POPULARITY
Believe it or not, I did hear a cicada chirping just a few days ago. Must have been a Late-Comer Boy, trying to attract a female. The buzzing sound is made in the Tymbals (on the belly side of the insect). It literally is a quick clicking sound that creates a smooth buzzing. If you hear clapping as well, it will be smacking the wings on the abdomen. Egg-laying is very easy to spot: a characteristic “Herring bone” pattern on twigs with a thickness of a pencil. We're also not far away from the end of the Black Field Crickets' truuu truuuu truuu singing in the evening. The further north you go, the longer you'll hear those quite loud sounds in your lawn. They're male mating calls, attracting females who are laying eggs in soil to hatch next spring (November). Damage: eat a lot of grass from lawn/paddock. Easily attracted to lights, and noisy all night. A fabulous characteristic rasping sound can be heard during the nighttime, starting about 30 minutes after dark: the sound is made by both male and female tree weta. They communicate to keep in touch – Auckland and Wellington tree weta are rather social species. They live in harem-like communities with a dominant (large-headed) male and a couple of mature females, plus some juveniles. They shelter during the day in the same cavity. This is mating season and often you can hear frequent communications. Females lay eggs in soft soil, and young ones emerge in spring. Go outside into the garden with a torch and you'll find them – patience! In the afternoon to early evening, you can often hear a faint “Zzitssss” noise – often impossible to tell where it originates. It's usually a call with an irregular pattern, and it's unmistakable as Katydids. These orthopterans have the ability to “throw their voice” —like ventriloquists— to put off possible predators that may hunt by following the noise to its source. They chew buds of flowers and foliage and can do a bit of cosmetic damage to roses and dahlias in autumn (although Julie tends to disagree with that statement – she moves them on with force!). Generally speaking, the katydids overwinter as eggs and hatch again in springtime as “nymphs”: miniature versions of the adult insect. But I have seen a few of them going right through the winter, snacking of tasty leaves of Mistletoes in the garden. No doubt they shelter from the occasional frosts by staying deep within the host plants LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A few weeks ago, after that yucky and cold spell in the middle of winter, I was checking my mistletoe to see how it had been coping under those chilly and frosty conditions. Looked okay, but there were a few bite marks on the leaves. Hmmm… nothing worrying about though. Ileostylus micranthus is the green mistletoe I “planted” on my kowhai bush a few years ago now. The sticky seeds should be adhered to the twigs of the host plant and with a bit of luck the mistletoe will settle itself on that host plant by sending its “roots” (haustoria) into the host plant. The Mistletoe can then draw its nutrients from the host. That makes it a “parasite”. Under normal circumstances, the sticky seeds are “planted” by birds. They simply try to eat the seeds but often end up wiping their bill clean on the host plant. Clever plant! My neighbour across the road also has a green mistletoe, but his specimen is situated on a Coprosma virescens bush known by its Māori name as “Mingimingi”. A gorgeous native shrub with a divaricating growth; tangled branches of orange colours and rather small leaflets. I decided to see how his green mistletoe was doing after the very cold nights. The leaves were chewed significantly – huge chunks eaten out of the edges. The last time I saw that plant it was in great condition, but this winter something or somebody must have had a real go at it. A thorough investigation revealed the culprit: an adult Katydid was hiding in the tangled branches of the Mingimingi, sitting very still and using its green camouflage. This in itself is quite a weird phenomenon, as I usually see Katydids in summer and autumn but not in winter. This native chewer-of-leaves must have found enough shelter inside the Mingimingi to survive the winter conditions and chew away at the parasitic Mistletoe! This week we look at my favorite group of orthoptera, tettigoniidae also known as katydids and bush crickets. Many people get these insects confused for others like grasshoppers or even cicadas (because of their songs) but they hold a special place in the insect class. Today we learn about their songs, behaviors, and much more. This week we are talking about the invasive and widely spread brown marmorated stink bug; why there are so many of them and why you don't want them around. The weekly podcast on all things creepy crawly with a focus on insects. Today we're going to talk about stink bugs because my god there are tons of them right now. In the fall when weather is starting to cool down a very