After a month's break, FHSMUN Radio is back with new programming starting with the Organization of American States! As societies and governments continue to reflect the needs of their citizens more, so too can the manner in which elections are held and public security is conducted change. As delegates grapple with the questions, and problems, posed by these OAS topics, it's important for delegates to continue asking, "what does a representative, more just society look like?"
The Rakhine State and the Syrian Refugee Crisis are among the most daunting challenges posed to the UNHCR today. While both topics possess critical security aspects, delegates are challenged to address the humanitarian needs present in these topics.
Merin Thomas, FHSMUN's Undersecretary-General and student of the Dr. Kiran C Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, joins FHSMUN Radio for an in-depth discussion about the challenges facing the World Health Organization during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also discusses the ways in which Member States must continue multilateral action to prevent the spread of COVID-19, other communicable diseases, and the medical science behind many of these diseases. Remember to wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds, maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet, cover your mouth and nose with a mask when around others, disinfect commonly touched services, cover your mouth and nose when you cough and/or sneeze, and monitor your physical and mental health daily.
The United Nations recognizes the deleterious legacy of colonization in our world. And so, to grapple with this legacy and the unique challenges posed in these situations, FHSMUN will be welcoming the African Union Peace & Security Council as a committee for FHSMUN 42.
No two topics engage the broad mandate of the Security Council quite like Yemen and Colombia. Yemen is an ongoing humanitarian, security, and public health emergency; Colombia is a prescient example of ongoing peacebuilding initiatives undertaken by the United Nations system.
Every year the Director of Academics works closely with the Executive Director and the Secretary-General to develop a comprehensive conference theme.
