Tim Brewster, the former tight ends coach under Jimbo Fisher and the recruiter credited with bringing big names like Dalvin Cook and Marvin Wilson to FSU, hinted that he might be headed back to Tallahassee. The rumor mill has been spinning with talk that Brewster, who most recently coached and Florida under Dan Mullen, may replace Kenyatta Watson, Sr. as Director of High School Relations.  Max and Drake discuss their differing opinions on this potential hire. Drake rightly points to Brewster's resume as a recruiter. However, Max is worried that the same guy that lit up the trail for the Noles from 2013-2017 might not be who you get with this hire. What do you all think about Tim Brewster coming back in front office role? Additionally, Drake gives an update on Winston Wright, JR's reported recovery. There's a very select few who can truly call themselves alumni of Florida State Football. There are even fewer who can say they added to the legacy and mystique of DBU. Today, we are joined by none other than former FSU great and current CBS Sports Analyst Bryant McFadden here on Locked On Seminoles today for you the fans. Bryant McFadden played at Florida State from 2001-2004 before embarking on a multi-year career in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals winning two Super Bowls during his 7-year career. In the same breath, he explains why he made the decision to spurn the University of Coral Gables hometown Hurricanes as he grew up right in there backyard. He then talks about what is the Media's perception of FSU, where he sees the program now and wraps up today's show with a little personal Q&A when it comes to former teammates and a little good old fashioned hate for the 2 other Big 3 Florida schools.  As always, we here at Locked On Seminoles want to thank you for making Locked On Seminoles your first listen each and every single day. "Pac-12 After Dark": Would Florida Sate Leave the ACC, FSU's Permanent Pod Opponents & Scholarship Limits & Transfer Help

Florida Sate fans have long clamored to see what would an exit from the Atlantic Coast Conference would mean for FSU. Well, the Double Ds of Dave & Drake here at Locked On Seminoles are here to give you what their thoughts are on the topic and more.  First up, the fellas discuss their thoughts on divisionless football. Earlier this week Max & Drake gave their thoughts on the effects of divisionless football and how it would've impacted seasons past and also the implications. Now Dave enters the chat and we go a little more micro on the show. Who would each of our two hosts today keep as the permanent opponents? Does Clemson make the cut for both our hosts troday? Why keeping UM in there is so important? Who out of the rest of the AC is the 3rd? Next, the boys discuss a fun little hypothetical. Seeing as the Big Ten and the SEC are inking new TV deals and the revenues of each that are leaking showcase around $100 million, we play the fun hypothetical of moving FSU to a different conference. So we asked each other; 1. What conference would you WANT to see Florida State football compete in; and 2. What conference do you think Mike Norvell and company need to go to in orde to be successful? Does the Pac-12 get some love? Is the big bad SEC as surefire of an answer as we want it to be and Is the Big 12 even a thing anymore?  To wrap up today's show, the gang talks another NCAA potential ruling. The NCAA is toying around with the idea of not only increasing the incoming amount of kids for each class but eliminating the yearly scholarship cap overall. What does increasing form 25 to 32 do for teams like FSU? Do the rich simply get richer? Will this lead to eventually removal of these limits.  As always, thanks for making locked on Seminoles your first listen each and every single day and with all that we hope you enjoy the show.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! "Boosters Beware": NCAA Going after Boosters, Should FSU Collectives Worry & Is UM Football a target for Sanctions