smelly bug starts to make more and more of an appearance, but today we're focusing on a specific stink bug called that the Brown marmorated stink bug. This bug is native to China, Japan, and other Asian countries but made its way into the United States in 1998. The state of introduction was Pennsylvania but this smelly bug can now be found throughout many states both east coast and west. Coincidentally it was also introduced into Europe in 1998, but I believe this came after the American introduction. For the European listeners you guys can find these in Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and much more recently the United Kingdom (gasp). They're going to take over the world I'm sure except for Antarctica because well… who can actually stand to tolerate that wasteland. Now where you live might also have native stink bugs, so how can you tell the difference? The brown marmorated is a marbled deep brown in color. This is actually where the term marmorated comes from, and these ones have white bands on their antennae as well as a black and white stripes along the sides of their abdomen. And yes this is indeed a true bug like all stink bugs and belongs to the family pentatomidae which is in reference to its pentagonal shape. The marmorated stink bug doesn't only appear in fall though its life cycle begins in spring, but it takes a little while to reach their final form. For example they go through 5 instars or molts and each one takes a week or so to complete. They aren't anything special to look at either, making them all the more unwanted by most everyone. They're relatively small too, only reaching about 1.7cm or a little over half an inch, but their smell is incredibly strong, and is often compared with rotting vegetables. I mean if you've ever made one angry then I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. But why is it that we only seem to really notice them in the fall if they're around all summer? These little dudes do not like cold weather, and as a result are actively trying to enter places that can shield them from the cold like your house for example. Or in my case the school that I currently work at because these things are everywhere, and the best part is that my school literally leaves windows open with no screens. They're straight up asking for stink bugs and then freak out when they enter the school. But this episode isn't about the dumb things that happen at my school. So now we know these bugs love the indoors when it gets cold, and are really smelly when threatened or scared, but are they bad for us? Fortunately for you, this stink bug will not bite you, and isn't harmful to you or your pets! Sure if your dog or cat eats one they might throw up later or get an upset stomach but the bugs are not poisonous or venomous so don't go rushing them to the vet. Unless something is really wrong, but I haven't heard of any deathly allergies to stink bugs. I did learn though that people who have an allergy to cockroaches will likely have adverse reactions to the brown marmorated stink bug, and these bugs can release a pheromone to let other stink bugs know they found a good place to hibernate for the winter leading to thousands of stink bugs in your home. One Maryland household had 26,000 individuals which is totally crazy! On the bright side of things, if they do make their way into your home, garage or shed etc, they aren't going to cause damage by eating your furniture etc. They won't even reproduce in your home or eat your food. They really just want to get away from the cold, but of course I don't blame anyone for not wanting them around. And generally you don't want these bugs around. In fact New Zealand is actively trying to make sure they don't enter the island and for good reasons! Jamie I'm counting on you (idk if he still listens to this.. Hope he does!) At any rate these stink bugs are generalists feeding on 100s of plants, and when they feed on plants they cause wilting, bruising, and even less fruit production in hardwood trees. They'll even feed on the fruits themselves causing lots of losses for farmers! They're an absolute pain to deal with because a single female can lay up to 500 eggs in batches of 20 to 30 under leaves of host plants. It's also difficult to find them sometimes, especially on grape farms where they can hide in clusters of grapes. They actually affect the taste of wine too if they get poured into the mix, and this is a result of one of the chemicals they release when stressed called E-2-decenal. This compound is responsible for their stinky smell and is also found in cilantro and most of us know how controversial that plant is. Something else that was more recently discovered about these annoying little guys is that they leave an invisible footprint on the farms they're found on. For example researchers at Rutgers University found that traces of brown marmorated stink bugs were in the water that farmers were using to wash their produce. One