BUSINESS INSTAGRAM: @arianaadonovan Hello everyone!!! This was originally a podcast created by me in order to raise awareness about issues within the fashion industry not many are aware of unless they’ve worked in it themselves or know someone who has…it’s still kind of that. But we talk about a lot more things too, like social norms, corrupt companies, and more :) I’ve modelled professionally since I was 16, & I study law & politics, so lots of my work is focused on power, power dynamics, & oppression. Subscribe if you’re pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down ðŸ¤
MAN I have been BUSY! I have almost no time at all to research these episodes anymore, but, that just means there's opportunities for growth in other departments :) in this episode I give you guys a little update on where I've been for the past couple months, what to expect from Model POV, where you can stay updated on me now (Instagram & my other podcast), and you get to hear me debate myself on what content I should add. Thank you very much for the patience, understanding, and incredible amount of support I've received! I tend to beat myself up about not being able to be as attentive as I'd like, but thanks to you guys, I know you understand the situation
We've all had some bad photos taken of us, but what makes a bad photo BAD? Camera lens distortion, the subject being too close to the camera, focus, lighting, and more! Despite the extensive list, we almost never think of these due to how our brains interpret information from photos- we just let the photo define us, or another person.
From “Heroin Chic” in the 90's-2000's, to the “Vinegar Diet” of Lord Byron, to the now extremely popular cosmetic surgery- the BBL- that is literally killing people, how far will people go to attain a socially constructed ideal? In this episode we unpack diet culture and it's origins, and I remind you all that the easily consumable media we have at our fingertips today is the reason for it- despite diet culture's influence in the 20th century.
Harvey Glatman, who was active in the 1950's was dubbed the “Glamour Girl Killer” for his selection of victims, with 3 of them being models who were recruited from agencies. His crimes had actually inspired another infamous serial killer, the BTK Killer, specifically in the usage of rope.
I have no time to research anything, so here's more life advice :') please bear with me, and thank you for your patience! Narcissists aren't obsessed with themselves as often as we think they are- in fact, it's actually the opposite. Why does it happen? How can you prevent narcissists from gaining control over your peace of mind? By understanding you are not responsible for their feelings
In 2008, the supermodel Ruslana Korshunova- also known as the “Russian Repunzel” because of her knee-length hair, lept to her death from the balcony of her Manhattan apartment. Many close to her said she showed no signs of mental illness, but that she did have connections to a Russian cult: the Rose of the World
In my last episode, or maybe the one before that, I had briefly mentioned that I wanted to get my friend Maddy on the podcast to discuss the topic of social norms with me. In this episode, not only do we discuss that, but also how it had affected Maddy living in a small town for most of her life vs. my lived experience with them, having grown up in a city with a population of 200,000 or so (still small, but significantly bigger than her town). We discuss how they're limiting beliefs, the lessons we've learnt overcoming them, and how to break free from the mental repetition.
Hello!!! I'm back from the dead (midterms)!! With the Fashion Worker's Act making as much headway as it has over the past few weeks, I thought we'd talk about something that seems to be on a lot of people's minds- would unionizing the fashion industry be beneficial? Or would it deter it even more? In this episode I list 5 pros and 5 cons of unionizing that not many people would think of at first glance.
I have nothing to say aside from it's always better to stay in your lane ✨
I'm sure we've all been in social situations where we feel like we can't really say what's on our mind, or that nobody cares, but why do we actually feel like this? Short answer: social norms, a humanly devised constraint on human behaviour that isn't law (everyone just think it is). Allowing ourselves to be fully open is one of the only tried and true methods of living as our highest selves.
HELLO!!! IVE BEEN GONE FOR SO LONG BUT WELCOME TO ALL THE NEW FRIENDS WHO HAVE FOUND ME! ❤️ In this episode I give you some of my life updates- why I've been gone for a bit, school, self-employment, etc.- and then explain why these moments of disappearing are so important, why they help me/you come back better, and how to give yourself grace as you learn. Thanks for listening!
What prevents you from being manipulated? Yourself. Who's employing you as a model? Yourself. (Surprise! It's not your agency.) That being said, it's completely up to you for your career's progress, and that's why it's so important to speak up for yourself when you're uncomfortable or don't agree with what's being suggested to you :)
So often we are saying how agents don't treat models the best, and it is true! In some instances. The majority of the time it's knowing who you can work with, openly communicate with, and learn from, and who is only hiring you to make money off of you paying for training, portfolio shoots, etc. From my experience, having agents you can talk to about anything has been way more beneficial for me than trying to figure out how to navigate this industry on my own. It may sound like the bare minimum (and it is), but sometimes people don't realize that simple respect & kindness is what you should always expect from your employer. Consequently, you need to be respectful and kind too if you expect to get anywhere with your career- in a creative industry or not
It's soooo hard to get things done when you have a small voice in the back of your head telling you you'll never accomplish anything. Even more so when you have other people telling you that. How can you move past the negativity and into alignment with yourself? You do it anyways, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Why do you think the way that you do? What triggered it? In this episode we learn how to be introspective with ourselves.
