Tackling Global Healthcare Inequality: Helpster Uses Technology to Save Vulnerable Lives in Africa and Asia

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2025 4:06

In a world where healthcare remains a luxury for many, Helpster Charity US Inc., an international nonprofit organisation, is turning the tide on healthcare inequality. Founded in 2023, the tech charity is harnessing cutting-edge technology to provide life-saving treatments to children, pregnant women, and young adults in some of the most underserved regions of Africa and Asia. With over 900 lives saved so far, Helpster's innovative platform directly connects vulnerable individuals with global donors willing to fund their healthcare needs. The organisation's transparent, efficient approach allows those in urgent need of medical treatment to be sponsored by individuals from anywhere in the world. Africa and Asia have some of the highest rates of child mortality, primarily due to lack of access to essential healthcare. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 5 million children under the age of five die each year from preventable causes, with sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia accounting for nearly 80% of these deaths. Limited healthcare infrastructure, compounded by economic inequality, means that many children never get the medical attention they need in time. Helpster is actively fighting this injustice. Through its app and website, donors can choose specific cases or allow the platform's automated system to direct funds to the most urgent needs. For as little as $200 per child, Helpster has already begun to reduce child mortality and alleviate the suffering of those without the means to afford necessary treatments. Kate Lysykh, the CEO of Helpster, explains that the organization was built out of a desire to tackle the systemic barriers that prevent children from accessing healthcare in impoverished regions. "Where a child is born should never determine whether they live or die," Lysykh says. "We created Helpster to find those in critical need and connect them with the people who can save their lives, no matter where they are. Our goal is not just to provide temporary relief but to build a scalable system that can eventually save thousands of lives every month." While Helpster acknowledges that it cannot reach every child in need at this time, the platform has proven to be a powerful force for change. With over 1,000 cases reviewed, the average treatment cost stands at just $200, highlighting the stark contrast between the cost of treatment and the inability of families to afford even the most basic care. "Every child has the right to survive, no matter where they are born," Lysykh adds. "We're encouraging individuals everywhere to become heroes by donating through our platform. Every cent donated directly funds the treatment of a verified case, while a small percentage covers payment processing and currency exchange fees." In regions like sub-Saharan Africa, where the child mortality rate remains staggeringly high - at 76 deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to the global average of 38 - Helpster's efforts are a critical lifeline. Similarly, in South Asia, where healthcare access remains scarce, over 300 million people live without basic health services, and nearly 100 million children are at risk due to inadequate nutrition and medical attention. Through its growing donor network, Helpster is tackling these disparities head-on, offering hope for a better future. With global health crises exacerbating existing inequalities, the need for organisations like Helpster has never been more urgent. Helpster's approach offers a scalable model for tackling healthcare inequality - one that not only delivers immediate relief but also provides the foundation for long-term systemic change. By offering an easy, transparent way for individuals to make a tangible difference, Helpster is setting a new standard in the fight for healthcare equity. A podcast with Nikita Kuzmin the founder of Helpster will be up soon on Irish Tech News and all major podcast platforms. See more stories here.
