Last week a listener emailed us: "To add fuel to the fire with the Bell layoffs, us Bell MTS employees don't know what will be happening to us." "When Bell bought out MTS, they said they will “invest in the community” but as you'll hear in Episode 18, "the future seems bleak to say the least." Click to donate today- Winnipeg's Public Affairs Watchdog – Funded by You! Part 1- A letter from Unifor's Director for telecom members was sent the day after Bell Media dumped radio and TV employees. There's more layoffs planned across Canada, but in Manitoba, the idea "faces obstacles in targeting specific positions" and Marty Gold tells listeners why. But that's not all... 12:26 Part 2- Once, MTS was a coveted employer and source of pride for Manitobans. But insider details about the downward spiral under Bell's ownership tell a sad tale: - "I like my job, the pay, benefits and pension but things have gotten toxic and rotten to the core after Bell took over." - A 66% decrease in staffing levels, as two flagship sites are half or less full. - "The error rate with the Nordia representatives are so high" that management approaches experienced Bell MTS reps for their own customer service needs directly at work "instead of calling in like a customer." - Buyouts, people quitting "due to the high stress levels/toxic work environment and outsourcing of our jobs" to low-pay companies such as Nordia and Sitel, which is "why you get inferior customer service." - "Moral at work is at all time low, cutting hours for casual part time and regular part time employees to the point where they have to get a second job or quit." - A layoff clause that's the "obstacle" the union mentioned that makes mass buyouts prohibitive, so "if they can't get rid of us, they will make life miserable where we quit." To send in story tips, sponsor podcasts, and contribute support for our expenses by Interac: martygoldlive@gmail.com Our source also took aim at the hypocrisy of Bell BCE's avowed commitment to the community- and their annual PR campaign. "Don't be fooled if this company Bell says “yes we have 1000 Manitoba employees. Ask them this, are then directly employed by Bell or are contractors? I bet they avoid the question." "They wonder what causes mental issues? It's bullshit like this and I find it so ironic that they have this Bell Let's Talk Day. So Bell, let's talk about the bullshit you clowns are doing that is causing mental issues. " The Union local is Unifor Local 7 (https://uniforlocal7.ca/) and has a General Membership meeting set for March 27. TGCTS will continue to report on the situation. 30:42 Part 3- Marty Gold explains that tips like these come to ActionLine.ca and not corporate media for a reason- we can be trusted to stand up for the truth and to get information you need on the record. While the Prime Minister attacks social media platforms that hold him and his subsidized media accountable, we continue to represent the community. With Bell Media bean counters axing almost 5000 jobs nationally and dumping weekend and noontime newscasts in Winnipeg, the public is again being abandoned by corporate newsrooms. Episode 14 starts with a look at the impact on the ability of their newsroom to properly report the news, and our efforts to ensure vital information and investigations continue to be made available to residents and stakeholders. The hypocrisy of issuing life-shattering layoffs immediately after the "Bell Let's Talk" charade of caring about mental health is now frequently noted as the brand burns itself to the ground. News Tips/Comments/Sponsorships/Interac donations: martygoldlive@gmail.com 13:51 Part 2- An example of the kind of news CTV Winnipeg might have telecast this weekend is the budget battle brewing in St. Boniface. City belt-tightening proposals to close area outdoor pools is meeting fierce opposition in Windsor Park/Winakwa and around Happyland Park. We air out the well-founded grievances of the residents who point out the City itself fails to follow policy and to staff the pools properly. This also impacts area families outside of those neighborhoods- as when the mismanaged Norwood Pool was demolished a few years ago, they were told to attend the other facilities, now also slated for demolition with no replacements planned. 