she was really only interested in food, so she narrowed down her focus to healthy recipes. As the years went by, this no longer felt like the right fit for Cassie, who’s food philosophy is everything in moderation, including moderation. So earlier this year she rebranded to Cook It Real Good and opened up her niche to include not just foods that are good for you but also foods that are good for the soul Cassie also hosts the Cook It Real Good podcast, where she shares cooking hacks and tips with home cooks.
Today I'm interviewing Cassie Heilbron of Cook it Real Good. Cassie’s blog focuses on quick, easy, and healthy recipes with some indulgence sprinkled in between. Cassie is a self-taught cook who focuses on food that is fresh, fast, and flavorful. She cooks with every day ingredients and uses as little dishes as possible because she hates washing dishes. Cassie started her first blog, Be Forever Healthier, in January of 2017 which featured healthy recipes, tips, and exercise advice, but over time Cassie realized she was far more interested in recipe creation and food photography. Since then, she's moved her focus solely to food and rebranded her site. In this episode, Cassie shares about her journey to becoming and evolving as a food blogger, info from this year’s Everything Food Conference, how to make salads that excite, and tips for easy yet delicious meals you can make tonight. For Cherie Blair, leading barrister and QC, picking her great life was simple - her role model is Rose Heilbron, England's first woman judge. When Cherie was growing up in Liverpool, Rose Heilbron was always the name that excited her grandmother the most. Rose was a barrister and when she was arguing a case before a jury in her home city, Cherie Blair's grandmother would follow her cases avidly, sometimes from the public gallery. Then she would come back and tell young Cherie all about what had gone on. And so Heilbron became a great example of what a Liverpool girl could achieve in the law. And she had a remarkable career - first woman in silk, first to lead in a murder case, first woman treasurer of Gray's Inn. It's the morning of 10th June 1900, and we're riding with General Christian de Wet who is about to make Lord Kitchener's acquaintance far from the capital Pretoria, where Lord Roberts has bivouacked with his 16 000 troops, expecting the Boers to quit fighting. But they don't. In the Free State, General de Wet has been creating his own brand of guerilla warfare which the British realise suddenly is likely to extend the conflict at least for a few weeks. Once again they're wrong - the war is about to extend for two more years and worse for the British, the new brand of highly mobile hit and run warfare has never been seen. Their response eventually is to design one of the most terrifying tools created by man - the concentration camp. Furthermore, the reason why this historic moment is so discernable from previous tactics of the same is the complexity of the Boer military structure and their complete dominance of the veld, the plains of South Africa. They're the Sioux or Apache warriors of South Africa but with the latest weapons, heavily armed and mightily motivated, supplied surrepticiously and constantly moving. And de Wet is the master of his landscape, but he's about to meet a man who eventually became one of the most hated in Southern Africa by Boer and even black South Africans - the man who was to perfect the idea of the concentration camp - Lord Kitchener. So its the morning of June 10th, and its winter in South Africa. Kitchener has around 15 000 men under his command, de Wet a few hundred. And the Boer commander is using the British weak link as his attack point - the railway line between the inland cities and the ports of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London. De Wet is in a quandry. If he continues to attack the railway line, eventually Kitchener will catch him or surround his little force, particularly on the open plains around Heilbron and Vredefortweg. There are no large ranges of mountains to use as strategic points, they lie further south east along the Drakensburg and the Lesotho border. So he must rely on his wits and false trails. He says in his book Three Year's War: “I gave orders that the few wagons which we had with us should proceed in the direction of Kroonstad.. to the west of the line, once out of sight they were to turn sharply to the West and continue in that direction. This manoeuvre I hoped would serve to mislead the enemy, who was on the lookout for us…”