The NCAA finally is showing its teeth it appears when it comes to establishing some order in today's Wild, Wild West of modern College Football. The fellas here at Locked ON Seminoles have a little something top say about all that in todays episode of your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast.  The dynamic duo of Drake and Max look over the new guidelines that were dropped today by the NMCAA committee regarding NIL and the collectives around. The two hold a people's court and discuss how each of them feels in the matter. Should Florida State fans be worried that these rules and the limitations placed on NIL collectives will hold them further behind the 8-ball of the larger and more funded schools? Should boosters affiliated with these Collectives worry about their relationship putting these schools at risk? Later on, the two ask themselves also how this affects the loudest players in the NIL space. Do our friends down in the University of Coral Gables have an issue due to their most prominent, and loudest, booster being at the forefront of possibly why these new rules were drawn up? Is the NCAA finally showing a backbone it hasn't had in sometime? Will this actually cool things down or simply push it back to under the table as it was before and why did it take them so long to make these rules? To end off an a better note, the fellas wrap up by highlighting the improved play of the FSU Baseball team being led by their elite starting pitching staff. What do they make of this team who can hang with the best but struggle with the bottom feeders of college baseball? Can we start hitting and why it is so important to do the basics like just getting on base.  As always, thank you all so much for making Locked On Seminoles your first listen each and every single day and with that being said on with the show.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! There are a lot of question marks around Mike Norvell's Florida State Seminoles heading into the 2022 season. Today, Max tries to answer some of the most pressing of those in another edition of Mandatory Mailbag Monday. First he discusses which position groups we are likely to see leave college early on a less frequent basis with free agents being guaranteed only a signing bonus and NIL being a factor. Then, Max ranks our position groups on both offense and defense. He talks about his concerns at wide receiver and his confidence in the interior defensive line and defensive secondary. Next, Max talks the issue du jour of if FSU will land another offensive line transfer before discussing the possibility that wide receiver Johnny Wilson could change positions and play tight end. Finally, Max talks about what he wants to see less of in Mike Norvell's offense next year as the team improves. Thank you, as always, for making Locked On Seminoles your first listen. Would Florida State Football Benefit if the ACC Eliminates Divisions? Will UF's Schedule Help FSU?

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2022 33:10

The NCAA is set to vote on a rule that would allow conferences to use methods other than divisions to decide which teams play in the conference championship game. This means that conferences would be free to design a format where the best two teams meet in the conference championship. The Big 12 is in favor of this model and the Big 10 has already expressed a desire to move to a "division-less model." Max and Drake pose the question: what would this mean for FSU if the ACC got rid of the two-division system. This segues into a discussion of whether other conferences would benefit from this and how this will play out as there is a push to expand the playoff. Next, after one of Max's greatest dad jokes of all time, the guys look at Florida State's schedule for 2022. Should FSU Football Beat LSU in 2022? Will Sending Five Transfers to NFL Help Mike Norvell Recruit?

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2022 30:41

The LSU Tigers sent ten players to the NFL this past weekend, the Bayou Bengals have lost 31 players to the draft since their 2019 championship, and they are in head coach Brian Kelly's inaugural season. Considering all of that, should the Seminoles be considered an underdog when Florida State takes on LSU in New Orleans this fall? Max and Dave ponder the question and come to the conclusion that the Noles should have a great chance to come back to Tallahassee with a victory. Further, what does a win over LSU mean for the national perception of the program? Will the casual fan care that LSU is in a slump or will FSU get automatic street cred for beating the Tigers? Next, Max and Dave look at the group of players FSU sent to the NFL this past weekend. They are disappointed by only having one player drafted. However, they do acknowledge that all five players were transfers and discuss if this should increase Mike Norvell's ability to recruit high-caliber transfer talent. One of the nation's top receivers, Pitt Panthers' Jordan Addison, is rumored to be heading to USC for a massive payday. Many fans and commentators, including the Florida State faithful, are starting to worry that NIL might spell the end of college football as we know it. Max and Drake do not agree. However, the current NIL landscape is far from perfect. The guys discuss why the courting of Jordan Addison feels different than other transfer activity to date. They then discuss if the solution is more regulation or if the market will self-correct. Max also poses the question of how fair this system is to smaller schools and if more should be done to protect parity. However, the guys ultimately conclude that there is work to be done but college football will not die at the hands of NIL and the transfer portal. Next, Max and Drake discuss Florida State's lackluster draft day showing. Will this make things more difficult for Mike Norvell and Co on the recruiting trail? or is this simply a meaningless data point? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Join the gang today on Locked On Seminoles, your favorite Florida State Seminoles podcast to see where the guys land on these questions. Drake and Dave are running the show today and lead it off with which games they view on the schedule as some "stole wins". Why does Drake feel that Norvell and company can march up into Louisville and stun Heisman sleeper Malik Cunningham under the Friday Night Lights. Does Dave view Tyler Van Dyke is an actual threat to the ACC or will he suffer a sophomore slump when the Hard Rock hosts the biggest rivalry in colleges sports? Most importantly, are potentially ranked squads LSU and Clemson going to drop their first game to Florida State in so many seasons? Next, unfortunately Dave, the conductor of today's experiment, has to take us to games that are potentially traps for Jordan Travis over the season. Does a healthy Phil Jurkovec give the fanbase pause for concern when the Boston College Eagles come to town? Even though they have lost some weapons, Dave Doreen and the NC State Wolfpack may pose a greater threat than ever with Devin Leary, Cory Durden and Cyrus Fagan returning. And lastly, out of Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Louisiana-Lafayette, is another inexcusable loss on the horizon for this Seminoles squad?  To wrap up today's show, Drake has the floor and decides to let the people know what has been troubling him. With the QB room under a microscope over the past few seasons & the lack of transfer QB coming into the fold, is there truly a scenario where AJ Duffy is starting at any point during the season, regardless of Jordan Travis' status. Can Malik McClain Lead FSU's Receiver Corps? What Does Mike Norvell Need from the Transfer Portal?

