"Orange Crush(ed)": FSU Closes Out ACC Play as Trey Benson & Jordan Travis helm Dominant Showing Against Syracuse Orange

Welcome back to another episode of Locked on Seminoles, your favoriter daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast! Drake and Dave delight in yet another blowout victory, this time a 38-3 thrashing of Syracuse, as Florida State is playing at the highest level we've seen in several. First, Drake and Dave discuss the incredible development and play of the FSU defense, which held Syracuse (which, surprisingly, was able to start QB Garrett Shrader) without an offensive touchdown and to just 160 total yards. A resurgent secondary, complimenting a finally healthy defensive line, as well as the emergence of youngsters, has Florida State playing the confident, dominant defense of Seminole past. Next, the guys turn to the offensive side of the ball, where star QB Jordan Travis turned in yet another excellent and efficient performance consisting of 5 total TDs (3 passing, 1 rushing, and 1 receiving), but was perhaps overshadowed once again by yet another career-best rushing performance from RB Trey Benson, who averaged over 9 yards per carry en route to over 160 yards, and refused to be tackled. Some trickeration, and importantly getting 10+ receivers involved, led to a performance by the offense matching the dominance of the defense. Finally, they discuss their general feelings about this Florida State team and coaching staff following their 7th win of the year (3rd in a row) and second consecutive conference blowout, with the ability to notch a 10-win season for the first time since 2016. No. 23 Florida State, in its ACC finale, put on a near-perfect performance vs. the Syracuse Orange. After scoring 14 points in the first quarter, Florida State's offense took a bit to get going before finding life again in the third, surging ahead to safely put the game out of striking distance for the Orange. The Seminoles put up 420 yards, once again showing that Mike Norvell has cultivated one of the most explosive offenses in the country. Though the offense had an overall impressive performance, it was the defense that once again showed out, holding a team without a touchdown for the second straight week. Syracuse averaged just 3.3 yards per play, totaling 160 on the night (with most coming in garbage time.) Impressive individual performances were to be found across the board, with running back Trey Benson logging his third straight 100+ yard game, receivers Malik McClain and Johnny Wilson showcasing physicality while scoring on screen passes and quarterback Jordan Travis completing the trifecta of offensive scoring by throwing for, rushing for and catching a touchdown. With the win, the Seminoles (7-3, 5-3 ACC) finish with their best record in conference play since 2016. Next up for Florida State is a home matchup vs. the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (5-5, 3-4 Sun Belt), who are coming off a 36-17 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles. Looking for its third win in a row, your Florida State Seminoles travel to Syracuse and take on Dino Babers, and a struggling Syracuse Orange football team. Today, your friends here at Locked On Seminoles, your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast are here with another Gameday-day Walkthrough of the team. AS always with The Walkthrough, Drake and Dave discuss what are they keys to victory here for the Seminoles and Mike Norvell. Offensively, how aggressive do they need to be on the ground? Can Norvell and Atkins take advantage of a supremely banged up Syracuse defense who started off hot, but is now struggling after missing pieces in their defensive unit? While Syracuse's offense, when led by Garrett Shrader was humming, since he went down it has struggled to find it footing with UF transfer Carlos Del Rio-Wilson. Furthermore, Sean Tucker, many p[peoples pick as the best RB in the conference heading into the year and potentially a top 5 back in the country, has shown signs of severely slowing down. Let's see if Adam Fuller can continue this aggressive defensive approach he has had the past few weeks.  Unsung heroes, game predictions and more is what's in store for you from the Walkthrough and honestly, it will have you more than confident in the Seminoles heading into Saturday night.   