From Brain Drain to Brain Gain: How Michigan and Metro Detroit is Making Progress (ft. Hilary Doe)

Daily Detroit

Today on your Daily Detroit, a conversation about what happens when a state starts pushing back on one of its greatest challenges? After decades of decline, Michigan is seeing some positive population growth — particularly among young adults. My guest is Hillary Doe, Chief Growth Officer for the state of Michigan. Now, "Chief Growth Officer" might sound like pure bureaucratic jargon, but in this case, it represents a real shift.  It's a story of targeted investments, a focus on community building, and an understanding that attracting people is about creating a place where people want to be. It's also a check in from a year ago, when we last talked to Hilary about the progress and the work to do. How do you reverse a brain drain? What does it take to make a state a place people choose? And can a state really change its narrative? There's still a lot of work to do, but it looks like Michigan and Detroit is starting to make some progress. Extraordinary Creatives

Play Episode Listen Later May 21, 2025 6:59

This week's shorty is about one simple but powerful shift: getting clear on your goals, what you really want, and how to start getting there. Not just in theory, but in practice, with examples from artists who've done it inside The Artist's Mastermind Circle. There is a difference between working and progressing. You can be busy every day, posting, planning, painting, and still feel like nothing's actually moving. If that sounds familiar to you, this episode is definitely going to help you to break free. The Artist Mastermind Circle: Ready to stop second-guessing and start building momentum in your art career? Applications are now open for the next Artist Mastermind Circle—a six-month coaching programme for mid-career artists who are serious about growing their confidence, income, and opportunities.Apply by 21 July at https://cerihand.com/artist-mastermind-circle/ and take the next bold step. KEY TAKEAWAYS Getting clear on your goals is essential. Set 3 big goals in 3 different areas of your work, e.g. creative, financial, relationships and visibility. When you define your goals out loud, momentum starts to build. Creative goals don't have to be tied to external validation. Goals need to stretch you enough to energise you. Set a financial goal that you can actually measure. Working out the steps you need to take to achieve each goal, prevents overwhelm and provides you with a full road map to follow. BEST MOMENTS “These (goals) aren't vague hopes. They're specific, time-bound and slightly scary.” “Name a creative goal that actually motivates you.” “Write down a number, then ask, ‘Where could that income realistically come from without overextending myself or compromising my values?’” “Apply now, and within six months, you won't just feel clearer, you will be moving ahead.” PODCAST HOST BIO With over 30 years in the art world, Ceri has worked closely with leading artists and arts professionals, managed public and private galleries and charities, and curated more than 250 exhibitions and events. Legendary Labor policymaker Jenny Macklin spent 11 years in Opposition before the six years she spent on the frontbench of the Rudd/Gillard Government. She knows that the long setup is well and truly worth it, as long as you're ready to make the most of your time in power, knowing it's fleeting. In Jenny's case, she was instrumental in delivering Australia first national paid parental leave scheme, the NDIS and the National Apology, among other things. Jenny joins the podcast for a conversation on how politicians can achieve great policymaking, just in time for the 48th Parliament of Australia featuring more women than ever in prominent leadership positions. But the lessons are for more than just policymakers; they're relevant to anyone keen to create change, in whatever field of work they do. Jenny left parliament in 2019 and has now just published a book: Making Progress, How good policy happens. It's described as a part policy memoir, part war room drama and part field guide – a political book with a message, and a method. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Sporting KC traveled to TQL stadium on Saturday and unfortunately were unable to come away with a result as Kevin Denkey scored two goals, one being an immediate goal of the year candidate meaning Zorhan Bassong's first professional goal went wanting and Sporting KC took a 2-1 defeat.Kerry Zavagnin made some interesting tactical choices in this game, leaving FCC to attempt to dictate play much of the first half and limiting space for them to play into, before opening the game up a bit after halftime as the team started chasing goals.  Either way, the execution of the plan in both halves was actually pretty competent, the scoreline notwithstanding. While the team did eliminate the big mistakes that have been a hallmark of this season, there were still plenty of areas for improvement, that said, they often appeared more to be limitations of the players themselves, rather than something coachable that can significantly improve over time.  We'll talk a bit about the project SKC has in front of them still from a roster building perspective, as well as the influence recruiting has on their ability to sign the players that can have the impact they need. Finally, we will preview SKC's return home for Sunday Night Soccer at Children's Mercy Park vs. the LA Galaxy.  It seems quite appropriate that the Galaxy are coming to town on Star Wars Day.