of the farms they found it in didn't even have a visible infestation, but on the last day of their surveys a juvenile was discovered in a trap. They were wondering if finding traces of the stink bugs with no visual evidence could be a warning that an infestation is coming. Now if you're in an area that has these smelly little monsters around you probably want to know how to get rid of them or prevent them from your home. You might even wanna know regardless to prepare yourself for when they do finally show up, and that part of the show starts now. Your best line of defense starts before you've even seen the enemy. Make sure your living situation doesn't have cracks or crevices leading to the outside. They're pretty flexible despite their looks and can fit into slits that are around 4mm in height and holes that are 8mm in diameter, and yes those were statistical findings and we can thank the people at Virginia Tech for figuring those out for us. Also try and keep your outdoor lighting to a minimum if you live in an area with stink bugs. They happen to be attracted to lights at night so you're basically giving them a welcome home sign. Earlier I said they don't care about your food, and this is generally the case, but if you leave fruit out in bowls then that might also be attracting them so just keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Also if you're a household that enjoys using firewood and keeps a stack of it around outside, that could also be a prime location for stink bugs to hide. It's recommended to keep piles of wood like that at least 20ft away from your house and that's usually a good idea regardless because as we learned in the carpenter bee episode those make good little hotels for bees too. I've got a really weird one now for you. Fragrant Dryer sheets. Apparently stink bugs are not a fan of these so if you wipe down your windows and door screens etc with dryer sheets you can repel up to 80% of unwanted stink bugs. (That's pretty neat!) But some of you might be saying “But I already have them in my home! What do I do now?” I'm going to share some tips and trips but first a disclaimer. I'm not a professional in pest management. If you have a lot of stink bugs or ANYTHING in your home do yourself a favor and get a professional in there. If you don't have a serious problem and just want tips to help keep your space free of them then these tips are for you. Flick them into plastic bottles to contain their stench and pheromones Don't squash them or use hard pesticides in your home, you'll likely make the problem worse. Okay this one is pretty good, get yourself a shot vac and fill the canister with soapy water. Then just go ham and suck all the stink bugs up. It's not recommended you use a regular vacuum because the smell is incredibly pungent and can stain the lining of a regular vacuum. We've talked a lot about what these stink bugs eat and how we can get rid of them but are there any animals that willingly eat these? The answer is yes! The majority of these are other arthropods though like spiders, and predatory insects, and the life stage at which these are most consumed would be eggs. Katydids, Crickets, Slugs, Ladybugs, even other stink bugs will all happily feed on marmorated stink bug eggs, but there is one predatory that takes the cake by far, and that would be the samurai wasp Trissolcus japonicus which is native to Japan. This parasitoid wasp is responsible for over 50% of egg mortality in an egg mass, and they also prioritize the brown marmorated stink bug over other bugs. The funny part is it wasn't introduced purposefully into the states but managed to get here anyway and now people in the U.S. are like dang, can we buy these in bulk? (I'll take 20! Spongebob quote) It's also now found in Europe and Chile, and it seems to follow the marmorated stink bugs wherever they go. The best part is that they even overwinter which means that they can survive colder climates! As for purchasing these, they are not widely available like other parasitoids but maybe someday they will be. That wraps up today's episode! Pretty flowers in autumn – some are huge and some have really deep colours. Varieties are numerous in all sorts of colours and shapes and sizes; small ones, huge ones; (doubles, singles, “waterlilies”, breeders have been pretty active in this field, especially Dr Keith Hammett – ex DSIR in Auckland) NOW's the time to scout around finding what you might like yourself. Café au Lait Le Baron Kennemer Land You can buy them as plants (often cuttings) or, more commonly, as “tubers” (root structures, long-ish “bulbs”) from which the plants grow; Planting in Spring after frosty times have stopped; (established plants in the soil the tubers are reasonably protected from frosts, but newly planted tubers need frost protection!!) Where to plant those Tubers? Well-drained soil to avoid rotting; alternative: raise the bed to create a well-drained medium. Healthy soil with decent amount