As always, we here at Locked On Seminoles want to thank each and every single one of you for all the love and support. Hello everyone, happy Wednesday and welcome to Noles News Now, the latest in Florida State Seminoles sports, brought to you by Tomahawk Nation. I'm your host Perry Kostidakis -- let's jump right in. Florida State has earned its first College Football Playoff ranking since 2016, the year that FSU faced off and beat Michigan in the Orange Bowl. The Seminoles debuted at No. 23 in the second edition of this year's rankings, an improvement of two spots from the squad's standing in the AP Top 25. FSU isn't ranked in the Coaches Poll, but, hey, you can't win them all, and also -- it doesn't matter. The ranking is a reflection of the fact that, despite 3 losses, FSU has performed as at least one of the top 25 teams in the country. I'm going to drop a couple of stat bombs on you --  FSU has put together one of the most explosive offenses in the country, a balanced rushing and passing attack led by a significantly-improved Jordan Travis, who has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC and arguably, the country. Florida State is now No. 1 in the country in 20+ yard plays, having logged 69 on the season (62 vs. Power 5 competition.) According to FSU Sports Info, Florida State is one of four teams in the country (and the only team in the ACC) averaging at least 270 yards of passing offense and at least 210 yards of rushing offense per game this season.  On the defensive end, while there is still room for improvement in a variety of areas, the Seminoles have also taken a step forward — FSU has allowed the fourth-fewest 20+ yard plays this season (24) while holding opponents to just 19.8 points per game (No. 22 in the country). Also via FSU Sports Info, Florida State is first in the ACC and fifth in the country in pass defense, holding opponents to an average of 165.0 yards per game through the air. The Seminoles also are first in the ACC and rank nine nationally, holding opponents to an average of 6.1 yards per pass attempt FSU leads the nation with 15 touchdown drives of 80+ yards and with seven 90+-yard touchdown drives this season. The Seminoles also rank fourth in explosive play rate differential, trailing only Georgia, Ohio State and Tulane, with an offense explosive play rate of 16.8 percent that ranks sixth nationally and a defense explosive plays allowed rate of 9.2 percent that is 15th in the country So basically -- yeah, Florida State is a pretty good football team. The Seminoles face off against the Syracuse Orange this Saturday at 7 p.m. and are currently 6.5 point favorites. In other FSU news, the soccer team is getting set to take on FGCU in the squad's NCAA Tournament opener. FSU, the defending national champs and winners of the ACC Tournament, are the overall no. 1 seed and look to be set up well to at the very least make a deep run. Our Prince Akeem Joeffer, the best of the best when it comes to Florida State women's athletics, has you covered with a layout of the bracket and other thoughts on the program up on the site right now. The Florida State Seminoles are halfway to sweeping their in-state rivalries this season as they gave the Miami Hurricanes everything they could handle and a whole lot more in Saturday's 45-3 victory. The Noles looked clearly the better team as they ran out to a huge lead and never looked back. They clinched bowl eligibility for the first time since 2019 and did so with the largest margin of victory in the history of the FSU-UM series. This week, the Seminole Wrap crew — Brian Pellerin and Max Escarpio (as Jon Marchant finishes out his old guy vacation) — discuss what led to the blowout, how the team and program should feel about and what goal should be for the rest of the season. Welcome back to another episode of Locked on Seminoles, your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast! Drake and Dave relish in Florida State's utter domination of a hapless and embarrassing Miami football team, and highlight the equally impressive play of the defense and the offense, as the Seminoles tie the largest margin of victory EVER in a road game in this rivalry, winning 45-3. First, Drake and Dave take a victory lap, explaining just how bad that Miami team is (and how much worse they've gotten) under $8 million head coach Mario Cristobal, as the Hurricanes not only didn't belong on the same field as Florida State, but moreover they acted like they didn't even want or care to be there. Contrast that to a Seminoles squad that understood the importance of the rivalry and making a statement therein, as all phases of FSU (including backups) kept their foot on Miami's throat for 4 full quarters. Next, the guys gush over the play of the Florida State defense, with too many incredible individual and team efforts to list off in 30 