A whole bunch of articles about me came out yesterday & the comments my friends saw of people who weren't fully in agreement with the legislation is exactly why times need to change and exactly why I started doing this. I could've reacted differently, but responding to the comments would be me pretty much throwing away every lesson I've learnt thus far. In this episode I talk about how I turned my anger I had as a teen to my drive to do better & help others as an adult.
Naive teenagers always need to have a parent or guardian with them in regards to business meetings, I'm a prime example of that. I talk about my struggles with mental health as a teen & how modeling affected it, physically, mentally, and spiritually. TW: Eating Disorder, Depression, Anxiety
A 2021 study by NewsCorp found that 91% of consumers agree there's still room to grow in regards to diversity in advertising, yet while this need for inclusion is happening within societies, AI models are on the rise and modeling in the two most common industries: E-Commerce & Commercial modeling. What does it mean for models, and how will this affect society's perceptions of beauty moving forward?
Happy Halloween, here's something even spookier…corporate greed!
I know this is lonnngggg overdue, but life has been busy. I thought you guys deserved an explanation as to where I disappeared to so unexpectedly, and I came up with a new posting schedule to better accommodate the life changes! I'll be posting every Monday/Tuesday now instead of every Sunday. Thank you for being patient with me!
Victoria's Secret has been a fashion mogul for decades, having influenced not only my generation but the previous, and the one before that. They have been around FOREVER. However, in that time, they've also perpetuated a culture of abuse- ranging from the sexual abuse of their models to an unhealthy ideal they showed to the public. I talk about all the details of it in here, as well as how it influenced I & those around me growing up.
I didn't have much time to research this past week, so we did this one without a script and with me speaking entirely on experience! Never compare yourself! “the light you see in others is also within you.”
Wow, it's been a minute. Thank you for being so patient while I uploaded and recorded this episode- there has been so many life changes (all good though) and I know I went MIA! In this episode we talk about authenticity, and how to maximize your own authenticity to get whatever you want out of life (specifically, with your career).
How disappointing is it when you have all of these things you're proud of that you've done, and no one seems to be as excited about it as you are? How defensive do you get when that happens? In this episode we'll be talking about the art of not caring, staying centered, and letting your work as well as your authenticity speak for you.
So you've achieved all these things…now what? You're sitting at home and find yourself undermining your success- saying it was easy and that anyone could do it. But the truth is they can't! You now have to acknowledge your own hard work and perseverance in order for you to fully accept the recognition you've received. In this episode, I give you advice on how to remind yourself you are worthy of every good thing.
Stop! Comparing! Yourself! In the modelling industry especially it is so easy to compare yourself to someone and think “wow I wish I was like them”. But what they fail to realize is that diversity is beauty, and if we were all the same person we wouldn't be able to create as much as we do. Another person's success/win is not your loss.
Ew ew ew. With Megan Fox being Megan Fox, I am honestly not surprised at the over-sexualization she's faced in the industry. Unfortunately I couldn't tell all her experiences, otherwise I think we would be here for at least an hour, but we focus mainly on her weird working relationship(?) with Michael Bay. How does fixing a car show your acting skills?? Why would you cast a 15 year old as a stripper, and then make her dance soaking wet under a waterfall when she couldn't get into the bar? It's just common decency people, c'mon.
We discuss how rejection is simply redirection and how to maintain a positive mindset when you are rejected in the modelling industry. I offer some advice on what has helped me, and explain why casting directors, agents, etc. may turn you down (and how to consistently get yes')
Oh man, oh man, oh man…where do I begin? This episode was inspired by Models Empowered's recent episode (check them out if you haven't already), I thought I could talk about the points they discussed and say what my own experiences were on this topic, as well as offer advice that I've found has helped me.
“LEAVE! BRITNEY! ALONE!” (Meme reference). In this episode we talk about the conservatorship Britney Spears is currently under, despite her being of sound mind, her family's defence, and the court heRing that just happened in regards to it.
Who was Sharon Tate aside from a victim to the brutal Manson murders & a Hollywood star? In this episode we dive into her early life, career, and ultimately what ended her career- a crazed man with a knife.