of compost, rock phosphate and lime – general fertiliser N-P-K. It pays to cover the plants with a good layer of compost (3 inches thick at least). It really sets them up for decent growth in spring and summer and it keeps weeds at bay; it also keeps moisture in the soil during hot, dry summers They do need a bit of space (almost a meter), so they can expand and keep sunlight on their leaves. Pick flowers late Summer – Autumn… with a bit of luck they'll provide colour for a long time! Insects and fugal problems can be a pain in the in bum: Powdery mildew (a real autumn fungus on the leaves) can be slowed down by spraying copper sprays on the leaves when nights are getting cooler and dew settles on the leaves. Copper stops the fungal spores from starting their dastardly journey Katydids often go undetected as they emerge later in afternoon and evening, making a ZZdits sound; they chew the flowers petals making the symmetrical look slightly less symmetrical Earwigs hide inside the flower heads and chew whole petals, shredding the flowers and creating a very grumpy Julie; Mind you, those earwigs do a fabulous job in all other months of the year by being predators of aphids and such real plant pests!!! Warning - listen to this episode at your own risk! If you aren't careful, you may find yourself out a few hundred dollars. Why? Today we're talking field guides, you know, the books and apps that help you identify, find and learn about all kinds of amazing creatures. There are so many amazing field guides out there - artistic, informative, innovative, and in some cases maybe even slightly irreverent. And with deep and diverse nature interests my guests are perfect for the topic.Joining me are Allen Fish, who works at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy as Director of the Raptor Observatory and as Associate Director of community science, and Cricket Raspett of the California Academy of Sciences. You might recognize Cricket from last year's surprise hit episode on Dockfouling - or the art of finding unique marine creatures on floating docks. We start with a lively discussion of our first field guides, which transitions into a short dissection of the nomenclature of field guides, identification guides, and natural history guides. We decided they'd all be on the table for this discussion! We started with bird field guides, but transition into all sorts of other interesting guides - everything from bumblebees to fungi to plant galls to lichen to desert holes! We also discuss apps and other technology that can assist, or dare I say, replace physical field guides. That's just the start! We didn't have time to cover everything in our stacks of favorites, so follow my blog or @naturesarchive, and I'll profile a few additional guides. Cicadas are on the wane towards the end of March – I still haven't found the egg-laying site containing “Jack”s offspring ;-)But Black field crickets (Teleogryllus commodus) are still making a heck of a noise in the late afternoon/evening, especially in the North Island and top of the SouthTeleogryllus commodus (Supplied)You won't see them often, as they hide in cracks in the soil during the day; when the sun goes down the crickets will come to the surface to eat grasses – they can do a lot of damage to pasture and lawns, leaving bare soil around their home cracks.Black field crickets make their characteristic noise by rubbing their wings together. (Mating calls!)Control is quite hard – In the old days, Farmers used wheat, soaked in Maldison, strewn over the paddock, in early summer (January is the month before crickets become adults and hence, reproduce!).For a lawn it might be a nice idea to pour water with a good dash of dish-washing liquid down the holes of these insects in the middle of the day; The crickets emerge in the non-day sun (because the soapy water stings their eyes, I reckon) and the sun will heat the black bodies up real quick (Natue's Micro-wave oven!)Another “singer” in autumn is the Katydid (Caedicia simplex); mostly afternoon and early eveningIt creates a rather unique noise by rubbing the edges of its stiff forewings together, like a fingernail on a comb. The noise has the quality produced by a ventriloquist – the insect “throws its voice” so you can never be sure where it is calling from.Katydids feed on garden plants, especially flowers and they truly seem to like the roses and Dahlias that flower in autumn! They are well-camouflaged on green plants, so birds, frogs and lizards can find it tricky to locate them. After dark it's the time for tree weta to start up their communications; A soft rasping noise that is repeated frequently by rubbing the impressive hind legs onto a raised “file” situated on the abdominal segments.Tree weta (Supplied)It is their way of keeping in touch with partners and flatmates while feeding at night. But sometimes they also make that noise when they feel threatened or disturbed: they raise their legs and warn you to “back off!!”The irony is, of course, we don't really know anything about the “language” and communication capabilities of these weta… They've been around for 180 million years or so, making them one of our oldest critters in Aotearoa.LISTEN ABOVE