minutes, including Jammie Robinson's disrespectful TFL (the highlight of which will live on forever in this rivalry), Fabien Lovett's uplifting presence for the defensive line and the defense as a whole, Tatum Bethune's homecoming statement, Jared Verse thanking Miami for only adding to his soon-to-be NFL paycheck, youngsters such as Patrick Payton and AZ Thomas showing out, and plenty more. Finally, they highlight the play of the offense, starting with a monstrous, Dalvin Cook-like performance in which he refused to be tackled by Miami's indifferent and undisciplined defenders, as well as an impressive performance by Jordan Travis (who wasn't asked and didn't have to do much in this one), incredible catches by Pokie Wilson and Johnny Wilson, and last but certainly not least a statement game from Florida State's offensive line giving JT13 all the time he needed and opening up running lanes for the Seminoles' stable of running backs (which didn't even need Treshaun Ward in this one). Welcome in to Noles News Now, your audio home for all things happening in Florida State athletics on the Tomahawk Nation podcast network. What a welcome back to the FSU-Miami rivalry, Mario Cristobal. Better luck next time. Happy victory Monday to you our listener. Your Florida State Seminoles are now bowl-eligible after a thoroughly, dominant and I mean dominant 45-3 win over Miami this past weekend. Thanks so much for tuning in. I'm Brian Pellerin on this Monday, November 7th. Apologies for the late timing on this podcast this week, we're trying something different by recording on my Monday lunch break after Mike Norvell's usual Monday press conference. We start this afternoon in the obvious place and that is Saturday's blowout in Miami Gardens. The Seminoles asserting their will early taking a huge lead into half and never looking back. The stars on the day — Trey Benson who posted 15 carries for 128 and 2 TDs and then the FSU defense holding Miami to just 3 points in the game that came on their first drive. Otherwise, it was a lot of 3-and-outs plus turnovers. The Canes simply never had a prayer in this one. The stadium started emptying out in the second quarter and looked more like a normal Miami home game throughout the second half. Benson and OL-man Dillan Gibbons earned ACC Player of the Week honors as well. The victory puts Florida State back in the top 25 of the AP poll. They still remain a bit of a ways out in the coaches' poll. The college football playoff rankings drop tomorrow night. This week's opponent Syracuse, no longer in those polls after dropping a third straight game. That one was a battle of teams playing without their top offensive player. Cuse going without QB Garrett Shrader who appears to be moving close to a return after warming up this past weekend and Pitt is without their star running back. Either way, it was Pitt who came out victorious so Noles headed to Syracuse to face a team on a losing streak, desperate to right their ship. Oddsmakers like FSU as they opened as a 7-point favorite on the road. Outside of the field, two headlines in Tallahassee. First coming Saturday night when the broadcast showed Mike Norvell and Deuce Spann on the sideline where Spann was clearly frustrated as Norvell tried to get his head back in the game. Asked about it today, Norvell said “It's about me helping to get him back to where he's in control — when you get to that point, your mind can race to a million different places... He apologized and I just told him I loved him.” Norvell received some praise online for how he handled that moment. The other coming from a potential transfer off this team. This morning, Sam McCall posted online a note that he was entering the transfer portal, but later deleted the post, saying he made it off emotion. So it appears he will remain with the team for the time being. That is certainly something that could come up in this week's Tribe ‘23 Recruiting and Portal Thread with our experts Josh Pick, Tim Scribble, and David Stout. They've got the details on everything you need for potential roster shakeups in both recruiting and the portal. How about the ACC champs? Did you hear about that? Your reigning national champion FSU soccer team has added another trophy to their resume as they picked up the ACC title in a really even 2-1 victory against North Carolina. Florida State has now won nine of the last 12 ACC titles. Incredible run for that program. The NCAA tourney selection show is this afternoon at 4 so it may be out already depending on when you're listening to this. Good luck going forward, Noles. Let's go back to