In the life of an athlete, there's only so much you can control. Training plans and performance tracking will get you to the start line, but once the klaxon sounds, you're in the hands of the gods. How do you prepare for the feeling of letting go? And how do you trust that everything will go your way, when it's no longer up to you? In conjunction with Rapha we produced a short film and photo essay which you can view HERE: https://bit.ly/FaithLP

From Taylor: another summer mixtape for y'all. It's been cooking in the studio in Spain as we don't have AC - I'm always working with pushing the limits of transition between genres. This is a compilation of older music I love from the likes of David August, Marvin Gaye, and BADBADNOTGOOD, among other jazz, RnB, and electronic discoveries. The mix also features a deep dive into a label I've been digging these days named Geigling, hailing from the machine music motherland, Deutschland. Hier kommt die Sonne. We hope this helps you find your groove...
We are back! After a busy summer schedule Ramble (and all the thereabouts podcasts) is back and there is a lot to catch up on! In episode six of Ramble Lachy catches Gus up on his summer exploits which include a jaunt in east Africa, the Crusher in the Tusher, and prep for the remainder of the gravel season.
In episode 5 of Ramble Gus touches base with Lachy, who's back in Colombia after several big season objectives. They talk about their recent trip with World Bicycle Relief, La Ruta - the worlds toughest MTB race - and of course Unbound Gravel. They also shit-can Golf, for some reason. We hope you enjoy this rambling space filler of a conversation.

Imagine being whisked away from your childhood home in the dead of night never to return again. Instead you find yourself sailing on the open ocean for days, before seeking refuge on a tropical Island you'd come to call home for several years. For a young Quoc and his family this was the beginning of their journey to the UK, and the start of a new life outside the communist regime of Vietnam. In this week's episode of Outspoken we go inside the unexpected life of Quoc Pham, and his eponymous cycling footwear brand Quoc for what is a story about finding one's identity, dogged perseverance, and evolution. Gus and Isaac return in I AM HERE: Behind the Film 002 to give you the low down on how the scope of the project transformed from three five-minute shorts set in Iceland to a scripted, feature film straddling that frozen tundra and also bustling Mexico City. At the heart of this story is Gus's relationship with alcohol. Gus opens up about how he started drinking to fill a sinking void upon retiring (the first time) from professional cycling. The conversation turns quite philosophical as Gus, Isaac, and Abby chew on the existential questions plaguing human existence. Along the way, they share the real story behind the script of I AM HERE. Welcome to I AM HERE: Behind the Film, a mini-series that goes behind the scenes on our upcoming feature film, I AM HERE. In this first episode, thereabouts founder Angus Morton and executive producer Isaac Karen hash out the entirely unrecognizable initial vision for this project and the logistical quagmire of getting to and biking across Iceland during the dead of winter, in the middle of a pandemic. What could possibly go wrong? Watch the I AM HERE trailer on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/3PYkuY3. Here's SCAPES 002, the second installment in Taylor Phinney's mix series. A note on this mix from Taylor: “The goal it seems, at least from my limited and beginner perspective, is to lose touch with that impulse in this maze of windows—to feel and act with total awareness and presence—almost ‘coming to' on the other side of time.” If you enjoy what you hear, please throw us a review. For the last three months, we've watched from afar as bombs crater buildings, tanks trample fields, and families flee from their homes in Ukraine. And once again we've been confronted with the question: why does sport matter when people are literally fighting for their lives? Valentyna Veretska has an answer. The Ukrainian marathoner fled the country with her 11 year-old daughter upon hearing explosions on the morning of February 22. She won the Jerusalem Marathon just a month later. Her story behind that one line on a race result reveals that sport can play a role in our lives that maybe we don't even fully understand. We'll let Valentyna explain. And if you feel moved, please donate to the World Central Kitchen in her name. We'll be giving her medal from the race to a donor via our Discord. Outspoken is a thereabouts production. We spend a lot of time discussing the concept of sport, the athlete and the role they play in wider society. As we have been writing and editing the next episode of Outspoken we have been confronted with this question in light of a major war. Of course that changes things dramatically right? Or does it? As we've been debating this we keep coming back to something a guest said on a previous episode of the show. So today we wanted to dive back into the archive with alpinist, Adrien Costa. As I said we have a brand new episode of Outspoken coming next week as well as more Ramble and Scapes in the works. What is an athlete? It's a simple question with a myriad of complicated answers. Or is it? Adrien Costa had the cycling world at his feet, amassing an incredible resume before the age of twenty when seemingly out of the blue he decided to leave the sport entirely. Finding himself in the mountains once again but this time closer to their summit Adrien was again pushing himself in pursuit of his limits, that is until the universe pushed back. Adrien lost his leg in a climbing incident. But rather than let his injury define him, he's channelled that brush with death to find clarity on what it is to be an athlete and a human being. Season 3 of Outspoken kickoffs with Taylor Phinney, longtime Thereabouts friend and first time Thereabouts