In this episode, Dina sits down with long-time friend, Lina AbiRafeh to unpack what led her to pursue a career in women's rights and speaking up against violence against women. In all honesty, when Dina met Lina over 20 years ago, she embodied disruption and being your own blueprint. Sitting across from Lina in London over coffee while she was pursuing her PhD, Dina looked up to Lina in so many ways - mostly for her brazen, tell it like it is way - that is just purely infectious. In a word, Lina is committed to building a better world for women. She is a global women's rights expert and gender equality advocate with decades of experience worldwide. An activist, academic, and an aid worker with a 25-year track record in creating positive change for women in over 20 countries around the world - Afghanistan, Haiti, Central African Republic, Papua New Guinea, and more - Lina speaks and publishes frequently on a range of women's issues – on global stages and in the international media. Lina is a force to be reckoned with. She is someone who is integral to the very thinking and action in the field of woman's rights. Not only will she tell it like it is, she'll give you a healthy dose of wit. And if you're fortunate to be invited to her home, she'll put out a huge spread. A feisty disrupter herself, Lina shows us in the episode what disruption has looked like over the course of a career spanning over two decades and what disruption looks like now. She has the unique ability to pull together the right people, in the right place and time to make phenomenal change happen. Violence against women is on the news everyday. It's happening in the workplace, on the streets and in people's home. Ending this violence starts with men, their behaviours and attitudes. And changing the social structures and norms which enable domestic violence and harassment starts with a conversation. Unfortunately, discussing gender equality is not always a top priority in pubs, locker rooms and Parliament House. But if men are willing to listen and reflect on their behaviour, we could see real societal transformation, so how do we encourage men to put women on the agenda? Joyce Wu's research has taken her across the globe, and her insights could make a real difference. A UNSW Centre for Ideas project, with podcast editing and music composition by Bryce Halliday. https://president.ie/en/diary/details/president-hosts-reception-to-mark-international-womens-day/speeches The President and Sabina Higgins hosted a special event at Áras an Uachtaráin, bringing together a wide range of organisations to consider together what contribution they can make as a group to strengthening gender equality. Amongst those attending were unions and employers, public sector bodies, sporting organisations, cultural bodies, educational institutions and student representatives, women's groups, human rights advocates and other organisations directly supporting women. Noeline Blackwell, CEO of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, acted as moderator for the event, which was initially due to take place on International Women's Day but had to be postponed as a result of the President and Sabina's positive tests for COVID-19 earlier that week. The event, initially announced by President Higgins on St Brigid's Day, is one of a number of actions which the President has taken since his appointment as a United Nations HeForShe Champion in 2015, in support of UN Sustainable Development Goal number 5 - to end gender-based violence. The attendees held discussions about what actions their organisations might be able to take to progress greater gender equality in society. As part of this consultative process, Noeline Blackwell asked the audience to reflect on the discussions of the day and to send back their thoughts on the issues raised.

Over forty years ago, in partnerships with the Oakland Men's Project, author and activist Paul Kivel conceptualized "the act like a man box" putting into motion a central frame for the healthy masculinity movement. In this interview, Kivel talks about his history in men's work and his regrets about what remains to be done. Namely, collective action and a broader response to all forms of oppression. Paul Kivel is a powerful moral voice and a founding father of the healthy masculinity movement. Reach out to Paul and find his books at PaulKivel.com. *** Join us for powerful conversations with the men and women leading the healthy masculinity movement. For generations, our culture has taught us a narrow and limiting set of rules for how to be a man. The end result? Epidemic levels of isolation and violence for boys and men and for the multitude of others who's lives we impact. But we can make a difference choice. We can choose a masculinity of connection and in return have healthier relationships, and more meaningful, lasting lives. As a writer, speaker and consultant, Mark Greene has spent over a decade deconstructing our binary-riddled dialogues around manhood and masculinity. Former Member of Parliament, Joy Smith says if family members and friends don't discuss this problem, they could also become victims. Smith has been fighting to end human trafficking for over 25 years. She first became aware of human trafficking from her police officer son, Edward, who was working in the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit (ICE). Over the years she has helped many young victims who have been exploited or trafficked by their abusers. She says the average age of a girl entering the sex trade, or being trafficked is between 12-14 years old. She says 93 percent of those trafficked are born and bred right here in Canada. Most recently, Smith has released a new Bible study called The Christian Response to Human Trafficking in Canada. The 6-part video series features first-hand interviews with Canadian researchers, survivors, reformed traffickers, former buyers, and community leaders who address how human trafficking happens and what can be done to stop it.