Florida State has a big problem. Despite an influx of talent into the wide receiver room, no one has cemented themselves in the WR 1 position. FSU needs Malik McClain or Johnny Wilson to fill the need or the coaching staff may have to continue scouring the transfer portal. Max and Dave kick off your Wednesday morning by discussing the top 3 in their respective wide receiver power rankings following the conclusion of spring practice and the Garnet & Gold Game. Max favors the smaller receivers while Dave explains why he hasn't lost confidence in the roster's current big men. After ranking the wide recievers on the roster, the guys discuss which positions they think Mike Norvell and Co need to supplement using the transfer portal. Do they need another pass catcher or should they prioritize the defensive side of the ball? Is finding a reliable backup QB even a possibility at this point and will AJ Duffy be ready for action in the fall if needed? Finally, the hosts give their thoughts on the coaching staff as things stand. Things could change but Max explains why he is laying off Ron Dugans for a bit but needs to see more from Tight Ends Coach Chris Thompsen's. FSU Football Needs to Run More Plays; Garnet & Gold Spring Game Recap; Running Back Power Rankings

FSU needs to run more plays if they are going to succeed on offense during the 2022 football season. Florida State Football was 82nd in the nation last year in plays per game. This is clearly a factor in their offensive woes given that applying Jordan Travis averages to the increased number of plays they would have ran to rank in the top 25 in PPG would have resulted in 400 additional passing yards and approximately 600 rushing yards. Max and Drake enter "Max's Math Corner" and breakdown why it is imperative that Mike Norvell finds a way to produce more offensive snaps next season. Next, the guys continue their discussion of Florida State's Garnet and Gold Spring Game. They express satisfaction with the running back room and cautious optimism about the wide receivers. Finally, they unveil their post-spring running back rankings. Their approach to these rankings differ in that Drake basis rankings on potential production in 2022 while Max uses an "in-the-moment" philosophy. Who do you have as your top running back exiting spring practice? As always, thanks for making Locked On Seminoles your first listen each and every single day and we hope you enjoy! "Reasons For Optimism": Spring Game Discussions, Can Jordan Travis Capitalize on his new Weapons & Amarius Mims Watch