Since 2017, Nestlé, as well as several other companies, have been facing multiple lawsuits in regards to child labour, which have been being continually dismissed by the court. The most recent one happened this year in 2021, with 8 different former child slaves seeking justice. Only to have it thrown out in the US Supreme Court because it “was not on US soil” (yet America- as well as the Ivory Coast in Africa, where these cocoa farms are- are part of the International Labour Organization). We break down why the Supreme Court's dismissal is a refusal to hold big companies accountable, as well as the lawsuit itself.
In 1932 Shirley Temple starred in “Baby Burlesks”, a series of short films which feature her playing some very grown-up roles, but as a child. We talk about not only her roles, but also why it's weird Hollywood would have her insinuate sex work as a toddler, as well as their weird obsession with over-sexual using children (and pre-teens as we have seen recently from Netflix) in general.
In this episode we quickly discuss supermodel Brooke Shields and her mother Teri Shields, and the controversial jobs/roles Brooke was playing growing up, such as shooting a nude editorial for Playboy at age 10 with the expressed permission of her mother.
I interviewed a photographer I worked with earlier this year following up on a conversation him & I had over a couple milkshakes at the Déjà Vu Café in Moose Jaw! He mentioned he doesn't like to edit his clients, and in this episode he explains his reasoning for that :)
In this episode I summarize the investigation of Gérald Marie, former head of Elite Paris, and the extensive list of sexual assault/harassment allegations against him that led to him being suspended from Elite in 2000, and him currently being in the process of being prosecuted for his crimes against women and children in the industry.
I posted a question box on to my Instagram story this past week, so in this episode I will be answering them! Thanks for submitting!
I love Billie, I'm not even gonna lie. I've personally been a fan of her music since she started, I haven't listened to her much recently but her new song, “Your Power”, came on the radio on my way back from work this week and I couldn't help myself from appreciating how beautiful it sounded. I did some research afterwards, since the hosts were talking about the back story behind it a little bit, and unfortunately it happened to be inspired by some not-so-good experiences she had as a minor in the music industry. I thought it related to what I try to advocate for- so we are talking about it! I've said it once and I'll say it again- you would never expect or anticipate abuse of any kind at a “regular” job.
Hello friends! In this episode we discuss how people's programming from the media influences their ideals of beauty, as well as my own experience having ‘fit' into that ideal (being thin) and being somewhat praised for it (when I shouldn't be, since I literally am just skinny because of genetics). Don't enforce beauty standards and realize that the best way to be beautiful is to be yourself!!
This is probably the dumbest thing I've ever had to research and record on here so far. Demi Lovato recently has been involved in some drama with a small business in LA called “The Bigg Chill” over some sugar-free cookies, dubbing the restaurant as “#DietCultureVultures” on her Instagram. Unsurprisingly, she has not gotten that much support in her heroic cause. Here's my hot take on the incident as someone who has been recovering from an eating disorder herself for the past 4 years.
In this episode I explain how intricate the world of sex trafficking truly is, and we talk about the documentary “Eyes Of The Devil” on YouTube.
Thank you @frozenwavwphotography on Instagram for suggesting this topic! We discuss the scientific properties of burnout in this, as well as some advice on how to manage it.
Oh man, oh man. What else is new? Ghislane Maxwell's case was ruled “too sensational and impure” for the public by US Judge Allison J. Nathan this past week, so we are talking briefly about her crimes and relationship with Jeffrey Epstein in this episode.
I thought we'd talk about something a little different today! I was going to interview a friend but she's super busy, and this (LOA) plays a massive role in why I'm able to do what I do, so I thought I'd share some advice regarding it :) have a good week!
Ah yeah, time to reflect on yet another poor life decision I've made in the past. In this episode we talk about me being sexually harassed by a woman-stylist on set for an editorial I shot when I was 18.
Ah yes, yet another rich CEO who thinks they can do anything they want because they have power. Why am I not even surprised? In this episode we talk about the founder of Guess Jeans, his recent sexual assault allegations against him, and his previous lawsuit with the model Kate Upton.
In this episode we talk about the recent proposition made to president Biden about appointing a “fashion Czar”, who regulates the environmental impact made by the fashion industry and labour standard laws for workers
This episode is a bit different than our last ones. This past week was Bell Let's Talk, which inspired this topic. I talk about my struggles with mental health, my view on the destigmatization of mental illness as someone who battled it for a long time, and briefly about the controversy surrounding Bell Let's Talk and my opinion on it. TW: depression, anxiety, eating disorders
In this episode we talk about Instagram's new censorship policies that came into affect Dec. 20th, 2020 and how it affects not only creatives but the general public
In this episode we discuss the prevalence of financial abuse within the fashion industry and how to avoid the pit-falls as a new model.
Alexander Wang's recent sexual assault allegations against many male and trans models that have came out recently. #UsToo