23.00- Councilor Matt Allard has asserted he will fight the cuts and try to save the amenities. "Splash Pad were meant to replace wading pools, not pools. And two pools in exchange for one splash pad is not fair to the residents of St. Boniface," You'll hear his Facebook post, where he cites the meth crisis and rising crime as reasons to preserve recreation in the working class neighborhoods in his ward. "After I had time to cool off I looked at the budget and talked to a few colleagues, I realised that there is a good argument to change the budget and save the pools. "I am doing everything I can, talking to colleagues and city administration to reverse this decision." He says he'll lobby for other councilors to vote with him. Will it be too little, too late? Here's a CBC Radio interview about the battle. 35:53 Part 3- Another story people won't see on CTV WInnipeg this weekend but that we wlll tell you about, is a pro-Hamas rally planned for Sunday. Organizers say it will use tactics to get public attention that have been banned in Toronto- by occupying a traffic overpass. It's another in a long line of antisemitic antics that Winnipeg leaders fail to denounce or prevent. Listen to the details as we close the episode. Our investigations and analysis is funded entirely by YOU- our sponsors, advertisers and donors. We need your support today to cover production costs and expand our schedule! Welcome back. Sad day for 4800 employees at Bell Media: Bell announced they were firing 4800 people today. They are also selling half of their radio stations to suckers who want them and blamed the government for years of stripping profits and assets from their media division. - Why? Is it systemic, or is Bell a shitty company (both)? - Bell's CEO emailed staff, and we read it on the show. It's hilarious. He blames everyone but himself for trying to cut their way to better profitability! - Why publicly traded companies should never be allowed to deliver news to anyone - Is radio dead, or is Bell just really bad at it? - The human cost and what you must remember today if you're one of the 4800. It's not you; it's them and the industry...

The Pals X Garrett Neiles Episode 247 - Presented By Hardbite Chips. Canadian based and every chip is made with no preservatives, no GMOs, no trans fat, no gluten, no cholesterol! Garrett Neiles is realizing the depth that comes with maturity and the satisfaction that comes with a growing sense of self. The Japanese-Canadian pop-rock artist from Winnipeg, Manitoba picked up the guitar as a way to connect and has been working on that dream ever since. Injuring his wrist while attending the University of Victoria on a golf scholarship, he passed time in post-op healing physically and emotionally, contemplating who he is, his place in the world, what he truly values and what a healthy and happy life looks like. Recognizing his passion for performance and strong singing voice, Neiles married the latter to his guitar, developed a rock-and-roll rasp, and took cues from some of his favourite legacy artists like Rob Thomas' (Matchbox 20) songwriting and Steven Tyler's (Aerosmith) vocals. Neiles' songwriting reflects a man dedicated to growth, who's learning life's complex corners and new, healthier ways to connect with himself and the world. Edgy and clean-cut, Neiles' nostalgic 2000's-era brand of pop-rock boasts big hooks and a bold take on a widely appealing sound. Neiles also works with True North Youth Foundation's Project 11, a global educational mental health subdivision where he's performed at their Bell Let's Talk day, as well as sang the national anthem at Winnipeg Jets games. That idea of "putting on a mask" to hide your pain is something so many of us are familiar with, but when your job requires you to stand in front of a camera and perform at your best day in and day out, that term takes on a whole new meaning. I'm really excited to share this conversation with all of you today. Today's guest, CTV's Ana Almeida, and I met on a Movember walk back in 2021, and after hearing about her experiences as a person living with Anxiety and how she's used her platform to diminish the stigma that still surrounds mental illness, I knew it was only a matter of time until we got an episode out together. Well, two years later, the time is NOW! During our chat, Ana talks about her relationship with herself and reflected on the impact that Anxiety and her mental health have had on her relationships with friends, family and partners. We talked about how she shared openly about her mental health struggles live on air during Bell Let's Talk Day in 2017 and the amazing impact she saw from the communities she serves after she did so. During a part of the show that will always stand out as being a particularly special moment to have shared, Ana, who immigrated as a youth, talks about her close relationship with her father and how she navigated learning about his cancer diagnosis during a very difficult time in her life. This episode is funny, authentic, and vulnerable; it's everything you'd want from an episode of Life's a Wreck.Check out our ➡️Patreon⬅️Follow Ana:@ana_almedia - IG@anaalmeidaCTV - Twitter Follow the podcast:@lifesawreckpodcast - IG Follow Kyle:@moorzyyy - IGSupport the show