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2022 60:40

With Florid State's Spring Game finally drawn to a close, the fellas are here to tell you what they think of the state of the football program on today's edition of your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports talk show, Locked On Seminoles. Today, the fellas with the vantage point of watching from afar and in person give out their likes and dislikes from the game that happened this past weekend. First, the fellas discuss how they felt regarding the offensive line. With 3 players out in Thomas Shrader, Lloyd Willis & Darius Washington, the line seemed to still perform admirably. Speaking of the trenches, it seems that the defensive front will once again be a point of strength for this Seminoles football team. With Fabien Lovett and Robert Cooper again up the middle proving to be a gruesome twosome to reckon with but also the ends are showcasing their talents as well. Do the boys feel this line can compete with anyone in the ACC for top D-Line and will the O-line finally become a respectable unit? Next, Drake asks his compadres a very important question. While he wasn't on the previous show, should the fanbase take Jordan Travis' somewhat pedestrian performance to heart. Has he taken a step forward? Is he still the same? Is the QB room overall an issue that still leaves the fanbase wanting for more? Judging from the interaction between the fellas and the live chat, this is a conversation you wont want to miss. Lastly, the guys briefly touch on the ever important topic that is the life blood of you favorite college football program: recruiting. Case in point, Class of 2021 5-star offensive tackle Amarius Mims, has entered the portal leaving behind the 2021 National Champion UGA Bulldogs. We breakdown not only the importance of landing this game-changing player, but also how important this moment in the new era of college football will be in showcasing FSU's standing in a post-NIL world. Also, this recruitment will also highlight another topic: how is Mike Norvell looked at FSU in comparison to rival Miami now being lead by former Hurricane Mario Cristobal. Is it Fair to Judge Jordan Travis in a Spring Game? What should Florida State Fans Expect for 2022? Does NIL Really Change College Football?

FSU should be an improved football team under Mike Norvell in 2022 but what should fans set as their expectations? Max and Dave breakdown what fans seem to be thinking while cautioning against letting hopes creep into expectations. They discuss how it is possible to both want more for their beloved Seminoles and be happy that the team is heading in the right direction. They also talk about what they will be watching for in the Spring Game. Is it fair to judge Jordan Travis when he isn't allowed to run? Will Tate Rodemaker shine? Can the O-Line block well enough to limit 3rd and long situations? Finally, Max and Dave discuss the effects NIL rules may have on the sport of college football. Will it drastically alter the sport or is it simply going to create new oligarchs in an already top-heavy sport? "Punters Are People Too": FSU Trenches Stacked with Malcom Ray & Jarret Jackson, State of the Offense & Green Jacket Hopes

Spring Season is in full effect and the fellas today discuss who they think the FSU fanbase needs to show a little bit more love on this edition of your favorite Florida State Seminoles daily sports talk show. First, right off the cuff, the triumvirate look towards both sides of the ball on who they think is not talked about enough. Kicking things off with the defensive side of the ball, Dave as always looks towards the trenches and highlights a former under the radar 3-star defensive tackle Malcolm Ray and what he thinks he can bring for the new season. Drake follows up with the south Florida defensive back Kevin Knowles who burst onto the scene last year but has been overshadowed by Omarion "Duke" Cooper. Lastly, Max, in typical max fashion, bens the rules a bit and picks two players in both Omarion Cooper and one Jarett Jackson to round out these silent assassins' of the defensive unit.  Next, the fellas look towards the offensive side of thing which actually opens up how the fellas truly feel about this side of the ball. Drake and Dave show some love to the skill positions in Cam McDonald and CJ Campbell which then has the boys ask themselves: how do they really feel about the offense heading into year 3 under Mike Norvell? Is the Offensive Line really improved or simply is it the face guys that actually are improved and the depth is lacking.  Lastly, in a twist, Golf aficionado Drake closes us out with a Masters centered segment as Seminole alums Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger try their best to don the green jacket by Sunday, and we learn what the golf pros Dave and Max would serve if they were the ones serving dinner at the Master's Champions dinner. Don't worry, neither of their choices are as bad as whatever Bubba Watson tried but it doesn't come near Hideki Matsuyama's selections this year. "Bless Em": Does FSU have a proven WR1 in Malik McClain, Bless Harris a starter & Trey Benson's Spring Game