Audio Wizard in Chief. Taylor has publicly discussed his retirement from professional cycling, but we remained a bit miffed how the American superstar, the media darling who ushered US cycling into the digital era, could walk away at age 29 and the prime of his career. Chatting with Outspoken from Girona Spain, the typically enigmatic Taylor gives raw insight into the confining nature of professional cycling. He unearths his initial motivation for pursuing sport at the highest level – and confronts how reality clashed with that fantasy. “You realize that actually, you're not like Harry Potter. You're not the hero of the story because you have to shut up.” –Taylor Phinney For Taylor, sport is like an hourglass: the grains of energy invested simply slip down into energy dissipated. You invest all of your strength, all of your time, all of your soul, and yet you get nothing in return. Taylor explains how athletic's fleetingness gave way to craving permanence through art. The reasons for Taylor's meteoric rise and abrupt exit from professional cycling raise questions about what it means to be a great athlete, what it takes to remain one, and what weight we should bestow those qualities. The same properties that instill Taylor with introspection and artistry, that innate ability to transcend his own perspective and consider his life in relation to the universe around him, may be exactly why he walked away from sport with theoretically much more to give. To what degree is consciousness incompatible with competition? Reflecting on his quest to live a meaningful life, Taylor feels compelled to give back to the sport that raised him. And in doing so, he shares how he rediscovered a pure love for exploring on two wheels. If you want to listen to this episode, as well as all past and future episodes of Outspoken, tune in wherever you listen to podcasts. And stay tuned for Scapes, a sonic tour inside Taylor's mind. What we meant to say... G'day sports fans, If you've missed us or wondered if we'd fallen off the face of the planet, we apologize we've been busy making films, but surprise our podcast is back. Gus and I have A quick word for you before we kick off season three of Outspoken. The first episode of the new season, with Taylor Phinney, represents a homecoming of sorts. I want to say that Taylor's story is in a way inextricably linked to mine, and that of thereabouts. His story feels personal, like meeting an estranged family member for the first time after twenty five years of living. As friends we've both been trying to figure out our place - reconcile our love for the sport that has shaped us, with our lived experience within it. It's taken years but finally it seems as though our paths are converging. The new season of Outspoken with returning host Abby Levene, kicks off a family of new shows we are producing. One of which is with the better half side of the Morton family tree, Lachlan, and the other is with Taylor Phinney. After years of figuring out our place in this world, we realize it's time that we just carve out our own. So we are, and we want to invite you in. Along with the new shows In the coming days we are launching a new discord, and webpage which we encourage you all to check out and join. We're also carving out a growing space for content, merch, and opportunities to bring the community together. Thereabouts exists because of you, and we have settled on a sustainable model that allows us to create more, more frequently and at the highest quality. So we have come up with a way for our members to directly support the content and each other as we grow this thing, together. We are starting small, but it's just the beginning. We would love it if you join us for the ride and help us to shape the future of Thereabouts We believe that Sport can provide a world of new perspective, and I don't mean that in a grandiose hand clappy, enlightened one kind of way. I mean that sport does change all of us, regardless of our mode of engagement, in subtle, personal ways. Ways that help us understand the world. Those are the experiences we want to share with you, because we feel that is important. So with that, welcome to Outspoken season 3
A new episode of Outspoken continues our deepdive into the issue of trans rights in sport.Rugby prides itself on a motto of “rugby for all.” Yet on October 9, 2020, World Rugby banned trans women from the highest level of the sport — becoming the first international governing body to do. The “science” used to justify this ban is a sham. We get into that. But frankly, scientific arguments around this issue in rugby, running and sport at large misses the actual point. What those arguing against inclusion seem to forget is that they are toying with real people's lives, including the life of the brilliant, kind, and delightful Grace McKenzie. Sport has played an integral role lifting Grace up throughout her life, and ultimately affirming her as a human. World Rugby striped that sanctuary away. Yet Grace rose to the challenge to fight for this foundational human right If you want to listen, you can find the episode wherever you listen to podcasts. S2 E02 - In this episode of Outspoken shares the story of Grace Fisher, 100 mile trail running champion, mother, and Operations Research Analyst for the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security. Grace rediscovered running while testing equipment for the Army, blowing off steam with late night runs around the base. Running served as a sort of saving grace in her life, helping her heal from addiction and divorce. Yet even more so, Grace serves as a saving grace for sport itself. When asked about her own running, Grace lauds the grit and kindness of her competitors. And as the first openly transgender ultrarunner to podium at major races, she's inadvertently helping to build a more inclusive and supportive running world (and beyond). S2 EP01 - This story begins as all great stories do in the age of social media, with a stranger