back. Hoops season is here also as the FSU men's team opens their year tonight at 7 pm against Stetson. The FSU women already rolled through its first opponent with a 113-50 win against Bethune Cookman this morning. That'll do it for today's Noles News Now. Until next time, I'm Brian Pellerin. The Miami Hurricanes got beaten down 45-3 by the Florida State Seminoles and fans are now learning that the rebuild being attempted by head coach Mario Cristobal will take longer than they'd hoped or expected. Can Miami keep players like Cormani McClain, Francis Mauigoa, Jayden Wayne and Jaden Rashada locked in for the class of 2023? How come Miami is doing so much worse with a first year coach than teams like LSU, Oregon, USC, and Notre Dame who are now thriving? Larry Blustein from 560 WQAM joins host Alex Donno to discuss the fallout from Miami's loss to Florida State. The guys discuss true freshman quarterback Jacurri Brown, who showed some promise in the game. Could Brown be competing for a starting job as soon as next year? What happens next year with Tyler Van Dyke and Jake Garcia? Larry explains what it will take from Cristobal to get Miami back to prominence. The Miami Hurricanes were dominated by the Florida State Seminoles in a 45-3 loss at Hard Rock Stadium. This is one of the most lopsided losses in the history of this rivalry, and head coach Mario Cristobal is facing tons of questions about what went wrong. In front of a sellout crowd at Hard Rock Stadium, the Hurricanes could not score a touchdown and could not stop QB Jordan Travis, running back Trey Benson, or anyone else in the FSU offense.  Host Alex Donno gives his big takeaways from the game. One of the few positives came from true freshman quarterback Jacurri Brown. He ran well, completed a big pass to Xavier Restrepo, and showed fight that most Miami players didn't. Brown was called into action after starter Tyler Van Dyke tweaked his shoulder early on, and backup Jake Garcia struggled. Could Brown be the future starter at The U? Miami has gone 9 quarters without scoring a touchdown. Kicker Andy Borregales is the only player to score since the third quarter against Duke. He hit a 49 yarder against FSU.  Donno talks about how this loss impacts recruiting. 2023 commits like Francis Mauigoa, Malik Bryant, Antonio Tripp and Ray Ray Joseph are all outspoken about how motivated they are to stick with Miami and help fix these problems. Even Ohio State recruits like Mark Fletcher and Brandon Inniss, who were both at the game visiting, are speaking positively about what Miami is building. Could either of them be flipped to Miami? Donno expects several players on this current roster to hit the portal before next year. Expect a much different Canes roster in 2023.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Miami Hurricanes need to create explosive plays against the Florida State Seminoles. Miami is 108th in the nation in producing plays of 20 or more yards this season. Will a healthy receiving corps with players like Xavier Restrepo, Colbie Young, and Jacolby George help the Canes get over that hump? Miami will need another special performance from their defensive line with stars like Leonard Taylor, Darrell Jackson and Akheem Mesidor needing to shine.  Host Alex Donno reviews Miami's keys to the game which will also include Tyrique Stevenson and the Hurricanes defensive backfield containing 6-7 WR Johnny Wilson. Miami will also count on players like Kam Kinchens and James Williams to produce turnovers. Donno goes over the stock report for this week and who he's “buying.” Do you agree that Henry Parrish has potential for another solid rushing performance. Should we be buying LOW on Jaylan Knighton? Donno looks at a big list of reported visitors in recruiting. Committed players like Francis Mauigoa, Emory Williams, Bobby and Robby Washington and Ray Ray Joseph are expected. Plus, 4-star CB target Damari Brown and 4-star EDGE Rueben Bain will likely be at the game, too. Donno breaks down Miami getting the final official visit for 5-star ATH Nyckoles Harbor and explains what makes him so special. The Canes are a finalist for him and he will announce in February. Then, they ask and answer the golden question: how and why in the heck is this Miami team so utterly terrible under first year coach Mario Cristobal; as well as preview the upcoming matchup against Miami, including areas of concern for Florida State, deficiencies of the Hurricanes that can be exploited, the importance of getting RB Treshaun Ward back in the lineup, whether we should be concerned about the FSU OL's matchup against