Spring has sprung and Florida State's Spring game is coming up this Saturday and the fellas here at Locked on Seminoles are here to have you ready with an in-depth look at the Offensive depth chart (see what we did there). Today, on your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast, Max and Drake take a step back and give who they believe will be the starters for the Spring Game (if they actually faced off against an opponent).  First, the duo starts off with the wide receivers. The position group with the most turnover this past off-season, albeit much needed, who will we be seeing this weekend lining up first to receive passes from the Seminoles' signal callers. Will Malik McClain take that next step to be the potential Sunday player we know he can be? Can the old guard of Keyshawn Helton and/or Pokie Wilson prove to be a solid safety valve for the offense? Should we be worried about the tight end room as while the room has bodies, it may leave a lot to be desired. Next the guys talk about the hog mollies on the offensive line in what may be the first o-line in years that FSU fans don't have to worry about being dead last in the country. Can this group as a whole be average? IS Kayden Lyle's slow start to the spring a cause for concern? Who starts at the tackle spot? Is having Bless Harris as a starter asking a lot out of the former Lamar transfer? Do we really have 6-7 lineman we can feel good about heading into summer? Last, the boys talk about the stable of backs Norvell has amassed and the danger they can pose for opposing defenses. Question is, who will be the leader among them? Has Treshaun Ward locked down that RB1 spot? Is Trey Benson really that so far ahead of what was expected of him when he transferred form Oregon? Did Coach Mike Norvell catch Lightning in a bottle again with PWO CJ Campbell, the pride of Panama City Beach, Florida?  As always, thanks for making Locked On Seminoles your first listen each and every single day and we hope you enjoy!  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Is it fair to compare Mike Norvell to Jimbo Fisher? Mycah Pittman added to FSU WR power rankings

Max revisits his wide receiver power rankings following recent practice reports and the news that Winston Wright Jr will miss a significant amount of time by adding Mycah Pittman and removing his well intentioned, but horrible pick of Corey Wren. He also discusses what impact the loss of Wright might have on the season. Next, Max takes questions about the recruiting ability of Florida State coaching staffs past and present. Were Jimbo's classes perennially overrated? Does including transfers make Mike Norvell's classes close to Jimbo Fisher's in quality? Is this even a fair comparison given the circumstances under which they each took control of the program? Finally, Max gives his opinion on the nuances of the correlation between winning and getting better recruits. Max mulls whether or not this coaching staff has the ability to get a top class even if they are winning games. First up in the gauntlet, the fellas discuss the opening salvo of games Mike Norvell and FSU have on tap. Is this the year that FSU finally blows out an FCS opponent and we need not worry past the 1st Quarter? With the transfer of Jayden Daniels, does Jordan Travis catch Brian Kelly sleeping in his first season at Baton Rouge? How dangerous is Malik Cunningham in Week 3? Will the Boston College Eagles repeat another close game down in Tallahassee?  Next, the heart of the schedule is discussed as both Drake and Dave see this as a pivotal point in the 2022 season. Secret Wake Forest Demon Deacon booster Dave gives his reasons why Sam Hartman will fail to replicate last season's success, Drake discusses why Devin Leary makes NC State a dangerous team, how both of our hosts are on opposite side when it comes to good ol' Dabo's Clemson Tigers and how both feel that luck is running out for Geoff Collins' and the GT Yellow Jackets. To wrap up, the twosome look towards what may be the most important part of the schedule as it's a race to the finish as two rivalry games take center stage. With Cristobal now helming the team at Doak South, will Tyler Van Dyke put a scare into the Noles when Norvell and company travel down south? Will Dino Babers still be at Syracuse when FSU makes the trip? Who will be playing for ULL Ragin Cajuns when they travel to Tally? First question up to bat is regarding whether or not Mike Norvell and company have proven to be effective recruiters. How do the guys feel on this? SI there evidence to point in either direction that FSU football is getting better, or is it getting worse? Is the transfer portal a saving grace for this staff? Will winning games be the cure-all for what appears to be a very solid but not elite class?  Next, the fellas talk about the QB position as it is the topic that has been surging through the fanbase over the past few months. With the unknowns behind Jordan TRavis in the room, is all the spring hype behind one Tate Rodemaker justified? Is it too early to make a call? Can AJ Duffy take over the QB2 spot as a true freshman? Even further, is he good enough to start under center for Game 1 against Duquesne.  Lastly, the turnover in the wide receiver room has led us to have a lot of faith in what appears to be the unknown.