Ryan Getzlaf had chuckle at Ray's (literal) expense as Mr. Ferraro was late to the interview thanks to a traffic ticket. Getzlaf recounted his recent experience being pulled over, in a great conversation with the guys. He spoke on enjoying retired life, and being a stay-at-home dad. But, he discussed missing the game, and future plans for a role in management, coaching, or even joining Ray & Dregs in media! The former Anaheim Ducks superstar spent his entire career with the Ducks, but he filled us in on a trade that ALMOST sent him down the road to play for a contender. He applauded former teammate Corey Perry for still being as ‘agitating' as ever, and credited Teemu Selanne for a passion for cars that the two Ducks legends share. Headlines covers the CHL's Top Prospects game and the chance for the game's next crop to showcase their talent for NHL scouts. Trade winds are picking up with the All-Star break around the corner; the guys discuss Jakob Chychrun to LA rumours, the Kings goaltending issues, and Joonas Korpisalo as a possible solution. Plus, Mitch Marner's Bell Let's Talk message, and the importance of prioritizing mental health. Kris Abbott raises the stakes with picks for both the NFC and AFC Championship games this weekend. Kris likes KC's odds and tells us why they might finally have the answer to Burrow and the Bengals. Meanwhile, Ray's hoping more teasers will keep him in 1st place in the pod's NFL picks competition. Ray's trading out the rain boots for a pair of shades as he'll be heading south for a golf trip! Brooke Henderson's appearance on Overdrive, and the golf-game of TSN buddies are broken down in the final segment. She's also worked with Medcan CEO and True Patriot Love chair Shaun Francis on a million-dollar fund to support military members, Veterans and their families. Many of us "think" we're open to talking about mental health. But the truth is, it can be hard to admit you're struggling, and it can be challenging to know where to turn. Quinn Jesso is mental health promotion coordinator with the Community Mental Health Initiative. She has organized a mental health symposium for Wednesday, Jan. 25 in Corner Brook. That is Bell Let's Talk Day, but Jesso believes we should talk about mental health all year long.
In recent years, Canadian companies have been pouring money into Mexico. If you're looking to save some money on groceries (and who isn't), some startups are hoping you'll drop coupon clipping in favour of scouring apps to score bags of half-off produce. The days of tweeting #BellLetsTalk (and giving yourself a little pat on the back for it) have come to an end as the telecom giant revamps its famous mental health campaign. Celebrating something? Michael Landsberg is one of the best-known personalities in Canadian broadcasting, commonly known for hosting the the show "Off The Record". Landsberg has been with TSN since the network's inception from its debut in 1997, to its finale in 2015. In his documentary Darkness and Hope: Depression, Sports, and Me, Landsberg shared his own struggles with depression and interviewed other famous individuals about their own battles. Landsberg is an ambassador for Bell Let's Talk, an initiative raising awareness about mental health, and he is the founder of #SickNotWeak, a charity that reframes mental illness as a health issue, rather than a character flaw. In this episode of the Own it podcast, Landsberg defines mental illness and discusses some of his personal battles with depression, including some of his hardest days. He shares his advice for those struggling on how to help themselves, as well as how a friend or family member can support someone struggling with a mental illness. He shares stories from his career and personal life and gives advice on how to live a fulfilling life despite living with a mental illness.
On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with endurance athlete and suicide prevention advocate, Lynn Keane. She loved running in school and was competitive on the track before taking a long hiatus from the sport, coming back at age 39. Running and triathlon remain a huge part of her life. It helped her to grieve over the tragic loss of her child, and allowed Lynn to find a path forward showing tremendous perseverance and resilience.