Ryan Singer is one of the earliest employees and the former Head of Strategy at 37signals (the makers of Basecamp), where he spent nearly two decades refining a product development approach that helped the company build super-successful products with small teams. Based on these lessons, he wrote "Shape Up: Stop Running in Circles and Ship Work that Matters," and Ryan now works with companies of all sizes to them them escape the cycle of endless sprints, missed deadlines, and dragging projects. What you'll learn:1. Why traditional Agile and Scrum methods often lead teams into endless cycles of work without meaningful shipping milestones.2. The “appetite-driven” approach to product development where teams set fixed timeboxes (usually six weeks maximum) and vary the scope instead of expanding timelines.3. The exact process for running effective “shaping” sessions that collaboratively define projects before committing resources.4. Why most teams struggle with too little detail in their planning, not too much.5. Why a 30-to-50-person team size is the critical breaking point when growing startups need to adopt more structured processes.6. Practical techniques for bridging the engineering-design divide by bringing technical and product perspectives together earlier in the process.7. The powerful “breadboarding” and “fat marker sketching” techniques that help teams align on solutions without getting lost in high-fidelity details.8. The clear warning signs that your current development process is failing before it's too late to change course.9. Proven strategies to implement Shape Up methods, whether you're working in a startup or enterprise environment.10. A step-by-step approach to transitioning from Scrum to Shape Up by piloting the methodology with a single team before broader implementation.11. Why the PM role shifts upstream in Shape Up, focusing more on problem definition than project management.12. Practicing Harp Happiness

The day this podcast episode is released, we will be living Day 55 of this year 2025. According to the calendar, we've already had 55 days this year to get things done, to grow, to accomplish. We've had 55 days to play the harp. If you set goals at the beginning of the year, this is a good time to check in on them. Are you where you thought you'd be? Are you ahead of the game, checking things off your list and moving on to your next steps? If you are, here's a huge high five from me. That's the way to create harp happiness. Today we are going to revisit your goals. We'll look at how far you've come, confirm your direction and realign your course if necessary. We will focus on the progress you've been making and where your next steps may be. But if you haven't seen the progress you had hoped for or expected, no worries. Progress is tricky to measure and sometimes hard to spot, even when it's happening. When you're walking the path, you can't always tell how far you've come or how far you still have to go, and that can be unsettling or even frustrating.  We're talking today about how to create progress and, more importantly, how to measure it. I'll share the three things I think are absolutely necessary for you to make progress, and I'll give you some ideas for progress markers you can use to make sure you're moving in the right direction.  I want you to keep this in mind too: sometimes all you need is a fresh look at where you want to go and what you need to do to get there. It is often that simple. And I think that's what our time together today will help you do, find those simple next right steps to move you and your harp playing forward. Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.    This week, I have two amazing guests on the show. The first is Bob Moesta. He is a founder, maker, innovator, speaker, and professor. He is the president and founder of the Rewired Group, as well as an adjunct lecturer at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern and a research fellow at the Clayton Christensen Institute. But what I love most about him is he co-created the famous Jobs to Be Done theory, which I use in almost every keynote I have. Alongside Bob, and not to be outshined by any stretch, is Michael Horn who strives to create a world in which all individuals can build their passions, fulfill their potential, and live a life of purpose. He is the co-founder of and a distinguished fellow at the Clayton Christensen Institute, a nonprofit think tank. He also teaches at Harvard Graduate School of Education.    THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR…anyone navigating career decisions, seeking purpose, or looking for strategies to make meaningful progress in their work.   TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE…making career moves isn't just about finding the next big opportunity—it's about aligning your work with your values, energy, and aspirations. In this conversation, Bob and Michael discuss how to evaluate your current situation, identify opportunities for growth, and take steps toward a more fulfilling career.    KEY TAKEAWAYS: Align your career with what energizes and fulfills you. Evaluate your current role to identify opportunities for growth. Instead of making a person fit the work, make the work fit a person's strengths.   Thoughtful career moves start with clarity about your values and goals.   WHAT I LOVE MOST…Bob and Michael's insight that career fulfillment doesn't always mean a big leap—it can come from small, intentional changes that better align your work with your strengths and aspirations.   Running Time: 31:03   Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani Online: LinkedIn Facebook X   Find Michael Online: LinkedIn   Find Bob Online: LinkedIn   Michael and Bob's Book:  Job Moves: 9 Steps for Making Progress in Your Career   Job Moves Assessment