sliding into your DM's. Back In early 2019 I received a message on instagram. The account was private and had no profile picture. The message said they'd heard I had started climbing and that if I needed a climbing instructor, they'd be willing to help. The only other information they gave, was that they'd been for a ride a while back with my brother Lachlan. A little curious, I responded and so began getting to know the unique story of Tyler Landman. In sport we often find allegories for life, stories of overcoming, of perseverance of dedication but rarely do we find a literal representation of life's complexities in the sports in which we participate and spectate. In this episode of Outspoken, we take a look at how one man's approach to climbing has lead his search for answers to the problems we all face at one point or another, that of finding balance, perspective and commitment. S1 E11 - The protagonist for today's story, is an unlikely one. Cut from the same cloth as convicts, and cast from the salty shores of Australia to the land of opportunity, It has all the hallmarks of a classic underdog novel. A plumber by trade and avid BMX'r it wasn't until a hacked bank account whilst on a surf trip in Mexico that Matt even rode a big bike for the first time. And even then on that long ride from Mexico City to Austin Texas CRUST was still but a twinkle in Matt's eye. Enter an Ipod touch, yes an Ipod touch, Cheech and the rest is history. Knowing basically none of this, we sat down with Cheech and Matt who until very recently were literally the duo behind the burgeoning bike brand Crust that does things its own way, to hell with everybody else, to dig a little deeper into the story of a couple of folks just tryin' to make a crust. In episode 11 of Thereabouts: Outspoken we catch up with founder of CRUST bikes Matt, and his business partner and wife Cheech to find out how the brand came to be, bringing surfboard design to cycling, bike orgasms, running a small business, and the joys of touring. S1 EP10 - The idea behind the AMANI project is simple - they try to create cycling opportunities for talented rides from East Africa. At least, that was the plan, till COVID-19. The travel restrictions have forced them to reconsider their model and search for ways to achieve their goals of greater inclusivity in the sport in an environment where no races are taking place and international travel is restricted. That's when they decided to take a closer look at the e-racing. Why e-racing? Following many conversations with partners and a few trial runs, they came to see e-racing as a potential game-changer, a leveller, an opportunity for much greater inclusivity. How? Namely, through e-racing they can showcase the talent of many of our riders to the world without incurring the costs associated with travel and stay in Europe. Less costs means more opportunities for up and coming riders. In addition, they see it as a brilliant development tool for talent scouting with hard data and standardised testing methods now suddenly accessible at the village level. That brings us to the The #RideOnline Campaign. The Objective: to get as many African cycling clubs and teams racing together online as soon as possible. The Plan: First, together with their partner Team Africa Rising, they are going to start by outfitting our three sister team clubhouses in Iten (Kenya), Kigali (Rwanda) and Masaka (Uganda) with e-trainers so as to extend e-racing and e-training opportunities to all riders on those respective teams. Second, using their Team Amani X Africa Rising Intercontinental Series event on Zwift, they hope to link all of these riders together on a single platform so as to provide a venue for networking amongst the riders and a space to demonstrate their collective strength. Third, members from Team Amani (Europe) will support the best riders from each of the sister teams under the umbrella of a single (e)Team Amani and try and win as many races as possible to showcase the individual talents of those riders in the network. We sat down with Mikel Delagrange who is one of the creators to discuss all of the above and much much more Link to the Zwift event: https://www.zwift.com/events/view/868182?__znl=en-eu Team Amani: www.teamamani.com @teamamani on Insta The Migration (Gravel event): @ride_migration on Insta (website coming soon) Lola Bikes and Coffee (team clubhouse, etc.) www.lolabikesandcoffee.nl @lolabikesandcoffee on Insta Links to Sister Clubs/Teams Rwanda: Team Africa Rising @africarisingcycling https://teamafricarising.org/ Kenya: Kenya Riders @kenya_riders https://kenyanriderssafaricom.com/ Uganda: Masaka Cycling Club @masakacyclingclub https://thehiddenathlete.com.au/masaka-cycling-club/
S1 EP09 - Sometime Thereafter is released by ROAM Media. To watch the film for free head over to: https://roammedia.com/sometime-thereafter/ 'How do we remember an experience? What do we glean from a journey? Personal growth is at the heart of adventure, but the lessons we learn and the memories we make differ between each individual. Sometime Thereafter is a phone conversation about a journey into the Canadian wilderness, the way we process experience and remember our past. Thereabouts has been interested in exploring the various ways sport, and adventure impact those who participate in them. In September 2018 myself and three friends embarked on a self supported journey through Canada with the purpose of getting to know the people of the place we were travelling through and learning what we could from them about living. The trip was an extension of the ride that became Outskirts: The Big Land and was a trip that has had a lasting impact on myself for innumerable reasons, not the least of which the shared experience with my three counterparts. As anyone who has done any sort of self-powered journey with friends will attest, what the experience is for each individual is vastly different. We all confront our own demons, we all have our own motivations, and