Today marks two years since Sudan's brutal conflict erupted. As violence drags on, over 1.1 million refugees and returnees have poured into South Sudan, stretching already fragile host communities to the brink. A new United Nations Human Rights Council report exposes crumbling infrastructure: overcrowded schools, scarce healthcare, and land disputes over makeshift shelters. The UN Human Rights Council is calling for urgent global support to stabilize the region and offer hope for durable peace. For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to Silva Alkebeh, united nations high commissioner for refugees (UNHRC)

Netanyahu supports Trump's plan for Palestinian expulsion from Gaza "Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended US President Donald Trump's controversial proposal of Palestinian ethnic cleansing from Gaza, asking in a Fox News interview, ""What's wrong with that?"" He suggested that Gaza residents could leave, return or relocate as part of so-called rebuilding efforts. Meanwhile, Israel is officially pulling out of the UN Human Rights Council or UNHRC, aligning with Trump's move. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar declared, “Israel joins the US and will not participate in the UNHRC.”" Türkiye, Germany urge global action for two-state solution "Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier are calling for urgent global action to secure a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and revive the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Speaking in Ankara, both leaders stressed the need for diplomacy and adherence to international law. ""As the international community, we must continue our efforts for a two-state solution,"" Erdogan said. Steinmeier also slammed Donald Trump's proposal to expel Palestinians, calling it “unacceptable.”" Russia, Ukraine swap 150 prisoners of war with UAE mediation "Russia and Ukraine each returned 150 servicemen, marking another step in ongoing negotiations. Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed its troops are in Belarus for medical and psychological care before heading home. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the return of troops from various military branches, calling it “a good day.” Both nations thanked the United Arab Emirates for brokering the deal, signaling continued diplomatic efforts despite the war's relentless toll." UN reports 2,800 deaths in DRC's Goma due to escalating violence "The death toll from the fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern city of Goma has surpassed 2,800, according to the United Nations. Despite a declared ceasefire, the M23 rebel group, backed by Rwandan forces, has resumed its offensive, seizing key areas. The intense fighting has sparked international concern, with fears of a wider regional conflict. Diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate the situation. However, the renewed violence persists, with ongoing concerns about its impact on the civilian population." "A federal judge in the US has issued a nationwide injunction blocking President Trump's executive-order seeking to end birthright citizenship for children born in the country to undocumented immigrants. The judge ruled that the order violates the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to all persons born or naturalised in the United States. This is the second court to block the order, which has been met with widespread legal challenges. The Trump administration has argued that children born in the US to undocumented immigrants are not ""subject to the jurisdiction"" of the United States and therefore not entitled to citizenship."

For the four siblings and parents of 23-year-old Hamas hostage, Romi Gonen, life has been totally upended since October 7, 2023. . Her mother, Meirav Leshem Gonen, older sister Yarden and her father, Eitan, were on the phone with her for four hours that morning. From the very first moments of the Hamas attack she was in near constant contact with one of them. They heard everything. In separate podcasts in January (links are in the notes, below), I interviewed both Meirav and Eitan. They spoke in detail about those surreal hours when no one understood the scope of the attack. But their Romi was in the vortex of the unfolding Hell and thank goodness she had a charged phone so that they could support her. Until, that is, the Hamas monsters pulled her from the car where she was trapped, with a bullet in her arm. (All this is discussed in detail in the January podcasts.) Not until some hostages were released in late November did the family receive confirmation that Romi was alive. For nine months they have been among the hostage families at the forefront of efforts to ensure that the ongoing savagery of Hamas is not forgotten. They are at the United Nations, meeting with government leaders, groups and individuals visiting Israel, media, anyone and everyone who demonstrates an interest in the desperate plight of the hostages. I have met with Meirav and other family members on numerous occasions. This episode is a special focus on what their lives have become. When I was in Geneva recently on June 19 (total coincidence), I was invited to watch Meirav Leshem Gonen address the opening plenary session of the UN Human Rights Council, at which Navi Pillay, Chair of the latest Commission of Inquiry into Israel's conduct since October 7th, presented