the strength of Miami's team (its DL), what to expect in the matchup, why this feels like such a particularly must-win game in this heated rivalry, and of course a prediction! As always, you know Trey and the guys bring the heat for Miami hate week, so this is one fun episode you won't want to miss! Drake and Dave continue Miami hate week and dig deeper into Florida State's matchup against the hapless Hurricanes, offering reasons why FSU should win resoundingly in this matchup and the implications of doing so, and bringing back a special guest (yup, it's Max!) to join in the fun! First, the guys discuss big picture issues with Mario Cristobal's Canes this season which are particularly exploitable in this matchup, including a putrid offense, first half scoring woes, and key defensive deficiencies, among many other things which revolved around the question: is there a massive regression around Tyler Van Dyke or is is the coaching and scheming of Josh Gattis and Mario Cristobal.  Next, they bring in a special guest that you know and love to discuss key statistical areas that Florida State should particularly look to exploit, including and especially explosiveness defense, which suits well an FSU offense that's thrived on chunk plays. If Middle Tennessee State could do it, Jordan Travis then should just have an absolute field day against the Canes right?  Finally, they weigh the implications of a Florida State win against the Hurricanes, especially on the recruiting trail, and discuss why this is a virtually must-win (and perhaps must-big-win) matchup. Implications around recruiting, perception and optics among her fanbase, Norvell and company have a chance to step up to the plate and go yard against the University of Coral Gables.  As always, thanks for making Locked on Seminoles your first listen each and every day. It's one of the greatest rivalries in athletics. Florida State Seminoles football (5-3, 3-3 ACC) and the Miami Hurricanes (4-4, 2-2 ACC) are set to etch the next chapter in the storied series between the two schools this Saturday. Currently, FSU is a 7.5-point favorite over Miami (according to DraftKings), a reflection of the Seminoles' uptick in performance this year and a disappointing debut season so far for Mario Cristobal. Last season, the Seminoles snapped a losing streak to the Hurricanes by way of a dramatic 31-28 victory in Tallahassee. This year the two face off inside Hard Rock Stadium for a primetime showdown, scheduled for a 7:30 kickoff and set to be broadcast on ABC. On this week's episode of the Line of Scrimmage, where ahead of each game this football season, we're giving you insight into Florida State's opponents from those in the know, we spoke with Hurricanes' beat writer Adam Lichtenstein of the Sun-Sentinel. Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke might be ready to return this weekend against the Florida State Seminoles. Mario Cristobal says he has been practicing and making progress. TVD has not played since being knocked out of the second quarter against the Duke Blue Devils. Cristobal is preparing Van Dyke, Jake Garcia and true freshman Jacurri Brown for this game. Miami will likely put Brown on the field in certain packages no matter who starts.  Host Alex Donno breaks down the importance Van Dyke will have on this game if he plays. Top receiver Xavier Restrepo just returned against Virginia and should be ready for an even bigger role against the Seminoles. Miami's receiving corps is healthier than it's been all season, with Jacolby George having recently returned, too.  Donno discusses 4-star 2023 cornerback Damari Brown of American Heritage naming the Miami Hurricanes as one of his four finalists along with Alabama, Clemson and Florida State. Brown has been strongly trending to Miami and will be making an official visit this weekend. What would he bring to the table if he chooses The U??? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Miami Hurricanes will likely need to show their best performance of the season on Saturday to defeat the Florida State Seminoles. Starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke is questionable at best with an upper body injury, so we might see redshirt freshman Jake Garcia start for the second straight week. Host Alex Donno believes Miami needs to WIN the turnover margin and establish a consistent running game. If Van Dyke is healthy enough to play, that could be the edge Miami needs.  