If you listen carefully to the insect sounds as night falls, you can easily determine that we are in the final phase of summer. It seems like the bugs are louder and more active. Perhaps they "know" that their time is short. Another telltale sound of late summer is the emergence of the Katydid. By the end of today's program, you will know what Katydids sound like and what to listen for in the late summer. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/andrebernier/support

Laurel Symes is a biologist who uses bioacoustics to study tropical katydids in Central America, and she joins us to play some of her hypnotic rainforest recordings and say how tracking these insects' interesting sounds can aid rainforest conservation. Based on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica, she uses machine learning to detect and identify these creatures, which are grasshopper-like insects that are important to the rainforest food web, because they eat a lot of plants and are in turn eaten by a lot of other species, including birds, bats, monkeys, frogs, and more. “No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under the conditions of absolute reality; even Larks and Katydids are supposed by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone. “ So opens Shirley Jacksons monumental work The Haunting of Hill House, a phantasmic look into the horrors that lurk both within the stone and wood of ancient habitation, as well as those that lurk within our own mind. In it, the house becomes a metaphor for the main protagonist’s life. Trapped by circumstance, the house represents to Eleanor both an escape from her tragic life, as well as a trap from which she is unwilling to be released. We are left wondering by books end, is what she see’s there all a part of her imagination? Or does something truly terrible haunt the corridors of Hill House. In perhaps the only good ending for a horror story, the reader is left to decide. Ghost Ghosts haunted house Devilrypodcast Devilrypod Devilrypodcast.com

Today we’re chatting with TWO extraordinary women who took the advice we’ve all heard, “Create your own content,” to the extreme and landed themselves with Series Regular, Writing, and Producing roles on their own comedy show on TV Land. These ladies began performing together in sketch groups in Chicago, where they created their own short-form webseries that ultimately lead them to Los Angeles, where they sold their show TEACHERS to TV Land. 50 episodes later, and they’re here to share what they’ve learned about acting, producing, auditioning, and being a boss! Katie O'Brien hails from Omaha, Nebraska, but is now an actress and comedienne living and working in Los Angeles. Katie has appeared in Nora Ephron's, Love, Lost and What I Wore, Key and Peele, and is currently one of the creators, writers, executive producers and stars in TV Land's hit, underground comedy, Teachers. Katie has also appeared on the Today Show, Comedy Central's @ Midnight and Kocktails with Khloe. Katy Colloton is one of the creators, executive producers, writers and actors on the TV Land show Teachers. This year she has developed TV for NBC Universal and a feature with Bluegrass Films and Scott Stuber. Katy received her B.A. in theater and psychology from Vanderbilt University. Before moving to LA, Katy performed comedy in Chicago at Second City, iO, and The Annoyance Theater. IG: @thatoneaudtion

Join James Lott Junior as he returns to AfterBuzz TV to interview Katie O’Brien, Katy Colloton, and Caitlin Barlow of TV Land's Teachers! Elementary school teachers serve a critical role in society, as they help shape the minds of America's kids. That presents a problem, however, when the educators who are trying to mold the country's youth don't have their own lives in order. Whether it's Ms. Snap hooking up with the school's janitor or Ms. Bennigan flirting with the resident "hot dad," the ladies teaching the youngsters on this comedy series are far from being the role models that parents would like teachers to be. "Teachers" is written by and stars the Katydids, a troupe of six performers who all have a name that is a version of Katie. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Today’s guest on ADD Comedy with Dave Razowsky is Kate Lambert. Kate is from the Second City which is where I first met her. In Chicago she worked with a cast of women whose names were all variations of Catherine, so they became The Katydids. They got themselves a nice following, and eventually they all found their way out west, where they created the opportunity for themselves to produce Teachers for TV Land. Kate is positive, focused, smart, and funny. In other words, another perfect guest for the podcast. Enjoy.