her “findings”. Not only is the Commission yet another UN farce, but the tenor of the proceedings contrasted so sharply with the dignity of Meirav. Her power saturated the large meeting hall.Join me on this fascinating journey with the Gonen family, through desperate lows, hope, determination, fury and a relentless focus on doing everything possible to free Romi and all the other hostages in Hamas hell. It is a tour de force because of who and what they are. Their determination and courage are just awesome. You will hear Meirav laugh, cry, tear a strip off the UN Human Rights Commission and more. We get into music, family, power and the responsibility of every person who cherishes freedom to step up and speak up. This is the story of what was probably a quite ordinary family that has come to embody devotion, strength, decency, dignity and ferocious love. They are anything but ordinary. And we discuss that too - how circumstances have thrown them into this insane life situation and how they have risen to the challenge, together.Podcast Notes:Remarks of Ms. Navi Pillay at UNHRC, June 19, 2024:Remarks of Meirav Leshem Gonen at UNHRC, June 19, 2024:Link to UNHRC proceedings on June 19, 2024Eden Golan “Hurricane” video on YoutubeState of Tel Aviv is a reader-supported publication. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Joanna Wuest, assistant professor of politics at Mount Holyoke College and author of the book Born This Way: Science, Citizenship, and Inequality in the American LGBTQ+ Movement, to discuss her recent piece in Jacobin entitled "The Best Way to Secure LGBTQ Rights: Unions." Then, she speaks with David Broder, historian and Europe editor at Jacobin, author of Mussolini's Grandchildren: Fascism in Contemporary Italy, to discuss the recent EU elections, and the upcoming elections in the UK and France. First, Emma runs through updates on stalling ceasefire talks, Israel's continuing aggression in Gaza and elsewhere, some surprisingly solid SCOTUS decisions, Congressional action, RFK's floundering candidacy, serious global warming, growing union support in the US, and Louisiana's Ten Commandments-Commandment for school classrooms, also parsing through the recent UNHRC report on the crimes of war, crimes against humanity, and crimes of extermination, gender and sexual-based violence, and use of starvation and collective punishment. Professor Joanna Wuest then joins, diving right into the inspiring queer advocacy work coming from the new generation of union leaders, before stepping back to tackle the (multi-decades) long standing relationship between labor and queer rights, with unions providing much stronger protections from discrimination and important economic security where the US government failed to do so. After touching on the deep history of the relationship between anti-LGBTQ scapegoating of educators, and where Ron DeSantis' “Don't Say Gay” policy stands within that context, Professor Wuest and Emma wrap up with the important role queer folks have played in the major Starbucks unionization push over the last few years. David Broder then walks Emma through what the EU Parliament actually is and does (not much), and contextualizes the broader results of the recent round of elections, before parsing through the more worrying results out of France and Germany, which saw strong gains from the far-right RN (of Marine Le Pen) and AfD. Expanding on the France of it all, Broder tackles French PM Macron's absurd decision to respond to the right-wing gains by calling a snap national election, what it tells us about liberals' continued preference of the far-right over the progressive left, and what it could mean for the future of Le Pen's party, using Italy's Giorgia Meloni as a parallel to Le Pen's seeming liberal-appeasing-pivot to more conventional, pro-establishment politics. After discussing the more radical brand of fascism coming out of Germany's AfD, Emma and Broder wrap up with a brief assessment of the state of the left in Europe, and the ongoing failure of the retreat to the center (as seen in the UK). And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they admire some timely crowd work, watch Tim Pool complaint about Nick Fuentes tainting white nationalism with his anti-Israel views, and listen to Glenn Greenwald and Tucker Carlson pretend to be the first people ever to point out the absurdity of anti-BDS laws. The UN Human Rights Council will today elect its new President from two competing African States - Morocco and South Africa. Moroccan Ambassador Omar Zniber and South African Ambassador Mxolisi Nkosi have been nominated for the position of President of the Council. The candidate with the most votes will occupy the year-long term to manage proceedings of the United Nations' premier human rights body. For more on this, Elvis Presslin spoke to Professor Chris Landsberg, Director of the Centre for African Diplomacy and Leadership at the University of Johannesburg