Guest Rashad Butler, former Hurricanes offensive tackle, shares his memories from the rivalry. He went 4-1 against Florida State between 2001 and 2005. Rashad describes the feeling of running through that tunnel to face the Seminoles and explains why these games just feel different. He remembers the amazing performance by Sean Taylor against FSU back in 2003, and Frank Gore scoring the game-winning TD in overtime in 2004.  The guys break down the keys for Miami's defense against mobile Seminoles quarterback Jordan Travis. Fresh off the team's second bye week of the 2022 season, the Florida State Seminoles were able to thoroughly dominate the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to start their final stretch run. The Noles opened the first quarter rusty, turning the ball over on downs on their opening drive and then fumbling it away on their following possession, but Florida State was able to bounce back from there and nearly triple the Yellow Jackets in yards and double them in first downs on the way to another win. So what helped the Noles get back in the win column? And what do they still need to clean up as they head to Miami for an in-state rivalry game and in search of bowl eligibility? The Miami Hurricanes are 9 point underdogs against the Florida State Seminoles. Can the Hurricanes defense slow down the vaunted rushing attack of the Seminoles, who lead the ACC in rushing? Can Miami get enough offense from running back Henry Parrish and whoever start at the quarterback position. Can third string QB Jacurri Brown, who gets reps in short yardage, be one of the answers for Miami to win this game? Host Alex Donno argues that anything can happen in a rivalry game even if one team is significantly more hampered by injuries than the other. Donno answers questions from listeners. You can tweet us at @LockedOnCanes. Many questions are wondering if the offensive play-calling is one of the achilles heels for these Canes. Welcome in to Noles News Now, your audio home for all things happening in Florida State athletics on the Tomahawk Nation podcast network. A victory and record breaking  Monday for the FSU football team as they enter rivalry week. Thanks so much for tuning in. I'm Brian Pellerin on this Monday October 31st. Happy Halloween.  That record breaking effort came from the football team in a blowout win over Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets were clearly no match for FSU as evidence by the 41-16 final score. The Noles were far from perfect in the game and still dominated the yardage, first downs and of course points. Jordan Travis broke his personal passing yardage mark with 394. That was a big piece of a larger FSU historical game as this game was the third time in FSU history that they had a QB throw for 375, a running back for over 100 -- Trey Benson's 111 -- and a wide receiver over 100 with Johnny Wilson going for 111 as well.  Another big note was Fabian Lovett made his first appearance since the second game of the season. A huge piece to have back heading into rivalry week against Miami.  The Canes coming off a 4-OT 14-12 win this weekend against Virginia that saw no touchdowns. They're far from playing their best football and oddsmakers will tell you that. FSU is an 8-point favorite on this one Sunday night. We'll see if that moves during the week.  A win this week would give FSU bowl eligibility but also a nice welcome to the conference to Mario Cristobal. A statement victory could also help in some recruiting battles with the Canes. Mike Norvell and the coaching staff had plenty of potential Tribe 23 guys on campus this past week. For more on that, you can check out our recruiting and portal thread with plenty of great insight all for free.  Elsewhere on campus, FSU basketball hit with some bad news this weekend as the NCAA announced star freshman Baba Miller violated guidelines when his family received travel to and from a training camp from his native Spain to the U-S. That ruling puts Miller out of action for half the season. Miller and his family say they immediately paid back the benefits once they learned it violated NCAA rules. Athletic Director Michael Alford was none too pleased with the ruling saying the decision seems disproportionate and inconsistent in today's modern environment. Miller will continue to practice with the team so he's ready to return after his 16-game suspension.  The FSU volleyball team dropped a 4-set match to Boston College on Sunday. They'll face Clemson next on Friday.  Women's basetball dominated West Georgia 115-46 in an exhibition game.  And the No. 5 soccer team closed out their regular season with a 4-1 win over Virginia Tech.  That'll do it for today's Noles News Now. Until Wednesday, I'm Brian Pellerin.