we all have our strengths and weaknesses. With that in mind we sat on the footage for over a year before calling up those still willing to hear what the trip was to them, and how their lives had been impacted so many months later. Let me tell you, a lot can happen in a year. In the first installment of the Sometime Thereafter podcast special, I interview Nico via phone to hear about the power of journey sometime thereafter. S1 EP08 - Today's show touches a lot of different topics but at its heart is a journey of healing. Today we talk about Christina Birch and Ashton Lambies' idiosyncratic rise to the top of USA cycling, as well as the off script way they handled their career goals being derailed by COVID - 19. At the heart of our conversation is a message to the power of finding your own place when it seems there isn't on for you, and never relinquishing who you are, and what you stand for. In a year that has seen the world suffer a health crisis and a month where the world has taken to the streets in a demand for racial equality we have been trying to figure out where sport can fits into the picture as a positive catalyst for progress and change. We recently spoke with basketball legend Reggie Miller about the role of sport in a time like this and his comment was that sport has the power to heal, and to provide a platform of example. We have seen major changes in the NFL and the NASCAR over the last week and so we got to thinking about how sport can bring about healing, and change in subtle and personal ways. And that brings us to the stories of Chris and Ashton as told, by Ashton and Chris. Christina and Ashton would like to especially thank Kuat Racks for supporting their escape adventure. Martin is outfitted with the NV 2.0 rack with 2-bike add-on and the Pivot V2 arm; Christina continued her COVID escape to Arizona and Montana with the Sherpa 2.0 rack. Kuat Racks keeps us ready for adventure at the drop of a hat... or rather, at the drop of an N95 mask. S1 EP07 - Why any kid decides to set out and dedicate themselves to a life of pain and suffering in pursuit of perfection in their sport is fascinating. A pure and naive dedication that seldom results in the life they thought it would. Today's guest, a kid from Nebraska who set out to run his first marathon at 12, started off with the same single minded pursuit, and when one looks back at his life some twenty plus years later you'd be hard pressed to call that twelve year old naive. Today we sit down with Anton, Tony, Krupicka, a true sports man who, by my account has stayed true to that twelve year old kid who ran a marathon for no real reason. Tony has always marched to his own beat, it seems. A trues multi sportsman Tony started running as a young kid and never stopped, staying true to just that, running, and running the way he wanted. He went on to graduate with multiple degrees on his way to making his name by winning some of the most prestigious ultra marathons in the world. We sat down with Tony to talk about running that marathon at 12, chasing 100mile weeks through school and 200mile weeks after it, to finally making a living as an athlete and winning the fabled Leadville 100. Not once but twice. To us he's the MJ of ultra racing. The Goat. What we didn't expect was Tony's response to that inevitable career crossroads, the power of arbitrary measures in finding meaning through adventure and the concept of loss. Follow Anton at: @antonkrupicka
S1 EP06 - I first met Sarah a little over a year back after I had been commissioned to make a film about her event the Ruta Del Jefe. Named after the famous jaguar that inhabited the area the event takes place in, namely the Sky Islands of the southern Arizona borderlands. It is one of the most biodiverse regions in the USA, and it is facing numerous environmental and humanitarian issues, from the threat of mineral extraction to the unnecessary deaths of migrants crossing the border. The goal of the event is to raise awareness for the region, and in the lead up to the inaugural event I spent several days interviewing a series of experts from a range of different organisations, each working to protect an element in the region. With a route that can only be described as breathtaking the event highlighted for me the ability of sport to showcase a region under threat, as well as bring together all of those with an interest in protecting the area under one roof to further educate and inform the racing participants. It was that event that really helped focused the mission of thereabouts as that of using sport to help people understand the world. This is only one bow in the plethora of Sarah Swallow and so we sat down with her to better understand how she came to view the bike in the way that she does and how she plans to use it to keep fighting for the issues she cares about. S1 EP05 - This week's guest is an old friend and a dear friend. Someone I very much looked up to as a junior and someone I was fortunate enough to race alongside in my first season in the professional ranks. S1 EP1 - In these strange times we thought to it would be nice to hear some positive stories and so we decided to start a podcast where we look to do just that, share interesting, inspiring and uplifting stories from people who are thinking about sport differently. 2019 was a year of changing course for thereabouts that culminated in a new approach and mission for everything we do. In our inaugural episode we thought it would be best to start at the place where that new mission was born, at Common. Today's show is a round table we had with Mark Eckhardt CEO of Common and the man who helped us distill the mission and vision of thereabouts. We chat about Mark's past, the process of finding your mission, as well as the role of sport and community in society. You can reach Mark's organization here: www.COMMON.is Watch our films, read our stories and much more over at www.thereabouts.co Music is from Outskirts written and produced by Builders Tea.