New "Kahnversations" Podcast with Actor/Writer/Producer Katy Colloton! In this episode of "Kahnversations," we interview Katy Colloton. Katy stars as the narcissistic Ms. Chelsea Snap on TV Land's hit comedy series, TEACHERS. Katy. along with "The Katydids," writes, acts and executive produces TEACHERS alongside Alison Brie (COMMUNITY) and showrunners Ian Roberts and Jay Martel (KEY AND PEELE). Katy received her B.A. in Theater and Psychology from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. After college, she moved to Chicago, where she performed improv and sketch with the Second City House Ensemble, iO Chicago, The Playground Theater and The Annoyance Theatre. She was selected to perform her solo material at Just For Laughs Chicago, appeared in the award-winning Vimeo series, BREAK-UPS, and TimeOut Chicago called her the "breakout" performer at the 2013 Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival. Additionally Katy has developed TV for NBC Universal and a feature with Bluegrass Films and Scott Stuber. You can download or subscribe to the podcast for FREE by clicking below. If you like “Kahnversations,” please leave a rating or review on our iTunes page! There are so many inspiring podcasts with fabulous stars out there. But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.

Peabody and Emmy Award winner Jay Martel joins us in Booth One via Skype all the way from Hollywood! It's our first long-distance interview show and the technology involved has Gary and Roscoe a bit daunted, so we've brought in our audio guru John Lisiecki to run sound for us today. Great to have John back in the studio! Jay won an Emmy this year as Executive Producer on the brilliant sketch comedy show Key & Peele, now available in full episodes at Comedy Central. One of their recurring sketches became so iconic that Luther, Barack Obama's "Anger Translator" appeared with the president at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Jay and producing partner Ian Roberts, a co-founder of the Upright Citizens Brigade, were the show runners (Jay tells us what that entails) for Key & Peele and are now show runners for the TV Land program Teachers - featuring the actresses who performed here in Chicago as the improv group, The Katydids. Jay is also a successful playwright, essayist (The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, etc.) and novelist. His first novel, Channel Blue, is about an intergalactic alien conglomerate called Galaxy Entertainment that for decades has used the Earth as the basis of a reality TV show for billions of planetary viewers. But the viewership has become bored with our "earthle" behavior and the producing corporation of Channel Blue decides to "cancel" Earth in a spectacular series-ending finale. Only one person can prevent this disaster - out-of-work screenwriter and manic depressive Perry Bunt. And this is just the first 40 pages!! A terrific read and a very funny book. We detour into a few animal stories and talk about Shirley and Jenny, 2 former circus elephants who have an emotional reunion after 22 years when they end up at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Watch the touching video here. Next we discuss the 100-year-old giant tortoise Diego, who single-handedly saved his species from extinction by fathering 800 babies in the past 50 years on the Galapagos Island of Espanola. Conservationists credit Diego's success with the ladies to his handsome, grizzled appearance. You be the judge. Finally, an air passenger boarded a flight recently with her "emotional support animal" - a duck wearing red shoes and a Captain America diaper. Gary, Roscoe and Jay discuss the merits and ethical implications of the emotional support animal craze - real or ruse? Gary and Roscoe are treated to Booth One experiences by being invited into the limousines of Tony and Tina on the way to their "wedding". Roscoe gets the bridal party while Gary travels with the groomsmen as they head to the church on time. Afterwards, we attend the ceremony and reception right here in Chicago. It's a delightful affair, full of humor and outrageous behavior. Do yourself a favor and book your table today for Tony n' Tina's Wedding! It's not every day that you hear a great Richard Nixon story, but Jay's got one and it involves rhododendrons and the King of Morocco. And he relates a remarkable anecdote about confronting Jeb Bush about the Florida death penalty while working as an on-air correspondent for Michael Moore's TV Nation. Kiss of Death: Phil Chess - Chess Records Boss who spread the Blues A Polish Jewish immigrant who grew up in Chicago, Phil Chess introduced the world to African-American blues, R&B, and Rock 'n Roll. With his brother Leonard, they founded Chess Records and throughout the 1950's and early '60's, released a string of hits, including Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," Etta James' "At Last," and Bo Didley's "Who Do You Love." Their second release was Muddy Waters' "Rollin' Stone." Twelve years later in London, Mick Jagger and his friends would name their new band after that record. "The story of the blues is to tell your feelings," he said. "The blues is what comes from the heart." Phil Chess was 95. Read NYT obit here.