Today opens with a short history and timeline of the State of Israel. I realized, over the weekend, the only reason so much pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli sentiment exists is from a dreadful lack of basic facts and information. I cram a lot in the first half of the show, but I suggest sharing it with those who use any of the following propagandized and factually incorrect talking points: • The land of Israel was historically Muslim land • Israel is responsible for how the land has been divided among inhabitants • Israel colonized Arab lands and expelled all of the Arabs • Israel is an apartheid state I then play a soundbite of a Palestinian woman who lives freely in Canada. It is now easy to see why so much propaganda leads people to cheer for Hamas as if they are the resistance. Eyal Waldman is an Israeli billionaire, high-tech magnate and founder of Mellanox. He built R&D centers in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to employ Palestinian developers in order to build better Israeli-Palestinian relations. Hamas murdered his daughter, Danielle, at the music festival. On a separate note, a Wisconsin couple who lived Kfar Aza were pro-Palestinian supporters and were against Israeli policies in the Gaza. Turns out, when Hamas stormed their home, they didn't ask them about their pro-Palestinian philosophy. They killed them all the same. At a UNHRC meeting, a former member of Hamas, Mosab Hassan Yousef, addressed his former group and called them out for the terrorists they are. If you doubt me or anyone else, why would you doubt someone who was once a member of that terror organization. Closer to home, a record 49% of Americans say high prices are eroding their standards of living. The world is in such chaos because our President is inept at everything he does, thinks and believes. Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) put out a blistering op-ed in the NY Post over the weekend. The title of the piece pretty much says it all: Democratic socialists are “indoctrinating” young Americans with anti-Israel hate in “moral monstrosity.” On a positive note, it seems Pfizer had to revise it's forecast down for lack of people wanted to use their anti-Covid drugs. It seems only 2% of Americans have even taken the “fall” Covid shot. And praise for Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) who, along with his team, has now rescued 96 Americans from Israel, 77 of which he rescued himself. While our White House is a joke on a the world stage, we have a law-maker who remembers what the role of government is supposed to be. On this episode I talk with Alice Bosley, Co-founder and CEO of Five One Labs. She and her cofounder met in grad school at Columbia and decided to create a startup focused on solving a really big problem - getting refugee populations back up on their feet. The UNHRC estimates the number of people in the world who have been forcibly displaced is now almost 110 million - the highest in history. I think you'll enjoy this conversation with Alice about how her organization is tackling this problem, and what she's learned in her six year journey as a social entrepreneur. I met her originally through my work with Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship.

SYNOPSIS:Blasphemy is any offense to religious sentiments. Globally, 79 countries have laws penalising blasphemy, ranging from secular states (like Canada, Finland, and Germany) to countries with a state religion (like Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia). In secular democratic countries, while these laws protect the rights of minority religious communities and attempt to preserve social harmony, they are heavily criticised on the grounds of being unconstitutional and obtrusive to the right to freedom of speech. Critics also believe that these laws are counterproductive and instead push society to be more intolerant of alternative ideas and belief systems, making the very foundations of religious and moral beliefs more fragile and insecure. Religious reform and social change against draconian religious practices could only be possible because of staunch criticism. Poets, philosophers, authors and even scientists and discoverers who have been persecuted in the past on grounds of blasphemy enjoy popular credibility today for their contributions.Merits of religious criticism do not however disregard the potential risk to social harmony and possible validation of hostile behavior veiled under the garb of critique. What makes matters more complicated is the active rise in interreligious and inter-sect hatred and access to platforms to express opinions publicly that could potentially be provocative, aggressive, and hurtful to the sentiments of members of certain groups. The Indian constitution in its Article 19(2) provides for “reasonable restrictions” on the freedom of speech to precisely avoid and curb such intentioned violence. Article 295A punishes “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs”. Though India does not have explicit Blasphemy Laws, critics believe that free speech and radical thought is repeatedly impeded in India by invoking these two provisions in the constitution, making it a covert Blasphemy Law. Incarceration of religious minorities and instances of mob violence, lynching and vigilante justice surface up repeatedly in the name of religious blasphemy.International organizations like the UNHRC and ICCPR have repeatedly questioned the degree to which blasphemy laws are compliant with fundamental human rights. How should then countries navigate between blasphemy, heresy, and hate speech? Is it justified to trade some part of individual freedom for an attempt at social peace? Does criminalisation of religious criticism protect the faith-holders or does it further create instability in the society? Should Blasphemy be punished?
